Abstract:These are lecture notes for an introductory course on noncommutative field and gauge theory. We begin by reviewing quantum mechanics as the prototypical noncommutative theory, as well as the geometrical language of standard gauge theory. Then, we review a specific approach to noncommutative field and gauge theory, which relies on the introduction of a derivations-based differential calculus. We focus on the cases of constant and linear noncommutativity, e.g., the Moyal spacetime and the so-called $\mathbb{R}^3_\lambda$, respectively. In particular, we review the $g\varphi^4$ scalar field theory and the $U(1)$ gauge theory on such noncommutative spaces. Finally, we discuss noncommutative spacetime symmetries from both the observer and particle point of view. In this context, the twist approach is reviewed and the $\lambda$-Minkowski $g\varphi^4$ model is discussed.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the gauge symmetry of classicalfield theories in integral formalism. A gauge invariant theory is defined interms of the invariance of the physical observables under the coordinatetransformations in principal bundle space. Through the detailed study on theproperty of non-Abelian parallel transportor under gauge transformations, weshow that it is not generally a two-point spinor, i.e. an operator to beaffected only by the gauge group elements at the two end points of the paralleltransport path, except for the pure gauge situation, and therefore the localgauge symmetry for non-Abelian models is found to be broken in non-perturbativedomain. However, an Abelian gauge theory is proved to be strictly invariantunder local gauge transformation, as it is illustrated by the invariance of theinterference pattern of electrons in Aharonov-Bohm effect. The related issuesof the phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract:We study the perturbative unitarity of noncommutative scalar field theories. Field theories with space-time noncommutativity do not have a unitary S-matrix. Field theories with only space noncommutativity are perturbatively unitary. This can be understood from string theory, since space noncommutative field theories describe a low energy limit of string theory in a background magnetic field. On the other hand, there is no regime in which space-time noncommutative field theory is an appropriate description of string theory. Whenever space-time noncommutative field theory becomes relevant massive open string states cannot be neglected.

Field Theories on Quantum Space-Times: Towards the Phenomenology of Quantum Gravity

Abstract:Noncommutative geometry is a mathematical framework that expresses the structure of space-time in terms of operator algebras. By using the tools of quantum mechanics to describe the geometry, noncommutative space-times are expected to give rise to quantum gravity effects, at least in some regime. This manuscript focuses on the physical aspects of these so-called quantum space-times, in particular through the formalism of field and gauge theories. Scalar field theories are shown to possibly trigger mixed divergences in the infra-red and ultra-violet for the 2-point function at one loop. This phenomenon is generically called UV/IR mixing and stems from a diverging behaviour of the propagator. The analysis of such divergences differs from the commutative case because the momentum space is now also noncommutative. From another perspective, a gauge theory on $\kappa$-Minkowski, a quantum deformation of the Minkowski space-time, is derived. A first perturbative computation is shown to break the gauge invariance, a pathological behaviour common to other quantum space-times. A causality toy model is also developed on $\kappa$-Minkowski, in which an analogue of the speed-of-light limit emerges. The phenomenology of quantum gravity arising from quantum space-times is discussed, together with the actual constraints it imposes. Finally, a toy model for noncommutative gravity is tackled, using the former $\kappa$-Minkowski space-time to describe the tangent space. It necessitates the notion of noncommutative partition of unity specifically defined there.

Abstract:We study gauge theories and quantum gravity in a finite interval of time $\tau $, on a compact space manifold $\Omega $. The initial, final and boundary conditions are formulated in gauge invariant and general covariant ways by means of purely virtual extensions of the theories, which allow us to "trivialize" the local symmetries and switch to invariant fields (the invariant metric tensor, invariant quark and gluon fields, etc.). The evolution operator $U(t_{\text{f}},t_{\text{i}})$ is worked out diagrammatically for arbitrary initial and final states, as well as boundary conditions on $\partial \Omega $, and shown to be well defined and unitary for arbitrary $\tau =t_{\text{f}}-t_{\text{i}}<\infty $. We illustrate the basic properties in Yang-Mills theory on the cylinder.

On general properties of Lorentz invariant formulation of noncommutative quantum field theory

Abstract:We study general properties of certain Lorentz invariant noncommutative quantum field theories proposed in the literature. We show that causality in those theories does not hold, in contrast to the canonical noncommutative field theory with the light-wedge causality condition. This is the consequence of the infinite nonlocality of the theory getting spread in all spacetime directions. We also show that the time-ordered perturbation theory arising from the Hamiltonian formulation of noncommutative quantum field theories remains inequivalent to the covariant perturbation theory with usual Feynman rules even after restoration of Lorentz symmetry.

