Abstract:The utilization of online digital technologies in higher education teaching and learning has gained impetus in the post-COVID-19 era. A number of higher educational institutions have invested in capacity-building programmes related to the utilization of online digital technologies for teaching and learning. However, the utilization of these technologies in doctoral supervision is hampered by challenges related to access to digital devices, internet connectivity and the general attitude among digital technology users. Furthermore, despite supervisors’ efforts to reinforce mentoring, the lack of in-person engagement between supervisors and students portends a greater challenge. Therefore, the study sought to determine the influence of doctoral students’ gender on their thesis progression, the relationship between the frequency of engaging supervisors and thesis progression, the preferred mode of supervisor engagement and the level of student utilization of digital technologies in their doctoral work. The study sampled 109 students from a population of 150 PhD students of the University of Nairobi. Data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews that were administered to doctoral students and their supervisors respectively. The results showed a weak negative correlation between student and supervisor engagement and their stage in theses writing. The study also established low utilization of digital technologies in doctoral thesis supervision. Nonetheless, the results showed that student-supervisor engagement has an impact on their progression and that a significant number of doctoral students were comfortable with engaging their supervisors through a combination of face-to-face/in-person and virtual/online sessions. The study recommends that universities should adopt a blended doctoral supervision model to leverage the strengths of both in-person and virtual student-supervisor engagement. Further, there is a need to train both students and supervisors in the use of digital tools to enhance their engagement

Abstract:This research used Novakian concept mapping and interview techniques to track changes in knowledge and understanding amongst students and their supervisors in the course of full-time research towards a laboratory science-based PhD. This detailed longitudinal case study analysis measures both cognitive change in the specific subjects that are the topic for research, and the understanding of the process of PhD level research and supervision. The data show the challenges for students and supervisors from different national, ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds and traditions with a focus on how this impacts the PhD research process and development. Working cross-culturally, and often in a setting different from either the student or the supervisor’s background and training, can lead to a lack of common language and understanding for the development of a pedagogically oriented supervisory relationship. Documenting change in knowledge and understanding among PhD students and their supervisors is key to surfacing what the joint processes of mutual democratic research and of supervision may entail. This study explores how one of these key processes is a student’s developing sense of belonging (or non-belonging). Specifically, this paper engages the concepts of belonging, and democratic education through mutual learning, to explore the practices of working across national, cultural, ethnic, and diverse academic backgrounds, for both supervisors and students. Doctoral study is understood as a situated context in which belonging also acts as a gateway for who can join the global scientific community.

