Abstract:We review recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories in four dimensions, problems which are potentially important in our quest to go beyond the standard $SU(3)_{QCD} \times (SU(2) \times U(1))_{GWS}$ model of the fundamental interactions. The generalized symmetries and associated new 't Hooft anomaly-matching constraints allow us to exclude, in a wide class of chiral gauge theories, confining vacuum with full flavor symmetries supported by a set of color-singlet massless composite fermions. The color-flavor-locked dynamical Higgs phase, dynamical Abelianization or more general symmetry breaking phase, appear as plausible IR dynamics, depending on the massless matter fermions present. We revisit and discuss critically several well-known confinement criteria in the literature, for both chiral and vectorlike gauge theories, and propose tentative, new criteria for discriminating different phases. Finally, we review an idea which might sound rather surprising at first, but is indeed realized in some softly-broken supersymmetric theories, that confinement in QCD is a small deformation (in the IR end of the renormalization-group flow) of a strongly-coupled, nonlocal, nonAbelian conformal fixed point.

Abstract:The road towards unification of elementary interactions is thought to start on the solid ground of a universal local gauge principle. I discuss the different types of bosonic gauge symmetries in gravitational and nongravitational (standard model) interactions and their extensions both fermionic, bosonic and with respect to space-time dimensions. The apparently paradoxical size and nature of the cosmological constant is sketched, which at first sight does not readily yield a clue as to the envelopping symmetry structure of a unified theory. Nevertheless a tentative outlook is given encouraging to proceed on this road.

Abstract:We make connections between studies in the condensed matter literature on quantum phase transitions in square lattice antiferromagnets, and results in the particle theory literature on abelian supersymmetric gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions. In particular, we point out that supersymmetric U(1) gauge theories (with particle content similar, but not identical, to those of theories of doped antiferromagnets) provide rigorous examples of quantum phase transitions which do not obey the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm (often referred to as transitions realizing "deconfined criticality"). We also make connections between supersymmetric mirror symmetries and condensed matter particle-vortex dualities.

Abstract:The presence of fields at an intermediate scale between the Electroweak and the Grand Unification scale modifies the evolution of the gauge couplings and consequently the running of other parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, such as gauginos and scalar masses. The net effect is a modification of the low energy spectrum which affects both the collider phenomenology and the dark matter relic density.

Abstract:(GUTs), theories that unify weak , electromagnetic and strong interactions, seem to be another natural step towards the theory of everything (TOE) . The phenomenal successes of quantum electrodynamics (QED), of quantum electroweak dynamics (QEWD) and of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describing, respectively, electromagnetic , electroweak and strong interactions strongly indicate that gauge theories are the correct framework to describe elementary particles and their interactions . In particular, the outstanding achievement of the electroweak unification5 ·6 has raised great hopes for the next step-grand unification. While ordinary GUTs have been successful in certain areas, they seem to be plagued by insurmountable problems. The gauge hierarchy problem, how to separate the electroweak scale ( 100 GeV) from the GUT scale (10 15 GeV) , is the arch-problem .7 It is remarkable that a possible satisfactory solution to this problem is provided by supersymmetry (SUSY), which is needed for other reasons as well. 9 It seems almost unavoidable that if we want to have grand unification , we had better have supersymmetric GUTs, 111 which after all are most welcome since they eventually provide a real unification in two respects: (i) automatic unifications with gravity and

Abstract:Tremendous phenomenological success of the Standard Model (SM) suggests that its flavor structure and gauge interactions may not be arbitrary but should have a fundamental first-principle explanation. In this work, we explore how the basic distinctive properties of the SM dynamically emerge from a unified New Physics framework tying together both flavour physics and Grand Unified Theory (GUT) concepts. This framework is suggested by a novel anomaly-free supersymmetric chiral $\mathrm{E}_6 \times \mathrm{SU}_F(2) \times \mathrm{U}_F(1)$ GUT containing the SM. Among the most appealing emergent properties of this theory is the Higgs-matter unification with a highly-constrained massless chiral sector featuring two universal Yukawa couplings close to the GUT scale. At the electroweak scale, the minimal SM-like effective field theory limit of this GUT represents a specific flavored three-Higgs doublet model consistent with the observed large hierarchies in the quark mass spectra and mixing already at tree level.

