Abstract:We show that every null-additive set is meager-additive, where: (1) a set X subseteq 2^omega is null-additive if for every Lebesgue null set A subseteq 2^omega, X+A is null too; (2) we say that X subseteq 2^omega is meager-additive if for every A subseteq 2^omega which is meager also X+A is meager.

Abstract:We study a strengthening of the notion of a universally meager set and its dual counterpart that strengthens the notion of a universally null set. We say that a subset $A$ of a perfect Polish space $X$ is countably perfectly meager (respectively, countably perfectly null) in $X$, if for every perfect Polish topology $\tau$ on $X$, giving the original Borel structure of $X$, $A$ is covered by an $F_\sigma$-set $F$ in $X$ with the original Polish topology such that $F$ is meager with respect to $\tau$ (respectively, for every finite, non-atomic, Borel measure $\mu$ on $X$, $A$ is covered by an $F_\sigma$-set $F$ in $X$ with $\mu(F)=0$). We prove that if $2^{\aleph_0}\leq \aleph_2$, then there exists a universally meager set in $2^{\mathbb N}$ which is not countably perfectly meager in $2^{\mathbb N}$ (respectively, a universally null set in $2^{\mathbb N}$ which is not countably perfectly null in $2^{\mathbb N}$).

Abstract:Denote by $\mathcal{N}\!\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{MA}$ the ideals of null-additive and meager-additive subsets of $2^\omega$, respectively. We prove in ZFC that $\mathrm{add}(\mathcal{N}\!\mathcal{A})=\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{N}\!\mathcal{A})$ and introduce a new (Polish) relational system to reformulate Bartoszyński's and Judah's characterization of the uniformity of $\mathcal{MA}$, which is helpful to understand the combinatorics of $\mathcal{MA}$ and to prove consistency results. As for the latter, we prove that $\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal{MA})<\mathfrak{c}$ (even $\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal{MA})<\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{N})$) is consistent with ZFC, as well as several constellations of Cichoń's diagram with $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{N}\!\mathcal{A})$, $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{MA})$ and $\mathrm{add}(\mathcal{SN})$, which include $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{N}\!\mathcal{A})<\mathfrak{b}< \mathrm{non}(\mathcal{MA})$ and $\mathfrak{b}< \mathrm{add}(\mathcal{SN})<\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal{M})<\mathfrak{d}=\mathfrak{c}$.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a set of natural numbers. A set $B$, a set of natural numbers, is an additive complement of the set $A$ if all sufficiently large natural numbers can be represented in the form $x+y$, where $x\in A$ and $y\in B$. Erdős proposed a conjecture that every infinite set of natural numbers has a sparse additive complement, and in 1954, Lorentz proved this conjecture. This article describes the existence or non-existence of those additive complements of the set $A$ that is a subset of the complement of $A$. We provide a ratio test to verify the existence of such additive complements. In precise, we prove that if $A=\{a_i: i\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a set of natural numbers such that $a_i<a_{i+1} $ for $i \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty } (a_{n+1}/a_{n})>1$, then there exists a set $B\subset \mathbb{N}\setminus A$ such that $B$ is a sparse additive complement of the set $A$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal M_X$ denote the ideal of meager subsets of a topological space $X$. We prove that if $X$ is a completely metrizable space without isolated points, then the smallest cardinality of a non-meager subset of $X$, denoted $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X)$, is exactly $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X) = \mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_{\mathbb R})$, where $\kappa$ is the minimum weight of a nonempty open subset of $X$. We also characterize the additivity and covering numbers for $\mathcal M_X$ in terms of simple topological properties of $X$. Some bounds are proved and some questions raised concerning the cofinality of $\mathcal M_X$ and the cofinality of the related ideal of nowhere dense subsets of $X$. We also show that if $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space with $\pi$-weight $\kappa$, then $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X) \leq \mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_{\mathbb R})$. This bound for compact Hausdorff spaces is not sharp, in the sense that it is consistent for such a space to have non-meager subsets of even smaller cardinality.

Abstract:It is known that for any IP ⁎ set A and any sequence 〈xn〉n=1∞ in (N,+) , there exists a sum subsystem of 〈xn〉n=1∞ whose finite sums and finite products are in A . Similar results have been established for some other combinatorial notions. In this article, we introduce a general notion called completely I -large ⁎ sets, which can be IP ⁎ sets, central ⁎ sets or C ⁎ -sets when I is the corresponding ideal. And we establish a result for this notion to unify all known results. Furthermore, we apply this general result to another notion - quasi-central ⁎ sets to obtain corresponding combinatorial results.

