Abstract:After adding a scalar chiral boson to the usual superspace variables, the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz superstring is quantized in a manifestly SO(3,1) super-Poincaré covariant manner. The constraints are all first-class and form an N=2 superconformal algebra with $c=-3$. Since the Calabi-Yau degrees of freedom are described by an N=2 superconformal field theory with $c=9$, the combined Green-Schwarz and Calabi-Yau systems form the $c=6$ matter sector of a critical N=2 string. Using the standard N=2 super-Virasoro ghosts, a nilpotent BRST charge is defined and vertex operators for the massless supermultiplets are constructed. Four-dimensional superstring amplitudes can be calculated with manifest SO(3,1) super-Poincaré invariance by evaluating correlation functions of these BRST-invariant vertex operators on N=2 super-Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:We develop BRST quantization of gauge theories with a soft gauge algebra on spaces with asymptotic boundaries. The asymptotic boundary conditions are imposed on background fields, while quantum fluctuations about these fields are described in terms of quantum fields that vanish at the boundary. This leads us to construct a suitable background field formalism that is generally applicable to soft gauge algebras, and therefore to supergravity. We define a nilpotent BRST charge that acts on both the background and the quantum fields, as well as on the background and quantum ghosts. When the background is restricted to be invariant under a residual isometry group, the background ghosts must be restricted accordingly and play the role of the parameters of the background isometries. Requiring in addition that the background ghosts will be BRST invariant as well then converts the BRST algebra into an equivariant one. The background fields and ghosts are then invariant under the equivariant transformations while the quantum fields and ghosts transform under both the equivariant and the background transformations. We demonstrate how this formalism is suitable for carrying out localization calculations in a large class of theories, including supergravity defined on asymptotic backgrounds that admit supersymmetry.

Covariant quantisation of tensor multiplet models

Abstract:The Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism is applied to quantise the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric generalisation of the Freedman-Townsend (FT) model, which was proposed by Lindström and Roček in 1983 in Minkowski superspace and is lifted to a supergravity background in this paper. This super FT theory describes a non-Abelian tensor multiplet and is known to be classically equivalent to a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model. Using path integral considerations, we demonstrate that this equivalence holds at the quantum level in the sense that the quantum supercurrents in the two theories coincide. A modified Faddeev-Popov procedure is employed to quantise models for the ${\cal N}=2$ tensor multiplet in harmonic superspace. The obtained results agree with those derived by applying the Batalin-Vilkovisky scheme within the harmonic superspace setting.

Covariant quantization of the superstring in $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ with mixed flux

Abstract:A quantizable and manifestly $\text{PSU}(1,1|2) \times \text{PSU}(1,1|2)$-invariant action for the superstring in $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ with mixed NS-NS and R-R self-dual three-form flux is constructed, which is the analogue of the $\rm AdS_5 \times S^ 5$ pure spinor action for $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3$. The model is then quantized and proven to be conformal invariant at the one-loop level. We conclude by showing how one can relate the supersymmetric description with the Berkovits-Vafa-Witten $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3$ worldsheet action with mixed flux.

Quantum conformal symmetries for spacetimes in superposition

Abstract:Without a complete theory of quantum gravity, the question of how quantum fields and quantum particles behave in a superposition of spacetimes seems beyond the reach of theoretical and experimental investigations. Here we use an extension of the quantum reference frame formalism to address this question for the Klein-Gordon field residing on a superposition of conformally equivalent metrics. Based on the group structure of ``quantum conformal transformations'', we construct an explicit quantum operator that can map states describing a quantum field on a superposition of spacetimes to states representing a quantum field with a superposition of masses on a Minkowski background. This constitutes an extended symmetry principle, namely invariance under quantum conformal transformations. The latter allows to build an understanding of superpositions of diffeomorphically non-equivalent spacetimes by relating them to a more intuitive superposition of quantum fields on curved spacetime. Furthermore, it can be used to import the phenomenon of particle production in curved spacetime to its conformally equivalent counterpart, thus revealing new features in modified Minkowski spacetime.

Quantization of Weyl invariant unimodular gravity with antisymmetric ghost fields

Abstract:The enforcement of the unimodularity condition in a gravity theory by means of a Lagrange multiplier leads, in general, to inconsistencies upon quantization. This is so, in particular, when the classic linear splitting of the metric between the background and quantum fields is used. To avoid the need of introducing such a Lagrange multiplier while using the classic linear splitting, we carry out the quantization of unimodular gravity with extra Weyl symmetry by using Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) techniques. Here, two gauge symmetries are to be gauge-fixed: transverse diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. We perform the gauge-fixing of the transverse diffeomorphism invariance by using BRST transformations that involve antisymmetric ghost fields. We show that these BRST transformations are compatible with the BRST transformations needed to gauge-fix the Weyl symmetry, so that they can be combined in a set of transformations generated by a single BRST operator. Newton's law of gravitation is derived within the BRST formalism we put forward as well as the Slavnov-Taylor equation.

