Abstract:We present the results of specific heat measurements on single crystals of C60 in (pure) fcc and (toluene containing) orthorhombic phases. The orientational ordering phase transitions are at surprisingly close temperatures (260K and 239K) for the two polytypes. The single crystal results are compared with DSC measurements on powders.

Abstract:Conduction band structure of K3C60 single crystal films was studied at temperatures near 200 K. Band dispersions along the [111] direction could be observed at 190 K using synchrotron radiation photoemission spectra technique. When the sample temperature increased to 220 K, most subpeaks of the conduction band vanished and the dispersions could not be observed. This result coincides with the existence of an orientational phase transition occurring at 200 K. The fcc nearest-neighbor antiferromagetic Ising model was adopted to analyze the temperature dependence of the band structure. The phase transition is due to the one-dimensional-disordered structure (1DDS) at lower temperatures, which turns to a mixture of bi-directional structure domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures. The number of disordered molecules was deduced to be about 40 percent of the total molecules at 220 K.

Abstract:The order–disorder phase transition temperature of the C60 crystal intercalated with O2 shifts from 257 (of pure sample) to 236K. The internal friction peak due to the orientational relaxation also shifts from 142.8 (of pure sample) to 137.2K and takes an asymmetric shape. The activation energy varies from 252 (of pure sample) to 226meV. It is proposed that non-sphericity of O2 influences the phase transition temperature and the orientational relaxation dramatically.

Abstract:Differential scanning calorimetry revealed a secondary transition at a lower temperature besides the order-disorder phase transition near 260K in powders, not in single crystals, of C-60 from which solvents and impurities had been carefully excluded. This is attributed to phase transformation facilitated by nucleation around stacking faults. This proposal is supported by internal friction measurements on films, which confirmed the presence of this secondary transition, and by x-ray diffraction, which detected an hcp structure within the fee lattice of C-60 at room temperature.

Abstract:The internal friction of the polycrystalline C60 films was measured in the temperature range of 320–620 K. Around 426 K, a λ-shaped internal friction peak was detected. The peak was interpreted in terms of another phase transition above the order-disorder phase transition temperature.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation angle resolved photoemission spectra (PES) were measured on the (111) surface of K3C60 single crystal film at three different temperatures, namely, 190, 220 and 300K. Dispersions for the subbands of the conduction band along the [111] direction could be observed clearly at 190K, and the band structure was nearly the same as that at 150K corresponding to the one-dimensional-disordered orientational structure (1DDS) of K3C60. Most subpeaks smeared and the dispersions could no longer be observed when the sample temperature was raised to 220K. The PES at room temperature differed remarkably from that at lower temperatures. The change of spectra with temperature is consistent with an orientational phase transition at 200K, and can be explained by the theory of the fcc antiferromagnetic Ising model, assuming that the 1DD structure at lower temperatures converts to be a mixture of bi-directional structure domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures.

Abstract:We present a theory of the elasticity and fluctuations of the Smectic A and C phases in uniaxial, anisotropic disordered environments, e.g., stretched aerogel. We find that, bizarrely, the low-temperature, lower-symmetry Smectic $C$ phase is less translationally ordered than the high-temperature, higher-symmetry Smectic $A$ phase, with short-ranged "$m=1$ Bragg glass" and algebraic "XY Bragg glass" order, respectively. The $AC$ phase transition belongs to a new universality class, whose fixed points and exponents we find in a $d=5-\epsilon$ expansion. We give very detailed predictions for the very rich light scattering behavior of both phases, and the critical point.

