Abstract:We report the study of the internal friction of C60 polycrystal films with different grain size (50 ��500nm) measured at the frequency ranged from 270 to 3140 Hz. At around 260K, an ��-shaped internal friction peak and a modulus drop corresponding to the order-disorder phase transition are observed. With the decrease of grain size, the height of the Q1 peak and the magnitude of the modulus drop increase. The height of the Q-1 peak is found to be proportional to the measurement frequency. The ��-shaped internal friction peak may be attribute to the fluctuation of new phase embedded in the old phase. The large amount of boundaries in the crystal of little grain size will improve the rate of nucleation of new phase and the peak will become higher. The magnitude of the modulus drop blow 260 K is proportional to the measurement frequency , while above 260 K , the modulus is frequency independent.

Abstract:The order–disorder phase transition temperature of the C60 crystal intercalated with O2 shifts from 257 (of pure sample) to 236K. The internal friction peak due to the orientational relaxation also shifts from 142.8 (of pure sample) to 137.2K and takes an asymmetric shape. The activation energy varies from 252 (of pure sample) to 226meV. It is proposed that non-sphericity of O2 influences the phase transition temperature and the orientational relaxation dramatically.
13C Solid-State MAS NMR Studies of the Low Temperature Phase Transition in Fullerene C60

Abstract:At the phase transition near 262 K, the 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation time, T1, in static samples of pure C60 decreases from 31 to 0.8 s as the temperature decreases by less than 8 K, while X-ray diffraction patterns change little. Under magic-angle spinning T1 decreases from 46 to 0.8 s over only 2 K, while the onset of the phase transition is lowered to 255 K. NMR lineshapes of static samples are unchanged in the 280–235 K range, but the isotropic 13C chemical shift changes linearly by 1.88×10−3 ppm K−1. Uniaxial cage motion cannot average the chemical shift anisotropy to the value observed in static samples, and nutation must be present. Our tentative explanation of the results is based on differences in the nature of C60 cage motions at different temperatures.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation photoemission spectra were measured along the [111] direction of K3C60 single crystal film at 190K, 200K and 300K. Conduction band dispersions can be observed at 190K, and the band structure was nearly the same as that at 150K corresponding to the one-dimensional-disordered orientational structure (IDDS) of K3C60. When the sample temperature increased to 220K, most subpeaks of the conduction band vanished and the dispersions could not be observed. This result coincides with the existence of an orientational phase transition occurred at 200K. The fcc nearest-neighbor antiferromagetic Ising model was found to be suitable to analyz the temperature dependence of the band structure. The phase transition is due to the one-dimensional-disordered orientational structure at lower temperatures turned to be the mixture of BDS domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures. The number of disordered molecules was deduced to be about 40 percent of the total molecular number at 220K. At room temperature, the electronic structure was drastically different from that at low temperatures because of the dynamical disorder Of C-60 molecules.

Abstract:C60 powder, pellets and single crystals were oxygenated at 0.11 kbar and then studied with MAS 13C NMR, DSC and XRD. In agreement with reports by other authors, powder samples exhibited minor NMR resonances, indicative of blocking of fullerene rotation by interstitial oxygen, the distribution of which had yet to attain the equilibrium state. Also, as reported by others, DSC showed two endothermic peaks near 260 K, and both, we found, corresponded to a discontinuous change in the lattice parameter. The peak on the low-temperature side moved up in temperature with elapsed time. Pellets, in which presumably oxygen diffused easily, displayed only one peak but shifted in the same manner. Single crystals, in contrast, had only the higher-temperature “immobile” peak. We suggest that the shifting endotherm originates from the transition of oxygen-intercalated C60 to a merohedral disordered phase, in which the rotation of fullerene molecules is partially impeded by oxygen. A phenomenological model is proposed for this transition.

Abstract:Using a three-baryon $\Lambda NN$ potential having a spin-independent dispersive and a two-pion exchange components, realistic variational Monte Carlo calculations have been performed for the $\Lambda$-seperation energy for $^{5}_{\Lambda}$He. A relationship between strengths associated with both pieces of $\Lambda NN$ force giving exact experimental $\Lambda$-seperation energy has been obtained which then combined with our previous study on $^{17}_{\,\,\Lambda}$O hypernucleus determines a unique and acceptable set of strength parameters for $\Lambda NN$ potential. The $\Lambda NN$ force is found important for the core polarization.

Abstract:The dielectric properties (1–50 kHz) of polycrystalline C60 have been carefully studied from 70 to 300 K. Below 170 K, the ac conductance σ(T) is proportional to the temperature, which is thought to be due to the phonon-assisted jump of electrons between localized states around the Fermi level. A significant change of the slope of the capacitance versus temperature curve occurs at 85 K, which can be attributed to the glass transition. It is confirmed that electric dipoles may be induced by orientational defects in C60 crystal. The capacitance drop around 256 K is found to originate from the disappearance of the orientational defects above the order–disorder phase-transition temperature.

Abstract:Corresponding to a downward cusp of the elastic modulus, a narrow λ-shaped internal friction peak appears at 251 K for a fullerite film on a fused SiO2 substrate, having a very small thermal hysteresis (<1 K). X-ray diffraction shows an anomalous change of the lattice constant a near 251 K. The mechanism of the λ-shaped internal friction peak at 251 K may be attributed to the stress-induced motion of the interphase boundary for the order-disorder transition and due to the preferential distribution of fluctuating new phase components with an equivalent orientation. The effect of oxygen in air has been primarily explored.