Abstract:Recently Dabrowski etc. \cite{DL} obtained the metric and Einstein functionals by two vector fields and Laplace-type operators over vector bundles, giving an interesting example of the spinor connection and square of the Dirac operator. Pf$\ddot{a}$ffle and Stephan \cite{PS1} considered orthogonal connections with arbitrary torsion on compact Riemannian manifolds and computed the spectral action. Motivated by the spectral functionals and Dirac operators with torsion, we give some new spectral functionals which is the extension of spectral functionals to the noncommutative realm with torsion, and we relate them to the noncommutative residue for manifolds with boundary. Our method of producing these spectral functionals is the noncommutative residue and Dirac operators with torsion.

Abstract:An appropriate field configuration in non-polynomial closed string field theory is shown to correspond to a general off-shell field configuration in low-energy effective field theory. A set of string field theoretic symmetries that act on the fields in low-energy effective field theory as general coordinate transformation and antisymmetric tensor gauge transformation is identified. The analysis is carried out to first order in the fields; thus the symmetry transformations in string field theory reproduce the linear and the first non-linear terms in the gauge transformations in the low-energy effective field theory.

Abstract:Gauge-invariant quantum fields are constructed in an Abelian power-counting renormalizable gauge theory with both scalar, vector and fermionic matter content. This extends previous results already obtained for the gauge-invariant description of the Higgs mode via a propagating gauge-invariant field. The renormalization of the model is studied in the Algebraic Renormalization approach. The decomposition of Slavnov-Taylor identities into separately invariant sectors is analyzed. We also comment on some non-renormalizable extensions of the model whose 1-PI Green's functions are the flows of certain differential equations of the homogeneous Euler type, exactly resumming the dependence on a certain set of dim. 6 and dim. 8 derivative operators. The latter are identified uniquely by the condition that they span the mass and kinetic terms in the gauge-invariant dynamical fields. The construction can be extended to non-Abelian gauge groups.

Abstract:We present a gauge-theoretic interpretation of the "analytic" version of the geometric Langlands program, in which Hitchin Hamiltonians and Hecke operators are viewed as concrete operators acting on a Hilbert space of quantum states. The gauge theory ingredients required to understand this construction—such as electric–magnetic duality between Wilson and 't Hooft line operators in four-dimensional gauge theory—are the same ones that enter in understanding via gauge theory the more familiar formulation of geometric Langlands, but now these ingredients are organized and applied in a novel fashion.

Abstract:Using properties of the determinant line bundle for a family of elliptic boundary value problems, we explain how the Fock space functor defines an axiomatic quantum field theory which formally models the Fermionic path integral. The 'sewing axiom' of the theory arises as an algebraic pasting law for the determinant of the Dirac operator. We show how representations of the boundary gauge group fit into this description and that this leads to a Fock functor description of certain gauge anomalies.

Abstract:Local observables in (perturbative) quantum gravity are notoriously hard to define, since the gauge symmetry of gravity -- diffeomorphisms -- moves points on the manifold. In particular, this is a problem for backgrounds of high symmetry such as Minkowski space or de Sitter spacetime which describes the early inflationary phase of our universe. Only recently this obstacle has been overcome, and a field-dependent coordinate system has been constructed to all orders in perturbation theory, in which observables are fully gauge-invariant. We show that these field-dependent coordinates are non-commutative, and compute their commutator to second order in the Planck length. This provides the first systematic derivation of non-commutativity that arises due to quantum gravity effects.

This extends the beautiful relation between the partition function of these \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \mathcal{N} $$\end{document} = 2 gauge theories and Liouville correlators found by Alday, Gaiotto and Tachikawa. We show that the computation of these Liouville correlators with the insertion of a Liouville loop operator reproduces Pestun’s formula capturing the expectation value of a Wilson loop operator in the corresponding gauge theory. We prove that our definition of Liouville loop operators is invariant under modular transformations, which given our correspondence, implies the conjectured action of S-duality on the gauge theory loop operators. Our computations in Liouville theory make an explicit prediction for the exact expectation value of ’t Hooft and dyonic loop operators in these \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \mathcal{N} $$\end{document} = 2 gauge theories. The Liouville loop operators are also found to admit a simple geometric interpretation within quantum Teichmüller theory as the quantum operators representing the length of geodesics. We study the algebra of Liouville loop operators and show that it gives evidence for our proposal as well as providing definite predictions for the operator product expansion of loop operators in gauge theory.

