Abstract:These are lecture notes for an introductory course on noncommutative field and gauge theory. We begin by reviewing quantum mechanics as the prototypical noncommutative theory, as well as the geometrical language of standard gauge theory. Then, we review a specific approach to noncommutative field and gauge theory, which relies on the introduction of a derivations-based differential calculus. We focus on the cases of constant and linear noncommutativity, e.g., the Moyal spacetime and the so-called $\mathbb{R}^3_\lambda$, respectively. In particular, we review the $g\varphi^4$ scalar field theory and the $U(1)$ gauge theory on such noncommutative spaces. Finally, we discuss noncommutative spacetime symmetries from both the observer and particle point of view. In this context, the twist approach is reviewed and the $\lambda$-Minkowski $g\varphi^4$ model is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a method for obtaining the nonabelian Seiberg-Witten map for any gauge group and to any order in θ. The equations defining the Seiberg-Witten map are expressed using a coboundary operator, so that they can be solved by constructing a corresponding homotopy operator. The ambiguities, of both the gauge and covariant type, which arise in this map are manifest in our formalism.

Noncommutative Geometry and Gauge theories on AF algebras

Abstract:Non-commutative geometry (NCG) is a mathematical discipline developed in the 1990s by Alain Connes. It is presented as a new generalization of usual geometry, both encompassing and going beyond the Riemannian framework, within a purely algebraic formalism. Like Riemannian geometry, NCG also has links with physics. Indeed, NCG provided a powerful framework for the reformulation of the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SMPP), taking into account General Relativity, in a single "geometric" representation, based on Non-Commutative Gauge Theories (NCGFT). Moreover, this accomplishment provides a convenient framework to study various possibilities to go beyond the SMPP, such as Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). This thesis intends to show an elegant method recently developed by Thierry Masson and myself, which proposes a general scheme to elaborate GUTs in the framework of NCGFTs. This concerns the study of NCGFTs based on approximately finite $C^*$-algebras (AF-algebras), using either derivations of the algebra or spectral triples to build up the underlying differential structure of the Gauge Theory. The inductive sequence defining the AF-algebra is used to allow the construction of a sequence of NCGFTs of Yang-Mills Higgs types, so that the rank $n+1$ can represent a grand unified theory of the rank $n$. The main advantage of this framework is that it controls, using appropriate conditions, the interaction of the degrees of freedom along the inductive sequence on the AF algebra. This suggests a way to obtain GUT-like models while offering many directions of theoretical investigation to go beyond the SMPP.

Abstract:We construct a mathematical theory ofWitten's Gauged Linear Sigma Model (GLSM). Our theory applies to a wide range of examples, including many cases with nonabelian gauge group. Both the Gromov-Witten theory of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection X and the Landau-Ginzburg dual (FJRW theory) of X can be expressed as gauged linear sigma models. Furthermore, the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence can be interpreted as a variation of the moment map or a deformation of GIT in the GLSM. This paper focuses primarily on the algebraic theory, while a companion article will treat the analytic theory.
Gauge theory on twist-noncommutative spaces

Abstract:We construct actions for four dimensional noncommutative Yang-Mills theory with star-gauge symmetry, with non-constant noncommutativity, to all orders in the noncommutativity. Our construction covers all noncommutative spaces corresponding to Drinfel'd twists based on the Poincaré algebra, including nonabelian ones, whose $r$ matrices are unimodular. This includes particular Lie-algebraic and quadratic noncommutative structures. We prove a planar equivalence theorem for all such noncommutative field theories, and discuss how our actions realize twisted Poincaré symmetry, as well as twisted conformal and twisted supersymmetry, when applicable. Finally, we consider noncommutative versions of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, conjectured to be AdS/CFT dual to certain integrable deformations of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ superstring.

Abstract:We construct a gauge theory model on the 4-dimensional ρ -Minkowski space-time, a particular deformation of the Minkowski space-time recently considered. The corresponding star product results from a combination of Weyl quantization map and properties of the convolution algebra of the special Euclidean group. We use noncommutative differential calculi based on twisted derivations together with a twisted notion of noncommutative connection. The twisted derivations pertain to the Hopf algebra of ρ -deformed translations, a Hopf subalgebra of the ρ -deformed Poincaré algebra which can be viewed as defining the quantum symmetries of the ρ -Minkowski space-time. The gauge theory model is left invariant under the action of the ρ -deformed Poincaré algebra. The kinetic part of the action is found to coincide with the one of the usual (commutative) electrodynamics.

Abstract:The Langlands Program was launched in the late 60s with the goal of relating Galois representations and automorphic forms. In recent years a geometric version has been developed which leads to a mysterious duality between certain categories of sheaves on moduli spaces of (flat) bundles on algebraic curves. Three years ago, in a groundbreaking advance, Kapustin and Witten have linked the geometric Langlands correspondence to the S-duality of 4D supersymmetric gauge theories. This and subsequent works have already led to striking new insights into the geometric Langlands Program, which in particular involve the Homological Mirror Symmetry of the Hitchin moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on algebraic curves associated to two Langlands dual Lie groups.

