Abstract:The rapidly rotational motion of C-60 molecules will provide us with an ingenious way to test Mashhoon's spin-rotation coupling. Since in the low-temperature phase (below 300 K) of C-60 solid the noncentral intermolecular potential will cause the precession and nutation of rotating frequency of C-60 molecules, which gives rise to a time-dependent coupling of valency electron spin to the C-60 rotation, the electron wave functions in rotating C-60 molecules will acquire geometric phases arising from this time-dependent spin-rotation coupling. The geometric phases of valency electrons in C-60 molecules is calculated by using the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory in the present paper. It is shown that geometric phases of electrons in C-60 molecules may be measured through the photoelectron spectroscopy of C-60. A physically interesting fact that the information about rotation and precession of C-60 molecules in the orientational ordered (or disordered) phase may be read off from the photoelectron spectroscopy of C-60 is also demonstrated. Thus, the measurement of variation of C-60 rotating frequency through the photoelectron spectroscopy will enable us to obtain the noncentral intermolecular potential, which is helpful in investigating the molecular mechanics of C-60 solid.

Abstract:Conduction band structure of K3C60 single crystal films was studied at temperatures near 200 K. Band dispersions along the [111] direction could be observed at 190 K using synchrotron radiation photoemission spectra technique. When the sample temperature increased to 220 K, most subpeaks of the conduction band vanished and the dispersions could not be observed. This result coincides with the existence of an orientational phase transition occurring at 200 K. The fcc nearest-neighbor antiferromagetic Ising model was adopted to analyze the temperature dependence of the band structure. The phase transition is due to the one-dimensional-disordered structure (1DDS) at lower temperatures, which turns to a mixture of bi-directional structure domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures. The number of disordered molecules was deduced to be about 40 percent of the total molecules at 220 K.

Abstract:We report a first-principles study of the structure and phase transition of CexTh1-x (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.43, 0.5, 0.6, 0.76 and 1.00) alloys. The structural properties of CexTh1-x under pressure are well predicted. The fcc-bct (face-centered cubic to body-centered tetragonal) transition pressure decreases with the increasing Ce concentration in CexTh1-x. The transition pressure as a function of the Ce concentration of the CexTh1-x alloys can be well described as a second-order polynomial: P = 70.00 - 32.08x - 22.93x(2). (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:We report on the first-principles study of the phase transition and thermodynamic properties of the thorium metal (Th) within the framework of quasiharmonic approximation. The structural properties of Th under pressure are well reproduced. It is found that the fcc–bct phase transition occurs at 70 GPa. Based on our calculated phonon dispersion curve that is in good agreement with experiment, the thermal equation of state and thermodynamic properties, such as thermal pressure, heat capacity and entropy are obtained. All the properties of Th under high pressure and high temperature are predicted successfully.

Abstract:Using a three-baryon $\Lambda NN$ potential having a spin-independent dispersive and a two-pion exchange components, realistic variational Monte Carlo calculations have been performed for the $\Lambda$-seperation energy for $^{5}_{\Lambda}$He. A relationship between strengths associated with both pieces of $\Lambda NN$ force giving exact experimental $\Lambda$-seperation energy has been obtained which then combined with our previous study on $^{17}_{\,\,\Lambda}$O hypernucleus determines a unique and acceptable set of strength parameters for $\Lambda NN$ potential. The $\Lambda NN$ force is found important for the core polarization.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation angle resolved photoemission spectra (PES) were measured on the (111) surface of K3C60 single crystal film at three different temperatures, namely, 190, 220 and 300K. Dispersions for the subbands of the conduction band along the [111] direction could be observed clearly at 190K, and the band structure was nearly the same as that at 150K corresponding to the one-dimensional-disordered orientational structure (1DDS) of K3C60. Most subpeaks smeared and the dispersions could no longer be observed when the sample temperature was raised to 220K. The PES at room temperature differed remarkably from that at lower temperatures. The change of spectra with temperature is consistent with an orientational phase transition at 200K, and can be explained by the theory of the fcc antiferromagnetic Ising model, assuming that the 1DD structure at lower temperatures converts to be a mixture of bi-directional structure domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures.