Abstract:By using a piston-cylinder type hydrostatic high pressure unit, the electrical de conductance of bulk C-60 Single crystal was measured in the pressure range of 0 to 0.8 GPa at different temperatures. With increasing pressure, a discontinuous increase of the conductance was observed, which can be ascribed to the orientational ordering phase transition. The slope of the phase line corresponding to the orientational ordering transition in the P-T phase diagram is determined to be dT/dP(c) = 150 K/GPa. At elevated temperatures, the slopes of the conductance versus pressure give an anomalous discontinuous change before the orientational ordering transition.
13C Solid-State MAS NMR Studies of the Low Temperature Phase Transition in Fullerene C60

Abstract:At the phase transition near 262 K, the 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation time, T1, in static samples of pure C60 decreases from 31 to 0.8 s as the temperature decreases by less than 8 K, while X-ray diffraction patterns change little. Under magic-angle spinning T1 decreases from 46 to 0.8 s over only 2 K, while the onset of the phase transition is lowered to 255 K. NMR lineshapes of static samples are unchanged in the 280–235 K range, but the isotropic 13C chemical shift changes linearly by 1.88×10−3 ppm K−1. Uniaxial cage motion cannot average the chemical shift anisotropy to the value observed in static samples, and nutation must be present. Our tentative explanation of the results is based on differences in the nature of C60 cage motions at different temperatures.

Abstract:C60 powder, pellets and single crystals were oxygenated at 0.11 kbar and then studied with MAS 13C NMR, DSC and XRD. In agreement with reports by other authors, powder samples exhibited minor NMR resonances, indicative of blocking of fullerene rotation by interstitial oxygen, the distribution of which had yet to attain the equilibrium state. Also, as reported by others, DSC showed two endothermic peaks near 260 K, and both, we found, corresponded to a discontinuous change in the lattice parameter. The peak on the low-temperature side moved up in temperature with elapsed time. Pellets, in which presumably oxygen diffused easily, displayed only one peak but shifted in the same manner. Single crystals, in contrast, had only the higher-temperature “immobile” peak. We suggest that the shifting endotherm originates from the transition of oxygen-intercalated C60 to a merohedral disordered phase, in which the rotation of fullerene molecules is partially impeded by oxygen. A phenomenological model is proposed for this transition.

Abstract:We report on X-ray studies of freely suspended hexatic films of three different liquid crystal compounds. By applying angular X-ray cross-correlation analysis (XCCA) to the measured diffraction patterns the parameters of the bond-orientational (BO) order in the hexatic phase were directly determined. The temperature evolution of the BO order parameters was analyzed on the basis of the multicritical scaling theory (MCST). Our results confirmed the validity of the MCST in the whole temperature range of existence of the hexatic phase for all three compounds. The temperature dependence of the BO order parameters in the vicinity of the hexatic-smectic transition was fitted by a conventional power law with a critical exponent $\beta\approx0.1$ of extremely small value. We found that the temperature dependence of higher order harmonics of the BO order scales as the powers of the first harmonic, with exponent equal to harmonic number. This indicates a nonlinear coupling of the BO order parameters of different order. It is shown that compounds of various composition, possessing different phase sequences, display the same thermodynamic behavior in the hexatic phase and in the vicinity of the smectic-hexatic phase transition.

Landau Theory of Barocaloric Plastic Crystals

Abstract:We present a minimal Landau theory of plastic-to-crystal phase transitions in which the key components are a multipole-moment order parameter that describes the orientational ordering of the constituent molecules, coupling between such order parameter and elastic strains, and thermal expansion. We illustrate the theory with the simplest non-trivial model in which the orientational ordering is described by a quadrupole moment, and use such model to calculate barocaloric effects in plastic crystals that are driven by hydrostatic pressure. The model captures characteristic features of plastic-to-crystal phase transitions, namely, large changes in volume and entropy at the transition, as well as the linear dependence of the transition temperature with pressure. We identify temperature regions in the barocaloric response associated with the individual plastic and crystal phases, and those involving the phase transition. Our model is in overall agreement with previous experiments in powdered samples of fullerite C$_{60}$, and predicts peak isothermal entropy changes of $\sim90 \,{\rm J K^{-1} kg^{-1}}$ and peak adiabatic temperature changes of $\sim35 \,{\rm K}$ under $0.60\,$GPa at $265\,$K in fullerite single crystals.

