Abstract:The existence of a violation of the Charge-Parity (CP) symmetry in the laws of physics is one of the cornerstone conditions for the generation of a matter–antimatter imbalance necessary to the creation of a matter-dominated universe. The first experimental evidence of the fact that this symmetry is broken in nature was obtained in 1964 in the observations of the decays of neutral kaon mesons. The magnitude of CP violation in the quark sector was measured with an increasing precision exploring also decays of other mesons. However, CP violation in the quark sector alone is not sufficient to explain the formation of matter-dominated universe, and additional sources are required. One such potential source is the lepton sector, where the CP violation could be observed by studying neutrino oscillations with neutrino beams generated by particle accelerators. This article reviews the present efforts in this direction. The results obtained in the ongoing experiments, T2K in Japan and NOvA in USA, are discussed. Additionally, the search for leptonic CP violation is one of the key goals in the programs of future experiments, DUNE in USA and Hyper-Kamiokande in Japan. These experiments and their prospects for its discovery are also presented.

Abstract:The strong CP problem can be solved if the laws of nature are invariant under a space-time parity exchanging the Standard Model with its mirror copy. We review and extend different realizations of this idea with the aim of discussing Dark Matter, neutrino physics, leptogenesis and collider physics within the same context. In the minimal realization of Ref. [1] the mirror world contains a massless dark photon, which leads to a rather interesting cosmology. Mirror electrons reproduce the dark matter abundance for masses between 500-1000 GeV with traces of strongly interacting dark matter. This scenario also predicts deviations from cold dark matter, sizable $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$ and colored states in the TeV range that will be tested in a variety of upcoming experiments. We also explore scenarios where the mirror photon is massive and the mirror particles are charged under ordinary electro-magnetism with very different phenomenology. We also show that, for the measured values of the SM parameters, the Higgs effective potential can give rise to a second minimum at large field value as required to break spontaneously the parity symmetry.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of atomic parity violation (APV), emphasizing its role in testing the Standard Model and probing new physics. The review discusses manifestations of APV, including nuclear‐spin‐independent and dependent effects, and explores isotopic comparison as a method for precision measurements. Ongoing experiments, particularly with ytterbium, aim to enhance the understanding of weak interactions, contributing to nuclear and particle physics advancements. Studies of the effects of the weak interaction in atomic systems provide tests of the Standard Model of particle physics, and explore physics scenarios beyond the Standard Model. In addition, these studies can offer valuable insights into low‐energy nuclear physics. An overview of the field of atomic parity violation is provided, and implications to nuclear and particle physics and ongoing experimental efforts are discussed. Furthermore, the plans for precision measurements of the signatures of the weak interaction in atomic ytterbium are discussed.

Abstract:The measurement of parity violation in the helicity dependence of electron-nucleon scattering provides unique information about the basic quark structure of the nucleons. In this review, the general formalism of parity-violating electron scattering is presented, with emphasis on elastic electron-nucleon scattering. The physics issues addressed by such experiments is discussed, and the major goals of the presently envisioned experimental program are identified. %General aspects of the experimental technique are reviewed and A summary of results from a recent series of experiments is presented and the future prospects of this program are also discussed.

Abstract:The known problem of fermion parity is considered on the base of investigating possible linear single-valued representations of spinor coverings of the extended Lorentz group. It is shown that in the frame of this theory does not exist, as separate concepts, P-parity and T-parity for a fermion, instead only some unified concept of (PT)-parity can be determined in a group-theoretical language.

Abstract:Improper Lorentz Transformations can be retained as exact symmetries of Nature if the particle content and gauge group of the Standard Model are doubled. The resulting ``Exact Parity Model (EPM)'' sees each ordinary particle paired with a mirror analogue. If neutrinos have mass and if they mix, then the EPM predicts that each ordinary neutrino will be maximally mixed with its mirror neutrino partner. This provides a very simple explanation for the very large mixing angle observed for atmospheric muon neutrinos by SuperKamiokande and other experiments. Maximal mixing for electron neutrinos is also well motivated by the solar neutrino problem. If small interfamily mixing is switched on, then the LSND anomaly can also be accomodated by the EPM. The EPM thus provides a unified, simple and to some extent predictive framework for explaining all of the anomalous neutrino data. This talk will briefly review the EPM or mirror neutrino scenario.

