Abstract:Supersymmetry is a theme with many facets that has dominated much of high energy physics over the past decades. In this contribution I present a very personal perspective on these developments, which has also been shaped in an important way by my interactions with Julius Wess and Bruno Zumino.

Supersymmetric Tools in Yang-Mills Theories at Strong Coupling: the Beginning of a Long Journey

Abstract:Development of holomorphy-based methods in super-Yang-Mills theories started in the early 1980s and lead to a number of breakthrough results. I review some results in which I participated. The discovery of Seiberg's duality and the Seiberg-Witten solution of ${\cal N}=2$ Yang-Mills were the milestones in the long journey of which, I assume, much will be said in other talks. I will focus on the discovery (2003) of non-Abelian vortex strings with various degree of supersymmetry, supported in some four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories and some intriguing implications of this discovery. One of the recent results is the observation of a soliton string in the bulk ${\cal N}=2$ theory with the $U(2)$ gauge group and four flavors, which can become critical in a certain limit. This is the case of a "reverse holography," with a very transparent physical meaning.

Abstract:These are expanded notes for a short series of lectures, presented at the University of Luxembourg in 2017, giving an introduction to some of the ideas of supersymmetry and supergeometry. In particular, we start from some motivating facts in physics, pass to the theory of supermanifolds, then to spinors, ending up at super-Minkowski space-times. We examine some salient mathematical issues with understanding supersymmetry in a classical setting and make no attempt to discuss phenomenologically interesting models. Moreover, the presentation is "light" in the sense that nothing is carefully proved. The audience of the seminars ranged from Ph.D. students to more experienced postdocs in mathematics. The audience was assumed to have a working knowledge of differential geometry, elementary category theory, and basic ideas from classical & quantum mechanics. No knowledge of supersymmetry and supergeometry is assumed.

Abstract:The question if conserved currents can be sensibly defined in supersymmetric minisuperspaces is investigated in this essay. The objective is to employ exclusively the differential equations obtained {\em directly} from the Lorentz and supersymmetry quantum constraints. The ``square-root'' structure of N=1 supergravity is the motivation to contemplate this tempting idea. However, it is shown that such prospect is not feasible but for some very simple scenarios. Otherwise, conserved currents (and consistent probability densities) can be derived from subsequent Wheeler-DeWitt like equations obtained from the supersymmetric algebra of constraints.

Unfolding Particle Physics Hierarchies with Supersymmetry and Extra Dimensions

Abstract:This is a written version of lectures delivered at TASI 2022 ``Ten Years After the Higgs Discovery: Particle Physics Now and Future''. Mechanisms and symmetries beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are presented capable of elegantly and robustly generating the striking hierarchies we observe in particle physics. They are shown to be among the central archetypes of quantum effective field theory and to strongly resonate with the tight structure and phenomenology of the Standard Model itself, allowing one to motivate, develop and test a worthy successor. The (Little) Hiearchy Problem is discussed within this context. The lectures culminate in specific BSM case-studies, gaugino-mediated (dynamical) supersymmetry breaking to generate the weak/Planck hierarchy, and (in less detail) extra-dimensional wavefunction overlaps to generate flavor hierarchies.

Abstract:A general, incomplete and partisan overview of various areas of the theoretical investigation is presented. Most of this activity stems from the search for physics beyond quantum field theory and general relativity, a titanic struggle that, in my opinion, empowered the symmetry principles to a dangerous level of speculation. In the works (that are my own) commented upon here the attempt has been to proceed by holding to certain epistemological pillars (usually absent from the too speculative theories) such as, e.g., four or less dimensions, proposals for experimental tests of radical ideas, wide cross-fertilization, etc.. As for the latter, the enterprise is undertaken within a theoretical perspective that pushes till condensed matter and even biology the cross-fertilization between ``branches of physics''.

Abstract:Recently it was observed by one of the authors that supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM) admits a formulation in terms of only one bosonic degree of freedom. Such a construction, called the minimally bosonized SUSYQM, appeared in the context of integrable systems and dynamical symmetries. We show that the minimally bosonized SUSYQM can be obtained from Witten's SUSYQM by applying to it a nonlocal unitary transformation with a subsequent reduction to one of the eigenspaces of the total reflection operator. The transformation depends on the parity operator, and the deformed Heisenberg algebra with reflection, intimately related to parabosons and parafermions, emerges here in a natural way. It is shown that the minimally bosonized SUSYQM can also be understood as supersymmetric two-fermion system. With this interpretation, the bosonization construction is generalized to the case of N=1 supersymmetry in 2 dimensions. The same special unitary transformation diagonalises the Hamiltonian operator of the 2D massive free Dirac theory. The resulting Hamiltonian is not a square root like in the Foldy-Wouthuysen case, but is linear in spatial derivative. Subsequent reduction to `up' or `down' field component gives rise to a linear differential equation with reflection whose `square' is the massive Klein-Gordon equation. In the massless limit this becomes the self-dual Weyl equation. The linear differential equation with reflection admits generalizations to higher dimensions and can be consistently coupled to gauge fields. The bosonized SUSYQM can also be generated applying the nonlocal unitary transformation to the Dirac field in the background of a nonlinear scalar field in a kink configuration.

Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI) of the University of Minnesota. Founders and trailblazers of supersymmetry descended on FTPI, as well as a large crowd of younger theorists deeply involved in research in this area. Since then 23 years have elapsed and significant changes happened in supersymmetry (SUSY). Its history definitely needs an update. Such an update is presented below. The Second Edition of the revised collection will be released in 2024.
