Abstract:Current developments in flexible sensors for epidermal pressure monitoring lack a fully integrated multimodal solution due to challenges such as crosstalk and complex integration processes. Here, a crosstalk-free multimodal sensor is presented by simple vertical lamination and spraying. Except for integrating the multimodal sensor, the device is equipped with a signal conditioning circuit, enhancing its portability. Importantly, each sensor is sensitive only to its specific stimulus but not to other stimuli, enabling signal decoupling without complex algorithms. The pressure sensor exhibits enhanced sensitivity (eight times greater than unstructured designs), and the temperature sensor shows a high sensitivity of 60.64 U / degrees C and a linearity of R2 2 = 0.9982 below 160 degrees C. degrees C. Meanwhile, the capacitance of the humidity sensor varies by 72 pF as humidity increases from 15% to 95%. The high integration and simple fabrication process provides a promising design concept for application in pressure ulcer prevention and telemedicine.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity and wide pressure response range are attracting considerable research interest for their potential applications as e-skins. Nowadays, it seems a dilemma to realize high-performance, multifunctional pressure sensors with cost-effective, scalable strategy, which can simplify wearable sensing systems without additional signal processing, enabling device miniaturization and low power consumption. Herein, pressure sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity and broad response pressure range are developed with a low-cost, facile method by combining strain-induced percolation behavior and contact area contributions. Due to their special surface structure and strain induced conductive network formation behavior, these unique pressure sensors exhibit wide sensing range of 1 Pa-500 kPa, ultra-high sensitivity (1×106 kPa-1and 3.1×104 kPa-1 in the pressure ranges of 1 Pa-20 kPa and 20-500 kPa, respectively), fast signal response (< 50 ms), low detect limit (1 Pa) and high stability over 500 loading/unloading cycles. These characteristics allow the devices work as e-skins to monitor human pulse signals and finger touch. Moreover, these sensors illustrate precise electrical response to mechanical vibration, bending and temperature stimuli, which afford the ability of detecting cell phone call-in vibration signals, joint bending and spatial pressure & temperature distributions, indicating promising applications in next-generation wearable, multifunctional e-skins.

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of physical motion, which can be successfully achieved via a wireless flexible wearable electronic device, is essential for people to ensure the appropriate level of exercise. Currently, most of the flexible LC pressure sensors have low sensitivity because of the high Young’s modulus of the dielectric properties (such as PDMS) and the inflexible polymer films (as the substrate of the sensors), which don’t have excellent stretchability to conform to arbitrarily curved and moving surfaces such as joints. In the LC sensing system, the metal rings, as the traditional readout device, are difficult to meet the needs of the portable readout device for the integrated and planar readout antenna. In order to improve the pressure sensitivity of the sensor, the Ecoflex microcolumn used as the dielectric of the capacitive pressure sensor was prepared by using a metal mold copying method. The Ecoflex elastomer substrates enhanced the levels of conformability, which offered improved capabilities to establish intimate contact with the curved and moving surfaces of the skin. The pressure was applied to the sensor by weights, and the resonance frequency curves of the sensor under different pressures were obtained by the readout device connected to the vector network analyzer. The experimental results show that resonant frequency decreases linearly with the increase of applied pressure in a range of 0–23,760 Pa with a high sensitivity of −2.2 MHz/KPa. We designed a coplanar waveguide-fed monopole antenna used to read the information of the LC sensor, which has the potential to be integrated with RF signal processing circuits as a portable readout device and a higher vertical readout distance (up to 4 cm) than the copper ring. The flexible LC pressure sensor can be attached to the skin conformally and is sensitive to limb bending and facial muscle movements. Therefore, it has the potential to be integrated as a body sensor network that can be used to monitor physical motion.

