Abstract:Recently, the high need for artificial intelligence, human motion monitoring, and wearable devices that can be utilized to track human health conditions, particularly for patients experiencing any sickness, has drawn serious interest from researchers. The flexible pressure sensors are a promising possibility for these human–machine interface applications because of their quick reaction, huge sensitivity, and ultra-low detection limit. These flexible sensing devices provide real-time statistics about the conditions of the human body, like blood pressure and heartbeat estimation, to recognize cardiovascular-related diseases. We have developed a versatile and wearable capacitive sensing device by changing the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dielectric layer's structure using a scrubber layer which introduced the porosity in the dielectric layer. The developed sensor showed excellent response under static pressure and dynamic pressure applications. Due to large sensitivity, high working stability, and speedy reaction (120 ms), the versatility of the pressure sensor has been demonstrated in various human motion monitoring applications like wrist bending, palm grip, elbow bending, knee twisting, and vocal-cord vibration detection. In addition, the developed sensor was also used in human–machine interface applications to perceive heartbeat and wrist-pulse motion under typical and after-exercise conditions.

Abstract:Flexible sensors have been extensively employed in wearable technologies for physiological monitoring given the technological advancement in recent years. Conventional sensors made of silicon or glass substrates may be limited by their rigid structures, bulkiness, and incapability for continuous monitoring of vital signs, such as blood pressure (BP). Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have received considerable attention in the fabrication of flexible sensors due to their large surface-area-to-volume ratio, high electrical conductivity, cost effectiveness, flexibility, and light weight. This review discusses the transduction mechanisms, namely, piezoelectric, capacitive, piezoresistive, and triboelectric, of flexible sensors. Several 2D nanomaterials used as sensing elements for flexible BP sensors are reviewed in terms of their mechanisms, materials, and sensing performance. Previous works on wearable BP sensors are presented, including epidermal patches, electronic tattoos, and commercialized BP patches. Finally, the challenges and future outlook of this emerging technology are addressed for non-invasive and continuous BP monitoring.

Abstract:Pulse wave carries comprehensive information regarding the human cardiovascular system (CS), which is essential for directly capturing CS parameters. More importantly, cuffless blood pressure (BP) is one of the most critical markers in CS. Accurately measuring BP via the pulse wave for continuous and noninvasive diagnosis of a disease associated with hypertension remains a challenge and highly desirable. Here, a flexible weaving constructed self‐powered pressure sensor (WCSPS) is reported for measurement of the pulse wave and BP in a noninvasive manner. The WCSPS holds an ultrasensitivity of 45.7 mV Pa−1 with an ultrafast response time of less than 5 ms, and no performance degradation is observed after up to 40 000 motion cycles. Furthermore, a low power consumption sensor system is developed for precisely monitoring pulse wave from the fingertip, wrist, ear, and ankles. A practical measurement is performed with 100 people with ages spanning from 24 to 82 years and different health statuses. The discrepancy between the measured BP results using the WCSPS and that provided by the commercial cuff‐based device is about 0.87–3.65%. This work demonstrates an efficient and cost‐effective way for human health monitoring, which would be a competitive alternative to current complex cardiovascular monitoring systems. A flexible and wearable weaving constructed self‐powered pressure sensor is demonstrated for human health monitoring, which can measure and record the human pulse wave and cuffless blood pressure in a noninvasive manner. Based on the acquired pulse wave data, a user‐friendly and low power consumption sensor system is developed for continuous human health assessment with no restrictions on time and place.

Abstract:A highly sensitive (S = 108.52 kPa−1 for 0–5 kPa range) soft capacitive sensor worn like a Band‐Aid is developed such that continuous blood pressure monitoring is sustainably achieved after an initial, single point calibration obtained from the arm‐cuff. The sensor leverages iontronic material with air‐gaps for the dielectric combined with highly wrinkled, stretchable electrodes. Continuous beat‐to‐beat blood pressure (BP) monitoring provides hemodynamic information such as BP changes and waveforms over time, providing abundant information to more accurately diagnose a person's cardiovascular health compared to static cuff‐based measurements. To overcome the shortcomings of current techniques, a highly sensitive (S = 108.52 kPa−1 for 0–5 kPa range) soft capacitive sensor that can be worn like a Band‐Aid is developed such that continuous beat‐to‐beat BP monitoring can be sustainably achieved after an initial calibration. The sensor leverages iontronic material with air gaps for the dielectric combined with highly wrinkled, stretchable electrodes; the resulting average sensitivity of this device is demonstrated to be higher than that of other comparable sensors in literature. For the hemodynamic capture, the operating frequency of 300 kHz is chosen to achieve higher temporal resolution in continuous BP monitoring. Further, the multi‐island design in this work allows for rapid placement of the sensor without needing to accurately align with the underlying artery. Because of the improved sensitivity, the sensors can be adhered to the pulse points without an applanator. Finally, this sensor demonstrates sustained beat‐to‐beat blood pressure recordings that show excellent systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure correlation with an FDA‐cleared device, the Caretaker.

