Abstract:This is an introductory review of the AdS/CFT correspondence and of the ideas that led to its formulation. We show how comparison of stacks of D3-branes with corresponding supergravity solutions leads to dualities between conformal large $N$ gauge theories in 4 dimensions and string backgrounds of the form $AdS_5\times X_5$ where $X_5$ is an Einstein manifold. The gauge invariant chiral operators of the field theory are in one-to-one correspondence with the supergravity modes, and their correlation functions at strong `t Hooft coupling are determined by the dependence of the supergravity action on AdS boundary conditions. The simplest case is when $X_5$ is a 5-sphere and the dual gauge theory is the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. We also discuss D3-branes on the conifold corresponding to $X_5$ being a coset space $T^{1,1}=(SU(2)\times SU(2))/U(1)$. This background is dual to a certain ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal field theory with gauge group $SU(N)\times SU(N)$.

Duality in Gauge Theory, Gravity and String Theory

Abstract:Einstein's theory in the vacuum was recently shown to possess an $SO(2)$ duality invariance, which is broken by coupling to matter. Duality invariance can be restored by enlarging the phase space of the theory to allow for violations of the algebraic Bianchi identity. We show that in cases where the matter content can be understood as a component of the torsion tensor duality can be restored and we compute the corresponding duality current. We consider the case of NS-NS gravity as an example and find that the duality current is given by the divergence of the axion. In the linearized approximation of the low energy heterotic string theory these results imply that duality of the generalized Riemann curvature tensor implements Riemannian, axion-dilaton and electro-magnetic dualities simultaneously.

Introduction to String Theory and Gauge/Gravity duality for students in QCD and QGP phenomenology

Abstract:String theory has been initially derived from motivations coming from strong interaction phenomenology,but its application faced deep conceptual and practical difficulties. The strong interactions found their theoretical foundation elsewhere, namely on QCD, the quantum gauge field theory of quarks and gluons. Recently, the Gauge/Gravity correspondence allowed to initiate a reformulation of the connection between strings and gauge field theories, avoiding some of the initial drawbacks and opening the way to new insights on the gauge theory at strong coupling and eventually QCD. Among others, the recent applications of the Gauge/Gravity correspondence to the formation of the QGP, the quark-gluon plasma, in heavy-ion reactions seem to provide a physically interesting insight on phenomenological features of the reactions. In these lectures we will give a simplified introduction to those aspects of string theory which, at the origin and in the recent developments, are connected to strong interactions, for those students which are starting to learn QCD and QGP physics from an experimental or phenomenological point of view.

Self-dual gravity and color/kinematics duality in AdS$_4$

Abstract:We show that self-dual gravity in Euclidean four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_4$) can be described by a minimally coupled scalar field with a cubic interaction written in terms of a deformed Poisson bracket, providing a remarkably simple generalisation of the Plebanski action for self-dual gravity in flat space. This implies a novel symmetry algebra in self-dual gravity, notably an AdS$_4$ version of the so-called kinematic algebra. We also obtain the 3-point interaction vertex of self-dual gravity in AdS$_4$ from that of self-dual Yang-Mills by replacing the structure constants of the Lie group with the structure constants of the new kinematic algebra, implying that self-dual gravity in AdS$_4$ can be derived from self-dual Yang-Mills in this background via a double copy. This provides a concrete starting point for defining the double copy for Einstein gravity in AdS$_4$ by expanding around the self-dual sector. Moreover, we show that the new kinematic Lie algebra can be lifted to a deformed version of the $w_{1+\infty}$ algebra, which plays a prominent role in celestial holography.

Dualities from dualities in 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$

Abstract:We propose 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ dualities between SU(N) gauge theories with fundamental and antisymmetric chiral matter and Landau-Ginzburg theories with chiral and Fermi multiplets. Many of these dualities can be derived by topologically twisting 4d s-confining gauge theories on a two-sphere, with integer non-negative $R$ charges. We provide various checks of the dualities, showing that they descend from more "basic" dualities, similarly to analogous derivations in higher dimensions. The proof are based on the fact that the antisymmetric tensors can be traded with USp(2n) gauge theories with fundamental chirals, mimicking the higher dimensional mechanism known as tensor deconfinement. The quivers obtained in this way can be shown to be dual to LG models after applying other elementary "basic" dualities.