Abstract:C 60 /Sb bilayers were prepared on the substrate of mica, and their electrical properties were investigated by in situ dc conductivity measurements. The results indicate that the Sb doping in C60 significantly affects the critical temperature (Tc) for the orientational order–disorder transition of C60. The Tc of Sb-doped C60 increases to about 278 K, ∼18 K higher than that of the pristine C60. This transition is sensitive to Sb content and disappears upon annealing. A possible mechanism of such a phase transition is discussed.

Abstract:The comparison of the electronic structures of fcc C60 solids between two different molecular orientations as been done by performing a band structure calculation. We have found that the molecular orientation causes considerable changes on the degeneracies at GAMMA points, the dispersion of bands and the location of valence band maximum and conduction band minimum. The band variation upon molecular orientation should become an important subject in physics and materials science of the new class of solid fullerenes.
Ab initio Determination of Phase Stabilities of Dynamically Disordered Solids: rotational C2 disorder in Li2C2

Abstract:The temperature-induced orthorhombic to cubic phase transition in Li2C2 is a prototypical example of a solid to solid phase transformation between an ordered phase, which is well described within the phonon theory, and a dynamically disordered phase with rotating molecules, for which the standard phonon theory is not applicable. The transformation in Li2C2 happens from a phase with directionally ordered C2 dimers to a structure, where they are dynamically disorderd. We provide a description of this transition by employing ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) based stress-strain thermodynamic integration on a deformation path that connects the ordered and dynamically disordered phases. The free energy difference between the two phases is obtained. The entropy that stabilizes the dynamically disordered cubic phase is captured by the behavior of the stress on the deformation path. We also show that a combination of the stress-strain thermodynamic integration and machine learning force field methodologies appears as a promising path in studies of dynamically disordered materials.

Abstract:An effect of the volume change upon proper ferroelastic (martensitic) phase transitions in cubic crystals is considered. Corresponding terms in the Ginzburg-Landau expansion of the Gibbs free energy are analyzed for the first- as well as second-order phase transitions from cubic to tetragonal lattice under the action of uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure. The pressure effect on the critical temperature as well as on the phase transition anomalies of isothermal compressibility and linear thermal expansion coefficient are studied and recent experimental data on thermal expansion anomalies in V$_3$Si, In-Tl and Ni-Al are discussed. The non-linearity of thermal expansion leads to the special relation between the shear strain and volume change as a result of the elastic energy minimization. This phenomenon can provide the transformation from FCC lattice to BCC one, observed in the iron alloys.

Possible Orientationally Ordered States of Bucky-Cubane

Abstract:For temperatures above $T^*=130$K C$_{60} \cdot$C$_8$H$_8$ forms a cubic crystal consisting of two interpenetrating fcc sublattices, one of freely rotating Buckys C$_{60}$ and the other of orientationally ordered cubane C$_8$H$_8$. The crystal structure below a discontinuous transition is found to be orthorhombic, but the nature of the ordering of the Buckys has not yet been determined. Here possible orderings of the Buckys consistent with the size and symmetry of the orthorhombic unit cell are analyzed. Most likely inversion symmetry is preserved at the transition, in which case the small number of possible orderings are described. If inversion symmetry is removed, the point group can be C$_{2v}$ which supports ferroelectricity or D$_2$ which can be confirmed by proton NMR measurements.

Abstract:Ginzburg-Landau-de Gennes -type covariant theories are extensively used in connection with twist grain boundary (TGB) phases of chiral smectogens. We analyze the stability conditions for the linear, covariant elasticity theory of smectic-C liquid crystals in the context of achiral materials, and predict an equilibrium modulated structure with an oblique wavevector. We suggest that a previous experimental observation of stripes in smectic-C is consistent with the predicted structure.