Abstract:This paper presents a relative pressure sensor fabricated by a standard industrial flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) technology. The passive wireless sensor consists of a variable sensing capacitor and a planar coil inductor. When the external pressure is applied to the sensing capacitor, it changes the air gap and shifts the LC resonance frequency which is detected by an antenna wirelessly. The sensing cavity of the variable capacitor is extended to the opening at the end of an embedded pressure channel in the FPCB strip to enable relative pressure measurement. Measurement results showed that the proposed sensor with such an open sensing cavity had much higher frequency sensitivity (up to 0.4 %/mmHg) compared with the sensor with a sealed cavity (< 0.01 %/mmHg in this work and ≤ 0.08 in literature). With the enhanced sensitivity, the measured pressure resolution could reach 0.2 mmHg. The potential application of the proposed sensor includes gauge pressure measurement with respect to local atmospheric pressure, such as intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, without complicated re-calibration procedures. The flat FPCB structure facilitates applications with limited space for sensor installation, such as in the subdural implantation procedures. Furthermore, the proposed technology enables future development of flexible microfluidic devices.

Abstract:This work presents the design, fabrication, and rigorous validation of a flexible, wireless, capacitive pressure sensor for the full-range continuous monitoring of ventricular pressure. The proposed system consists of an implantable set and an external readout device; both modules were designed to form an RCL resonant circuit for passive, wireless pressure sensing and signal retrieving. Using surface micromachining and flexible electronics techniques, a two-variable capacitor array and a dual-layer planar coil were integrated into a flexible ergonomic substrate, avoiding hybrid-like connections in the implantable set. The proposed arrangement (capacitor array and dual-layer coil) allows us to optimize the operation pressure range and sensing distance. The use of polyimide as both the flexible substrate and the passivation material is a key feature, ensuring a biocompatible, implantable set that is mechanically flexible and can be folded to a compact size to achieve minimally invasive implantation. An external readout device has also been developed using a discrete printed circuit board (PCB) approach to support pressure measurements. The pressure responsivity of the sensor was validated to the laboratory level using a controlled pressure chamber. The results obtained show that the capacitance value of the sensor changed from 5.68 pF to 33.26 pF as the pressure varied from 0 to 300 mmHg. Correspondingly, the resonance frequency of the implantable set shifted from 12.75 MHz to 5.27 MHz. The sensitivity of the capacitive sensor was approximately 0.58 pF/mmHg and the typical response time was 220 ms. The wireless system performance was evaluated in both air and synthetic biological tissue using a Maxwell–Wien bridge circuit. The results showed a sensing distance longer than 3.5 cm, even under moderate misalignment conditions (up to 1.5 cm). The output voltage was successfully measured, ranging from 502.54 mV to 538.29 mV, throughout the full pressure range, with a measurement error of ±2.2 mV.

Abstract:Passive wireless flexible sensors are attractive in the areas of wearable electronics, healthcare services, and smart robotics due to the advantages of simplified electrical connection, no requirement for power source, and long lifetime. In this article, a wireless passive flexible pressure sensor based on ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is proposed. The sensor consists of three layers, including a flexible RFID tag, an absorptive layer of ferrite film, and a compressive separation sponge in between. As an external load applies on the sensor, the sponge layer gets compressed, and the separation distance between the RFID tag and ferrite film reduces. As a result, the strength of the backscattering signal received by an RFID reader decreases due to the increment on the absorption effect from the ferrite film. Importantly, this is the first passive UHF pressure sensor adopting a tag-sponge-ferrite film structure, providing a compact solution to wireless pressure detection in the UHF band. Theoretical simulations have been conducted to analyze the influence of the thickness of the separation layer on the strength of the backscattering signal of the sensor, from which the optimal design of the passive pressure sensor has been defined. The sensor shows a high sensitivity of −9.49 dBm/kPa in the pressure range of 1.39–2.57 kPa, and environmental stabilities (within 0.91%) to temperature changes (25 °C–45 °C) and relative humidity (RH) variations (43%RH–82%RH). Importantly, the wireless transmission distance between the sensor and the reader is more than 70 cm, which is 16.67 times higher than a single LC-based wireless pressure sensor. This facilitates to broaden the potential usages of wireless passive pressure sensors in the fields of wearable electronics. To demonstrate the utility, the sensor has been integrated with a cuff and a cushion to wirelessly monitor bandage pressures and body movements.