Abstract:By using a piston-cylinder type hydrostatic high pressure unit, the electrical de conductance of bulk C-60 Single crystal was measured in the pressure range of 0 to 0.8 GPa at different temperatures. With increasing pressure, a discontinuous increase of the conductance was observed, which can be ascribed to the orientational ordering phase transition. The slope of the phase line corresponding to the orientational ordering transition in the P-T phase diagram is determined to be dT/dP(c) = 150 K/GPa. At elevated temperatures, the slopes of the conductance versus pressure give an anomalous discontinuous change before the orientational ordering transition.

Abstract:Polymerization of C-60 is realized under high temperature and high pressure. X-ray diffraction reveals a rhombohedral lattice structure in the product, and solid-state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirms the formation of sp(3) bonds between C-60 molecules. Specific heat is then measured over the temperature range of 300-2 K. It is found that its specific heat values are significantly less than those in fullerite within the region of 80-2 K, and this huge reduction is attributed to the suppression of intermolecular librational modes in polymerized C-60. An excellent lit to the experimental data over the entire temperature range is provided by a model, which needs to include only three-dimensional and two-dimensional translational modes in various contributions at different temperatures.

Abstract:Differential scanning calorimetry revealed a secondary transition at a lower temperature besides the order-disorder phase transition near 260K in powders, not in single crystals, of C-60 from which solvents and impurities had been carefully excluded. This is attributed to phase transformation facilitated by nucleation around stacking faults. This proposal is supported by internal friction measurements on films, which confirmed the presence of this secondary transition, and by x-ray diffraction, which detected an hcp structure within the fee lattice of C-60 at room temperature.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation angle resolved photoemission spectra (PES) were measured on the (111) surface of K3C60 single crystal film at three different temperatures, namely, 190, 220 and 300K. Dispersions for the subbands of the conduction band along the [111] direction could be observed clearly at 190K, and the band structure was nearly the same as that at 150K corresponding to the one-dimensional-disordered orientational structure (1DDS) of K3C60. Most subpeaks smeared and the dispersions could no longer be observed when the sample temperature was raised to 220K. The PES at room temperature differed remarkably from that at lower temperatures. The change of spectra with temperature is consistent with an orientational phase transition at 200K, and can be explained by the theory of the fcc antiferromagnetic Ising model, assuming that the 1DD structure at lower temperatures converts to be a mixture of bi-directional structure domains and disordered molecules at higher temperatures.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurement have been applied to investigate the phase transition and transport properties of Sr0.56C60O1.5 which is obtained by the reaction of SrCl2 with C60 anion aquatic solution. The new compound has a similar structure, but different transport properties as compared with metallic Sr-doped C60. X-ray diffraction shows that a first-order phase transition around 100 °C is related to the rearrangement of Sr2+ in the interstitial sites of the C60 lattice. The step change of ac conductivity near 100 °C is also attributed to the hopping of Sr2+ between interstitial sites. The ionic conductivity indicates the possibility of synthesizing superionic conductors based on C60 and its derivatives.

Abstract:A bulk thermodynamics study of lead zirconate titanate ferroelectric PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 is performed through internal friction, Young's modulus and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. Two internal friction peaks are observed near 261 K and 225 K. The former correlates with an enthalpy change revealed by DSC data and is ascribable to a first-order tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition. The latter (225 K), however, showing asymmetric line shape together with a dramatic decrease in Young's modulus, might correspond to a phase transition associated with the motion of domain walls.

Abstract:The valence band evolution Of C-60 film upon Yb intercalation is investigated by the synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-PES) technique. The results show that only Yb2.75C60 forms at lower intercalation stages and imply that other phases of YbxC60 (x > 2.75) form with more Yb atoms intercalated into the Yb2.75C60 sample. No Fermi edge is observed for all the spectral lines in this work, which reveals that the superconducting Yb fulleride, whether it is Yb2.75C60 or other phase, has semiconducting property at room temperature. To extract the intrinsic density of state of the valence band from the Yb 4f-superposed experimental data, the SR-PE spectra were measured for the well-defined phase of Yb2,75C60 with varying photon energies (18.0-45.0 eV). The results show that the spectral data can drastically depart from the density of states of the valence band due to the photoemission of Yb 4f core levels. However, the valence band can, still be quantitatively extracted from the experimental data by the least-square simulation.

Abstract:Yb-intercalated C60 thin film was prepared in a ultra-high-vacuum system. The binding energies of C 1s, Yb 4f and Yb 4d during the compound formation were studied by x-ray photoemission technique. The stoichiometry of the phase-pure sample was determined by the peak intensities of Yb 4f and C 1s. The result turned to be very near to that for Yb2.75C60 that was first determined for bulk-phase sample by x-ray diffraction measurement. The positions and intensities of the Yb 4f and Yb 4d peaks revealed the charge state of Yb2+ in Yb2.75C60. The C 1s core level for the phase-pure sample shifted towards lower binding energy by ≈0.5 eV relative to C60, which exhibited that some Yb 6s electrons transferred from Yb to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital band of C60. The shift and the FWHM of C 1s x-ray photoemission spectroscopic peak can be used as sample characterization in future researches on Yb/C60 compounds.

Abstract:By using a piston-cylinder type hydrostatic high-pressure unit, the electrical dc conductance of bulk C 60 single crystal was measured in the pressure range of 0 to 0.6 GPa at 290 K. Wlth increasing pressure, a discontinuous increase of the conductance was observed at the pressure of 0.176 GPa, which can be ascribed to. the orientational ordering phase transition. In the simple cubic phase, the increase of conductance with increasing pressure is faster than that in the face-centered-cubic phase.