String Tensions and Three Dimensional Confining Gauge Theories

Abstract:In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we try to understand better the proposed duality between the fractional D2-brane supergravity solutions of (Nucl. Phys. B 606 (2001) 18, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0101096" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0101096">hep-th/0101096</a>) and a confining 2+1 dimensional gauge theory. Based on the similarities between this fractional D2-brane solution and D3-brane supergravity solutions with more firmly established gauge theory duals, we conjecture that a confining q-string in the 2+1 dimensional gauge theory is dual to a wrapped D4-brane. In particular, the D4-brane looks like a string in the gauge theory directions but wraps a S**3 in S**4 in the transverse geometry. For one of the supergravity solutions, we find a near quadratic scaling law for the tension: $T \sim q (N-q)$. Based on the tension, we conjecture that the gauge theory dual is SU(N) far in the infrared. We also conjecture that a quadratic or near quadratic scaling is a generic feature of confining 2+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theories.

Abstract:In recent years two intriguing observations have been made for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and for superstrings on AdS5xS5: In the planar limit the computation of the spectrum is vastly simplified by the apparent integrability of the models. Furthermore, planar scattering amplitudes of the gauge theory display remarkable features which have been attributed to the appearance of a dual superconformal symmetry. Here we review the connection of these two developments from the point of view of the classical symmetry by means of a super-T-self-duality. In particular, we show explicitly how the charges of conformal symmetry and of the integrable structure are related to the dual ones.

What can gauge-gravity duality teach us about condensed matter physics?

Abstract:I discuss the impact of gauge-gravity duality on our understanding of two classes of systems: conformal quantum matter and compressible quantum matter. The first conformal class includes systems, such as the boson Hubbard model in two spatial dimensions, which display quantum critical points described by conformal field theories. Questions associated with non-zero temperature dynamics and transport are difficult to answer using conventional field theoretic methods. I argue that many of these can be addressed systematically using gauge-gravity duality, and discuss the prospects for reliable computation of low frequency correlations. Compressible quantum matter is characterized by the smooth dependence of the charge density, associated with a global U(1) symmetry, upon a chemical potential. Familiar examples are solids, superfluids, and Fermi liquids, but there are more exotic possibilities involving deconfined phases of gauge fields in the presence of Fermi surfaces. I survey the compressible systems studied using gauge-gravity duality, and discuss their relationship to the condensed matter classification of such states. The gravity methods offer hope of a deeper understanding of exotic and strongly-coupled compressible quantum states.

Non-Abelian T-dualities in Two Dimensional $(0,2)$ Gauged Linear Sigma Models

Abstract:Two dimensional gauged linear sigma models(GLSMs) with $(0,2)$ supersymmetry and $U(1)$ gauge group possesing global symmetries are considered. For the case obtained as a reduction from the $(2,2)$ supersymmetric GLSM, we find the Abelian T-dual, comparing with previous studies. Then, the Abelian T-dual model of the pure $(0,2)$ theory is found. Instanton corrections are also discussed in both situations. In the cases under study we explore the vacua for the scalar potential and we analyse the target space geometry of the dual model. A model with gauge symmetry $U(1)\times U(1)$ is also discussed as precursor of an interesting example with non-Abelian global symmetry. Non-Abelian T-dualization of $U(1)$ $(0,2)$ $2d$ GLSMs is implemented for models which arise as a reduction from $(2,2)$ supersymmetry; we study a concrete model with $U(1)$ gauge symmetry and $SU(2)$ global symmetry. It is shown that for a positive definite scalar potential, the dual vacua to $\mathbb{P}^1$ constitutes a disk. Instanton corrections to the superpotential are obtained and shown to be encoded in a shifting of the holomorphic function ${E}$. We conclude by analyzing an example with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ global symmetry and we obtain that the space of dual vacua to $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ consists of two copies of the disk, also for the case of positive definite potential. Here we are able to fully integrate the equations of motion leading to non-Abelian duality, improving with respect to previous $(2,2)$ studies.

