Abstract:We discuss various weak-interaction issues for a general class of models within the SU(2) x U(1) gauge-theory framework, with special emphasis on the effects of right-handed charged currents and of quarks bearing new quantum numbers. In particular we consider the restrictions on model building which are imposed by the small K/sub L/--K/sub S/ mass difference and by the $delta$I = 1/2 rule, and we classify various possibilities for neutral current interactions and, in the case of heavy mesons with new quantum numbers, various possibilities for mixing effects analogous to K/sub L/--K/sub S/ mixing. Abstract:This is a review of electroweak precision physics with particular emphasis on low-energy precision measurements in the neutral current sector of the electroweak theory and includes future experimental prospects and the theoretical challenges one faces to interpret these observables. Within the minimal Standard Model they serve as determinations of the weak mixing angle which are competitive with and complementary to those obtained near the Z-resonance. In the context of new physics beyond the Standard Model these measurements are crucial to discriminate between models and to reduce the allowed parameter space within a given model. We illustrate this for the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with or without R-parity.

Abstract:Recent achievements in nuclear forces theory open new perspectives for the next decade of low energy nuclear physics, bringing together people from very different communities. Although many developments remain to be done, the possibility to directly use QCD to describe nuclear system is a major challenge that is within reach. In this introduction to the 2009 International Joliot-Curie School (EJC2009), new trends in the strong nuclear interaction are summarized starting from quarks and ending with finite or infinite nuclear systems. At different energy scales, selected new concepts and ideas have been discussed in a rather simple way. Recent advances in the theory of nuclear forces, thanks to chiral perturbation and effective field theories, have led to a new generation of strong nuclear interaction particularly suited to low energy nuclear physics. The interesting aspects of new interactions compared to conventional forces are underlined. Recent achievements in ab initio theories that directly start from the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction and their key role to understand the three-body force are illustrated. Finally, future perspectives for standard nuclear physics theories, namely Shell Model and Energy Density Functional, are discussed.

The art of modeling nuclear reactions with weakly bound nuclei: status and perspectives

Abstract:We give an overview of the theoretical description of nuclear reactions involving weakly-bound nuclei. Some of the more widespread reaction formalisms employed in the analysis of these reactions are briefly introduced, including various recent developments. We put special emphasis on the continuum-discretized coupled-channel (CDCC) method and its extensions to incorporate core and target excitations as well as its application to three-body projectiles. The role of the continuum for one-nucleon transfer reactions is also discussed. The problem of the evaluation of inclusive breakup cross sections is addressed within the Ichimura-Austern-Vincent (IAV) model. Other methods, such as those based on a semiclasical description of the scattering process, are also briefly introduced and some of their applications are discussed and a brief discussion on topics of current interest, such as nucleon-nucleon correlations, uncertainty evaluation and non-locality is presented.

Abstract:The super-weak force is a minimal, anomaly-free U(1) extension of the standard model, designed to explain the origin of (i) neutrino masses and mixing matrix elements, (ii) dark matter, (iii) cosmic inflation, (iv) stabilization of the electroweak vacuum and (v) leptogenesis. In this talk we discuss the phenomenological status of the model and provide viable scenarios for the physics of the items in this list.

Abstract:I start with a historical review of the attempts to construct theories for the origin of nuclear forces, for which I also summaries the most important properties. The review then shifts to its main focus, which is the chiral effective field theory approach to nuclear forces. Abstract:The standard model is reconstructed by new method to incorporate strong interaction into our previous scheme based on the non-commutative geometry. The generation mixing is also taken into account. Our characteristic point is to take the fermion field so as to contain quarks and leptons all together which is almost equal to that of SO(10) grand unified theory(GUT). The space-time $M_4\times Z_2$; Minkowski space multiplied by two point discrete space is prepared to express the left-handed and right-handed fermion fields. The generalized gauge field $A(x,y)$ written in one-differential form extended on $M_4\times Z_2$ is well built to give the correct Dirac Lagrangian for fermion sector. The fermion field is a vector in 24-dimensional space and gauge and Higgs fields are written in $24\times24$ matrices. At the energy of the equal coupling constants for both sheets $y=\pm$ expected to be amount to the energy of GUT scale, we can get $\sin^2\theta_{_{W}}=3/8$ and $m_{_{H}}=\sqrt{2}m_{_{W}}$. In general, the equation $m\ma{H}=(4/\sqrt {3})m\ma{W}\sin\theta\ma{W}$ is followed. Then, it should be noticed that the same result as that of the grand unified theory such as SU(5) or SO(10) GUT is obtained without GUT but with the approach based on the non-commutative geometry and in addition the Higgs mass is related to other physical quantities as stated above.

Abstract:It is proposed that angles such as the Cabibbo angle and other angles which exist in theories with many quark flavors are calculable in theories where the quark mass spectrum is spontaneously determined by the strong interaction. Some simple model calculations of this type are presented. The mechanism is tested in a two-dimensional model where all our approximations may be made arbitrarily good. Four-dimensional, quasirealistic calculations are presented, including some models which lead to nonzero mixing angles. Two distinct stages in the determination of weak-interaction angles are identified and the relationship between them is explored.

Abstract:In this paper we survey the signals and backgrounds for a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry-breaking sector at hadron supercolliders in the TeV region. We study the process $\mathrm{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{WWX}$, and compute the rates for the "gold-plated" channels, where ${W}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $Z\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}}(l=e,\ensuremath{\mu})$, for a wide variety of models. Using a forward jet-tag, a central jet-veto, and a back-to-back lepton cut to suppress the standard model backgrounds, we demonstrate that the SSC and CERN LHC have substantial sensitivity to strong interactions in the electroweak symmetry-breaking sector.
The Weak Gravity Conjecture: A Review

Abstract:The Weak Gravity Conjecture holds that in a theory of quantum gravity, any gauge force must mediate interactions stronger than gravity for some particles. This statement has surprisingly deep and extensive connections to many different areas of physics and mathematics. Several variations on the basic conjecture have been proposed, including statements that are much stronger but are nonetheless satisfied by all known consistent quantum gravity theories. We review these related conjectures and the evidence for their validity in the string theory landscape. We also review a variety of arguments for these conjectures, which tend to fall into two categories: qualitative arguments which claim the conjecture is plausible based on general principles, and quantitative arguments for various special cases or analogues of the conjecture. We also outline the implications of these conjectures for particle physics, cosmology, general relativity, and mathematics. Finally, we highlight important directions for future research.

Abstract:Recent experimental results and developments in the theoretical treatment of neutrino-nucleus interactions in the energy range of 1-10 GeV are discussed. Difficulties in extracting neutrino-nucleon cross sections from neutrino-nucleus scattering data are explained and significance of understanding nuclear effects for neutrino oscillation experiments is stressed.