Abstract:Many natural notions of additive and multiplicative largeness arise from results in Ramsey theory. In this paper, we explain the relationships between these notions for subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and in more general ring-theoretic structures. We show that multiplicative largeness begets additive largeness in three ways and give a collection of examples demonstrating the optimality of these results. We also give a variety of applications arising from the connection between additive and multiplicative largeness. For example, we show that given any $n, k \in \mathbb{N}$, any finite set with fewer than $n$ elements in a sufficiently large finite field can be translated so that each of its elements becomes a non-zero $k^{\text{th}}$ power. We also prove a theorem concerning Diophantine approximation along multiplicatively syndetic subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and a theorem showing that subsets of positive upper Banach density in certain multiplicative sub-semigroups of $\mathbb{N}$ of zero density contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Along the way, we develop a new characterization of upper Banach density in a wide class of amenable semigroups and make explicit the uniformity in recurrence theorems from measure theoretic and topological dynamics. This in turn leads to strengthened forms of classical theorems of Szemerédi and van der Waerden on arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:In this paper we study some additive properties of subsets of the set $\nats$ of positive integers: A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called {\it $k$-summable} (where $k\in\ben$) if $A$ contains $\textstyle \big{\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq {1,2,...,k\} \big}$ for some $k$-term sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... < x_k$. We say $A \subseteq \nats$ is finite FS-big if $A$ is $k$-summable for each positive integer $k$. We say is $A \subseteq \nats$ is infinite FS-big if for each positive integer $k,$ $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F\leq k}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. We say $A\subseteq \nats $ is an IP-set if $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F<\infty}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. By the Finite Sums Theorem [5], the collection of all IP-sets is partition regular, i.e., if $A$ is an IP-set then for any finite partition of $A$, one cell of the partition is an IP-set. Here we prove that the collection of all finite FS-big sets is also partition regular. Let $\TM =011010011001011010... $ denote the Thue-Morse word fixed by the morphism $0\mapsto 01$ and $1\mapsto 10$. For each factor $u$ of $\TM$ we consider the set $\TM\big|_u\subseteq \nats$ of all occurrences of $u$ in $\TM$. In this note we characterize the sets $\TM\big|_u$ in terms of the additive properties defined above. Using the Thue-Morse word we show that the collection of all infinite FS-big sets is not partition regular.

Abstract:A measure-preserving transformation (respectively a topological system) is null if the metric (respectively topological) sequence entropy is zero for any sequence. Kushnirenko has shown that an ergodic measure-preserving transformation has a discrete spectrum if and only if it is null. We prove that for a minimal system this statement remains true modulo an almost one-to-one extension. It allows us to show that a scattering system is disjoint from any null minimal system. Moreover, some necessary conditions for a transitive non-minimal system to be null are obtained. Localizing the notion of sequence entropy, we define sequence entropy pairs and show that there is a maximal null factor for any system. Meanwhile, we define a weaker notion, namely weak mixing pairs. It turns out that a system is weakly mixing if and only if any pair not in the diagonal is a sequence entropy pair if and only if the same holds for a weak mixing pair, answering a question in Blanchard et al (F. Blanchard, B. Host and A. Maass, Topological complexity. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys., 20 (2000), 641–662). For a group action we give a direct proof of the fact that the factor induced by the smallest invariant equivalence relation containing the regionally proximal relation is equicontinuous. Furthermore, we show that a non-equicontinuous minimal distal system is not null.

Abstract:This paper studies logical aspects of the notion of better quasi order, which has been introduced by C. Nash-Williams (Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society 1965 & 1968). A central tool in the theory of better quasi orders is the minimal bad array lemma. We show that this lemma is exceptionally strong from the viewpoint of reverse mathematics, a framework from mathematical logic. Specifically, it is equivalent to the set existence principle of $\Pi^1_2$-comprehension, over the base theory $\mathsf{ATR_0}$.

Basile and Rao gives a necessary and sufficient condition that a finite sum of finitely additive measures has the additive property. We generalize this result to the case of a countable sum of finitely additive meaures. An application of this result to density measures are also presented.

Abstract:Suppose you have an uncomputable set $X$ and you want to find a set $A$, all of whose infinite subsets compute $X$. There are several ways to do this, but all of them seem to produce a set $A$ which is fairly sparse. We show that this is necessary in the following technical sense: if $X$ is uncomputable and $A$ is a set of positive lower density then $A$ has an infinite subset which does not compute $X$. We also prove an analogous result for PA degree: if $X$ is uncomputable and $A$ is a set of positive lower density then $A$ has an infinite subset which is not of PA degree. We will show that these theorems are sharp in certain senses and also prove a quantitative version formulated in terms of Kolmogorov complexity. Our results use a modified version of Mathias forcing and build on work by Seetapun, Liu, and others on the reverse math of Ramsey's theorem for pairs.

Rings where a non-nilpotent sum of units is a unit

Abstract:A ring is *unit-additive* if a sum of units is always either a unit or nilpotent. For example, $k[X]$ and $k[X]/(X^2)$ are unit-additive, but $\mathbb Z$ is not. We prove a wide-ranging theorem about semigroup rings, showing among other things that an affine semigroup ring $A[M]$ is unit-additive if and only if $A$ is unit-additive and $M$ has no nontrivial invertible elements. In the algebraic variety setting, we get a characterization of unit additivity in terms of the nonexistence of nonconstant maps to the punctured affine line, which can be seen in terms of extensions of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Specializing to elliptic curves, we show that the affine coordinate ring of an elliptic curve is always unit-additive. The concept of unit additivity leads to the related concept of unit-additivity dimension -- i.e. how far is an integral domain from being unit-additive? It turns out that rings of unit-additivity dimension 1 are of some interest, as they include the rings of integers of number fields, all power series rings, and most local rings. We construct rings of all unit-additivity dimensions and show that in the affine setting, unit-additivity dimension is bounded above by Krull dimension. We also construct the *unit-additive closure* of an integral domain $D$, being the smallest subring of the fraction field of $D$ that is unit-additive, as a localization at a certain multiplicative set in $D$.