Abstract:Nonassociative modifications of general relativity, GR, and quantum gravity, QG, models naturally arise as star product and R-flux deformations considered in string/ M-theory. Such nonassociative and noncommutative geometric and quantum information theories were formulated on phase spaces defined as cotangent Lorentz bundles enabled with nonassociative symmetric and nonsymmetric metrics and nonlinear and linear connection structures. We outline the analytic methods and proofs that corresponding geometric flow evolution and dynamical field equations can be decoupled and integrated in certain general off-diagonal forms. New classes of solutions describing nonassociative black holes, wormholes, and locally anisotropic cosmological configurations are constructed using such methods. We develop the Batalin-Vilkovisky, BV, formalism for quantizing modified gravity theories, MGTs, involving twisted star products and semi-classical models of nonassociative gauge gravity with de Sitter/affine/ Poincar'{e} double structure groups. Such theories can be projected on Lorentz spacetime manifolds in certain forms equivalent to GR or MGTs with torsion generalizations etc. We study the properties of the classical and quantum BV operators for nonassociative phase spaces and nonassociative gauge gravity. Recent results and methods from algebraic QFT are generalized to involve nonassociative star product deformations of the anomalous master Ward identity. Such constructions are elaborated in a nonassociative BV perspective and for developing non-perturbative methods in QG.

Abstract:We systematically extend the elementary differential and Riemannian geometry of classical -gauge theory to the noncommutative setting by combining recent advances in noncommutative Riemannian geometry with the theory of coherent -groups. We show that Hermitian line bimodules with Hermitian bimodule connection over a unital pre- -algebra with -exterior algebra form a coherent -group, and we prove that weak monoidal functors between coherent -groups canonically define bar or involutive monoidal functors in the sense of Beggs–Majid and Egger, respectively. Using this, we prove that a suitable Hermitian line bimodule with Hermitian bimodule connection yields an essentially unique differentiable quantum principal -bundle with principal connection and vice versa ; here, is -deformed for a numerical invariant of the bimodule connection. Finally, we formulate and solve the interrelated lifting problems for noncommutative Riemannian structure in terms of abstract Hodge star operators and formal spectral triples, respectively; all the while, we account precisely for emergent modular phenomena. Thus, the spin Dirac spectral triple on quantum does not lift to a non-pathological twisted spectral triple on -dimensional quantum , but its formal lift nonetheless induces Kaad–Kyed's compact quantum metric space on quantum for a canonical choice of parameters.

Abstract:We study the perturbative unitarity of noncommutative scalar field theories. Field theories with space-time noncommutativity do not have a unitary S-matrix. Field theories with only space noncommutativity are perturbatively unitary. This can be understood from string theory, since space noncommutative field theories describe a low energy limit of string theory in a background magnetic field. On the other hand, there is no regime in which space-time noncommutative field theory is an appropriate description of string theory. Whenever space-time noncommutative field theory becomes relevant massive open string states cannot be neglected.

Abstract:We present a gauge-theoretic interpretation of the "analytic" version of the geometric Langlands program, in which Hitchin Hamiltonians and Hecke operators are viewed as concrete operators acting on a Hilbert space of quantum states. The gauge theory ingredients required to understand this construction—such as electric–magnetic duality between Wilson and 't Hooft line operators in four-dimensional gauge theory—are the same ones that enter in understanding via gauge theory the more familiar formulation of geometric Langlands, but now these ingredients are organized and applied in a novel fashion.

Gravity versus Noncommutative Gauge Theory: A Double Copy Perspective

Abstract:We discuss how Moyal deformations of gauge theories, which arise naturally from open string theory, fit into the paradigm of colour-kinematics duality and the double copy of gauge theory to gravity. Along the way we encounter novel noncommutative scalar field theories with rigid colour symmetry that have no interacting commutative counterparts. These scalar theories offer new perspectives on old ideas that rank one noncommutative gauge theories are gravitational theories. This is rendered explicit in four dimensions where they and their double copy images yield deformations of integrable theories describing the self-dual sectors of Yang-Mills theory and gravity.

Abstract:The geometry of submanifolds is intimately related to the theory of functions and vector bundles. It has been of fundamental importance to find out how those two objects interact in many geometric and physical problems. A typical example of this relation is that the Picard group of line bundles on an algebraic manifold is isomorphic to the group of divisors, which is generated by holomorphic hypersurfaces modulo linear equivalence. A similar correspondence can be made between the K-group of sheaves and the Chow ring of holomorphic cycles. There are two more very recent examples of such a relation. The mirror symmetry in string theory has revealed a deeper phenomenon involving special Lagrangian cycles (cf. [SYZ]). On the other hand, C. Taubes has shown that the Seiberg-Witten invariant coincides with the Gromov-Witten invariant on any symplectic 4-manifolds. In this paper, we will show another natural interaction between Yang-Mills connections, which are critical points of a Yang-Mills action associated to a vector bundle, and minimal submanifolds, which have been studied extensively for years in classical differential geometry and the calculus of variations.