Abstract:The survival principle is modified in a manner suggested by unified theories, which generally leave relic discrete symmetries, in addition to the SU(3) × SU(2) × U(1) gauge symmetry, unbroken down to low (⩽104 GeV) energies. Suitable discrete “mirror symmetries” of this type will make the existence of mirror fermions, required by several attractive theoretical speculations, consistent with phenomenology. We discuss phenomenological consequences of such schemes, paying special attention to the importance of apparent non-renormalizable interactions in the low energy effective theory. Unified theories based on SO(16) and SO(18) gauge groups provide examples; the latter appears particularly attractive.

Abstract:The presence of new matter fields charged under the Standard Model gauge group at intermediate scales below the Grand Unification scale modifies the renormalization group evolution of the gauge couplings. This can in turn significantly change the running of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters, in particular the gaugino and the scalar masses. In the absence of new large Yukawa couplings we can parameterise all the intermediate scale models in terms of only two parameters controlling the size of the unified gauge coupling. As a consequence of the modified running, the low energy spectrum can be strongly affected with interesting phenomenological consequences. In particular, we show that scalar over gaugino mass ratios tend to increase and the regions of the parameter space with neutralino Dark Matter compatible with cosmological observations get drastically modified. Moreover, we discuss some observables that can be used to test the intermediate scale physics at the LHC in a wide class of models.

Abstract:Forty-six years after the birth of supersymmetry in 1973 from works of Julius Wess and Bruno Zumino, the standard quantum-field-theorists and particle physicists' language ofsuperspaces',supersymmetry', andsupersymmetric action functionals in superspace formulation'as given in Chapters IV, V, VI, VII, XXII of the classic on supersymmetry and supergravity: Julius Wess & Jonathan Bagger: Supersymmetry and Supergravity (2nd ed.), is finally polished, with only minimal mathematical patches added for consistency and accuracy in dealing with nilpotent objects from the Grassmann algebra involved, to a precise setting in the language of complexified -graded -Algebraic Geometry. This is completed after the lesson learned from D (14.1)(arXiv: 1808.05011 [math. DG]) and the notion of, towered superspaces' as complexified -graded -schemes, their distinguished sectors, and purge-evaluation maps first developed in SUSY (1)(= D (14.1. Supp. 1))(arXiv: 1902.06246 [hep-th]) and further polished in the current work. While the construction depends on a choice of a trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections, as long as the transformation law and the induced isomorphism under a change of trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections are understood, any object or structure thus defined or constructed is mathematically well-defined. The construction can be generalized to all other space-time dimensions with simple or extended supersymmetries. This is part of the mathematical foundation required to study fermionic D-branes in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz formulation.

Abstract:We examine unification of gauge couplings in four dimensional renormalizable gauge theories inspired by the latticized (deconstructed) SM or MSSM in five dimensions. The models are based on replicated gauge groups, spontaneously broken to the diagonal subgroup. The analysis is performed at the one-loop level, with the contribution from the heavy vector bosons included, and compared with the analogous results in the SM or MSSM. Unification at the diagonal breaking scale is compared with the unification above that scale proposed by Arkani-Hamed, Cohen and Georgi. We find that in the considered class of extensions of the MSSM(SM) unification is possible for a wide range of unification scales and with a similar accuracy as in the MSSM(SM).

Abstract:These are expanded notes for a short series of lectures, presented at the University of Luxembourg in 2017, giving an introduction to some of the ideas of supersymmetry and supergeometry. In particular, we start from some motivating facts in physics, pass to the theory of supermanifolds, then to spinors, ending up at super-Minkowski space-times. We examine some salient mathematical issues with understanding supersymmetry in a classical setting and make no attempt to discuss phenomenologically interesting models. Moreover, the presentation is "light" in the sense that nothing is carefully proved. The audience of the seminars ranged from Ph.D. students to more experienced postdocs in mathematics. The audience was assumed to have a working knowledge of differential geometry, elementary category theory, and basic ideas from classical & quantum mechanics. No knowledge of supersymmetry and supergeometry is assumed.

Abstract:We show a natural form of the interaction between the unparticle and supersymmetry. Using the couplings of the unparticle to supersymmetry presented, as examples, we calculate the differential decay rates for the processes $\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{f}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}f+{\mathcal{U}}_{3/2}$, ${\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}+{\mathcal{U}}_{3/2}$, ${\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{W}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}+{\mathcal{U}}_{3/2}$ and ${\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{Z}^{0}+{\mathcal{U}}_{3/2}$. Finally, we discuss the phenomenological implication of our results and give some comments.
