Abstract:We say the sets of nonnegative integers A and B are additive complements if their sum contains all sufficiently large integers. In this paper we prove a conjecture of Chen and Fang about additive complement of a finite set.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a set of natural numbers. A set $B$, a set of natural numbers, is an additive complement of the set $A$ if all sufficiently large natural numbers can be represented in the form $x+y$, where $x\in A$ and $y\in B$. Erdős proposed a conjecture that every infinite set of natural numbers has a sparse additive complement, and in 1954, Lorentz proved this conjecture. This article describes the existence or non-existence of those additive complements of the set $A$ that is a subset of the complement of $A$. We provide a ratio test to verify the existence of such additive complements. In precise, we prove that if $A=\{a_i: i\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a set of natural numbers such that $a_i<a_{i+1} $ for $i \in \mathbb{N}$ and $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty } (a_{n+1}/a_{n})>1$, then there exists a set $B\subset \mathbb{N}\setminus A$ such that $B$ is a sparse additive complement of the set $A$.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a set of natural numbers. A set $B$, a set of natural numbers, is said to be an additive complement of the set $A$ if all sufficiently large natural numbers can be represented in the form $x+y$, where $x\in A$ and $y\in B$. This article describes various types of additive complements of the set $A$ such as those additive complement of $A$ that does not intersects $A$, additive complements of the form of the union of disjoint infinite arithmetic progressions, additive complement having various density etc. As an application of this study, we also focus on the structure of sumset of arithmetic progression and geometric progression. Apart from this, for given positive real no. $\alpha \leq 1$ and finite set $A$, we investigate a set $B$ such that it can be written as union of disjoint infinite arithmetic progression and density of $A+B$ is $\alpha$.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that if $A$ and $B$ are infinite subsets of positive integers such that every positive integer $n$ can be written as $n=ab$, $a\in A$, $b\in B$, then $\displaystyle \lim_{x\to \infty}\frac{A(x)B(x)}{x}=\infty $. We also prove many other results about sets like this.

Abstract:Two infinite sets $A$ and $B$ of non-negative integers are called \emph{perfect additive complements of non-negative integers}, if every non-negative integer can be uniquely expressed as the sum of elements from $A$ and $B$. In this paper, we define a Lagrange-like spectrum of the perfect additive complements ($\mathfrak{L} $ for short). As a main result, we obtain the smallest accumulation point of the set $\mathfrak{L} $ and prove that the set $\mathfrak{L} $ is closed. Other related results and problems are also contained.

Abstract:Let $C$ and $W$ be two sets of integers. If $C+W=\mathbb{Z}$, then $C$ is called an additive complement to $W$. We further call $C$ a minimal additive complement to $W$ if no proper subset of $C$ is an additive complement to $W$. Answering a problem of Nathanson in part, we give sufficient conditions of $W$ which has no minimal additive complements. Our result also extends the prior result of Chen and Yang.

Abstract:Two sets $A,B$ of nonnegative integers are called \emph{additive complements}, if all sufficiently large integers can be expressed as the sum of two elements from $A$ and $B$. We further call $A,B$ \emph{perfect additive complements} if every nonnegative integer can be uniquely expressed as the sum of two elements from $A$ and $B$. Let $A(x)$ be the counting function of $A$. In this paper, we focus on the function $SX$, where $SX=\limsup_{x\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\max\{A(x),B(x)\}}{\sqrt{x}}$ was introduced by Erdős and Freud in 1984. As a main result, we determine the value of $SX$ for perfect additive complements and further fix the infimum. We also give the absolute lower bound of $SX$ for additive complements.

Abstract:Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n > 0. We show that there is a numbering {a(i)}(n)(i=1)of the elements of A, a numbering {b(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of B and a numbering {c(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of C, such that all the sums a(i) + b(i) + c(i) (1 <= i <= n) are (pairwise) distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem is an essential result which can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.

