Abstract:We present a theory of the elasticity and fluctuations of the Smectic A and C phases in uniaxial, anisotropic disordered environments, e.g., stretched aerogel. We find that, bizarrely, the low-temperature, lower-symmetry Smectic $C$ phase is less translationally ordered than the high-temperature, higher-symmetry Smectic $A$ phase, with short-ranged "$m=1$ Bragg glass" and algebraic "XY Bragg glass" order, respectively. The $AC$ phase transition belongs to a new universality class, whose fixed points and exponents we find in a $d=5-\epsilon$ expansion. We give very detailed predictions for the very rich light scattering behavior of both phases, and the critical point.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the elastic properties and fluctuation behaviors between the Smectic A phase and the Smectic C phase in a uniaxial disordered environment (such as in a stretched aerogel). Specifically, the researchers focus on: 1. **Phase transition theory**: The paper proposes the elastic and fluctuation theories of the Smectic A phase and the Smectic C phase in a uniaxial, anisotropic disordered environment. These theories explain that the Smectic C phase with low symmetry at low temperatures has less translational order than the Smectic A phase with high symmetry at high temperatures. 2. **Elastic properties**: The paper explores the singular behaviors of the elastic moduli of these two phases at different wave vectors, especially the behaviors near the critical point. For example, the change of the elastic modulus of the Smectic C phase with the wave vector shows abnormal elasticity, that is, these moduli are no longer constants but functions of the wave vector. 3. **X - ray scattering**: The paper predicts the different performances of the two phases in X - ray scattering. In the Smectic A phase, the X - ray scattering intensity shows a power - law divergence near the Bragg peak; while in the Smectic C phase, the scattering peak is wider and does not diverge. 4. **Critical behavior**: The paper studies that the phase transition from the Smectic A phase to the Smectic C phase belongs to a new universality class, and finds the corresponding fixed points and critical exponents through the \(d = 5-\epsilon\) expansion method. These critical exponents describe the power - law dependence of various physical quantities near the critical point. 5. **Light scattering**: The paper makes detailed predictions on the behaviors of the two phases in light scattering, especially the scaling behaviors of the light scattering intensity in different regions near the critical point. These predictions are helpful for experimental verification of the accuracy of the theoretical model. In conclusion, this paper aims to deeply understand the elastic properties and phase - transition behaviors of the Smectic A phase and the Smectic C phase in a disordered environment, provide a theoretical basis for experimental observations, and reveal the unique properties of these phase transitions.
