Abstract:Many engineering Ph.D.s are finding career opportunities in industry. Despite the increase in number of Ph.D. engineers working in industry, there is little research on what it takes to be a successful engineering Ph.D. in industry. This study explores the characteristics, and expectations of engineering Ph.D.s by interviewing ten engineering Ph.D.s working in industry. These preliminary findings reveal that responsibilities of engineering Ph.D.s in industry include more than research and development. Among other things, engineering Ph.D.s that work in this sector are expected to communicate effectively and teach others. The characteristics that engineering Ph.D.s need to possess to be successful in industry are also discussed.

Abstract:Purpose An increasing number of doctoral graduates are seeking non-academic employment. While statistics have revealed multiple aspects regarding the non-academic employment they hold, there is insufficient documentation of what has led them to leave academia and to what extent they are prepared for non-academic positions. This paper aims to address this gap and reports on five Chinese doctoral graduates' reflections on their change in career choices. Design/methodology/approach This study is exploratory and follows the approach of qualitative multi-case studies. The data includes in-depth interviews with five Chinese doctoral graduates and their responses to a survey. The paper applies a theoretical perspective drawing from protean career and boundaryless career theories, focusing on the participants' agency in managing career choices and their meaning making of career decision-making. Findings The study has found that, besides the factors mentioned in the literature, such as lack of academic positions, pressure related to academic work and lack of career planning, some participants were directed by their intrinsic values, and agency plays an important role in their career preparation. Practical implications The study makes recommendations on university career guidance for doctoral students. Originality/value This paper documents why and how doctoral students change their career choices, which have not been sufficiently documented in the literature. As well, the theoretical perspective used provides an innovative way to interpret doctoral students' career decision-making.

Abstract:The globally expanding doctoral education and the diminishing availability of academic job opportunities have prompted an increasing proportion of PhD graduates to seek employment beyond academia, drawing a growing scholarly interest. However, the existing literature on doctoral career pathways tends to be fragmented and dispersed, given the idiosyncratic individual and educational characteristics of doctorates grappling with the complex structural factors. To depict a comprehensive picture of the diversifying employment trajectories of doctorates across various geographical, disciplinary and sectoral contexts, this study conducts a systematic review, scouring 831 pertinent journal articles from the Web of Science. Following a set of inclusion criteria, 31 papers were ultimately selected to identify the key factors shaping employment trajectories of PhD graduates at structural (national supply and demand), institutional (employers' perceptions) and individual (doctorates' characteristics) levels. Drawing on the boundaryless and value‐based career theories, the authors develop a four‐dimension analytical framework, within which the findings of the 31 papers in East Asian and Western contexts are analysed. Overall, stakeholders in Western systems generally recognise the trend of PhD graduates securing non‐academic employment, whereas East Asian nations appear less receptive to this agenda. Meanwhile, due to their strong emphasis on research skills utilisation and employment stability, PhD graduates in certain economies find it challenging to pursue satisfying and successful careers, warranting increased attention. Building on the findings, we propose a four‐quadrat model in an effort to provide a tool for evaluating the capacity to absorb doctoral workforces of specific systems by categorising the doctoral professions. Highlighting shared patterns observed across various higher education systems and distinct trends prevalent in specific economies, this paper addresses key topics in doctoral education and doctorate employment literature such as labour market conditions, employment outcomes, job satisfaction, skills (mis)matches and sustainable careers.

Abstract:Our study presents the career trajectories of engineering Ph.D.s from the perspectives of both industry and academia. In this report, we identified approximately 34 engineering Ph. D. graduates from U.S. programs who: (1) worked only in academia; (2) worked only in industry; (3) worked in academia first and now work in industry; or (4) worked in industry first and now work on academia. Using curricula vitae (CVs) as a main data source, we mapped out the detailed career trajectories of each participant. The comparisons within and across different groups characterized the particular career developmental models for each group. Both academia-only and industry-only groups demonstrate a relative linear developmental career path. However, it is notable that participants in the academia-only group tend to hold multiple appointments when compared to their industry-only peers. Participants from groups (3) and (4) showed much more complex career patterns than the first two groups. Also, all of our participants in the last two groups hold leadership positions currently. This observation emphasized the importance of leadership skills training for engineering Ph. D. s. Overall, this reports summarized pilot findings on career trajectories of engineering Ph.D.s. It provides unique insights for both the career planning of recent engineering Ph.D. graduates and the training and preparation of current engineering Ph.D.s.