However, transitioning innovations from pilot to mainstream is an ongoing challenge that has long plagued the education sector. Education is a complex system – a system of systems. Like all systems there is an inherent inertia or stability. Any change or impact on the system requires a strong catalyst. Over the past decades we have witnessed several catalysts that have had system wide impact. The advent of MOOCs, the global pandemic and most recently, generative artificial intelligence. Clearly, the scale of these noted catalysts vastly outweighs small organisational innovations, and therefore, the opportunities for change can also be considered vastly different. However, the processes for enacting change on a system remain similar. In this context, Mary Uhl-Bien (2021) argues for a model of complexity leadership, to promote organisational generative emergence. In Uhl-Bien’s terms you can only fight complexity with complexity. Much of the discussion to date surrounding ChatGPT has focused on its potential to transform assessment in education. However, this disruption elicits two reactions that reflect the complexity leadership approach posited by researchers such as Uhl-Bien (for an overview see Uhl-Bien and Arena, 2017). One approach has been to resist the disruption by attempting to maintain the status quo through blocking or banning use. The other approach is to invite play and interaction with the tool to understand the potential benefits and concerns for education practice. The uncharted territory that AI in education represents requires an innovative approach to navigate. We don't yet know how this will work, so innovation is key to advancing our understanding of how AI can best be used in education. In so doing, it is essential to work within the friction of disrupting stable education and organizational systems to move forward in advancing teaching and learning practice. Complexity leadership, as advocated by Uhl-Bien, offers a framework for dealing with the dynamic and unpredictable environment of higher education. Leaders must understand the complexity of the system in which they operate, which includes acknowledging the different stakeholders and their roles, as well as the various external and internal factors that may impact the organization. Complexity leadership recognizes that change cannot be controlled, but can be guided through engaging with stakeholders, encouraging experimentation, and creating a safe environment for failure. This “Trendsetter discussion” explores the role of generative AI on education calling for increased scholarship and innovation to bring research informed lens for integration into practice. The talk covers different models of innovation as well as the impact ChatGPT is beginning to play on how we rethink the role of teaching and the purpose of education. AI in education is not a new event. The large-scale media exposure of AI in education through tools such as GPT has brought about a significant public and professional awareness. Positive and negative. AI will be an increasingly significant disruptive force in education. The impact of ChatGPT on assessment is a glaring and obvious example of how AI will bring about change in the way we enact education. By adopting a complexity leadership approach, we can engage with this disruption, encourage experimentation, and create a safe space for failure. This can help us to better understand the potential benefits and concerns for education practice, while also fostering innovation in teaching and learning. Abstract:This paper explores how health professional education and scholarship is likely to evolve over the next 50 years. Recognising the ambitious nature of this goal, we have adopted an approach of “looking back to predict the future”, drawing on past trends and lessons learnt to offer some predictions and recommendations. In doing so, we are mindful that recent advances in technology, especially related to generative artificial intelligence (AI), have added a further layer of complexity. The rapid rate of maturation of these technologies and the accompanying array of AI-based software solutions suggest that the educational landscape is likely to change dramatically—and continuously—over the foreseeable future. Within this context, it may seem premature to predict the future or make recommendations. However, in this paper we argue that urgent action is needed by educators to engage with the evolving landscape and to proactively develop models to harness the full potential of emerging technologies. Six themes are addressed, including: 1) the evolving role of educators and education providers, 2) innovative educational models and ethical frameworks, 3) future-focused competencies, 4) authentic assessment, 5) interprofessional education and 6) educational scholarship. This paper proposes a set of recommendations with the intention of stimulating critical discourse that can potentially lead to ongoing exploration of relevant issues.

Abstract:The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) rapidly advanced at the beginning of the 21st century. Leaders within organisations need to adjust their visions, plans, organisational structures, and management with regard to the demands, challenges and opportunities of this development. This is in particular the case in higher educational institutions (HEIs), which have to adjust to the rapid changes and new demands of skills of university graduates. Leaders in HEIs must therefore be aware of the related challenges and opportunities and might have to adjust the learning and teaching environment, the skills development of students, graduates, and faculty, as well as the technological requirements to create advanced skill sets. This article is based on a qualitative research study which was conducted at a university in South Africa. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used to explore the views of higher-education leaders at the selected university. Data were analysed through thematic analysis. It was found that leaders in HEIs need to be aware of their leadership and preferences in times of transition toward a more technologised learning environment, as well as the needs, demands, challenges and opportunities of the new workplaces, and new skill sets needed in the 4IR. Abstract:Disciplines in Higher Education have their own interpretations of what is essential knowledge that influences what is taught, how teaching occurs, and the role of digital tools. Disciplinary culture is dynamic and evolving, informed by disciplinary research and technology improvement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, digital solutions enabled ongoing teaching when undergraduate courses could not be taught on campus, in lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories, or in the field. Using digital tools and changes in teaching practices has created a context where Higher Education teachers must consider how future learning and teaching should occur. To explore this, a cross-discipline team used appreciative inquiry framed in complexity theory to examine how teaching in undergraduate programmes is changing in the digital age and implications for Higher Education teachers. The research identifies how digital technologies influence undergraduate programmes in Applied Statistics, Computer Science, Critical Indigenous Studies, Geography, and Information Systems. Analysis of the case studies identified how disciplinary culture, context, and technology combine to influence pedagogical practice and digital capabilities needed to teach in undergraduate programmes. We conclude that Higher Education teachers require capability in appropriate pedagogical practice that aligns with disciplinary culture and the technologies available.
Building a relationship between international doctoral students and their thesis supervisors through an online community of practice

