Abstract:These are lecture notes for an introductory course on noncommutative field and gauge theory. We begin by reviewing quantum mechanics as the prototypical noncommutative theory, as well as the geometrical language of standard gauge theory. Then, we review a specific approach to noncommutative field and gauge theory, which relies on the introduction of a derivations-based differential calculus. We focus on the cases of constant and linear noncommutativity, e.g., the Moyal spacetime and the so-called $\mathbb{R}^3_\lambda$, respectively. In particular, we review the $g\varphi^4$ scalar field theory and the $U(1)$ gauge theory on such noncommutative spaces. Finally, we discuss noncommutative spacetime symmetries from both the observer and particle point of view. In this context, the twist approach is reviewed and the $\lambda$-Minkowski $g\varphi^4$ model is discussed.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are to explore the theoretical basis and dynamical behaviors of non - commutative space - time, matter fields and gauge fields. Specifically, the paper aims to introduce and discuss the basic concepts, methods and applications of non - commutative field theory and gauge theory. The following are the main problems raised in the paper:
1. **Introduction of non - commutative space - time**: First, by reviewing quantum mechanics as a typical non - commutative theory and the geometric language of standard gauge theory, the paper explains why it is necessary to introduce non - commutative space - time. In particular, the paper discusses the Doplicher–Fredenhagen–Roberts (DFR) argument, which points out that at extremely small scales, the Riemannian structure of space - time may fail, resulting in an uncertainty relation for space - time coordinates:
\[
[x^\mu, x^\nu] \neq 0
\]
This non - commutativity can explain quantum gravity effects, such as the existence of a minimum area, and thus solve the ultraviolet divergence problem in quantum field theory.
2. **Specific implementation of non - commutative field theory**: The paper details the differential calculus method based on derivatives for constructing non - commutative field theory. Specifically, two types of non - commutative spaces are discussed: Moyal space and \( R^3_\lambda \) space. On these spaces, the dynamical behaviors of scalar field theory and gauge field theory are studied. For example, on Moyal space, the \( g\phi^4 \) scalar field theory and U(1) gauge theory are studied; on \( R^3_\lambda \) space, similar theories are studied.
3. **Symmetry of non - commutative space - time**: The paper explores the symmetry problem in non - commutative space - time and discusses the changes in space - time symmetry from the observer's perspective and the particle's perspective respectively. In particular, the paper introduces the twist approach and discusses the \( g\phi^4 \) model on λ - Minkowski space.
4. **Applications of non - commutative gauge theory**: The paper also discusses the applications of non - commutative gauge theory in electrodynamics, especially non - commutative electrodynamics on Moyal space and \( R^3_\lambda \) space. In addition, the paper analyzes the problems and challenges of these theories in quantum electrodynamics (QED).
In summary, the goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive introduction, covering the basic concepts, mathematical tools and specific physical applications of non - commutative field theory and gauge theory, aiming to provide readers with a systematic understanding framework.