Abstract:By using a piston-cylinder type hydrostatic high pressure unit, the electrical de conductance of bulk C-60 Single crystal was measured in the pressure range of 0 to 0.8 GPa at different temperatures. With increasing pressure, a discontinuous increase of the conductance was observed, which can be ascribed to the orientational ordering phase transition. The slope of the phase line corresponding to the orientational ordering transition in the P-T phase diagram is determined to be dT/dP(c) = 150 K/GPa. At elevated temperatures, the slopes of the conductance versus pressure give an anomalous discontinuous change before the orientational ordering transition.

Abstract:C60 powder, pellets and single crystals were oxygenated at 0.11 kbar and then studied with MAS 13C NMR, DSC and XRD. In agreement with reports by other authors, powder samples exhibited minor NMR resonances, indicative of blocking of fullerene rotation by interstitial oxygen, the distribution of which had yet to attain the equilibrium state. Also, as reported by others, DSC showed two endothermic peaks near 260 K, and both, we found, corresponded to a discontinuous change in the lattice parameter. The peak on the low-temperature side moved up in temperature with elapsed time. Pellets, in which presumably oxygen diffused easily, displayed only one peak but shifted in the same manner. Single crystals, in contrast, had only the higher-temperature “immobile” peak. We suggest that the shifting endotherm originates from the transition of oxygen-intercalated C60 to a merohedral disordered phase, in which the rotation of fullerene molecules is partially impeded by oxygen. A phenomenological model is proposed for this transition.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurement have been applied to investigate the phase transition and transport properties of Sr0.56C60O1.5 which is obtained by the reaction of SrCl2 with C60 anion aquatic solution. The new compound has a similar structure, but different transport properties as compared with metallic Sr-doped C60. X-ray diffraction shows that a first-order phase transition around 100 °C is related to the rearrangement of Sr2+ in the interstitial sites of the C60 lattice. The step change of ac conductivity near 100 °C is also attributed to the hopping of Sr2+ between interstitial sites. The ionic conductivity indicates the possibility of synthesizing superionic conductors based on C60 and its derivatives.

Abstract:The order–disorder phase transition temperature of the C60 crystal intercalated with O2 shifts from 257 (of pure sample) to 236K. The internal friction peak due to the orientational relaxation also shifts from 142.8 (of pure sample) to 137.2K and takes an asymmetric shape. The activation energy varies from 252 (of pure sample) to 226meV. It is proposed that non-sphericity of O2 influences the phase transition temperature and the orientational relaxation dramatically.

Abstract:The orientational configurations of C-60 molecules on the surface of a multilayer C-60 island with a (111)-terminating plane were studied at 78 K by using a scanning tunneling microscope. A 2x2 superlattice, which resulted from the orientational ordering of the C-60 molecules, was observed. In each unit cell of the superlattice, one C-60 molecule with a three-lobe intramolecular pattern, and three C-60 molecules with dumbbell-like intramolecular patterns, were clearly resolved. In combination with the theoretical analysis and simulation, the orientational configurations of the C-60 molecules were determined.

Abstract:The interface electronic structure of C60/CuPc and C60 heterojunctions on SiO2 and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite has been studied using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and synchrotron based photoelectron spectroscopy. Fermi level pinned to the negative integer charge transfer state of C60 molecules on the standing CuPc film has been observed, while nearly vacuum-level alignment is observed for C60 on the lying CuPc film. We also found small vacuum-level shifts for C60 on both standing and lying F16CuPc films, which can be attributed to the rearrangement of underlying F16CuPc molecules. With the use of orientation-controlled CuPc and F16CuPc thin films, C60 highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels relative to the substrate Fermi level can be tuned from 1.9 eV for C60 on the standing CuPc film to 1.0 eV on the standing F16CuPc film.