Abstract:Wearable pressure sensors enable long-term real-time health monitoring in a noninvasive and power-efficient way; however, the sensors are often required to be precisely applied at the optimal measurement spot, e.g., nearby radial artery, for signal acquisition, causing inconvenience for untrained users or the elders. In this paper, a wearable liquid-capsule sensor platform embedded with a piezo-resistive pressure sensor is presented for continuous, accurate, and alignment-relaxed physiological monitoring, i.e., heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) tracking. The flexible capsule design ensures comfort and good device conformation to any skin regions. For HR and BP measurements, experiments are performed on 12 human subjects. The results show that the capsuled sensor can continuously track: 1) HR with a mean absolute difference (MAD) of 0.88 beats per minute (bpm) and 2) BP with a MAD<3 mmHg for both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. The new liquid-capsule-based sensor platform may help to realize an accurate, flexible, robust, and low-power solution for next-generation wearable health monitoring devices.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors offer more significant advantages than rigid sensors in various applications, including human-computer interaction, medical health, and robot touch. However, this also places more stringent demands on the materials used. For example, the materials must be thin and soft enough to fit onto the surface of the human skin or be implanted into the body while also exhibiting good biocompatibility and matching the mechanical properties of biological tissues. Regarding device performance, flexible pressure sensor design primarily focuses on enhancing sensitivity, response time, detection limit, and stability. Researchers have recently been expanding these sensors' pressure response range, pressure resolution, spatial resolution, and tensile performance, which will further broaden their potential applications. This review provides an overview of the recent classification of flexible pressure sensors, covering their sensing principle, sensing performance, and future application prospects.

Abstract:Physiological pressure measurement is one of the most common applications of sensors in healthcare. Particularly, continuous pressure monitoring provides key information for early diagnosis, patient-specific treatment, and preventive healthcare. This paper presents a thin-film flexible wireless pressure sensor for continuous pressure measurement in a wide range of medical applications but mainly focused on interface pressure monitoring during compression therapy to treat venous insufficiency. The sensor is based on a pressure-dependent capacitor (C) and printed inductive coil (L) that form an inductor-capacitor (LC) resonant circuit. A matched reader coil provides an excellent coupling at the fundamental resonance frequency of the sensor. Considering varying requirements of venous ulceration, two versions of the sensor, with different sizes, were finalized after design parameter optimization and fabricated using a cost-effective and simple etching method. A test setup consisting of a glass pressure chamber and a vacuum pump was developed to test and characterize the response of the sensors. Both sensors were tested for a narrow range (0-100 mmHg) and a wide range (0-300 mmHg) to cover most of the physiological pressure measurement applications. Both sensors showed good linearity with high sensitivity in the lower pressure range <100 mmHg, providing a wireless monitoring platform for compression therapy in venous ulceration.

Abstract:In this work, we develop a flexible capacitive pressure sensor with simple structure, low cost, wide operating range, excel repeatability and high sensitivity. The sensor greatly reduces cost while maintaining performance by using a simple method of preparing the dielectric layer and inexpensive chemical materials. The sensor has a excel dynamic response (80ms) and recovery (55ms) and combines high sensitivity (0.3199kPa−1, < 10kPa) with a wide operating range (0.1-65 kPa). It is capable of stable operation for 1400 cycles. In addition, the capacitive pressure sensor has a large signal variation (4.1033nF/kPa), and the capacitance variation can be recognized and processed by a simple measurement circuit. Later experiments and the development of a wireless communication device have also demonstrated the great potential of this flexible capacitive pressure sensor for human detection and biomedical applications. Overall, this sensor is a promising low-cost wearable pressure sensor.

Abstract:Wearable blood‐pressure sensors have recently attracted attention as healthcare devices for continuous non‐invasive arterial pressure (CNAP) monitoring. However, the accuracy of wearable blood‐pressure (BP) monitoring devices has been controversial due to the low signal quality of sensors, the absence of an accurate transfer function to convert the sensor signals into BP values, and the lack of clinical validation regarding measurement precision. Here, a wearable piezoelectric blood‐pressure sensor (WPBPS) is reported, which achieves a high normalized sensitivity (0.062 kPa−1), and fast response time (23 ms) for CNAP monitoring. The transfer function of a linear regression model is designed, offering a simple solution to convert the flexible piezoelectric sensor signals into BP values. In order to verify the measurement accuracy of WPBPS, clinical trials are performed on 35 subjects aged from 20 to 80 s after screening. The mean difference between the WPBPS and a commercial sphygmomanometer of 175 BP data pairs is −0.89 ± 6.19 and −0.32 ± 5.28 mmHg for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respectively. By building a WPBPS‐embedded wristwatch, the potentially promising use of a convenient, portable, continuous BP monitoring system for cardiovascular disease diagnosis is demonstrated.