Hidden gauge invariances of torsion theories: closed algebras and absence of ghosts

Abstract:We study the possible affine gauge transformations of the torsion tensor that make up Lie algebras. We find two such non-trivial structures, in which the gauge parameters are a $2$-form and a scalar. The first one gives rise to a non-abelian Lie algebra that is isomorphic to the Lorentz algebra, and which commutes with the latter. By linearizing this new gauge transformation we single out the gauge-invariant field variables on a flat background. Then, taking into account the most general power-counting renormalizable action of the torsion and imposing gauge invariance, we are able to find an invariant action that only has two free parameters. The torsion field equations of the resulting action are compatible with General Relativity in the torsionfree limit. Then, employing the spin-parity decompositions and the path integral method, we show that the theory, supplemented by the higher-derivative and Einstein-Hilbert actions, is free from kinematical ghosts, while it has a tachyonic scalar mode. Eventually, we comment on the technical difficulties that one will encounter when calculating the divergent part of the $1$-loop effective action.

A gauge-invariant measure for gauge fields on $\mathbb{CP}^2$

Abstract:We consider four-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory living on a complex projective space $\mathbb{CP}^2$ as a way of gaining insights into (3+1)-dimensional QCD. In particular, we use a complex parametrization of gauge fields on which gauge transformations act homogeneously. This allows us to factor out the gauge degrees of freedom from the volume element leading to a manifestly gauge-invariant measure for the gauge-orbit space (the space of all gauge potentials modulo gauge transformations). The terms appearing in the measure that are of particular interest are mass-like terms for the gauge-invariant modes of the gauge fields. Since these mass terms come with dimensional parameters they are significant in the context of dimensional transmutation. Moreover, the existence of local gauge-invariant mass terms on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ could be related to Schwinger-Dyson calculations of the soft gluon mass. Finally, we argue that there is a kinematic regime in which the theory can be approximated by a 4d Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory. This result can be used to draw similarities between the mechanism of confinement in four and (2+1) dimensions.

The Coulomb gauge in non-associative gauge theory

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend existence results for the Coulomb gauge from standard gauge theory to a non-associative setting. Non-associative gauge theory is based on smooth loops, which are the non-associative analogs of Lie groups. The main components of the theory include a finite-dimensional smooth loop $\mathbb{L}$, its tangent algebra $\mathfrak{l},$ a finite-dimensional Lie group $\Psi $, that is the pseudoautomorphism group of $\mathbb{L}$, a smooth manifold $M$ with a principal $\Psi $-bundle $\mathcal{P}$, and associated bundles $\mathcal{Q}$ and $\mathcal{A}$ with fibers $\mathbb{L}$ and $\mathfrak{l}$, respectively. A configuration in this theory is defined as a pair $\left( s,\omega \right) $, where $s$ is a section of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\omega $ is a connection on $\mathcal{P}$. The torsion $T^{\left( s,\omega \right) }$ is the key object in the theory, with a role similar to that of a connection in standard gauge theory. The original motivation for this study comes from $G_{2}$-geometry, and the questions of existence of $G_{2}$-structures with particular torsion types. In particular, given a fixed connection, we prove existence of configurations with divergence-free torsion, given a sufficiently small torsion in a Sobolev norm.

Abstract:The Hamiltonian description of classical gauge theories is a very well studied subject. The two best known approaches, namely the covariant and canonical Hamiltonian formalisms, have received a lot of attention in the literature. However, a full understanding of the relation between them is not available, especially when the gauge theories are defined over regions with boundaries. Here, we consider this issue, by first making it precise what we mean by equivalence between the two formalisms. Then, we explore several first-order gauge theories and assess whether their corresponding descriptions satisfy the notion of equivalence. We shall show that, even when in several cases the two formalisms are indeed equivalent, there are counterexamples that signal that this is not always the case. Thus, non-equivalence is a generic feature of gauge field theories. These results call for a deeper understanding of the subject.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a method for obtaining the nonabelian Seiberg-Witten map for any gauge group and to any order in θ. The equations defining the Seiberg-Witten map are expressed using a coboundary operator, so that they can be solved by constructing a corresponding homotopy operator. The ambiguities, of both the gauge and covariant type, which arise in this map are manifest in our formalism.