Abstract:Anomalous parity violation in four dimensions would be significant for phenomenology (baryogenesis, gravitational waves) and mathematical physics. Over the past decade, there has been a controversy in the literature as to whether free Weyl fermions give rise to (anomalous) parity violation in the trace of the energy momentum tensor; expressed by the Pontryagin densities $R\tilde R$ and $F\tilde F$ in the gravity and the gauge sector respectively. In Ref.$^1$, we have shown, using path integral methods, that the trace anomaly of a free Weyl fermion does not violate parity (i.e the absence of the Pontryagin density). In a subsequent work$^2$ we came to the stronger conclusion that for any theory compatible with dimensional regularisation, the Pontryagin-terms are equally absent. It is the \textit{finiteness} of the diffeomorphism, the Lorentz and the gauge anomalies that prevents anomalous parity violation.

First steps towards understanding neutrinos

Abstract:We retrace the first steps towards understanding neutrinos, particles predicted by Pauli in 1930 to avoid a supposed violation of time-translation symmetry. Despite the tendency to reduce the whole story to his intuition and the skill of Reines & Cowan, according to history great strides were made in thirties thanks to precious intellectual tools that combined ideas and mathematics. I refer primarily to the contribution of Fermi, who proposed in 1933 a theory in which matter particles can appear and disappear, prototypical of those at the basis of today's particle physics. This theory, despite its limitations, led physicists towards the observation of neutrinos, paved the way for further developments - e.g., it anticipated the characteristic of crossing symmetry - and had an impressive scientific legacy. We reconstruct the chain of arguments in the most accessible terms for a modern reader, emphasising the role of theoretical physics and reflecting on some alternative assessments of Fermi's contribution. A few technical remarks are collected in the appendix.

Abstract:The neutrino force results from the exchange of a pair of neutrinos. A neutrino background can significantly influence this force. In this work, we present a comprehensive calculation of the neutrino force in various neutrino backgrounds with spin dependence taken into account. In particular, we calculate the spin-independent and spin-dependent parity-conserving neutrino forces, in addition to the spin-dependent parity-violating neutrino forces with and without the presence of a neutrino background for both isotropic and anisotropic backgrounds. Compared with the vacuum case, the neutrino background can effectively violate Lorentz invariance and lead to additional parity-violating terms that are not suppressed by the velocity of external particles. We estimate the magnitude of the effect of atomic parity-violation experiments, and it turns out to be well below the current experimental sensitivity.

Abstract:The theory and phenomenology of neutrinos will be addressed, especially that relating to the observation of neutrino flavor transformations. The current status and implications for future experiments will be discussed with special emphasis on the experiments that will determine the neutrino mass ordering, the dominant flavor content of the neutrino mass eigenstate with the smallest electron neutrino content and the size of CP violation in the neutrino sector. Beyond the neutrino Standard Model, the evidence for and a possible definitive experiment to confirm or refute the existence of light sterile neutrinos will be briefly discussed.

Abstract:It has been known for some time that asymptotic parity invariance of weak interactions can provide a solution to the strong CP problem without the need for the axion. Left-right symmetric theories which employ a minimal Higgs sector consisting of a left-handed and a right-handed doublet is an example of such a theory wherein all fermion masses arise through a generalized seesaw mechanism. In this paper we present a way to understand the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry as well as the dark matter content of the universe in these theories using the Affleck-Dine (AD) leptogenesis mechanism and inflaton decay, respectively. Three gauge singlet fermions are needed for this purpose, two of which help to implement the Dirac seesaw for neutrino masses while the third one becomes the non-thermal dark matter candidate. A soft lepton number breaking term involving the AD scalar field is used to generate lepton asymmetry which suffers no wash-out effects and maintains the Dirac nature of neutrinos. This framework thus provides a unified description of many of the unresolved puzzles of the standard model that require new physics.

Abstract:A remarkably successful program of parity-violating electron scattering experiments is providing new insight into the structure of the nucleon. Measurement of the vector form factors enables a definitive study of potential strange quark-antiquark contributions to the electromagnetic structure such as the magnetic moment and charge distribution. Recent experimental results have already indicated that effects of strangeness are much smaller than theoretically expected. In addition, the neutral axial form factor appears to display substantial corrections as one might expect from an anapole effect.
