Abstract:We show how starting with one-string space of states in BRST formalism one can construct a large class of physical quantities containing, in particular, scattering amplitudes for bosonic string and superstring. The same techniques work for heterotic string.

Abstract:In the present paper we consider quantum theories obtained by quantization of classical theories with first-class constraints assuming that these constraints form a Lie algebra. We show that in this case, one can construct physical quantities of a new type. We apply this construction to string theory. We find that scattering amplitudes in critical bosonic closed string theory can be expressed in terms of physical quantities of the new type. Our techniques can be applied also to superstring and heterotic string.

Abstract:These four lectures, addressed to an audience of graduate students in experimental high energy physics, survey some of the basic concepts in string theory. The purpose is to convey a general sense of what string theory is and what it has achieved. Since the characteristic scale of string theory is expected to be close to the Planck scale, the structure of strings probably cannot be probed directly in accelerator experiments. The most accessible experimental implication of superstring theory is supersymmetry at or below the TeV scale.

Abstract:We review a geometrical, so called superembedding, approach to the description of the dynamics of point-like and extended supersymmetric objects (superbranes) in String Theory. The approach is based on a supersymmetric extension of the classical surface theory to the description of superbrane dynamics by means of embedding worldvolume supersurfaces into target superspaces. Lorentz harmonics, twistors and pure spinors are its intrinsic ingredients. Main new results obtained with this approach include the following ones. Being manifestly doubly supersymmetric (on the worldvolume and in target superspace) the superembedding approach explained that the local fermionic kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz-like superbrane actions originates from the conventional local supersymmetry of the worldvolume. It established or clarified a classical relationship between various formulations of the dynamics of superparticles and superstrings, such as the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond and the Green-Schwarz formulation. The full set of the equations of motion of the M-theory five-brane was first derived with the use of this approach.

Abstract:Open superstring theory is formulated in terms of a nondegenerate supertranslation algebra. A supercharge for a tachyonic superstring can be also defined classically by taking into account the leakage of the supercurrent which is compensated by fermionic and bosonic auxiliary fields. The anticommutator of two supercharges of the tachyonic superstring does not contain the zero eigenvalue and so this string is not a BPS state. Brane-antibrane annihilation scenarios are described by these superalgebras defined on the sum of world-volumes of a D-brane, an anti-D-brane and a tachyonic superstring.

Abstract:We describe covariant derivatives with respect to the coordinates of the full superPoincaré group and dual coordinates, for Yang-Mills and supergravity. The derivatives have engineering dimension running from 0 to 2. Prepotentials appear as potentials for Lorentz derivatives (spin). Their role is clarified in a lightcone analysis, where they also act as compensating gauge parameters and Hertz potentials. Field strengths appear as potentials for dual-coordinate derivatives, until dimensional reduction. These generalizations extend the superstring's affine Lie algebra, and generalize gauge couplings for the superparticle.

Abstract:We review different exact approaches to string theory. In the context of the Green-Schwarz superstring, we discuss the action in curved backgrounds and its supercoset formulation, with particular attention to superstring backgrounds of the AdS3 type supported by both Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz fluxes. This is the basis for the discussion of classical integrability, of worldsheet-scattering factorisation in the uniform lightcone gauge, and eventually of the string spectrum through the mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, which for AdS3 backgrounds was only derived and analysed very recently. We then illustrate some aspects of the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz string, and introduce the formalism of Berkovits-Vafa-Witten, which has seen very recent applications to AdS3 physics, which we also briefly review. Finally, we present the relation between M-theory in the discrete lightcone quantisation and decoupling limits of string theory that exhibit non-relativistic behaviours, highlighting the connection with integrable T-Tbar deformations, as well as the relation between spin-matrix theory and Landau-Lifshitz models. This review is based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School and Workshop 2022 "Taming the string worldsheet" at NORDITA, Stockholm.