Abstract:The transition from university to working life is a challenging phase for graduates. The focus in the present longitudinal study is on employability factors and their association with this transition and with early career success. The participants were 43 graduates who were interviewed at the time of their graduation and filled in a follow-up questionnaire three years later. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results revealed five employability factors relating early career success: (1) career plans and goals, (2) perceived competences related to the degree, (3) self-efficacy beliefs, (4) activity and (5) work experience and networks. Three transition groups emerged based on the differences in employability factors and career success, which we labelled smooth transition, progressive transition and a rocky road. The results revealed individual variation in employability factors and in the kind of challenges these graduates encountered in the transition phase and in their early career. An awareness of the ways in which graduates differ could help educators to develop practises that better support students and graduates in the transition to working life. These findings highlight the importance of active career planning during one's studies.

Abstract:This article examines the role of student job search strategies that differ in goal-directedness (focused, exploratory, and haphazard) in achieving successful university-to-work transitions (i.e., employment in jobs with high skill use/development and qualification–job match). The relationship between job search and employment outcomes is considered in two labor market contexts—high or low ambiguity—which are represented by the comparison between arts, humanities, and social sciences (AHSS) and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduates, respectively. Using two-wave survey data, we find that job search strategies during university do not explain, yet differentially impact, successful outcomes one year after graduation. Fully exploring opportunities was particularly beneficial for STEM graduates (low ambiguity context) and more focused job search was beneficial for AHSS graduates (high ambiguity context). Paradoxically, findings both question and reinforce the efficacy of career agency for overcoming barriers to labor market entry, depending on the job search context. The study contributes to the agency and context debates relevant for school-to-work transitions.

Abstract:Postdoctoral training is a career stage often described as a demanding and anxiety-laden time when many promising PhDs see their academic dreams slip away due to circumstances beyond their control. We use a unique data set of academic publishing and careers to chart the more or less successful postdoctoral paths. We build a measure of academic success on the citation patterns two to five years into a faculty career. Then, we monitor how students' postdoc positions -- in terms of relocation, change of topic, and early well-cited papers -- relate to their early-career success. One key finding is that the postdoc period seems more important than the doctoral training to achieve this form of success. This is especially interesting in light of the many studies of academic faculty hiring that link Ph.D. granting institutions and hires, omitting the postdoc stage. Another group of findings can be summarized as a Goldilocks principle: it seems beneficial to change one's direction, but not too much.

Abstract:In recent years there have been discussions surrounding the under-preparedness of Ph.D. graduates of highly specialized doctoral programs, lacking interdisciplinary focus and professional skill development, to succeed in future complex work environments. To address these concerns, Golde and Walker suggest re-conceptualizing doctoral education such that Ph.D. holders are developed as "stewards'' of their disciplines. To provide initial insights into how engineering can be viewed through a stewardship lens, the authors conducted a content analysis of thirty-six curricula vitae of engineering Ph.D. holders who have been employed in one of four occupational sectors- (1) academia only, (2) industry only, (3) academia and then industry, or (4) industry and then academia. This effort seeks to operationalize their experiences into the three tenants of the stewardship framework-generation, conservation and transformation-and provide a new perspective for future discussions around the preparation and expectations of engineering Ph.D. holders. Industry participants reported higher generation and conservation than academia only participants; academia to industry participants reported higher instances of generation followed by conservation; industry to academia participants, on average, reported higher generation; and a new category, "other,'' was the lowest instance across all groups.

Abstract:Increasing numbers of doctorate graduates work outside academia. This raises the question to what extent doctoral education offers the skills that are required for non-academic employability. In a survey of 2,193 recently graduated PhDs from Dutch universities, we studied what recent PhD graduates perceive as the main value of a PhD degree. In addition, they indicated to which extent they developed certain skills during the PhD and the extent to which they need them in their current job. The main values that doctorate holders attach to their doctoral education and degree are preparation for career goals, development of research skills, enjoyment, and social status. Most of the values mentioned are geared towards academic careers. Furthermore, we show that scientific skills are developed sufficiently during doctoral education, but management and social skills are not. This mismatch is larger for PhD holders working outside the academia than within academia.

