Abstract:We describe the classical mechanics of the superstring in both hamiltonian and lagrangian formulations, including massless external fields. The formulation is a modification of that of Green and Schwarz that allows supersymmetric Lorentz covariant quantization.

Abstract:The formulation of classical mechanics applicable to fermionic degrees of freedom is presented in mathematically rigorous terms, including a description of how the mathematical structure relates to the quantization of the theory. Canonical transformations and the algebra of observables are defined and studied. A formula is given for the analog of the Poisson bracket. The quantization of the theory proceeds according to deformation quantization.

Abstract:We study the classical and quantum "properties" of Galilean fermions in 3+1 dimensions. We have taken the case of massless Galilean fermions minimally coupled to the scalar field. At the classical level, the Lagrangian is obtained by null reducing the relativistic theory in one higher dimension. The resulting theory is found to be invariant under infinite Galilean conformal symmetries. Using Noether's procedure, we construct the corresponding infinite conserved charges. Path integral techniques are then employed to probe the quantum "properties" of the theory. The theory is found to be renormalizable. A novel feature of the theory is the emergence of mass scale at the first order of quantum correction. The conformal symmetry of the theory breaks at the quantum level. We confirm this by constructing the beta function of the theory.

Abstract:In contrast with QFT, classical field theory can be formulated in strict mathematical terms of fibre bundles, graded manifolds and jet manifolds. Second Noether theorems provide BRST extension of this classical field theory by means of ghosts and antifields for the purpose of its quantization.

Abstract:In this and companion papers, we show that quantum field theories with gauge symmetries permit a broader class of classical dynamics than typically assumed. In this article, we show that the quantization of electromagnetism permits the existence of classical electric field states that do not obey Gauss's law. These states are gauge invariant and their time evolution can be consistently described using the Schrödinger equation. The time evolution of these states is such that at the classical level, the full set of Maxwell's equations would appear to hold, with the physical effects of these states being attributable to an auxiliary, static ``shadow'' charge density with no internal degrees of freedom. This density could affect the dynamics of charged particles in our universe and it may thus be of observational interest.

A Catalog of Digital Images of 113 Nearby Galaxies

Abstract:We present a digital catalog of images of 113 galaxies in this paper. These galaxies are all nearby, bright, large and well resolved. All images were recorded with charge coupled devices (CCDs) at the Palomar Observatory with the 1.5 meter telescope and at the Lowell Observatory with the 1.1 meter telescope. At Palomar we used the Thuan--Gunn g, r and i photometric bands to take 3 images each of 31 spiral galaxies; at Lowell we used the B_J and R bands (2 images per galaxy) of the photometric system by Gullixson et al. (1995) to observe 82 spirals and ellipticals. The galaxies were selected to span the Hubble classification classes. All data are photometrically calibrated with foreground stars removed. Important data on these galaxies published in the "Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies" (RC3) are recorded in the FITS file headers. All files are available through anonymous FTP from <a class="link-external link-ftp" href="ftp://astro.princeton.edu/" rel="external noopener nofollow">this ftp URL</a>, through WWW at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://astro.princeton.edu/~frei/galaxy_catalog.html" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, and Princeton University Press will soon publish the data on CD-ROM.

Classical Mechanics in Noncommutative Spaces: Confinement and More

Abstract:We consider a semi-classical approximation to the dynamics of a point particle in a noncommutative space. In this approximation, the noncommutativity of space coordinates is described by a Poisson bracket. For linear Poisson brackets, the corresponding phase space is given by the cotangent bundle of a Lie group, with the Lie group playing the role of a curved momentum space. We show that the curvature of the momentum space may lead to rather unexpected physical phenomena such as an upper bound on the velocity of a free nonrelativistic particle, bounded motion for repulsive central force, and no-fall-into-the-centre for attractive Coulomb potential. We also consider a superintegrable Hamiltonian for the Kepler problem in $3$-space with $su(2)$ noncommutativity. The leading correction to the equations of motion due to noncommutativity is shown to be described by an effective monopole potential.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss how the gauge principle can be applied to classical-mechanics models with finite degrees of freedom. The local invariance of a model is understood as its invariance under the action of a matrix Lie group of transformations parameterized by arbitrary functions. It is formally presented how this property can be introduced in such systems, followed by modern applications. Furthermore, Lagrangians describing classical-mechanics systems with local invariance are separated in equivalence classes according to their local structures.

Abstract:In the present paper we consider quantum theories obtained by quantization of classical theories with first-class constraints assuming that these constraints form a Lie algebra. We show that in this case, one can construct physical quantities of a new type. We apply this construction to string theory. We find that scattering amplitudes in critical bosonic closed string theory can be expressed in terms of physical quantities of the new type. Our techniques can be applied also to superstring and heterotic string.

