Abstract:In contrast with QFT, classical field theory can be formulated in strict mathematical terms of fibre bundles, graded manifolds and jet manifolds. Second Noether theorems provide BRST extension of this classical field theory by means of ghosts and antifields for the purpose of its quantization.

Abstract: These lectures are an introduction to formal semiclassical quantization of classical field theory. First we develop the Hamiltonian formalism for classical field theories on space time with boundary. It does not have to be a cylinder as in the usual Hamiltonian framework. Then we outline formal semiclassical quantization in the finite dimensional case. Towards the end we give an example of such a quantization in the case of Abelian Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract: This note gives an introduction to Lagrangian field theories in the presence of boundaries. After an overview of the classical aspects, the cohomological formalisms to resolve singularities in the bulk and in the boundary theories (the BV and the BFV formalisms, respectively) are recalled. One of the goals here (and in [arXiv:1201.0290]) is to show how the latter two formalisms can be put together in a consistent way, also in view of perturbative quantization.

Field Theory via Higher Geometry I: Smooth Sets of Fields

Abstract:The physical world is fundamentally: (1) field-theoretic, (2) smooth, (3) local, (4) gauged, (5) containing fermions, and last but not least: (6) non-perturbative. Tautologous as this may sound, it is remarkable that the mathematical notion of geometry which reflects all of these aspects -- namely, as we will explain: "supergeometric homotopy theory" -- has received little attention even by mathematicians and remains unknown to most physicists. Elaborate algebraic machinery is known for perturbative field theories, but in order to tackle the deep open questions of the subject, these will need to be lifted to a global geometry of physics. Our aim in this series is, first, to introduce inclined physicists to this theory, second to fill mathematical gaps in the existing literature, and finally to rigorously develop the full power of supergeometric homotopy theory and apply it to the analysis of fermionic (not necessarily super-symmetric) field theories. To warm up, in this first part we explain how classical bosonic Lagrangian field theory (variational Euler-Lagrange theory) finds a natural home in the "topos of smooth sets", thereby neatly setting the scene for the higher supergeometry discussed in later parts of the series. This introductory material will be largely known to a few experts but has never been comprehensively laid out before. A key technical point we make is to regard jet bundle geometry systematically in smooth sets instead of just its subcategories of diffeological spaces or even Fréchet manifolds -- or worse simply as a formal object. Besides being more transparent and powerful, it is only on this backdrop that a reasonable supergeometric jet geometry exists, needed for satisfactory discussion of any field theory with fermions.

Abstract:In the first part of this thesis we study the generalization of the recent algebraic approach to classical field theory by proposing a more general setting based on the manifold of smooth sections of a non-trivial fiber bundle. Central is the notion of observables/functionals over such sections, \textit{i.e.} appropriate smooth functions on them. The kinematic will be further specified by means of Peierls brackets, which in turn are defined via the causal propagators of linearized field equations. In the second part we implement deformation quantization of the algebras obtained above in the simpler setting of scalar field theory. Wick powers and time ordered products for quantum field theories in curved spacetimes are defined by giving a set of axioms which, when implemented, defines uniquely, up to some classifiable ambiguities, the aforementioned quantities. Those ambiguities are known to be tightly restrained by locality, covariance and other regularity conditions. One of the additional constraints used was to require continuous and analytic dependence on the metric and coupling parameters. It was recently shown that this rather strong requirement could be weakened, in the case of Wick powers, to the so-called parametrized microlocal spectrum condition. We therefore show the existence of Wick powers satisfying the above condition and extend this axiom to time ordered products, while reestablishing the usual uniqueness and existence results in light of the new constraint.

Abstract:We develop a general framework for quantum field theory on noncommutative spaces, i.e., spaces with quantum group symmetry. We use the path integral approach to obtain expressions for $n$-point functions. Perturbation theory leads us to generalised Feynman diagrams which are braided, i.e., they have non-trivial over- and under-crossings. We demonstrate the power of our approach by applying it to $\phi^4$-theory on the quantum 2-sphere. We find that the basic divergent diagram of the theory is regularised.

