Abstract:In these lectures I review the progress made over the last few years in the subject of string and string-inspired phenomenology. I take a practical approach, thereby concentrating more on explicit examples rather than on formal developments. Topics covered include: introduction to string theory, the free-fermionic formulation and its general features, generic conformal field theory properties, $SU(5)\times U(1)$ GUT and string model-building, supersymmetry breaking, the bottom-up approach to string-inspired models, radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, the determination of the allowed parameter space of supergravity models and the experimental constraints on this class of models, and prospects for direct and indirect tests of string-inspired models. (Lectures delivered at the XXII ITEP International Winter School of Physics, Moscow, Russia, February 22 -- March 2, 1994)

Supersymmetric Tools in Yang-Mills Theories at Strong Coupling: the Beginning of a Long Journey

Abstract:Development of holomorphy-based methods in super-Yang-Mills theories started in the early 1980s and lead to a number of breakthrough results. I review some results in which I participated. The discovery of Seiberg's duality and the Seiberg-Witten solution of ${\cal N}=2$ Yang-Mills were the milestones in the long journey of which, I assume, much will be said in other talks. I will focus on the discovery (2003) of non-Abelian vortex strings with various degree of supersymmetry, supported in some four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories and some intriguing implications of this discovery. One of the recent results is the observation of a soliton string in the bulk ${\cal N}=2$ theory with the $U(2)$ gauge group and four flavors, which can become critical in a certain limit. This is the case of a "reverse holography," with a very transparent physical meaning.

Abstract:We consider two questions in string ``phenomenology.'' First, are there any generic string predictions? Second, are there any general lessons which string theory suggests for thinking about low energy models, particularly in the framework of supersymmetry? Among the topics we consider are the squark and slepton spectrum, flavor symmetries, discrete symmetries including $CP$, and Peccei-Quinn symmetries. We also note that in some cases, discrete symmetries can be used to constrain the form of supersymmetry breaking.

Abstract:These four lectures, addressed to an audience of graduate students in experimental high energy physics, survey some of the basic concepts in string theory. The purpose is to convey a general sense of what string theory is and what it has achieved. Since the characteristic scale of string theory is expected to be close to the Planck scale, the structure of strings probably cannot be probed directly in accelerator experiments. The most accessible experimental implication of superstring theory is supersymmetry at or below the TeV scale.

Abstract:This is a review of the new manifestly spacetime-supersymmetric description of the superstring. The new description contains N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry, and is related by a field redefinition to the standard RNS description. It is especially convenient for four-dimensional compactifications since SO(3,1) super-Poincar\'e invariance can be made manifest. Parts of this work have been done in collaboration with Warren Siegel and Cumrun Vafa. This review is based on lectures given at the VIII J.A. Swieca summer school and should be easily accesible to anyone familiar with the RNS superstring description.

Abstract:One of the main goals of the field of string phenomenology is to describe the properties of our spacetime in low-energy effective models related to and consistent with string theory. It is known that our universe undergoes accelerated expansion, which can be described in Einstein's theory of general relativity as a positive cosmological constant. Within string theory descriptions, this is realized by a scalar field with a positive value of its potential. Oftentimes, this is modeled by having the scalar at a stable, positive minimum. One then obtains a de Sitter spacetime. Constructions of de Sitter spaces from string theory are not straightforward and face many criticisms. In this thesis, we address several aspects related to this topic. We investigate the description of general branes in supergravity and in particular describe the uplifting anti-D3-brane of the KKLT model, including all world-volume fields. Additionally, we translate the type IIB based KKLT model into type IIA and introduce a mechanism that allows for the rapid construction of many de Sitter solutions. Related to this, we investigate models based on twisted 7-tori from M-theory and their relation to type II supergravity. These setups can also yield de Sitter solutions using the same mass production mechanism. One of the more recent and serious claims against the construction of de Sitter spaces in string theory, the de Sitter swampland conjecture, is also addressed here. We highlight the difficulty of obtaining a stable, positive vacuum energy in classical type IIA flux compactifications and their reliance on O-plane sources. Then, we turn our attention to the conjecture itself. Contrary to the initial claim, we find many unstable de Sitter points in numerical searches and go on to present our own refined conjecture that differs in several key aspects from the refined version of the original conjecture.

Abstract:The presence of fields at an intermediate scale between the Electroweak and the Grand Unification scale modifies the evolution of the gauge couplings and consequently the running of other parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, such as gauginos and scalar masses. The net effect is a modification of the low energy spectrum which affects both the collider phenomenology and the dark matter relic density.