Abstract:Monitoring of arterial blood pressure via cuffless pulse waveform measurement at the wrist has an important clinical value for the early diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, accurate measurement of the radial pulse waveform is challenging owing to its subtle, wideband, and preload-dependent variation characteristics. Evidence shows that uncertainties or variations of wearing pressure and skin temperature can cause artifact signals in wrist pulse measurements, thus degrading blood pressure estimate accuracy and hindering precise clinical diagnosis. Herein, we report a flexible multisensory pulse sensor utilizing natural piezo-thermic transduction of human skin in conjunction with thin-film thermistors for the accurately measuring radial artery pulse waves with high fidelity and good anti-artifact performance. The flexible pulse sensor achieved a wide pressure measuring range (228.2 kPa), low detection limit (4 Pa), good linearity ( R 2 = 0.999), low hysteresis (2.45%), fast response (88 ms), and good durability and stability, thereby enabling accurate pulse measurement with high fidelity. The pulse sensor also monolithically integrated the simultaneous detections of skin temperature and wearing pressure for resisting artifact effects in pulse measurements. Through the fusion of multiple features extracted from the pulse waveform, wearing pressure, skin temperature and user's personal physical characteristics using an efficient multilayer perceptron, blood pressure is accurately estimated and good generalizability is achieved.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable pressure sensors attached to human skin are effective and convenient in accurate and real-time tracking of various physiological signals for disease diagnosis and health assessment. Conventional flexible pressure sensors are constructed using compressible dielectric or conductive layers, which are electrically sensitive to external mechanical stimulation. However, saturated deformation under large compression significantly restrains the detection range and sensitivity of such sensors. Here, we report a novel type of flexible pressure sensor to overcome the compression saturation of the sensing layer by soft-strain effect, enabling an ultra-high sensitivity of ~636 kPa −1 and a wide detection range from 0.1 kPa to 56 kPa. In addition, the cyclic loading-unloading test reveals the excellent stability of the sensor, which maintains its signal detection after 10,000 cycles of 10 kPa compression. The sensor is capable of monitoring arterial pulse waves from both deep tissue and distal parts, such as digital arteries and dorsal pedal arteries, which can be used for blood pressure estimation by pulse transit time at the same artery branch.

Abstract:Wrinkled gold thin films on elastomeric substrates are used as robust parallel plate electrodes for soft capacitive pressure sensors. The wrinkled structures create a robust integration with the polymer, allowing repeated normal force to deform the thin film without failure. By incorporating microridged structures that support the counter electrodes to create air cavities within the elastomeric dielectric layer, pressure sensitivity is further increased to 0.148 kPa−1 over a wide dynamic range of up to 10 kPa. The wide dynamic range and pressure sensitivity of the pressure sensor allow for consistent measurements of the pressure exerted by the radial artery located on the wrist. The soft capacitive pressure sensor displays comparable results when tested against an FDA approved device (Clearsight, Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) measuring beat‐to‐beat blood pressure. These soft pressure sensors using wrinkled thin films, therefore, illustrate considerable potential to continuously monitor beat‐to‐beat blood pressure.

Abstract:In recent years, research into the field of materials for flexible sensors and fabrication techniques directed towards wearable devices has helped to raise awareness of the need for new sensors with healthcare applicability. Our goal was to create a wearable flexible pressure sensor that could be integrated into a clinically approved blood pressure monitoring device. The sensor is built from a microfluidic channel encapsulated between two polymer layers, one layer being covered by metal transducers and the other being a flexible membrane containing the microfluidic channel, which also acts as a sealant for the structure. The applied external pressure deforms the channel, causing changes in resistance to the microfluidic layer. Electrical characterization has been performed in 5 different configurations, using alternating current (AC) and (DC) direct current measurements. The AC measurements for the fabricated pressure sensor resulted in impedance values at tens of hundreds of kOhm. Our sensor proved to have a high sensitivity for pressure values between 0 and 150 mm Hg, being subjected to repeatable external forces. The novelty presented in our work consists in the unique technological flow for the fabrication of the flexible wearable pressure sensor. The proposed miniaturized pressure sensor will ensure flexibility, low production cost and ease of use. It is made of very sensitive microfluidic elements and biocompatible materials and can be integrated into a wearable cuffless device for continuous blood pressure monitoring.