The role of Sp(2n) duality in quantum theory

Abstract:D-dimensional maximal supergravities type I with G/H coset spaces have global G-symmetry and local H symmetry, which can be gauge-fixed in symmetric or Iwasawa-type gauges. Maximal D-dimensional supergravities type II derived from higher dimensions without dualization have less local and global symmetries. In 4D, Gaillard-Zumino duality group Sp(56) enhances U-duality symmetry group $E_{7(7)}$. Using the Hamiltonian path integral, we show how extra symmetries beyond $E_{7(7)}$, serve to establish S-matrix equivalence of supergravities I and II in different gauges. Enhanced dualities are not available in D $> 4$. This is consistent with the existence of local H symmetry and global G symmetry anomalies and UV divergences in D $> 4$ supergravities, and with the absence of these anomalies and UV divergences, so far, in 4D ${\cal N}\geq 5$ supergravities.

Abstract:In this series of lectures I present a review of the geometric structures of supergravity in diverse dimensions mostly relevant to p-brane physics and to pinpoint the correspondence between the macroscopic and microscopic description of branes. In particular I review duality transformations, coset manifold structures and the general steps involved by the process of gauging supergravity lagrangians both with respect to compact, non compact and non semisimple groups. I focus specifically on the issue of the Domain Wall field theory correspondence and its relation with the gaugings of supergravity in p+2 dimensions. A complete review of the geometries involved by D=5, N=2 supergravity and of its most general form is given with emphasis on the problem of finding smooth supersymmetric realizations of the Randall Sundrum scenarios. I also give a general review of the algebraic machinery involved by the Solvable Lie algebra description of the scalar manifolds of supergravity and I emphasize its distinguished role in pinpointing the superstring interpretation of supergravity p brane solutions and the macroscopic/microscopic correspondence.
Gauged Supergravities from Spherical Reductions

Abstract:This dissertation is devoted to deriving the bosonic sectors of certain gauged supergravities in various dimensions from reducing eleven-dimensional supergravity, type IIA and type IIB supergravities in ten dimensions on certain spherical spaces. Explicit non-linear Kaluza-Klein ansätze for reductions of eleven-dimensional supergravity and of type IIA and type IIB supergravities on $S^n$ and $S^n\times T^m$ are presented. Knowing explicit non-linear ansätze is proven to be very useful in finding super Yang-Mills operators of gauge theories via AdS/CFT correspondence. We present a sample calculation which allows us to find a super Yang-Mills operator using a non-linear ansatz. Knowing non-linear ansätze is also useful for finding supergravity duals to certain twisted supersymmetric gauge theories. These supergravity solutions are branes wrapped on certain supersymmetric cycles. Some solutions, which are dual to gauge theories in three and five dimensions, are presented.

Abstract:These lectures aim to provide a global picture of the spaces of consistent quantum supergravity theories and string vacua in higher dimensions. The lectures focus on theories in the even dimensions 10, 8, and 6. Supersymmetry, along with with anomaly cancellation and other quantum constraints, places strong limitations on the set of physical theories which can be consistently coupled to gravity in higher-dimensional space-times. As the dimensionality of space-time decreases, the range of possible supergravity theories and the set of known string vacuum constructions expand. These lectures develop the basic technology for describing a variety of string vacua, including heterotic, intersecting brane, and F-theory compactifications. In particular, a systematic presentation is given of the basic elements of F-theory. In each dimension, we summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the extent to which supergravity theories not realized in string theory can be shown to be inconsistent.

Abstract:We study the general formulation of gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with sixteen supercharges keeping duality covariance by means of the embedding tensor formalism. We first classify all inequivalent duality orbits of consistent deformations. Secondly, we analyse the complete set of critical points in a systematic way. Interestingly, we find the first examples of stable de Sitter solutions within a theory with such a large amount of supersymmetry.

Soft Particles and Infinite-Dimensional Geometry

Abstract:In the sigma model, soft insertions of moduli scalars enact parallel transport of $S$-matrix elements about the finite-dimensional moduli space of vacua, and the antisymmetric double-soft theorem calculates the curvature of the vacuum manifold. We explore the analogs of these statements in gauge theory and gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes, where the relevant moduli spaces are infinite-dimensional. These models have spaces of vacua parameterized by (trivial) flat connections at spatial infinity, and soft insertions of photons, gluons, and gravitons parallel transport $S$-matrix elements about these infinite-dimensional manifolds. We argue that the antisymmetric double-soft gluon theorem in $d+2$ bulk dimensions computes the curvature of a connection on the infinite-dimensional space Map$(S^d,G)/G$. The analogous metrics in abelian gauge theory and gravity are flat, as indicated by the vanishing of the antisymmetric double-soft theorems in those models. In other words, Feynman diagram calculations not only know about the vacuum manifold of Yang-Mills theory, they can also be used to compute its curvature. The results have interesting implications for flat holography.