Exploring transcendentality in superstring amplitudes

Abstract:It is well known that the low energy expansion of tree-level superstring scattering amplitudes satisfies a suitably defined version of uniform transcendentality. In this paper it is argued that there is a natural extension of this definition that applies to the genus-one four-graviton Type II superstring amplitude to all orders in the low-energy expansion. To obtain this result, the integral over the genus-one moduli space is partitioned into a region $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ R surrounding the cusp and its complement $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ L , and an exact expression is obtained for the contribution to the amplitude from $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ R . The low-energy expansion of the $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ R contribution is proven to be free of irreducible multiple zeta-values to all orders. The contribution to the amplitude from $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ L is computed in terms of modular graph functions up to order D 12 $ \mathrm{\mathcal{R}} $ 4 in the low-energy expansion, and general arguments are used beyond this order to conjecture the transcendentality properties of the $ \mathrm{\mathcal{M}} $ L contributions. Uniform transcendentality of the full amplitude holds provided we assign a non-zero weight to certain harmonic sum functions, an assumption which is familiar from transcendentality assignments in quantum field theory amplitudes.

Lorentz-Covariant Green-Schwarz Superstring Amplitudes

Abstract:In a recent paper, the BRST formalism for the gauge-fixed N=2 twistor-string was used to calculate Green-Schwarz supersring scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of loops and external massless states. Although the gauge-fixing procedure preserved the worldsheet N=2 superconformal invariance of the twistor-string, it broke the target-space SO(9,1) super-Poincaré invariance down to an SU(4)xU(1) subgroup. In this paper, generators for the SO(9,1) super-Poincaré transformations, as well as manifestly covariant vertex operators, are explicitly constructed out of the gauge-fixed matter fields. The earlier calculated amplitudes are then expressed in manifestly Lorentz-covariant notation.

Abstract:In {\em Phys.\ Lett.} {\bf B 660}, 583 (2008), it was proposed that the D-brane geometry could be produced by open string quantum effects. In an effort to verify the proposal, we consider scattering amplitudes involving {\em massive} open superstrings. The main goal of this paper is to set the ground for two-loop "renormalization" of an oriented open superstring on a D-brane and to strengthen our skill in the pure spinor formulation of a superstring, an effective tool for multi-loop string diagrams. We start by reviewing scattering amplitudes of massless states in the 2D component method of the NSR formulation. A few examples of massive string scattering are worked out. The NSR results are then reproduced in the pure spinor formulation. We compute the amplitudes using the massive vertex operator constructed by Berkovits and Chandia in {\em JHEP} {\bf 0208}, 040 (2002). We point out that it may be possible to discover new Riemann type identities involving Jacobi $\vartheta$-functions by comparing a NSR computation and the corresponding pure spinor computation.

String Field Theory: A Review

Abstract:As of today there exist consistent, gauge-invariant string field theories describing all string theories: bosonic open and closed strings, open superstrings, heterotic strings and type II strings. The construction of these theories require algebraic ingredients, such as $A_\infty$ and $L_\infty$ homotopy algebras, geometric ingredients, relevant to the building of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and the distribution of picture changing operators, and field-theoretic ingredients, involving two-dimensional CFT's and BCFT's and Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization. Applications of string field theory include the description of non-perturbative phenomena such as tachyon condensation and classical solutions, and the resolution of a number of ambiguities that bedevil the world-sheet formulation of perturbative string theory. It also allows, given a proper definition of contours of integration for momenta, for a proof of unitarity and a clear understanding of the ultraviolet finiteness of the theory. In this article we review these developments.

On the deep superstring spectrum

Abstract:We propose a covariant method of constructing entire trajectories of physical states in superstring theory in the critical dimension. It is inspired by a recently developed covariant technology of excavating bosonic string trajectories, that is facilitated by the observation that the Virasoro constraints can be written as linear combinations of lowering operators of a bigger algebra, namely a symplectic algebra, which is Howe dual to the spacetime Lorentz algebra. For superstrings, it is the orthosymplectic algebra that appears instead, with its lowest weight states forming the simplest class of physical trajectories in the NS sector. To construct the simplest class in the R sector, the lowest weight states need to be supplemented with other states, which we determine. Deeper trajectories are then constructed by acting with suitable combinations of the raising operators of the orthosymplectic algebra, which we illustrate with several examples.