Abstract:Group field theory is a background-independent approach to quantum gravity whose starting point is the definition of a quantum field theory on an auxiliary group manifold (not interpreted as spacetime). Group field theory models can be seen as an extension of matrix and tensor models by additional data, and are traditionally defined through a functional integral whose perturbative expansion generates a sum over discrete geometries. More recently, some efforts have been directed towards formulations of group field theory based on a Hilbert space and operators, in particular in applications to cosmology. This is an attempt to review some of these formulations and their main ideas, to disentangle these constructions as much as possible from applications and phenomenology, and to put them into a wider context of quantum gravity research.

Abstract:Quantum Field Theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding fields and the particles associated with them, and is the basis of particle physics and condensed matter research. This graduate level textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to quantum field theory, giving equal emphasis to operator and path integral formalisms. It covers modern research such as helicity spinors, BCFW construction and generalized unitarity cuts; as well as treating advanced topics including BRST quantization, loop equations, and finite temperature field theory. Various quantum fields are described, including scalar and fermionic fields, Abelian vector fields and Quantum ElectroDynamics (QED), and finally non-Abelian vector fields and Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD). Applications to scattering cross sections in QED and QCD are also described. Each chapter ends with exercises and an important concepts section, allowing students to identify the key aspects of the chapter and test their understanding.
Field theories with higher-group symmetry from composite currents

Abstract:Higher-form symmetries are associated with transformations that only act on extended objects, not on point particles. Typically, higher-form symmetries live alongside ordinary, point-particle (0-form), symmetries and they can be jointly described in terms of a direct product symmetry group. However, when the actions of 0-form and higher-form symmetries become entangled, a more general mathematical structure is required, related to higher categorical groups. Systems with continuous higher-group symmetry were previously constructed in a top-down manner, descending from quantum field theories with a specific mixed 't Hooft anomaly. I show that higher-group symmetry also naturally emerges from a bottom-up, low-energy perspective, when the physical system at hand contains at least two different given, spontaneously broken symmetries. This leads generically to a hierarchy of emergent higher-form symmetries, corresponding to the Grassmann algebra of topological currents of the theory, with an underlying higher-group structure. Examples of physical systems featuring such higher-group symmetry include superfluid mixtures and variants of axion electrodynamics.

Classical BV Theories on Manifolds with Boundary

Abstract:In this paper we extend the classical BV framework to gauge theories on spacetime manifolds with boundary. In particular, we connect the BV construction in the bulk with the BFV construction on the boundary and we develop its extension to strata of higher codimension in the case of manifolds with corners. We present several examples including electrodynamics, Yang-Mills theory and topological field theories coming from the AKSZ construction, in particular, the Chern-Simons theory, the BF theory, and the Poisson sigma model. This paper is the first step towards developing the perturbative quantization of such theories on manifolds with boundary in a way consistent with gluing.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss how the gauge principle can be applied to classical-mechanics models with finite degrees of freedom. The local invariance of a model is understood as its invariance under the action of a matrix Lie group of transformations parameterized by arbitrary functions. It is formally presented how this property can be introduced in such systems, followed by modern applications. Furthermore, Lagrangians describing classical-mechanics systems with local invariance are separated in equivalence classes according to their local structures.

Abstract:With a view toward a theory of fracton and embeddon in condensed matter, we introduce a higher-moment polynomial degree-(m-1) global symmetry, acting on complex scalar/vector/tensor fields. We relate this higher-moment global symmetry of $n$-dimensional space, to a lower degree (either ordinary or higher-moment, e.g., degree-(m-1-$\ell$)) subdimensional or subsystem global symmetry on layers of $(n-\ell)$-submanifolds. These submanifolds are algebraic affine varieties (i.e., solutions of polynomials). The structure of layers of submanifolds as subvarieties can be studied via mathematical tools of embedding, foliation and algebraic geometry. We also generalize Noether's theorem for this higher-moment polynomial global symmetry. We can promote the higher-moment global symmetry to a local symmetry, and derive a new family of higher-rank-m symmetric tensor gauge theory by gauging. By further gauging a discrete charge conjugation symmetry, we derive a new more general class of non-abelian rank-m tensor gauge field theory: a hybrid class of (symmetric or non-symmetric) higher-rank-m tensor gauge theory and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory, generalizing [arXiv:1909.13879]'s theory interplaying between gapless and gapped sectors.

