Abstract:String theory has been initially derived from motivations coming from strong interaction phenomenology,but its application faced deep conceptual and practical difficulties. The strong interactions found their theoretical foundation elsewhere, namely on QCD, the quantum gauge field theory of quarks and gluons. Recently, the Gauge/Gravity correspondence allowed to initiate a reformulation of the connection between strings and gauge field theories, avoiding some of the initial drawbacks and opening the way to new insights on the gauge theory at strong coupling and eventually QCD. Among others, the recent applications of the Gauge/Gravity correspondence to the formation of the QGP, the quark-gluon plasma, in heavy-ion reactions seem to provide a physically interesting insight on phenomenological features of the reactions. In these lectures we will give a simplified introduction to those aspects of string theory which, at the origin and in the recent developments, are connected to strong interactions, for those students which are starting to learn QCD and QGP physics from an experimental or phenomenological point of view.

Abstract:Gauge symmetries play a central role, both in the mathematical foundations as well as the conceptual construction of modern (particle) physics theories. However, it is yet unclear whether they form a necessary component of theories, or whether they can be eliminated. It is also unclear whether they are merely an auxiliary tool to simplify (and possibly localize) calculations or whether they contain independent information. Therefore their status, both in physics and philosophy of physics, remains to be fully clarified. In this overview we review the current state of affairs on both the philosophy and the physics side. In particular, we focus on the circumstances in which the restriction of gauge theories to gauge invariant information on an observable level is warranted, using the Brout-Englert-Higgs theory as an example of particular current importance. Finally, we determine a set of yet to be answered questions to clarify the status of gauge symmetries.

Spinor Adjoints, Gauge Invariance and a new Road to Sterile Neutrinos

Abstract:In this work, we analyze the possibilities of certain gauge transformations regarding some specific spinorial dual structures. To this end, we define a general structure, which can be expressed in terms of discrete symmetry operators associated with parity, charge conjugation, and time reversal. To this end, we consider the demand of tensor covariance of the spinor bilinears under space-time transformations and also deep algebraic considerations such as the invertibility of the dual structure which guarantee that the physical information remains unchanged (respecting the Fierz-Pauli-Kofink identities), and so on. Later, we examine the global gauge freedom implicated by each choice of dual and point out the physical implications. The final goal is achieved by establishing a well-defined coupling between the Elko and standard model neutrinos in a prelude for a new formulation of the hypothetical so-called sterile neutrino.

Abstract:We discuss various weak-interaction issues for a general class of models within the SU(2) x U(1) gauge-theory framework, with special emphasis on the effects of right-handed charged currents and of quarks bearing new quantum numbers. In particular we consider the restrictions on model building which are imposed by the small K/sub L/--K/sub S/ mass difference and by the $delta$I = 1/2 rule, and we classify various possibilities for neutral current interactions and, in the case of heavy mesons with new quantum numbers, various possibilities for mixing effects analogous to K/sub L/--K/sub S/ mixing. Abstract:The Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) framework for noncommutative (NC) space-times is considered as an alternative approach to describe the physics of quantum gravity. In this formalism, the NC parameter, {\it i.e.} $\theta^{\mu\nu}$, is promoted to a coordinate of a new extended space-time. Consequently, we can construct a Field Theory in a space-time with spatial extra-dimensions. This new coordinate has a canonical momentum associated, where the effects of a new physics point of view can emerge in the fields propagation along the extra-dimension. In this paper we have introduced the gauge invariance in the DFR NC space-time by the composite symmetry $U^{\star}(N)\times U^{\star}(N)$. We have constructed the non-Abelian gauge symmetry based on DFR formalism, and we analyzed the consequences of this symmetry in the presence of such extra-dimensions. The gauge symmetry in this DFR scenario can reveal new gauge fields attached to $\theta$-extra-dimension. As an application, we have accomplished the unification of Strong Interaction with the electromagnetism and a Higgs model to give masses to the NC bosons. We have estimated their masses by using some experimental constraints of QCD.

Abstract:Gauge invariance is the basis of the modern theory of electroweak and strong interactions (the so called Standard Model). The roots of gauge invariance go back to the year 1820 when electromagnetism was discovered and the first electrodynamic theory was proposed. Subsequent developments led to the discovery that different forms of the vector potential result in the same observable forces. The partial arbitrariness of the vector potential A brought forth various restrictions on it. div A = 0 was proposed by J. C. Maxwell; 4-div A = 0 was proposed L. V. Lorenz in the middle of 1860's . In most of the modern texts the latter condition is attributed to H. A. Lorentz, who half a century later was one of the key figures in the final formulation of classical electrodynamics. In 1926 a relativistic quantum-mechanical equation for charged spinless particles was formulated by E. Schrodinger, O. Klein, and V. Fock. The latter discovered that this equation is invariant with respect to multiplication of the wave function by a phase factor exp(ieX/hc) with the accompanying additions to the scalar potential of -dX/cdt and to the vector potential of grad X. In 1929 H. Weyl proclaimed this invariance as a general principle and called it Eichinvarianz in German and gauge invariance in English. The present era of non-abelian gauge theories started in 1954 with the paper by C. N. Yang and R. L. Mills.

An effective gauge field theory of the nucleon interactions

Abstract:We discuss the possibility of constructing an effective gauge field theory of the nucleon interations based on the ideas of isotopic invariance as well as hypercharge invariance as a local gauge symmetry and spontaneous breaking of this symmetry. The constructed model predicts the structure of interactions of protons and neutrons with $\rho$- and $\sigma$-mesons, with pi-mesons and photons, as well as interactions of these particles with each other. The Lagrangian of the model consists of several parts parts involving dimension 4 and 5 gauge invariant operators. Feynman rules for physical degrees of freedom as follow from the Lagrangian define the structure of diagrams for one-boson exchanges between nucleons predicting the internucleon one-boson exchange potential as well as nucleon scattering amplitudes. The range of applicability of the model is discussed and estimates are made of the resulting coupling constants. The model predicts the mass of the neutral $\rho^0$-meson to be about $1\,MeV$ larger than the mass of the charged mesons $\rho^{\pm}$. The vector $\omega$-meson, which is a sterile particle with respect to the considered gauge group $SU_I(2)\times U_Y(1)$, can be added to the scheme by means of a gauge-invariant operator of dimension 5, as shown in Appendix ~A.

Abstract:Asymptotically free gauge theories of the strong interactions are constructed and analyzed. The reasons for doing this are recounted, including a review of renormalization-group techniques and their application to scaling phenomena. The renormalization-group equations are derived for Yang-Mills theories. The parameters that enter into the equations are calculated to lowest order and it is shown that these theories are asymptotically free. More specifically the effective coupling constant, which determines the ultraviolet behavior of the theory, vanishes for large spacelike momenta. Fermions are incorporated and the construction of realistic models is discussed. We propose that the strong interactions be mediated by a "color" gauge group which commutes with SU(3) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} SU(3). The problem of symmetry breaking is discussed. It appears likely that this would have a dynamical origin. It is suggested that the gauge symmetry might not be broken and that the severe infrared singularities prevent the occurrence of noncolor singlet physical states. The deep-inelastic structure functions, as well as the electron-positron total annihilation cross section are analyzed. Scaling obtains up to calculable logarithmic corrections, and the naive light-cone or parton-model results follow. The problems of incorporating scalar mesons and breaking the symmetry by the Higgs mechanism are explained in detail.