Abstract:String theory has been initially derived from motivations coming from strong interaction phenomenology,but its application faced deep conceptual and practical difficulties. The strong interactions found their theoretical foundation elsewhere, namely on QCD, the quantum gauge field theory of quarks and gluons. Recently, the Gauge/Gravity correspondence allowed to initiate a reformulation of the connection between strings and gauge field theories, avoiding some of the initial drawbacks and opening the way to new insights on the gauge theory at strong coupling and eventually QCD. Among others, the recent applications of the Gauge/Gravity correspondence to the formation of the QGP, the quark-gluon plasma, in heavy-ion reactions seem to provide a physically interesting insight on phenomenological features of the reactions. In these lectures we will give a simplified introduction to those aspects of string theory which, at the origin and in the recent developments, are connected to strong interactions, for those students which are starting to learn QCD and QGP physics from an experimental or phenomenological point of view.

Abstract:To make progress in learning the underlying fundamental theory, it will be necessary to combine bottom-up phenomenology and top-down analysis -- in particular, top-down is unlikely to succeed alone. Here I elaborate on the role of both, and describe obstacles that need to be overcome to help data point toward the underlying theory, as well as approaches that might help to bypass full systematic treatments. I also summarize arguments that superpartners are probably being produced at the Tevatron Collider.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the effective field theory perspective on modern physics through the lens of the quantum theory of gravitational interaction. The historical part argues that the search for a theory of quantum gravity stimulated the change in outlook that characterizes the modern approach to the Standard Model of particle physics and General Relativity. We present some landmarks covering a long period, i.e., from the beginning of the 1930s until 1994, when, according to Steven Weinberg, the modern bottom-up approach to General Relativity began. Starting from the first attempt to apply the quantum field theory techniques to perturbatively quantize Einstein's theory, we explore its developments and interaction with the top-down approach encoded by String Theory. In the last part of the paper, we focus on this last approach to describe the relationship between our modern understanding of String Theory and Effective Field Theory in today's panorama. To this end, the non-historical part briefly explains the modern concepts of moduli stabilization and Swampland to understand another change in focus that explains the present framework where some string theorists move.

Abstract:The status of the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. We emphazize the fact that in spite of the success of the SM for the descrition of the fermionic sector, the status of the bosonic sector (gauge and scalar) suffers from many theoretical deficiencies and from the lack of empirical support. This situation, which leaves room for several types of extensions or alternatives to SM, strongly motivates the pursue of intense efforts for finding hints of New Physics (NP) effects. We present a phenomenological description valid for energies lying below the NP scale. We discuss the indirect constraints established from high precision tests at LEP1, as well as the direct tests that could be performed at future machines

Abstract:$^1S_0$ pairing in nuclear matter is investigated by taking the hadron mass decrease into account via the ``In-Medium Bonn potential'' which was recently proposed by Rapp et al. The resulting gap is significantly reduced in comparison with the one obtained with the original Bonn-B potential and we ascertain that the meson mass decrease is mainly responsible for this reduction.

Abstract:This paper summarizes several developments in string-derived (Minimal Supersymmetric) Standard Models. Part one reviews the first string model containing solely the three generations of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and a single pair of Higgs as the matter in the observable sector of the low energy effective field theory. This model was constructed by Cleaver, Faraggi, and Nanopoulos in the Z_2 x Z_2 free fermionic formulation of weak coupled heterotic strings. Part two examines a representative collection of string/brane-derived MSSMs that followed. These additional models were obtained from various construction methods, including weak coupled Z_6 heterotic orbifolds, strong coupled heterotic on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau's, Type IIB orientifolds with magnetic charged branes, and Type IIA orientifolds with intersecting branes (duals of the Type IIB). Abstract:These lectures provide an introduction to supersymmetry phenomenology. They include an overview of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The notion of soft breaking is explained, constraints on the standard soft breaking parameters are reviewed, and the standard ansatz of universal soft masses is discussed. The rest of the lectures are devoted to understanding supersymmetry breaking more microscopically. Models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking are reviewed, after which we turn to the question of the scale of supersymmetry breaking. Both intermediate and low scales and their phenomenology are considered. Finally, we consider applications to string theory. The emphasis, throughout, is on general issues rather then extensive detail, but it is hoped that the listeners/readers will be prepared after these lectures to delve into the details.