Abstract:Biotech and pharmaceutical companies recruit postdoctoral researchers to perform cutting‐edge research beyond the scope of the designated program. A postdoctoral position in industry provides a young scientist an insight into the world of applied scientific research, as well as into the management lifestyle of industry, which differs tremendously from that of academia. It also offers the opportunity of conducting scientific research using state‐of‐the‐art research facilities and interacting with an extremely diversified team of talented scientists, engineers, and business professionals. Financially, industrial postdoctoral salaries are considerably higher than their counters in academic programs. But most important of all, an industrial postdoctoral position offers the candidate exposure inside the company that might lead to a permanent position. However, it is important to know that many companies do not view their postdoctoral programs as recruitment tools. Research is usually focused on an aspect related to commercial technology, and publications delayed to ensure proprietary information remains private. As a result, the scope for future job hunts might be narrow. In summary, an industrial postdoctoral position offers a candidate the industrial experience and leadership potential they will need for landing a position in industry but is not without its own disadvantages.

Abstract:Knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes (KSAAs) are important attributes required of university graduates to become effective Human Resource (HRM)/Employment Relations (ER) professionals. However, is what is taught and practiced at universities sufficient to equip graduates with the necessary KSAAs to meet employer expectations in industry? Furthermore, do graduates feel confident and job ready entering professional practice post completion of their undergraduate study? These questions raise important considerations around the effectiveness of the broader 'employability' agenda, and whether the immediate needs of both employers and graduates are being met. Insights into HRM/ER graduates' transition into employment were collected from 33 semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 HRM/ER graduates, 14 employers and four industry stakeholders within the field. The paper discusses graduates' transition from university to employment and whether they felt prepared in meeting employer expectations. Contrasting perspectives emerged as graduates indicated that they were satisfied with their university experience and subsequent transition to employment, while employers were mostly satisfied, they provided recommendations towards improving graduate outcomes. The research initiates new ideas for exploring the employability of university graduates and suggests further research in supporting the transition of future graduates into roles and careers in HRM and ER.

Abstract:As the result of many years of training, becoming a Principal Investigator (PI) is an exciting but also stressful and intimidating career transition step. While navigating this transition we quickly find out that the skills we have crafted throughout our scientific training do not necessarily cover those required to successfully run a research group. Although there is not a common path to ensure success for all new PIs, many of us encounter similar hurdles. The aim of this article is to reflect on my recent experience and mistakes 2 years after initiating this transition, in the hope of highlighting some key aspects that may be beneficial for future new PIs.

Abstract:Doing a postdoc' following a doctorate is becoming more and more common worldwide as the pre-tenure job market continues shrinking in relation to the number of PhD graduates. Yet, behind statistics and descriptions of collective experience, how individuals experience the postdoctoral period is largely unknown, especially how they use this phase as preparation for future employment. Drawing on longitudinal data, this paper provides a close look at how seven postdoctoral scholars in life sciences from two Canadian universities intentionally prepared for their desired careers through day-to-day activities. The participants' daily activities were situated in three ways: intellectual, networking and institutional. It was found that they were all agentive in preparing for the future; yet, agency was exercised differently due to different institutional and personal contexts. The personal was found to be a significant factor that influenced their career preparations and decisions. This study addresses the gap in the literature regarding postdoctoral experiences and enriches our understanding about postdoctoral experience and training.

Abstract:University-to-work transitions tend to be discussed in terms of skills, outcomes and the readiness of graduates for an increasingly insecure and flexible labour market. Such a focus on individual attributes and orientations depicts graduates as lonely and ostensibly rational figures; disembedded from their intimate networks and devoid of emotional context as they navigate their post-university pathways. This article aims to steer the debate in a new, fundamentally relational direction by exploring the role and significance of intimate kin and non-kin relationships for the ways graduates experience and make choices about employment and careers. Drawing on qualitative longitudinal research with women who graduated from universities in the UK between 2009 and 2011, the discussion highlights the value of an explicitly relational perspective for revealing the personal and emotional dimensions of the transition out of higher education. The article concludes that the process of securing work and committing to a career is embedded within the broader experiences of personal life, emotion and (im)mobility and, thus, raises important questions about the role and responsibility of universities at a time when employability metrics are read as a marker of teaching quality.

Abstract:There is a shortage of qualified people in the IT industry in the world. To address this shortage, transition programmes are being created that help people change to careers in IT. To provide useful programmes, we need to know if the current curriculum provides value to its graduates. Moreover, as the IT industry undergoes continuous change, we need to regularly review what the industry needs and update any existing programmes as appropriate. In this paper we present the results of a survey of graduates of one such programme, the PGCertInfoTech at University of Auckland, with the view to evaluating the currency of the existing programme and to gather data on which to base decisions on updating it. Our conclusion is that our programme is largely useful to graduates, but could be improved with the addition of material on continuous integration, and some adjustment to the time spent on testing, concurrency, and project management. Our results will be useful to any other institutions having, or considering to have, IT transition programmes.