Abstract:C 60 /Sb bilayers were prepared on the substrate of mica, and their electrical properties were investigated by in situ dc conductivity measurements. The results indicate that the Sb doping in C60 significantly affects the critical temperature (Tc) for the orientational order–disorder transition of C60. The Tc of Sb-doped C60 increases to about 278 K, ∼18 K higher than that of the pristine C60. This transition is sensitive to Sb content and disappears upon annealing. A possible mechanism of such a phase transition is discussed.

Abstract:The assessed binary phase diagram of boron-carbon exhibits a single alloy phase designated "B4C" with rhombohedral symmetry occupying a broad composition range that falls just short of the nominal carbon content of 20%. As this composition range is nearly temperature independent, the phase diagram suggests a violation of the third law of thermodynamics, which typically requires compounds to achieve a definite stoichiometry at low temperatures. By means of first principles total energy calculations we predict the existence of two stoichiometric phases at T=0K: one of composition B4C with monoclinic symmetry; the other of composition B13C2 with rhombohedral symmetry. Using statistical mechanics to extend to finite temperatures, we demonstrate that the monoclinic phase reverts to the rhombohedral phase above T=600K, along with a slight reduction on carbon content.

13C Solid-State MAS NMR Studies of the Low Temperature Phase Transition in Fullerene C60

Abstract:At the phase transition near 262 K, the 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation time, T1, in static samples of pure C60 decreases from 31 to 0.8 s as the temperature decreases by less than 8 K, while X-ray diffraction patterns change little. Under magic-angle spinning T1 decreases from 46 to 0.8 s over only 2 K, while the onset of the phase transition is lowered to 255 K. NMR lineshapes of static samples are unchanged in the 280–235 K range, but the isotropic 13C chemical shift changes linearly by 1.88×10−3 ppm K−1. Uniaxial cage motion cannot average the chemical shift anisotropy to the value observed in static samples, and nutation must be present. Our tentative explanation of the results is based on differences in the nature of C60 cage motions at different temperatures.
Ab initio Determination of Phase Stabilities of Dynamically Disordered Solids: rotational C2 disorder in Li2C2

Abstract:The temperature-induced orthorhombic to cubic phase transition in Li2C2 is a prototypical example of a solid to solid phase transformation between an ordered phase, which is well described within the phonon theory, and a dynamically disordered phase with rotating molecules, for which the standard phonon theory is not applicable. The transformation in Li2C2 happens from a phase with directionally ordered C2 dimers to a structure, where they are dynamically disorderd. We provide a description of this transition by employing ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) based stress-strain thermodynamic integration on a deformation path that connects the ordered and dynamically disordered phases. The free energy difference between the two phases is obtained. The entropy that stabilizes the dynamically disordered cubic phase is captured by the behavior of the stress on the deformation path. We also show that a combination of the stress-strain thermodynamic integration and machine learning force field methodologies appears as a promising path in studies of dynamically disordered materials.

Abstract:The crystal structure, phase stability, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the Al2Cu (θ), Al2Cu (θ′) and Al2Cu (Ω) phases are studied by the first-principles method. The predicted lattice constants are consistent with the available literature data. θ, θ′ and Ω phases are thermodynamically stable, and do not undergo any phase transition under pressure. The values of B for Ω are larger than that for θ and θ′ phases, while the values of G for θ are smaller than that for Ω and θ′ phases. The studies also reveal that pressure can improve the elastic anisotropy of the θ, θ′ and Ω phases. The Debye temperature, heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient for the phases are determined by the quasi-harmonic Debye model. Under identical conditions, the values of ΘD from high to low is in the following order: θ′>Ω>θ. The heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient for θ, θ′ and Ω phases decrease with pressure when the temperature is kept constant. In contrast, thermal expansion coefficient α is more sensitive to any changes in pressure than any temperature change in the temperature range, 300–800K.