Abstract:Ultrathin flexible pressure sensors are highly desirable for human physiological signal monitoring due to their portability and ability to conform to the body. However, existing ultrathin pressure sensors face challenges in balancing the sensitivity and their range. A spatial-dimensionally constrained strategy was proposed to construct an ultrathin active layer. In detail, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with an average length of ∼1.3 μm were intentionally spin-coated into a thin thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film with a thickness of 1.5 μm. By doing so, a quasi-2D MWCNTs conductive network is constructed, which enabled the sensor to have ultrahigh sensitivity of 27.04 kPa −1 , a wide liner detection range of 0.2–24 kPa, ultrafast response time of 40 ms and a recovery time of 10 ms, and high durability in 1500 cycles under 0.2 kPa with loading/unloading frequency of 2 Hz. Thanks to this superior performance, the ultrathin pressure sensor can be used to monitor human movement and physiological signals, including finger touch, finger bending, wrist bending, and deep breathing. Moreover, the sensor can be attached to the side wall of the tip of the renal ureteroscope, allowing for the monitoring of renal pelvic pressure. Therefore, this spatial-dimensionally constrained strategy will open up a new way to fabricate highly sensitive ultrathin pressure sensors and have great application prospects in health monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable pressure sensors attached to human skin are effective and convenient in accurate and real-time tracking of various physiological signals for disease diagnosis and health assessment. Conventional flexible pressure sensors are constructed using compressible dielectric or conductive layers, which are electrically sensitive to external mechanical stimulation. However, saturated deformation under large compression significantly restrains the detection range and sensitivity of such sensors. Here, we report a novel type of flexible pressure sensor to overcome the compression saturation of the sensing layer by soft-strain effect, enabling an ultra-high sensitivity of ~636 kPa −1 and a wide detection range from 0.1 kPa to 56 kPa. In addition, the cyclic loading-unloading test reveals the excellent stability of the sensor, which maintains its signal detection after 10,000 cycles of 10 kPa compression. The sensor is capable of monitoring arterial pulse waves from both deep tissue and distal parts, such as digital arteries and dorsal pedal arteries, which can be used for blood pressure estimation by pulse transit time at the same artery branch.

Abstract:In recent years, research into the field of materials for flexible sensors and fabrication techniques directed towards wearable devices has helped to raise awareness of the need for new sensors with healthcare applicability. Our goal was to create a wearable flexible pressure sensor that could be integrated into a clinically approved blood pressure monitoring device. The sensor is built from a microfluidic channel encapsulated between two polymer layers, one layer being covered by metal transducers and the other being a flexible membrane containing the microfluidic channel, which also acts as a sealant for the structure. The applied external pressure deforms the channel, causing changes in resistance to the microfluidic layer. Electrical characterization has been performed in 5 different configurations, using alternating current (AC) and (DC) direct current measurements. The AC measurements for the fabricated pressure sensor resulted in impedance values at tens of hundreds of kOhm. Our sensor proved to have a high sensitivity for pressure values between 0 and 150 mm Hg, being subjected to repeatable external forces. The novelty presented in our work consists in the unique technological flow for the fabrication of the flexible wearable pressure sensor. The proposed miniaturized pressure sensor will ensure flexibility, low production cost and ease of use. It is made of very sensitive microfluidic elements and biocompatible materials and can be integrated into a wearable cuffless device for continuous blood pressure monitoring.

Abstract:Recently, flexible capacitive pressure sensors have received significant attention in the field of wearable electronics. The high sensitivity over a wide linear range combined with long-term durability is a critical requirement for the fabrication of reliable pressure sensors for versatile applications. Herein, we propose a special approach to enhance the sensitivity and linearity range of a capacitive pressure sensor by fabricating a hybrid ionic nanofibrous membrane as a sensing layer composed of Ti3C2Tx MXene and an ionic salt of lithium sulfonamides in a poly(vinyl alcohol) elastomer matrix. The reversible ion pumping triggered by a hydrogen bond in the hybrid sensing layer leads to high sensitivities of 5.5 and 1.5 kPa-1 in the wide linear ranges of 0-30 and 30-250 kPa, respectively, and a fast response time of 70.4 ms. In addition, the fabricated sensor exhibits a minimum detection limit of 2 Pa and high durability over 20 000 continuous cycles even under a high pressure of 45 kPa. These results indicate that the proposed sensor can be potentially used in mobile medical monitoring devices and next-generation artificial e-skin.