Abstract:This paper presents an extract from a systematic international literature review research work funded by Laureate Online Education and aimed at detecting best practice in online doctoral students’ supervision. It was carried between March and July 2013 out by the authors of the paper, who have been working as online tutor and thesis supervisors at the University of Liverpool in the Online Professional Doctorate of Education (EdD). Prof. Morag Gray is also the Thesis Supervisor Manager in the EdD and she has been working recently for the implementation of the Thesis stage of this same programme. The authors initially illustrated the meaning of supervision as mentoring since while doctoral advising is related to accomplishing doctoral requirements, mentoring refers to both career and psychosocial support to students (Lunsford, 2012). The paper focuses on the idea that student-supervisor relationship is pivotal in student’s success and progress in research and on the idea that the use of a community of practice among supervisors and students may help in sustaining doctoral distance students on their journey and to overcome their sense of loneliness while working online. Some information on the way how the systematic literature review has been carried out is given in the paper namely: the research main aims and objectives, the literature search strategy, the search term used in the work and so on. This work makes an attempt to create connections with the online environment and on how it might be possible to sustain and to enhance the supervisor-student relationship via the internet when doctoral students and supervisors coming from different parts of the world, and who have never met in person. Particularly Andrew (2012) proposed the use of an online community of practice and of regular e-meetings for supporting online students’ work and relationship, also among doctoral students themselves, whilst Rosset & Marino (2005) shared experience on e-coaching providing some interesting insights on the possible use of technology for distance communication purposes and related effects on the individual’s relationship. Abstract:With the application of big data in the information age, the popularization of artificial intelligence and the coming of the network society, the traditional university education model has been severely impacted and challenged. It is an inevitable trend for higher education to adapt to the new social development reality and make corresponding adjustment and reform. Traditional university education pays attention to the imparts of theoretical knowledge and the cultivation of practical ability, but in the information age, students can get rich information and knowledge through the Internet, thus weakening the monopoly of traditional education. In addition, the popularity of artificial intelligence technology also means that some traditional teaching activities can be replaced by automation and intelligence, and the value chain of traditional education has been reshaped. The rise of the network society has also posed new challenges to the traditional university education model. The network society is characterized by a high degree of information sharing and exchange, and students can access various online educational resources and learning opportunities through the network platform. Therefore, traditional university education needs to find a new positioning and role, pay more attention to cultivating innovative ability, practical ability and teamwork ability, and provide students with more competitive comprehensive ability. Faced with these challenges, higher education must make corresponding adjustments and changes. Abstract:Innovation in higher education management and leadership has experienced a continuous increase in demand, worldwide. The emergence of global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, has accelerated the adoption and implementation of this innovation. Furthermore, technological advancement can be attributed to changes in educational management and leadership. The use of business models, theories, and methods such as the Education Management Information System (EMIS) has improved the collection, analysis, interpretation, storage, and retrieval of data to increase how they make well-informed decisions. Therefore, the strategies employed in higher education management and leadership have undergone many changes and updates. However, further research is required to ensure that best practices, evidence, and data-driven methods are used to improve staff/follower satisfaction and high performance of students and teachers in higher education institutions. This study explores the impact of innovation on management and leadership in higher education institutions. Findings from several countries show a strong positive correlation between increase in innovation and better educational management and leadership. Additionally, openness to change and happiness of stakeholders in higher education