String no-scale supergravity

Abstract:We explore the postulates of string no-scale supergravity in the context of free-fermionic string models. The requirements of vanishing vacuum energy, flat directions of the scalar potential, and stable no-scale mechanism impose strong restrictions on possible string no-scale models, which must possess only two or three moduli, and a constrained massless spectrum. The soft-supersymmetry-breaking parameters involving all twisted and untwisted fields are given explicitly. This class of models contain no free parameters, \ie, in principle all supersymmetric particle masses and interactions are completely determined. A computerized search for free-fermionic models with the desired properties yields a candidate $SU(5)\times U(1)$ model containing extra (\r{10},\rb{10}) matter representations that allow gauge coupling unification at the string scale. Our candidate model possesses a bening non-universal assignment of supersymmetry breaking scalar masses, which may have interesting low-energy experimental consequences.

Abstract:We review recent developments in the construction of heterotic and type II string field theories and their various applications. These include systematic procedures for determining the shifts in the vacuum expectation values of fields under quantum corrections, computing renormalized masses and S-matrix of the theory around the shifted vacuum and a proof of unitarity of the S-matrix. The S-matrix computed this way is free from all divergences when there are more than 4 noncompact space–time dimensions, but suffers from the usual infrared divergences when the number of noncompact space–time dimensions is 4 or less.

Abstract:This is a review of the new manifestly spacetime-supersymmetric description of the superstring. The new description contains N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry, and is related by a field redefinition to the standard RNS description. It is especially convenient for four-dimensional compactifications since SO(3,1) super-Poincar\'e invariance can be made manifest. Parts of this work have been done in collaboration with Warren Siegel and Cumrun Vafa. This review is based on lectures given at the VIII J.A. Swieca summer school and should be easily accesible to anyone familiar with the RNS superstring description.
On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Spacetime aspects of non-supersymmetric strings

Abstract:The consistency of string theory as a theory of gravity does not rely on the presence of spacetime supersymmetry; however, its absence leads to the emergence of tadpole diagrams in the on-shell worldsheet formulation, thus undermining our control over the physics. Two-dimensional conformal invariance, a pillar of string theory, requires tadpole subtraction through the Fischler-Susskind mechanism, whose spacetime consequence is the emergence of scalar tadpole potentials. In this thesis, I explore several implications of the absence of supersymmetry in string-derived scenarios. I focus on the three ten-dimensional tachyon-free string theories in which spacetime supersymmetry is absent or broken, studying the gravitational consequences of tadpole potentials. First, I address vacuum solutions in terms of singular codimension-one vacua, explore their generalizations, and discuss the properties of their singular boundaries. I present an alternative perspective on these vacua based on the formalism of fake supersymmetry, in which the second-order equations of motion are replaced by supersymmetry-like first-order equations. I then turn to the topic of engineering vacua in the non-supersymmetric string models by constructing solutions that are supported by electric and magnetic fluxes and by providing evidence for their instability. Finally, I investigate brane-like solutions in the presence of tadpole potentials that yield both flux vacua with the isometries of supersymmetric branes and gravitational profiles that capture the backreaction of localized sources.

Abstract:This paper summarizes several developments in string-derived (Minimal Supersymmetric) Standard Models. Part one reviews the first string model containing solely the three generations of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and a single pair of Higgs as the matter in the observable sector of the low energy effective field theory. This model was constructed by Cleaver, Faraggi, and Nanopoulos in the Z_2 x Z_2 free fermionic formulation of weak coupled heterotic strings. Part two examines a representative collection of string/brane-derived MSSMs that followed. These additional models were obtained from various construction methods, including weak coupled Z_6 heterotic orbifolds, strong coupled heterotic on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau's, Type IIB orientifolds with magnetic charged branes, and Type IIA orientifolds with intersecting branes (duals of the Type IIB).