Abstract:The notion of minimal complements was introduced by Nathanson in 2011. Since then, the existence or the inexistence of minimal complements of sets have been extensively studied. Recently, the study of inverse problems, i.e., which sets can or cannot occur as minimal complements has gained traction. For example, the works of Kwon, Alon--Kravitz--Larson, Burcroff--Luntzlara and also that of the authors, shed light on some of the questions in this direction. These works have focussed mainly on the group of integers, or on abelian groups. In this work, our motivation is two-fold: (i) to show some new results on the inverse problem, (ii) to concentrate on the inverse problem in not necessarily abelian groups. As a by-product, we obtain new results on non-minimal complements in the group of integers and more generally, in any finitely generated abelian group of positive rank and in any free abelian group of positive rank. Moreover, we show the existence of uncountably many subsets in such groups which are "robust" non-minimal complements.

Abstract:It is known that for any IP ⁎ set A and any sequence 〈xn〉n=1∞ in (N,+) , there exists a sum subsystem of 〈xn〉n=1∞ whose finite sums and finite products are in A . Similar results have been established for some other combinatorial notions. In this article, we introduce a general notion called completely I -large ⁎ sets, which can be IP ⁎ sets, central ⁎ sets or C ⁎ -sets when I is the corresponding ideal. And we establish a result for this notion to unify all known results. Furthermore, we apply this general result to another notion - quasi-central ⁎ sets to obtain corresponding combinatorial results.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

Abstract:We provide a sufficient condition for the sum of a finite number of complemented subspaces of a Banach space to be complemented. Under this condition a formula for a projection onto the sum is given. We also show that the condition is sharp (in a certain sense). As applications, we get (1) sufficient conditions for the complementability of sums of marginal subspaces in $L^p$ and sums of tensor powers of subspaces in a tensor power of a Banach space and (2) quantitative results on stability of the complementability property of the sum of linearly independent subspaces.

Abstract:In this paper we study some additive properties of subsets of the set $\nats$ of positive integers: A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called {\it $k$-summable} (where $k\in\ben$) if $A$ contains $\textstyle \big{\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq {1,2,...,k\} \big}$ for some $k$-term sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... < x_k$. We say $A \subseteq \nats$ is finite FS-big if $A$ is $k$-summable for each positive integer $k$. We say is $A \subseteq \nats$ is infinite FS-big if for each positive integer $k,$ $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F\leq k}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. We say $A\subseteq \nats $ is an IP-set if $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F<\infty}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. By the Finite Sums Theorem [5], the collection of all IP-sets is partition regular, i.e., if $A$ is an IP-set then for any finite partition of $A$, one cell of the partition is an IP-set. Here we prove that the collection of all finite FS-big sets is also partition regular. Let $\TM =011010011001011010... $ denote the Thue-Morse word fixed by the morphism $0\mapsto 01$ and $1\mapsto 10$. For each factor $u$ of $\TM$ we consider the set $\TM\big|_u\subseteq \nats$ of all occurrences of $u$ in $\TM$. In this note we characterize the sets $\TM\big|_u$ in terms of the additive properties defined above. Using the Thue-Morse word we show that the collection of all infinite FS-big sets is not partition regular.

Abstract:A given subset $A$ of natural numbers is said to be complete if every element of $\N$ is the sum of distinct terms taken from $A$. This topic is strongly connected to the knapsack problem which is known to be NP complete. The main goal of the paper is to study the structure of subset sums in a higher dimension. We show 'dense' sets and generalized arithmetic progrssions in subset sums of certain sets.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

Concerning the two new kinds of restricted sumsets $$L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n,\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n\}$$ and $$C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_i\in A_i\ (1\le i\le n),\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n,\ \text{and}\ a_n\not=a_1\}$$ recently introduced by the second author, when $G$ is the additive group of a field we obtain lower bounds for $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ and $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ via the polynomial method. Moreover, when $G$ is torsion-free and $A_1=\cdots=A_n$, we determine completely when $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ or $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ attains its lower bound.