institutions increases when leaders and educational management are trained through conferences and benchmarking activities. Hence, using emerging technology and openness to change through education, awareness creation, and training, the level of innovation in universities and other higher education institutions increases, which in turn promotes performance and productivity. Abstract:Education is recognised as a viable pathway to a better future. It is not a linear rite of passage but a meandering recognition of learning along the way. The advocacy of education for all, internationally, has led to education policy implementation across our global citizenship albeit at differing levels of accessibility and quality. It is widely recognised that the seminal work of Freire, Rousseau and Dewey have embedded the importance of active learning and critical pedagogy in our modern society. But have our leaders of education sufficiently recognised the need to promote education as a sustainable, complementary activity to social and caring aspects of our society. This paper focuses on strategies used to build a sense of community in a classroom of educationalists who through their own learning experiences gain empowerment. Drawing on 3 iterations of delivering a module in synchronous virtual classroom, the strategies adopted are outlined, the overall theme is to enable the building of trustworthy relationships and to teach educationalists to embed beliefs and values into their teaching practice. Aspects of the induction period are designed to foster resilience and wellbeing in the teacher cohort for digital and physical life so that students feel nurtured and gain confidence to grow and empower others within the learning lifecycle. Following on from the global pandemic, most formal education ecosystems had to temporarily pivot to digital education. Reflection and critical thinking beyond COVID position digital education at a juncture that needs careful consideration to understand the giant leap required to utilise advancements in technology in a classroom. This paper presents a pedagogical approach that tightly couples classroom dialogue with the application of existing technology for teaching and learning at level 9 (Masters) to surmount a sense of uncomfortableness encountered for teachers when faced with moving from a whole group, self-contained classroom approach to a multi-faceted learning ecosystem. Furthermore, the case studies described here address complexity in the classroom, acknowledging the ‘valley of death’ approach used in transitioning research into practice, and furthering our understanding how innovative technologies only make a difference when deployed and used in line with user needs and requirements (Maughan et. al, 2018). Students describe how they overcome fear from one’s own comfort zone toward recognising the power of teachers as change agents using an array of community communication platforms to equip and enhance their toolkit with engagement tools tailored for their subject expert domain needs. Technology is a critical enabler to access knowledge, resources and people and has empowered those unable to engage with traditional educational settings to gain formal and informal knowledge whilst making learning more fun and engaging alongside other life responsibilities. Education as a career has expanded, teachers, tutors, lecturers, instructional designers, social and community enterprises, data analysts, database architects, facilitators all contribute to a complex education ecosystems that aspire to equality, inclusion and diversity. The population in this study includes diverse educationalists contexts and demonstrates the use of ice-breakers (Eggleston and Smith, 2004). This paper details examples of community building over a number of semesters delivering the same module to different cohorts. It illuminates the difficult induction period whilst students gain trust within small groups and overcome challenges that are presented. The results identify mechanisms that foster a sense of urgency to advocate for change, overcome complacency in classroom and introduce experimentation as a lever to learning in a failsafe ecosystem. Fear is identified as a concept that prevents the use of some technology due to its unpredictability and teacher legacy for being the person at the top of the class with all the knowledge. Times have changed, creativity is key and teachers are realising that they must prepare their students for failure in addition to success and that they need to model experimentation and failure to demonstrate that recovery and problem based learning prevails in a knowledge economy. As educator's compliance is a critical factor to meet the quality standards of our trade, meeting learning outcomes is just one part of the learning journey, gaining trust, delivery of engaging content and the realisation that students need an education ecosystem that promotes a nurture environment, self-actualisation and phronesis.