Abstract:In this study, we introduce a highly flexible LC circuit-based wireless capacitive pressure sensor (CPS) that utilizes porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a dielectric layer, demonstrating its transformative potential in tactile sensing, physiological monitoring, and flexible electronics. To optimize sensor performance, various porous PDMS thin films (100 μm) with different porosities (ranging from 0 % to 75 %) were prepared using a novel steaming method, and their properties were thoroughly analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and capacitance measurements. Remarkably, the sensor with a 75 % porous PDMS film demonstrated enhanced sensitivity up to 11 times compared to the 0 % porous (pristine) PDMS film when subjected to a 300 g weight. High sensitivities of 0.046 kPa^-1, 0.036 kPa^-1, and 0.028 kPa^-1 were attained for the pressure sensor in the pressure ranges of 0–9.8 kPa, 0–19.6 kPa, and up to 29.4 kPa, respectively. Additionally, a real-time resonance frequency analysis was conducted using a network analyzer, allowing the detection of tiny pressure changes in an artificial blood vessel. Finally, the flexibility of the wireless CPS was investigated by studying various parameters, including body temperature, facial expressions such as smiling, selected speech characters (M, N, T, L), and swallowing actions.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention because of their potential applications in healthcare monitoring and human-machine interactions. However, the complicated fabrication process and the cos of sensing materials limit their widespread applications in practice. Herein, a flexible pressure sensor with outstanding performances is presented through an extremely simple and cost-efficient fabrication process. The sensing materials of the sensor are based on low-cost carbon black (CB)@airlaid paper (AP) composites, which are just prepared by drop-casting CB solutions onto APs. Through simply stacking multiple CB@APs with an irregular surface and a fiber-network structure, the obtained pressure sensor demonstrates an ultrahigh sensitivity of 51.23 kPa(-1) and an ultralow detection limit of 1 Pa. Additionally, the sensor exhibits fast response time, wide working range, good stability, as well as excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. All the comprehensive and superior performances endow the sensor with abilities to precisely detect weak air flow, wrist pulse, phonation, and wrist bending in real time. In addition, an array electronic skin integrated with multiple CB@AP sensors has been designed to identify spatial pressure distribution and pressure magnitude. Through a biomimetic structure inspired by blooming flowers, a sensor with the open-petal structure has been designed to recognize the wind direction. Therefore, our study, which demonstrates a flexible pressure sensor with low cost, simple preparation, and superior performances, will open up for the exploration of cost-efficient pressure sensors in wearable devices.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have promising applications in wearable electronic devices. However, fabricating flexible pressure sensors with wide linear range and high sensitivity remain a great challenge. Herein, a micro-nano hybrid conductive elastomer film based on carbon materials with arched micro-patterns array on surface (P-HCF) is developed to show expected sensing properties through a sustainable route. The 1D carbon fibers (CFs) and 0D carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to construct a 3D conductive network consisting of physical contact and tunneling effect among carbon materials to improve the sensing range and sensitivity. The arched micro-patterns of the P-HCF, which is designed mimicking the human fingerprints, influences the pressure distribution inside the material, giving rise to a linear sensitivity over the whole sensing range. Finite element analysis (FEA) method is investigated to simulate and analyze the compression process. The P-HCF sensor exhibits both a high sensitivity of 26.6 kPa−1 and an exceptionally wide linear range of 20 Pa − 600 kPa. The devices were demonstrated in monitoring artery pulses, assisting in diagnosing Parkinson's disease, and analyzing gait for healthcare. Furthermore, the sensors are integrated into complex devices to realize pressure distribution detection, controlling manipulator, and operating PC games. The attainment of excellent pressure sensing performance of the P-HCF, potentially initiates vast applications in health monitoring and human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors as electronic skins have attracted wide attention to their potential applications for healthcare and intelligent robotics. However, the tradeoff between their sensitivity and pressure range restricts their practical applications in various healthcare fields. Herein, a cost-effective flexible pressure sensor with an ultrahigh sensitivity over an ultrawide pressure-range is developed by combining a sandpaper-molded multilevel microstructured polydimethylsiloxane and a reduced oxide graphene film. The unique multilevel microstructure via a two-step sandpaper-molding method leads to an ultrahigh sensitivity (2.5-1051 kPa-1 ) and can detect subtle and large pressure over an ultrawide range (0.01-400 kPa), which covers the overall pressure regime in daily life. Sharp increases in the contact area and additional contact sites caused by the multilevel microstructures jointly contribute to such unprecedented performance, which is confirmed by in situ observation of the gap variations and the contact states of the sensor under different pressures. Examples of the flexible pressure sensors are shown in potential applications involving the detection of various human physiological signals, such as breathing rate, vocal-cord vibration, heart rate, wrist pulse, and foot plantar pressure. Another object manipulation application is also demonstrated, where the material shows its great potential as electronic skin intelligent robotics and prosthetic limbs.