Abstract:We study the classical mechanics and dynamics of particles that retains some memory of quantum statistics. Our work builds on earlier work on the statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of such particles. Starting from the effective classical manifold associated with two-particle bosonic and fermionic coherent states, we show how their exchange statistics is reflected in the symplectic form of the manifold. We demonstrate the classical analogues of exclusion or bunching behavior expected in such states by studying their trajectories in various quadratic potentials. Our examples are two-particle coherent states in one dimension and two-particle vortex motion in the lowest Landau level. We finally compare and contrast our results with previous simulations of the full quantum system, and with existing results on the geometric interpretations of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We describe covariant derivatives with respect to the coordinates of the full superPoincaré group and dual coordinates, for Yang-Mills and supergravity. The derivatives have engineering dimension running from 0 to 2. Prepotentials appear as potentials for Lorentz derivatives (spin). Their role is clarified in a lightcone analysis, where they also act as compensating gauge parameters and Hertz potentials. Field strengths appear as potentials for dual-coordinate derivatives, until dimensional reduction. These generalizations extend the superstring's affine Lie algebra, and generalize gauge couplings for the superparticle.

Abstract:We construct Lorentz invariant and gauge invariant 1PI effective action for closed and open superstrings and demonstrate that it satisfies the classical BV master equation. We also construct the quantum master action for this theory satisfying the quantum BV master equation and generalize the construction to unoriented theories. The extra free field needed for the construction of closed superstring field theory plays a crucial role in coupling the closed strings to D-branes and orientifold planes.

Symmetries in the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory

Abstract:In the context of the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory, a widely acknowledged issue is the inability of the first-class constraints to accurately reproduce the Lagrangian symmetry transformations. We take a critical look at the Hamiltonian formulation of the Polyakov string and demonstrate, using Castellani's procedure, that diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries naturally emerge without using any field-dependent reparametrization, thus preserving the theoretical consistency between Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions. Additionally, we will review the standard Hamiltonian analysis of the symmetries in terms of lapse and shift functions and show that the reason behind this failure is not due to the non-canonicity of the variables but rather because this parametrization fails to preserve general covariance.

Abstract:Two different forms of d-dimensional supersymmetric quantum mechanics are constructed from 1-dimensional one by means of two complex Clifford algebras C(d,0) and C(0,d) respectively. The two new d-dimensional realizations are based upon the more general supercharges, which include not only a vector superpotential but also a complex scalar superpotential, and bring out the richer structures.
Galilean Relativity and the Path Integral Formalism in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Closed systems in Newtonian mechanics obey the principle of Galilean relativity. However, the usual Lagrangian for Newtonian mechanics, formed from the difference of kinetic and potential energies, is not invariant under the full group of Galilean transformations. In quantum mechanics Galilean boosts require a non-trivial transformation rule for the wave function and a concomitant "projective representation" of the Galilean symmetry group. Using Feynman's path integral formalism this latter result can be shown to be equivalent to the non-invariance of the Lagrangian. Thus, using path integral methods, the representation of certain symmetry groups in quantum mechanics can be simply understood in terms of the transformation properties of the classical Lagrangian and conversely. The main results reported here should be accessible to students and teachers of physics -- particularly classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and mathematical physics -- at the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate levels, providing a useful exposition for those wanting to explore topics such as the path integral formalism for quantum mechanics, relativity principles, Lagrangian mechanics, and representations of symmetries in classical and quantum mechanics.

Classical and quantum gravity from relativistic quantum mechanics

Abstract:It is common practice to describe elementary particles by irreducible unitary representations of the Poincaré group. In the same way, multi-particle systems can be described by irreducible unitary representations of the Poincaré group. Representations of the Poincaré group are characterised by fixed eigenvalues of two Casimir operators corresponding to a fixed mass and a fixed angular momentum. In multi-particle systems (of massive spinless particles), fixing these eigenvalues leads to correlations between the particles. In the quasi-classical approximation of large quantum numbers, these correlations take on the structure of a gravitational interaction described by the field equations of conformal gravity. A theoretical value of the corresponding gravitational constant is calculated. It agrees with the empirical value used in the field equations of general relativity.

Abstract:The exploration of scalar field theories that exhibit Carroll and Galilei symmetries has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we generalize these studies to fermionic field theories and construct consistent electric and magnetic descriptions of Carrollian and Galilean spin $\tfrac{1}{2}$ fermions. We showcase various methods that offer complementary perspectives into the limiting process of the underlying relativistic theories. Moreover, we extend our study to $\mathcal{N}=1$ off-shell supersymmetric field theories in four dimensions. By introducing suitable Grassmann-analyticity conditions, we formulate the corresponding super-Carrollian and super-Galilean theories. These theories combine the established Carroll/Galilei scalars with the Carroll/Galilei fermions and a range of auxiliary fields into supermultiplets.

Abstract:A new form of quasiclassical space-time dynamics for constrained systems reveals how quantum effects can be derived systematically from canonical quantization of gravitational systems. These quasiclassical methods lead to additional fields, representing quantum fluctuations and higher moments, that are coupled to the classical metric components. The new fields describe non-adiabatic quantum dynamics and can be interpreted as implicit formulations of non-local quantum corrections in a field theory. This field-theory aspect is studied here for the first time, applied to a gravitational system for which a tractable model is constructed. Static solutions for the relevant fields can be obtained in almost closed form. They reveal new properties of potential near-horizon and asymptotic effects in canonical quantum gravity and demonstrate the overall consistency of the formalism.