T-dualities in gauged linear sigma models

Abstract:We describe non-Abelian T-dualities for $\mathcal{N} = 2$ two dimensional gauged linear sigma model (GLSM). We start with the case of left and right $(2, 2)$ supersymmetry (SUSY), $U(1)$ gauge group, and global non-Abelian symmetries. Our analysis applies to the specialization of the GLSM with the global group $SU(2)\times SU(2)$, whose original model is the resolved conifold. We analyze the dual model and compute the periods on the dual geometry, matching the effective potential for the $U(1)$ gauge field, and discuss the coincident singularity at the conifold point. We further present the non-Abelian T-dualization of models with $(0,2)$ SUSY, analyzing the case of global symmetry $SU(2)$. In this case the full non-Abelian duality can be solved. The dual geometries with and without non-perturbative corrections to the superpotential coincide. The structure of the dual non-perturbative corrections employed are determined based on symmetry arguments. The non-Abelian T-dualities reviewed here lead to potential new symmetries between physical theories.

Abstract:We review (non-supersymmetric) gauge theories of four-dimensional space-time symmetries and their quadratic action. The only true gauge theory of such a symmetry (with a physical gauge boson) that has an exact geometric interpretation, generates Einstein gravity in its spontaneously broken phase and is anomaly-free, is that of Weyl gauge symmetry (of dilatations). Gauging the full conformal group does not generate a true gauge theory of physical (dynamical) associated gauge bosons. Regarding the Weyl gauge symmetry, it is naturally realised in Weyl conformal geometry, where it admits two different but equivalent geometric formulations, of same quadratic action: one non-metric but torsion-free, the other Weyl gauge-covariant and metric (with respect to a new differential operator). To clarify the origin of this intriguing result, a third equivalent formulation of this gauge symmetry is constructed using the standard, modern approach on the tangent space (uplifted to space-time by the vielbein), which is metric but has vectorial torsion. This shows an interesting duality vectorial non-metricity vs vectorial torsion of the corresponding formulations, related by a projective transformation. We comment on the physical meaning of these results.

Abstract:In the gauge theoretic approach of gravity, General Relativity is described by gauging the symmetry of the tangent manifold in four dimensions. Usually the dimension of the tangent space is considered to be equal to the dimension of the curved manifold. However, the tangent group of a manifold of dimension $d$ is not necessarily $SO_d$. It has been suggested earlier that by gauging an enlarged symmetry of the tangent space in four dimensions one could unify gravity with internal interactions. Here we consider such a unified model by gauging the $SO_{(1,17)}$ as the extended Lorentz group overcoming in this way some difficulties of the previous attempts of similar unification and eventually we obtain the $SO_{10}$ GUT, supplemented by an $SU_2 \times SU_2$ global symmetry.

4D de Sitter from String Theory via 6D Supergravity

Abstract:We obtain de Sitter (dS) solutions from controlled string-theory constructions. We review how minimal gauged chiral 6D supergravity evades standard dS no-go theorems by having a positive scalar potential and describe the known 4D classical dS, AdS and Minkowski solutions. Grimm and collaborators recently found a related 6D supergravity by direct F-theory Calabi-Yau flux compactifications and we construct classical 4D maximally symmetric solutions for this 6D supergravity. These provide explicit solutions of the higher-dimensional field equations corresponding to dS, AdS and flat spacetimes in 4D, allowing interesting hierarchies of scales. We show how the singularities of these solutions are consistent with the back-reaction of two space-filling 4D brane-like sources situated within the extra dimensions and infer some of the properties of these sources using the formalism of point particle effective field theory (PPEFT), showing the sources are not vanilla objects like D branes. These tools relate the near-source asymptotic forms of bulk fields to source properties and have been extensively tested for more prosaic physical systems involving the back-reaction of small sources, such as the dependence of atomic energy levels on nuclear properties. We use it to determine the tension of the brane-like sources (that can be positive) and its derivatives. We verify that the solutions are in the weak coupling/large volume regime required to neglect quantum and $\alpha'$ effects.