Abstract:As higher education systems and institutions expand, more energy is being invested in ensuring that sufficient learning has been achieved to warrant the award of a qualification. Many commonly used assessment approaches do not scale well, and there remains a pressing need for reform. This paper distils insights from international investigations of student learning outcomes assessment, using this analysis to chart frontiers for innovation. This paper sets out principles for guiding change in this field, presents an evaluation of progress via a review of signature assessment initiatives, reviews likely facilitators and blockers and, through these analyses, derives a strategy for spurring development.
Innovations in teacher education at the time of COVID19: an Australian perspective

Abstract:The university sector was hit hard by COVID-19 in early 2020 with global calls for universities to lockdown. The teacher education sector in most countries, including Australia, had not anticipated the shift to off-campus teaching of such a massive scale and the sector was not well prepared for the challenge. This paper reports how the Australian education sector responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and details how one Australian university implemented a number of innovations changing the mode of teaching and move to a fully online environment for all initial teacher education programmes. The innovations included the conversion of all face to face course work units into online units, including synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities. The initial impact of the innovations on pre-service teachers was captured through systematic measures of engagement with the online content. Using these measures, we interviewed four academics who were identified as supporting high levels of interaction. We were keen to understand what contributed to fostering high levels of interaction of pre-service teachers. Key lessons learnt from the analysis are discussed with a hope that these practices might benefit others looking for ways to provide high-quality teacher education programmes during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:When new technologies arrive they come with promises to solve our problems. Technology has offered ways to get information faster, to communicate and collaborate synchronously, asynchronously. In our teaching we have crafted online learning modules to affords flexibility for students so that they can engage with our disciplines outside of the confines of physical classrooms. Smart phone technology allows us to ‘google’ information (and misinformation) from anywhere - provided you have a smart device, a WIFI connection and a service provider that covers your location. In short, technologies have allowed us to work faster, and facilitated the expansion of the digital asset realm, and they have served as catalysts for innovation and thinking differently about education. With the adoption of each technological implementation I ask both “what are the gains?” and “what are we losing?”. I offer my reflections on three technologies. Email: When I first started as an associate lecturer there was time to have a tea break in a tearoom. Email – now so ubiquitous - replaced the ‘memo’. Something that was implemented for efficient communication has become overtly time consuming and administratively burdensome. The need for rich free-flowing incidental conversation in academia remains but the spaces in time to have these conversations has vanished. On balance: initially a gain, more recently a loss. Internet: The WorldWide Web started to gained traction in higher education in the mid-late 1990s. Teaching became ‘blended’ as many of us starting to create digital learning resources for our students in ‘flexible’ learning environments. Hours were invested in converting analogue images and sound to digital assets. Analogue assessments were changed to fit the digital environment. Having students record their observations in scientific drawings was problematic. With Web 2.0 (~ 2000) came rise of Learning Management Systems and it became easier to create, deliver and manage online quizzes. Scrutinising how students interacted with online resources became popular. Twenty years on and I rely on the online environment to teach, however I still cling to face-to-face teaching as I crave the conversations I have in class. On balance: undecided. mApps: In 2012 I partnered with an undergraduate student and professional staff on a mApp – CampusFlora; we hit the AppStore in 2013 (Author et al., 2014). Designing an app in partnership with students (aligned with students-as-partners approach Healey et al., 2014) allowed us to become ‘collaborators’ rather thana ‘students’ and ‘staff’ (Author et al., 2019). Here, technology acted as a collaboration catalyst shifted from academic-led learning design to student-staff co-design. On balance: a gain. Developing digital literacy in our students is important - not just being able to use technology, but by contributing to resource creation. Co-creating with students is now where I like to spend my time.

Abstract:The 20th century digital revolution has already seen the introduction of faster, more diverse, easier to use technologies with extended capacity and capability that has enhanced productivity in Laboratory Medicine and allowed more effective use of human resource. With increasing demands for better health and best care the challenge to future healthcare systems is to deploy technology, facilities and human resources more effectively. For the 21st century the digital age heralds opportunities for information-led technology providers to become healthcare providers when algorithm driven care can support patients' needs at the point of care close to or in their homes. For Specialists in Laboratory Medicine the opportunity arises for working beyond the laboratory in partnership with the emerging providers. The challenge to specialists is to extend their skill and competence to leadership roles that (a) determine clinical need and strategic direction for local environments, (b) ensure technology solutions are cost-effective, safe and reliable, (c) assume the business acumen to market, negotiate and manage change in services, (d) expect understanding of the clinical bioinformatics that underpin genomics, health information science (data mining and health economics) and physical sciences (e) expect knowledge and skills in the provision of direct clinical care in the face of staffing shortfalls experienced by many healthcare systems and (f) enhance their communication and interactive skills. In growing their leadership contribution a partnership approach in education and training across healthcare divides, in conjunction with the diagnostics and/or information technology industries, through integrated professional organisation approaches, joint approaches with academia and policy related healthcare organisations is recommended.