Abstract:A new formulation of four-dimensional quantum field theories, such as scalar-field theory, is proposed as a large n limit of a special n×n matrix model. Our reduction scheme works beyond planar approximation and applies for QFT with finite number of fields. It uses quenched coordinates instead of quenched momenta of the old Eguchi–Kawai reduction known to yield correctly only the planar sector of quantum field theory. Fermions can be also included.

Abstract:We study the classical and quantum "properties" of Galilean fermions in 3+1 dimensions. We have taken the case of massless Galilean fermions minimally coupled to the scalar field. At the classical level, the Lagrangian is obtained by null reducing the relativistic theory in one higher dimension. The resulting theory is found to be invariant under infinite Galilean conformal symmetries. Using Noether's procedure, we construct the corresponding infinite conserved charges. Path integral techniques are then employed to probe the quantum "properties" of the theory. The theory is found to be renormalizable. A novel feature of the theory is the emergence of mass scale at the first order of quantum correction. The conformal symmetry of the theory breaks at the quantum level. We confirm this by constructing the beta function of the theory.

Abstract:In this and a companion paper, we show that quantum field theories with gauge symmetries permit a broader class of classical dynamics than typically assumed. In this article, we show that the dynamics extracted from the path integral or Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity allows for classical states that do not satisfy the full set of Einstein's equations. This amounts to loosening the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints that are imposed on the initial state. Nevertheless, the quantum theory permits gauge invariant time evolution of these states. The time evolution of these states is such that at the classical level the full set of Einstein's equations would appear to hold, with the physical effects of these states being attributable to an auxiliary, covariantly conserved energy-momentum tensor with no internal degrees of freedom. We derive the generalized Einstein equations for these states and show that a homogeneous and isotropic initial background state contributes to expansion identical to cold dark matter. The inhomogeneous components of this state could source curvature perturbations that grow linearly at linear order. This auxiliary contribution to Einstein's equations could have either sign and thus provide a trivial way to violate the null energy condition, enabling novel gravitational dynamics such as cosmic bounces and wormholes.

A postquantum theory of classical gravity?

Abstract:The effort to discover a quantum theory of gravity is motivated by the need to reconcile the incompatibility between quantum theory and general relativity. Here, we present an alternative approach by constructing a consistent theory of classical gravity coupled to quantum field theory. The dynamics is linear in the density matrix, completely positive and trace preserving, and reduces to Einstein's theory of general relativity in the classical limit. Consequently, the dynamics doesn't suffer from the pathologies of the semiclassical theory based on expectation values. The assumption that general relativity is classical necessarily modifies the dynamical laws of quantum mechanics -- the theory must be fundamentally stochastic in both the metric degrees of freedom and in the quantum matter fields. This allows it to evade several no-go theorems purporting to forbid classical-quantum interactions. The measurement postulate of quantum mechanics is not needed -- the interaction of the quantum degrees of freedom with classical space-time necessarily causes decoherence in the quantum system. We first derive the general form of classical-quantum dynamics and consider realisations which have as its limit deterministic classical Hamiltonian evolution. The formalism is then applied to quantum field theory interacting with the classical space-time metric. One can view the classical-quantum theory as fundamental or as an effective theory useful for computing the back-reaction of quantum fields on geometry. We discuss a number of open questions from the perspective of both viewpoints.

Abstract:In this and companion papers, we show that quantum field theories with gauge symmetries permit a broader class of classical dynamics than typically assumed. In this article, we show that the quantization of electromagnetism permits the existence of classical electric field states that do not obey Gauss's law. These states are gauge invariant and their time evolution can be consistently described using the Schrödinger equation. The time evolution of these states is such that at the classical level, the full set of Maxwell's equations would appear to hold, with the physical effects of these states being attributable to an auxiliary, static ``shadow'' charge density with no internal degrees of freedom. This density could affect the dynamics of charged particles in our universe and it may thus be of observational interest.