Abstract:Wearable sensors and devices capable of simulating human somatosensation are highly desirable to develop the next generation of electronic skins (e-skins), human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. Herein, the design of flexible and skin-compliant capacitive pressure sensors for monitoring human motion and physiological signals by electrical signal conversion is reported. The introduction of air chambers into elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate led to the development of pressure sensors with high sensitivity (0.82 kPa−1, up to 20% strain), capable of detecting both static and dynamic mechanical stimuli (17 nm/s), with a low Limit of Detection (LOD) of 1 Pa. Furthermore, the pressure sensors present an ultra-fast rise time (31.2 ms) and bandwidth (11.2 Hz), negligible hysteresis, and excellent cycling stability (> 10,000 cycles). Successful monitoring of human movement (e.g., arms bending), haptics, and physiological signals like heart and respiratory rates, demonstrate the potential of these sensors for wearable biosensing applications.

Abstract:Background & Objectives Measurement of blood pressure (BP) in ambulatory patients is crucial for at high-risk cardiovascular patients. A non-obtrusive, non-occluding device that continuously measures BP via photoplethysmography will enable long-term ambulatory assessment of BP. The aim of this study is to validate the metasense 2PPG cuffless wearable design for continuous BP estimation without ECG. Methods A customized high-speed electronic optical sensor architecture with laterally spaced reflectance pulse oximetry was designed into a simple unobtrusive low-power wearable in the form of a watch. 78 volunteers with a mean age of 32.72 ± 7.4 years (21 to 64), 51% male, 49% female were recruited with ECG-2PPG signals acquired. The fiducial features of the 2PPG morphologies were then attributed to the estimator. A 9-1 K-fold cross-validation was applied in the ML. Results The correlation for PTT-SBP was 0.971 and for PTT-DBP was 0.954. The mean absolute error was 3.167±1.636mmHg for SBP and 6.4± 3.9 mm Hg for DBP. The ambulatory estimate for SBP and DBP for an individual over 3 days with 8-hour recordings was 0.70-0.81 for SBP and 0.42-0.51 for DBP with a ±2.65 mmHg for SBP and ±2.02mmHg for DBP. For SBP, 98% of metasense measurements were within 15 mm Hg and for DBP, 91% of metasense measurements were within 10 mmHg. Conclusions The metasense device provides continuous, non-invasive BP estimations that are comparable to ambulatory BP meters. The portability and unobtrusiveness of this device, as well as the ability to continuously measure BP could one day enable long-term ambulatory BP measurement for precision cardiovascular therapeutic regimens.

Here, using conductive carbon black with good dispersibility and small particle size as the conductive filler filled in the middle of the sponge can improve the absorbability of the sponge. A simple method of soaking a sponge with different thicknesses in conductive carbon black dispersion is used to obtain flexible pressure sensors based on conductive carbon black/sponge. We compare and analyze the differences in initial resistance and sensitivity of sponge pressure sensors with different thicknesses and select the sensor with higher sensitivity (0.194 kPa−1) for response time, recovery time, and stability tests. The sensor is used in the neck, wrist, knee, and other body parts for motion recognition. The two conductive carbon black/sponge sensors are placed orthogonally on the back to identify nod, tilt head, and placed on the elbow to test the angle of arm bending. Conductive carbon black/sponge flexible pressure sensor shows good application prospects in the wearable field.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors (FPS) have shown wide applications in artificial robotics, wearable devices, electronic skins, and biomedical systems; however, complicated procedures like micromachining and micromolding are often involved to achieve high performance of the sensor. In this work, a novel capacitive FPS was prepared by using silver nanowire (AgNW)-paper substrates as electrodes and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as dielectrics, and results revealed that the sensitivity and dynamic range of the as-prepared sensor were 1.05kPa(-1) and 1Pa to 2kPa, respectively, which were comparable to the state-of-the-art ones; practical application measurements further indicated that the capacitive FPS was capable of detecting bending, finger tap, and human speech as well as identifying object profile; therefore, it shows good potential for applying in artificial skin and wearable devices.
A Durable Flexible Pressure Sensor with High Sensitivity and Wide Pressure Range for Health Monitoring

Abstract:This paper reports a flexible high-sensitivity pressure sensor with irregular spinous microstructures on the surface via utilizing commercial sandpaper as a template. Compared with the previous process of spraying or self-assembly of active materials on the surface of PDMS, the active material CNTs of this work is mixed into the surface of PDMS, making the sensor extremely durable and stable, even over 12000 pressure cycles at high pressure of 300 kPa. As a consequence, the obtained piezoresistive sensor exhibits high sensitivity (S5 = 145.706 kPa−1) and can be used to monitor weak signals such as pulse. Besides, it shows an ultra-wide pressure range (0.1~500 kPa), which can cover the overall pressure range in life. In addition, the sensor presents a very short response time «25 ms). For a proof of concept, we demonstrate the detection of pulse, gait and finger pressure signals.
