What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the formal representation of classical gauge field theory and its quantization. Specifically, by introducing the concept of jet bundles, the paper re - formulates the basic objects of classical field theory, such as the action and functional derivatives, making them clearer in the algebraic framework. In addition, the paper also explores how to use the Batalin - Vilkovisky (BV) formalism to deal with the dynamical problems in gauge theory, especially the Koszul - Tate complex of irreducible gauge theory and the related cohomology theory. ### Main problems and goals: 1. **Formalization of classical field theory**: - Re - formulate the basic concepts of classical field theory in the language of jet bundles, so that objects such as the action and functional derivatives can be expressed in a purely algebraic way. - Introduce the horizontal complex and total derivatives in order to better handle local functions and local functionals. 2. **Dynamics of gauge theory**: - Introduce Noether identities and the Koszul - Tate complex to deal with the dynamical problems in gauge theory. - Discuss the properties of irreducible gauge theory, including the construction of the generating set and non - trivial Noether operators. 3. **Batalin - Vilkovisky formalism**: - Introduce the BV formalism, including BV brackets, the master action and BRST differentials, to deal with the quantization problems of gauge theory. - Discuss the independence of gauge fixing, Slavnov - Taylor identities and Zinn - Justin equations, as well as the basic concepts of renormalization. ### Specific content: - **Chapter 1: Locality and Horizontal Complex**: - Introduces the basic concepts of jet bundles, including local functions, vector fields and horizontal complex. - Discusses the properties of total derivatives and Euler - Lagrange derivatives, and their applications in classical mechanics and field theory. - **Chapter 2: Dynamics and Koszul - Tate Complex**: - Introduces the concept of the stationary surface, that is, the hypersurface defined by the Euler - Lagrange equations. - Discusses Noether identities and their applications in electromagnetism, Yang - Mills theory and Chern - Simons theory. - Introduces the Koszul - Tate complex for dealing with the dynamical problems of gauge theory. - **Chapter 3: Symmetry and Longitudinal Differentials**: - Discusses the prolongation of transformations, the symmetries of the equations of motion and variational symmetries. - Introduces gauge symmetries and the generalized Noether theorem, as well as the gauge symmetry algebra. - **Chapter 4: Batalin - Vilkovisky Formalism**: - Introduces the motivation of the BV formalism, including BV brackets, the master action and BRST differentials. - Discusses gauge fixing, the independence of gauge fixing, Slavnov - Taylor identities and Zinn - Justin equations, as well as the basic concepts of renormalization. Through these contents, the paper aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive framework for understanding and dealing with various problems in classical gauge field theory and its quantization process.
