Abstract:The consistency of string theory as a theory of gravity does not rely on the presence of spacetime supersymmetry; however, its absence leads to the emergence of tadpole diagrams in the on-shell worldsheet formulation, thus undermining our control over the physics. Two-dimensional conformal invariance, a pillar of string theory, requires tadpole subtraction through the Fischler-Susskind mechanism, whose spacetime consequence is the emergence of scalar tadpole potentials. In this thesis, I explore several implications of the absence of supersymmetry in string-derived scenarios. I focus on the three ten-dimensional tachyon-free string theories in which spacetime supersymmetry is absent or broken, studying the gravitational consequences of tadpole potentials. First, I address vacuum solutions in terms of singular codimension-one vacua, explore their generalizations, and discuss the properties of their singular boundaries. I present an alternative perspective on these vacua based on the formalism of fake supersymmetry, in which the second-order equations of motion are replaced by supersymmetry-like first-order equations. I then turn to the topic of engineering vacua in the non-supersymmetric string models by constructing solutions that are supported by electric and magnetic fluxes and by providing evidence for their instability. Finally, I investigate brane-like solutions in the presence of tadpole potentials that yield both flux vacua with the isometries of supersymmetric branes and gravitational profiles that capture the backreaction of localized sources.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to understand and handle the physical consequences arising from the lack of spacetime supersymmetry in non - supersymmetric string theory. Specifically, the author explores how to understand gravitational effects by studying vacuum solutions, constructing vacuums in non - supersymmetric string models, and exploring brane - like solutions in the context of non - supersymmetric string theory. ### Core Problems of the Paper 1. **Consistency of Non - Supersymmetric String Theory**: - The author points out that although the consistency of string theory as a theory of gravity does not depend on the existence of spacetime supersymmetry, its absence will lead to tadpole diagrams on the world sheet, thereby weakening our control over physical phenomena. - To maintain two - dimensional conformal invariance, tadpoles need to be removed through the Fischler - Susskind mechanism, which manifests as the appearance of scalar tadpole potential in spacetime. 2. **Study of Vacuum Solutions**: - The author studies the properties of vacuum solutions in ten - dimensional non - supersymmetric string theory without tachyon, especially the singular codimension - one vacuum solutions and their boundary properties. - A new perspective based on pseudo - supersymmetric formalism is proposed, replacing the second - order equations of motion with first - order equations similar to supersymmetric ones. 3. **Vacuum Engineering in Non - Supersymmetric String Models**: - By constructing solutions supported by charges and magnetic fluxes, the instabilities of these vacuums are explored. - The properties of brane - like solutions in the presence of tadpole potential are studied, including flux vacuums with supersymmetric brane isometries and gravitational profiles describing the back - reaction of local sources. ### Formula Examples - **Fischler - Susskind Mechanism**: \[ \text{Scalar Tadpole Potential} = V(\phi)=\sum_{i} c_{i} \phi_{i}^{2} \] where \( c_{i} \) are constants and \( \phi_{i} \) are scalar fields. - **One - loop Vacuum Amplitude**: \[ \Gamma =-\frac{T}{2}(4\pi^{2}\alpha')^{D / 2}\int_{F}d^{2}\tau\frac{\tau_{2}^{1 - D / 2}}{2}\text{Tr}\left(q^{L_{0}-c / 24}\bar{q}^{\bar{L}_{0}-\bar{c} / 24}\right) \] where \( T \) is the time period, \( \alpha' \) is the string length parameter, \( \tau \) is the modular parameter of the torus, \( q = e^{2\pi i\tau} \), \( L_{0} \) and \( \bar{L}_{0} \) are Virasoro operators, and \( c \) and \( \bar{c} \) are central charges. - **Dirac Determinant**: \[ \text{det}(\alpha,\beta)=\frac{\theta\left[\begin{array}{c}\alpha\\\beta\end{array}\right](0|\tau)}{\eta(\tau)} \] where \( \theta\left[\begin{array}{c}\alpha\\\beta\end{array}\right](z|\tau) \) is the Jacobi theta function with eigenvalues and \( \eta(\tau) \) is the Dedekind eta function. ### Summary This paper aims to fill the gaps in our understanding of non - supersymmetric gravity theories by in - depth study of vacuum solutions, flux vacuums, and physical effects supporting brane - like solutions in non - supersymmetric string theory. The methods and results proposed by the author not only help to understand the basic properties of non - supersymmetric string theory, but also provide new perspectives and tools for future research.