Abstract:Due to the nature of most postgraduate theses in control engineering and their similarities to industrial and software engineering projects, invoking novel project control techniques could be effective. In recent decades, agile techniques have attracted popularity thanks to their attributes in delivering successful projects. Hence exploiting those methods in education and thesis supervision of engineering topics can facilitate the process. On the other hand, because of the limitations imposed by the CoVid19 pandemic, the integration of well-established online tools in collaborative education is noteworthy. This paper proposes an application of the agile project management method for the supervision of postgraduate students' theses in the general field of engineering. The study extends a Scrum technique combined with approved systems engineering and team working tools such as Jira Software, Microsoft Teams, and Git version control (Github website). A custom designed V-model to nail an outstanding thesis is presented. The overall blended method is beneficial to provide feedback and self-assessment aid for the students and the supervisors. Employing this technique has shown promising progress in easing the supervision of students whilst helping them to manage their projects.

Abstract:This paper provides insights into thesis supervisors' perceptions of the supervisory relationship and process in English-medium international master's degree programmes (IMDPs). It contributes to the field of supervisory pedagogy in a master's level education by examining how supervisors perceive their supervisory practices and what they consider to be the most important features for successful supervision. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with thesis supervisors employed in five different Finnish universities. Qualitative content analysis was conducted. The results revealed that most of the interviewees perceive supervision as an asymmetric relationship in the context of a teaching model similar to Dysthe's (<a href="#">2002</a> Dysthe, O. 2002. Abstract:Whilst online learning has gained rapid momentum, the development of online technology and practices that support the delivery of online courses with a large research component has been slow. In 2017, the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University, Australia, developed a potentially scalable and transferable online research portal. This is an all-in-one platform that is designed to facilitate and support online research and research supervision, for supervisors and students. The research portal has evolved to currently provide research and research supervision support to over 700 online psychology students at the university. This paper describes the development, implementation and impact of the research portal and presents data from a preliminary evaluation of its usability and user satisfaction. Both research students and supervisors from the fully online fourth-year Graduate Diploma of Psychology Advanced program at Monash University participated in a series of focus groups, individual usability testing sessions, and surveys, and reported favourably on the research portal’s research supervisor and supervisee user satisfaction and usability. Qualitative and quantitative feedback provided useful information supporting research portal improvement and expansion possibilities, allowing an increasingly valuable contribution to online research supervision, research and research teaching. Implications for practice or policy All research students will be able to complete their research-related professional training online. Research supervisors and students will be able to access a standardised best practice online research supervision and research tool across courses and topics. Course leaders will be able to expand online education with an online research supervision and research tool that supports all research programs. Universities will be able to provide a research learning pathway for all students.

Boundary crossings: innovating assessment practices in higher education

Abstract:Purpose Advancing assessment practices represents an underexplored yet integral dimension of further progress for the field of sustainability-related teaching and learning in higher education. This study aims to address this area by seeking to understand the barriers that program leaders and instructors face in advancing assessment practices to identify possible innovations. Design/methodology/approach A conceptual framework centered on boundaries and boundary crossings is used to conceptualize barriers and possibilities in innovating assessment practices. The study then examines how a boundary object, the deliberation of assessment practices among a sustainability education community of practice, can be leveraged to identify boundaries and boundary crossings. Through an exploratory action research approach, data were collected via workshops, interviews and a survey. These were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings Six themes were identified as key areas for barriers and possibilities for advancing assessment practices. These themes are: defining sustainability education, practice characteristics, interdisciplinary approaches, transdisciplinary strategies, meeting demands and facilitating innovations. For each theme, status quo practices and potential innovations are described as well as boundary-crossing strategies to enable advances in practice. Originality/value This study considers the conceptual, practical and logistical breakthroughs needed to advance assessment practices across course, program and institutional levels of sustainability-related teaching and learning in higher education. The insights from the study provide considerations for the design and implementation of assessment practices while also suggesting the value of participatory deliberative processes in shaping innovations in practice.