Abstract:A magneto-hydrodynamic model of boundary layers at the Core-Mantle Boundary (CMB) is derived and used to compute the viscous and electromagnetic torques generated by the Earth's nutation forcing. The predicted electromagnetic torque alone cannot account for the dissipation estimated from the observations of the free core nutation. The presence of a viscous boundary layer in the electromagnetic skin layer at the CMB, with its additional dissipative torques, may explain the geodetic data. An apparent Ekman number at the top of the core between 3 and $5 10^{-11}$ is inferred depending on the electrical conductivity of the mantle.

SO(2,4)-covariant quantization of the Maxwell field in a conformally flat space

Abstract:We present an SO(2,4)-covariant quantization of the free electromagnetic field in conformally flat spaces (CFS). A CFS is realized in a six-dimensional space as an intersection of the null cone with a given surface. The smooth move of the latter is equivalent to perform a Weyl rescaling. This allows to transport the SO(2,4)-invariant quantum structure of the Maxwell field from Minkowski space to any CFS. Calculations are simplified and the CFS Wightman two-point functions are given in terms of their Minkowskian counterparts. The difficulty due to gauge freedom is surpassed by introducing two auxiliary fields and using the Gupta-Bleuler quantization scheme. The quantum structure is given by a vacuum state and creators/annihilators acting on some Hilbert space. In practice, only the Hilbert space changes under Weyl rescalings. Also the quantum SO(2,4)-invariant free Maxwell field does not distinguish between two CFSs.

Supersymmetric Quantum Fields via Quantum Probability

Abstract:The super version of imprimitivity theorem is available now to describe global supersymmetry of systems using the representations of super Lie groups (SLG). This result uses the equivalence between super Harish- Chandra pairs and super Lie groups at the categorigal level and is applicable to super Poincare group and generalizes a smooth SI to super context. We apply the result to build supersymmetric quantum fields. Towards this end, we set up a super fock space of a disjoint union of super Hilbert spaces which is equivalent to super tensoring of boson (even) part symmetrically and that of fermion (odd) part antisymmetrically of the super particle Hilbert space. This leads to a super fock space that is disjoint union of bosonic and fermionic spaces, that is Z2 graded. We derive covariant Weyl operators for light-like fields, with the massless super spinorial multiplet as an illustrative example. First, we build a representation of a light-like little group in terms of Weyl operators. We then use this construction to induce a representation of Poincare group to construct the fields via super version of imprimitivity theorem.

Abstract:Yokoyama's gaugeon formalism is knwon to admit $q$-number gauge transformation. We introduce BRST symmetries into the formalism for the Yang-Mills gauge field. Owing to the BRST symmetry, Yokoyama's physical subsidiary conditions are replaced by a single condition of the Kugo-Ojima type. Our physical subsidiary condition is invariant under the $q$-number gauge transformation. Thus, our physical subspace is gauge invariant.

Abstract:Covariance is a useful property for handling supergravity theories. In this paper, we prove a covariance property of supergravity field equations: under reasonable conditions, field equations of supergravity are covariant modulo other field equations. We prove that for any supergravity there exist such covariant equations of motion, other than the regular equations of motion, that are equivalent to the latter. The relations that we find between field equations and their covariant form can be used to obtain multiplets of field equations. In practice, the covariant field equations are easily found by simply covariantizing the ordinary field equations.

Lorentz-Covariant Green-Schwarz Superstring Amplitudes

Abstract:In a recent paper, the BRST formalism for the gauge-fixed N=2 twistor-string was used to calculate Green-Schwarz supersring scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of loops and external massless states. Although the gauge-fixing procedure preserved the worldsheet N=2 superconformal invariance of the twistor-string, it broke the target-space SO(9,1) super-Poincaré invariance down to an SU(4)xU(1) subgroup. In this paper, generators for the SO(9,1) super-Poincaré transformations, as well as manifestly covariant vertex operators, are explicitly constructed out of the gauge-fixed matter fields. The earlier calculated amplitudes are then expressed in manifestly Lorentz-covariant notation.