Abstract:Sensitive and flexible pressure sensors have invoked considerable interest for a broad range of applications in tactile sensing, physiological sensing, and flexible electronics. The barrier between high sensitivity and low fabrication cost needs to be addressed to commercialize such flexible pressure sensors. A low-cost sacrificial template-assisted method for the capacitive sensor has been reported herein, utilizing a porous Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composite-based dielectric layer. The sensor shows high sensitivity of 2.42 kPa−1 along with a low limit of detection of 1.46 Pa. The high sensitivity originates from adding MWCNT to PDMS, increasing the composite polymer's dielectric constant. Besides this, the pressure sensor shows excellent stability at a cyclic loading of 9000 cycles, proving its reliability for long-lasting application in tactile and physiological sensing. The high sensitivity of the sensor is suitable for the detection of small deformations such as pulse waveforms as well as tactile pressure sensing. In addition, the paper demonstrates a simultaneous contact and non-contact sensing capability suitable for dual sensing (pressure and proximity) with a single data readout system. The dual-mode sensing capability may open opportunities for realizing compact systems in robotics, gesture control, contactless applications, and many more. The practicality of the sensor was shown in applications such as tactile sensing, Morse code generator, proximity sensing, and pulse wave sensing.

Abstract:Wearable pressure sensors have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their great potential in human healthcare applications such as physiological signals monitoring. A desirable pressure sensor should possess the advantages of high sensitivity, a simple manufacturing process, and good stability. Here, we present a highly sensitive, simply fabricated wearable resistive pressure sensor based on three-dimensional microstructured carbon nanowalls (CNWs) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The method of using unpolished silicon wafers as templates provides an easy approach to fabricate the irregular microstructure of CNWs/PDMS electrodes, which plays a significant role in increasing the sensitivity and stability of resistive pressure sensors. The sensitivity of the CNWs/PDMS pressure sensor with irregular microstructures is as high as 6.64 kPa−1 in the low-pressure regime, and remains fairly high (0.15 kPa−1) in the high-pressure regime (~10 kPa). Both the relatively short response time of ~30 ms and good reproducibility over 1000 cycles of pressure loading and unloading tests illustrate the high performance of the proposed device. Our pressure sensor exhibits a superior minimal limit of detection of 0.6 Pa, which shows promising potential in detecting human physiological signals such as heart rate. Moreover, it can be turned into an 8 × 8 pixels array to map spatial pressure distribution and realize array sensing imaging.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable electronics have emerged as highly promising technologies for the next generation of electronic devices. These advancements offer numerous advantages, such as flexibility, biocompatibility, bio-integrated circuits, and light weight, enabling new possibilities in diverse applications, including e-textiles, smart lenses, healthcare technologies, smart manufacturing, consumer electronics, and smart wearable devices. In recent years, significant attention has been devoted to flexible and stretchable pressure sensors due to their potential integration with medical and healthcare devices for monitoring human activity and biological signals, such as heartbeat, respiratory rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and muscle activity. This review comprehensively covers all aspects of recent developments in flexible and stretchable pressure sensors. It encompasses fundamental principles, force/pressure-sensitive materials, fabrication techniques for low-cost and high-performance pressure sensors, investigations of sensing mechanisms (piezoresistivity, capacitance, piezoelectricity), and state-of-the-art applications.