Abstract:This is an introductory review of the AdS/CFT correspondence and of the ideas that led to its formulation. We show how comparison of stacks of D3-branes with corresponding supergravity solutions leads to dualities between conformal large $N$ gauge theories in 4 dimensions and string backgrounds of the form $AdS_5\times X_5$ where $X_5$ is an Einstein manifold. The gauge invariant chiral operators of the field theory are in one-to-one correspondence with the supergravity modes, and their correlation functions at strong `t Hooft coupling are determined by the dependence of the supergravity action on AdS boundary conditions. The simplest case is when $X_5$ is a 5-sphere and the dual gauge theory is the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. We also discuss D3-branes on the conifold corresponding to $X_5$ being a coset space $T^{1,1}=(SU(2)\times SU(2))/U(1)$. This background is dual to a certain ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal field theory with gauge group $SU(N)\times SU(N)$.

Abstract:A relationship between 4d gauge theory and 2d CFT will be reviewed from the very basics. We will first cover the introductory material on the 2d CFT and on the instantons of 4d gauge theory. Next we will explicitly calculate and check the agreement of the norm of a coherent state on the 2d side and the instanton partition function on the 4d side. We will then see how this agreement can be understood from the perspective of string and M theory.

Abstract:String theory has been initially derived from motivations coming from strong interaction phenomenology,but its application faced deep conceptual and practical difficulties. The strong interactions found their theoretical foundation elsewhere, namely on QCD, the quantum gauge field theory of quarks and gluons. Recently, the Gauge/Gravity correspondence allowed to initiate a reformulation of the connection between strings and gauge field theories, avoiding some of the initial drawbacks and opening the way to new insights on the gauge theory at strong coupling and eventually QCD. Among others, the recent applications of the Gauge/Gravity correspondence to the formation of the QGP, the quark-gluon plasma, in heavy-ion reactions seem to provide a physically interesting insight on phenomenological features of the reactions. In these lectures we will give a simplified introduction to those aspects of string theory which, at the origin and in the recent developments, are connected to strong interactions, for those students which are starting to learn QCD and QGP physics from an experimental or phenomenological point of view.

Abstract:We present a string theory realization for the correspondence between quantum integrable models and supersymmetric gauge theories. The quantization results from summing the effects of fundamental strings winding around a compact direction. We discuss the examples of the XXZ gauge/Bethe correspondence and five-dimensional \Omega--deformed SYM on M x S^1.

Abstract:In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we try to understand better the proposed duality between the fractional D2-brane supergravity solutions of (Nucl. Phys. B 606 (2001) 18, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0101096" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0101096">hep-th/0101096</a>) and a confining 2+1 dimensional gauge theory. Based on the similarities between this fractional D2-brane solution and D3-brane supergravity solutions with more firmly established gauge theory duals, we conjecture that a confining q-string in the 2+1 dimensional gauge theory is dual to a wrapped D4-brane. In particular, the D4-brane looks like a string in the gauge theory directions but wraps a S**3 in S**4 in the transverse geometry. For one of the supergravity solutions, we find a near quadratic scaling law for the tension: $T \sim q (N-q)$. Based on the tension, we conjecture that the gauge theory dual is SU(N) far in the infrared. We also conjecture that a quadratic or near quadratic scaling is a generic feature of confining 2+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theories.

Abstract:Light-cone gauge-fixed sigma models on AdSn×Sn backgrounds play an important role in the integrability formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The string spectrum of the sigma model is gauge independent, however the Hamiltonian and scattering matrix of the transverse world sheet fields are not. We study how these change for a large family of inequivalent light-cone gauges, which are interpreted as TT ̄ , J ̃Tτ , JTσ , and Jτ deformations. We investigate the moduli space of inequivalent light-cone gauges and, specializing to AdS5×S5 , compute the different light-cone gauge symmetry algebras, well known to be psu(2|2)⊕2⊕u(1)⊕2 for the standard gauge-fixing. Abstract:We study gauge theories and quantum gravity diagrammatically in a finite interval of time τ , on a compact space manifold Ω . The initial, final, and boundary conditions are formulated in gauge invariant and general covariant ways by means of purely virtual extensions of the theories, which allow us to "trivialize" the local symmetries and switch to invariant fields (the invariant metric tensor, invariant quark, and gluon fields, etc.). The evolution operator U(tf,ti) is worked out for arbitrary initial and final states, as well as general boundary conditions on ∂Ω . We show that U(tf,ti) is well defined and diagrammatically unitary for every τ=tf−ti<∞ . The formulation is extended to include purely virtual particles. In quantum gravity, where the cosmological constant ΛC challenges the definition of an S matrix, the results allow us to prove unitarity at τ<∞ . Abstract:The discovery of a duality between Anti-de Sitter spaces (AdS) and Conformal Field Theories (CFT) has led to major advances in our understanding of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. String theory methods and AdS/CFT correspondence maps provide new ways to think about difficult condensed matter problems. String theory methods based on the AdS/CFT correspondence allow us to transform problems so they have weak interactions and can be solved more easily. They can also help map problems to different descriptions, for instance mapping the description of a fluid using the Navier–Stokes equations to the description of an event horizon of a black hole using Einstein's equations. This textbook covers the applications of string theory methods and the mathematics of AdS/CFT to areas of condensed matter physics. Bridging the gap between string theory and condensed matter, this is a valuable textbook for students and researchers in both fields.

Abstract:This is an introduction to the microscopic techniques of non-rational bulk and boundary conformal field theory which are needed to describe strings moving in non-compact curved backgrounds. The latter arise, e.g. in the context of AdS/CFT-like dualities and for studies of time-dependent processes. After a general outline of the central concepts, we focus on two specific but rather prototypical models: Liouville field theory and the 2D cigar. Rather than following the historical path, the presentation attempts to be systematic and self-contained.