Abstract:We review a recently proposed SuperGeometric (SG) approach to Quantum Field Theories (QFTs) that allow for scalar-fermion field transformations in a manifestly reparameterisation covariant manner. By adopting natural choices for the field-space supermetric, we show how a non-trivial field-space Riemannian curvature can be introduced in the fermionic sector, beyond the usual one that may have its origin in the scalar part of the theory. We present a minimal SG-QFT model with proper non-zero fermionic curvature both in two and four spacetime dimensions. Possible future directions in further developing SG-QFTs are discussed.

Abstract:We apply BRST method to the self-dual Chern-Simons gauge theory with matter fields and the generators of symmetries of the system from an elegant Lie algebra structure under the operation of Poisson bracket. We discuss four different cases: abelian, nonabelian, relativistic, and nonrelativistic situations and extend the system to the whole phase space including ghost fields. In addition, we obtain the BRST charge of the field system and check its nilpotence of the BRST transformation which plays an important role such as in topological quantum field theory and string theory.

Abstract:Fedosov has described a geometro-algebraic method to construct in a canonical way a deformation of the Poisson algebra associated with a finite-dimensional symplectic manifold ("phase space"). His algorithm gives a non-commutative, but associative, product (a so-called "star-product") between smooth phase space functions parameterized by Planck's constant $\hbar$, which is treated as a deformation parameter. In the limit as $\hbar$ goes to zero, the star product commutator goes to $\hbar$ times the Poisson bracket, so in this sense his method provides a quantization of the algebra of classical observables. In this work, we develop a generalization of Fedosov's method which applies to the infinite-dimensional symplectic "manifolds" that occur in Lagrangian field theories. We show that the procedure remains mathematically well-defined, and we explain the relationship of this method to more standard perturbative quantization schemes in quantum field theory.

Covariant Lagrangian Cubic Interaction Vertices For Irreducible Higher Spin Fields in Minkowski Backgrounds

Abstract:We review the application of BRST and BRST-BV approaches to construct the generic off-shell local Lorentz covariant cubic interaction vertices for irreducible massless and massive higher integer spin fields (as the candidates for massive particles in the Dark Matter problem) on $d$-dimensional Minkowski spaces. It is shown that equivalence among two Lagrangian dynamics for the same cubically interacting fields with given masses and spins obtained by means of the approach with complete BRST, $Q$, operator and of one with incomplete BRST, $Q_c$, operator in presence of consistent off-shell holonomic (traceless) constraints can be uplifted from the equivalence of the Lagrangians for free higher spin fields. We found that to get non-contradictory Lagrangians for irreducible interacting higher-spin fields within approach with $Q_c$ operator, together with off-shell algebraic constraints in addition to necessary condition of superconmmuting of $Q_c$ with appropriate holonomic constraints on the field and gauge parameter vectors, these constraints should form Abelian superalgebra both with BRST operator above and with operators of cubic vertices.

Abstract:We examine a covariant quantization of electromagnetic fields by using an operator derived from a constant scalar that can be called extended Lorentz gauge. The quantization can avoid an inconsistency between Lorentz gauge and a commutation relation, which can eliminate the need for introduction of physical state defined by a subsidiary condition and auxiliary field in Lagrangian density in Lorentz gauge. By using this quantization and indefinite metric straightforwardly, all quantum phenomena can be provided without enigmatic and paradoxical "probability interpretation".

Covariant Quantization of the Partially Massless Graviton Field in de Sitter Spacetime

Abstract:We present a covariant quantization scheme for the so-called "partially massless" graviton field in de Sitter spacetime. Our approach is founded on the principles of the de Sitter group representation theory (in the sense given by Wigner), the Wightman-Gärding axioms for gauge-invariant fields (Gupta-Bleuler scheme), and the essential analyticity prerequisites in the complexified pseudo-Riemannian manifold. To implement the quantization process effectively, we adopt coordinate-independent (global) de Sitter plane waves. These plane waves, defined in the appropriate tube domains of complex de Sitter spacetime, serve as the de Sitter counterparts to the standard Minkowskian plane waves. By employing these analytical plane waves, we enable a spectral analysis of the corresponding two-point function that closely resembles the Fourier analysis typically employed in the flat Minkowskian case. Within this framework, we present the Wightman two-point function for the partially massless graviton field, which satisfies the essential criteria of locality, covariance, and normal analyticity. Furthermore, we provide insights into the underlying Hilbert space structure and the corresponding unsmeared field operator. A direct consequence of this quantization construction confirms the widely accepted notion of light-cone propagation for the de Sitter partially massless graviton field.