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted great attention due to their potential in the wearable devices market and in particular in human-machine interactive interfaces. Pressure sensors with high sensitivity, wide measurement range, and low-cost are now highly desired for such practical applications. In the present investigation, an ultrasensitive pressure sensor with wide measurement range has been successfully fabricated. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (uniformly sprayed on the surface of paper) comprise the sensitivity material, while lithographed interdigital electrodes comprise the substrate. Due to the synergistic effects of CNT's high specific surface area, paper's porous structure, interdigital electrodes' efficient contact with CNT, our pressure sensor realizes a wide measurement range from 0 to 140 kPa and exhibits excellent stability through 15,000 cycles of testing. For the paper-based CNT film/interdigitated structure (PCI) pressure sensor, the connection area between the sensitive material and interdigital electrodes dominates in the low-pressure region, while internal change within the sensitive materials plays the leading role in the high-pressure region. Additionally, the PCI pressure sensor not only displays a high sensitivity of 2.72 kPa−1 (up to 35 kPa) but also can detect low pressures, such as that exerted by a resting mung bean (about 8 Pa). When attached to the surface of a human body, the pressure sensor can monitor physiological signals, such as wrist movement, pulse beats, or movement of throat muscles. Furthermore, the pressure sensor array can identify the spatial pressure distribution, with promising applications in human-machine interactive interfaces.

Abstract:Radial artery pulse pressure contains abundant cardiovascular physiological and pathological information, which plays an important role in clinical diagnosis of traditional Chinese medical science. However, many photoelectric sensors and pressure sensors will lose a large number of waveform features in monitoring pulse, which will make it difficult for doctors to precisely evaluate the patients' health. In this letter, we proposed an on-skin flexible pressure sensor for monitoring radial artery pulse. The sensor consists of the MXene (Ti3C2Tx)-coated nonwoven fabrics (n-WFs) sensitive layer and laser-engraved interdigital copper electrodes. Benefiting from substantially increased conductive paths between fibers and electrodes during normal compression, the sensor obtains high sensitivity (3.187 kPa−1), fast response time (15 ms), low detection limit (11.1 Pa), and long-term durability (20,000 cycles). Furthermore, a flexible processing circuit was connected with the sensor mounted on wrist radial artery, achieving wirelessly precise monitoring of the pulse on smart phones in real time. Compared with the commercial flexible pressure sensor, our sensor successfully captures weak systolic peak precisely, showing its great clinical potential and commercial value.

Abstract:Pressures at targeted locations inside the human body serve as critically important diagnostic parameters for monitoring various types of serious or even potentially fatal medical conditions including intracranial, intra‐abdominal, and pulmonary hypertension, as well as compartment syndromes. Implantable commercial sensors provide satisfactory accuracy and stability in measurements of pressure, yet surgical removal is required after recovery of the patient to avoid infections and other risks associated with long‐term implantation. Sensors that dissolve in biofluids (or, equivalently, bioabsorb or bioresorb) avoid the need for such surgeries, yet current designs involve either hard‐wired connections and/or fail to provide quantitative measurements over clinically relevant lifetimes. Here, a bioresorbable, wireless pressure sensor based on passive inductor‐capacitor resonance circuits in layouts and with sets of materials that overcome these drawbacks is reported. Specifically, optimized designs offer sensitivity as high as ≈200 kHz mmHg−1 and resolution as low as 1 mmHg. Encapsulation approaches that use membranes of Si3N4 and edge seals of natural wax support stable operation in vivo for up to 4 days. The bioresorbable pressure sensing technology reported here may serve as an important solution to temporary, real‐time monitoring of internal pressure for various medical conditions.
