Abstract:One approach to understanding the. ne structure of initial segment complexity was introduced by Downey, Hirschfeldt and LaForte. They define X <=(K) Y to mean that (for all n) K( X vertical bar n) <= K(Y vertical bar n) + O( 1). The equivalence classes under this relation are the K-degrees. We prove that if X circle plus Y is 1-random, then X and Y have no upper bound in the K-degrees (hence, no join). We also prove that n-randomness is closed upward in the K-degrees. Our main tool is another structure intended to measure the degree of randomness of real numbers: the nu L-degrees. Unlike the K-degrees, many basic properties of the nu L-degrees are easy to prove. We show that X <=(K) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y, so some results can be transferred. The reverse implication is proved to fail. The same analysis is also done for <=(C), the analogue of <=(K) for plain Kolmogorov complexity.Two other interesting results are included. First, we prove that for any Z is an element of 2(omega), a 1-random real computable from a 1-Z-random real is automatically 1-Z-random. Second, we give a plain Kolmogorov complexity characterization of 1-randomness. This characterization is related to our proof that X <=(C) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y.

Abstract:A real is called integer-valued random if no integer-valued martingale can win arbitrarily much capital betting against it. A real is low for integer-valued randomness if no integer-valued martingale recursive in A can succeed on an integer-valued random real. We show that lowness for integer-valued randomness coincides with recursiveness, as is the case for computable randomness.

Abstract:We investigate the initial segment complexity of random reals. Let K(σ) denote prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity. A natural measure of the relative randomness of two reals α and β is to compare complexity K(α↾n) and K(β↾n). It is well-known that a real α is 1-random iff there is a constant c such that for all n, K(α↾n)⩾n−c. We ask the question, what else can be said about the initial segment complexity of random reals. Thus, we study the fine behaviour of K(α↾n) for random α. Following work of Downey, Hirschfeldt and LaForte, we say that α⩽Kβ iff there is a constant O(1) such that for all n, K(α↾n)⩽K(β↾n)+O(1). We call the equivalence classes under this measure of relative randomness K-degrees. We give proofs that there is a random real α so that limsupnK(α↾n)−K(Ω↾n)=∞ where Ω is Chaitin's random real. One is based upon (unpublished) work of Solovay, and the other exploits a new idea. Further, based on this new idea, we prove there are uncountably many K-degrees of random reals by proving that μ({β:β⩽Kα})=0. As a corollary to the proof we can prove there is no largest K-degree. Finally we prove that if n≠m then the initial segment complexities of the natural n- and m-random sets (namely Ω∅(n−1) and Ω∅(m−1)) are different. The techniques introduced in this paper have already found a number of other applications.

Abstract:We define $\Psi$-autoreducible sets given an autoreduction procedure $\Psi$. Then, we show that for any $\Psi$, a measurable class of $\Psi$-autoreducible sets has measure zero. Using this, we show that classes of cototal, uniformly introenumerable, introenumerable, and hyper-cototal enumeration degrees all have measure zero. By analyzing the arithmetical complexity of the classes of cototal sets and cototal enumeration degrees, we show that weakly 2-random sets cannot be cototal and weakly 3-random sets cannot be of cototal enumeration degree. Then, we see that this result is optimal by showing that there exists a 1-random cototal set and a 2-random set of cototal enumeration degree. For uniformly introenumerable degrees and introenumerable degrees, we utilize $\Psi$-autoreducibility again to show the optimal result that no weakly 3-random sets can have introenumerable enumeration degree. We also show that no 1-random set can be introenumerable.

Abstract:One of the main lines of research in algorithmic randomness is that of lowness notions. Given a randomness notion R, we ask for which sequences A does relativization to A leave R unchanged (i.e., R^A = R)? Such sequences are call low for R. This question extends to a pair of randomness notions R and S, where S is weaker: for which A is S^A still weaker than R? In the last few years, many results have characterized the sequences that are low for randomness by their low computational strength. A few results have also given measure-theoretic characterizations of low sequences. For example, Kjos-Hanssen proved that A is low for Martin-Löf randomness if and only if every A-c.e. open set of measure less than 1 can be covered by a c.e. open set of measure less than 1. In this paper, we give a series of results showing that a wide variety of lowness notions can be expressed in a similar way, i.e., via the ability to cover open sets of a certain type by open sets of some other type. This provides a unified framework that clarifies the study of lowness for randomness notions, and allows us to give simple proofs of a number of known results. We also use this framework to prove new results, including showing that the classes Low(MLR;SR) and Low(W2R;SR) coincide, answering a question of Nies. Other applications include characterizations of highness notions, a broadly applicable explanation for why low for randomness is the same as low for tests, and a simple proof that Low(W2R;S)=Low(MLR;S), where S is the class of Martin-Löf, computable, or Schnorr random sequences. The final section gives characterizations of lowness notions using summable functions and convergent measure machines instead of open covers. We finish with a simple proof of a result of Nies, that Low(MLR) = Low(MLR; CR).

Abstract:This paper concerns the expansion of the real ordered additive group by a predicate for a subset of $[0,1]$ whose base-$r$ representations are recognized by a Büchi automaton. In the case that this predicate is closed, a dichotomy is established for when this expansion is interdefinable with the structure $(\mathbb{R},<,+,0,r^{-\mathbb{N}})$ for some $r \in \mathbb{N}_{>1}$. In the case that the closure of the predicate has Hausdorff dimension less than $1$, the dichotomy further characterizes these expansions of $(\mathbb{R},<,+,0,1)$ by when they have NIP and NTP$_2$, which is precisely when the closure of the predicate has Hausdorff dimension $0$.

In this paper, we first define a family of random entire functions, which includes Gaussian, Rademacher and Steinhaus entire functions. We prove that, for almost all functions in the family and for any constant C >1, there exist a constant r(0) = r(0)(omega) and a set E subset of [e, infinity) of finite logarithmic measure such that, for r > r(0) and r (sic) E, | log M(r, f) - N(r, 0, f(omega))| <= (C/A)(1/B) log(1/B) log M(r, f) + log log M(r, f), a.s. where A, B are constants, M(r, f) is the maximum modulus and N(r, 0, f) is the integrated zero-counting function of f. As a by-product of our main results, we prove Nevanlinna's second main theorem for random entire functions. Thus, the characteristic function of almost all functions in the family is bounded above by an integrated counting function, rather than by two integrated counting functions as in the classical Nevanlinna theory. For instance, we show that, for almost all Gaussian entire functions f omega and for any epsilon > 0, there is r0 such that, for r > r0, T (r, f) <= N(r, 0, f omega) + (1/2 + epsilon) log T (r, f ).

Abstract:Computably Lipschitz reducibility (noted as ≤cl for short), was suggested as a measure of relative randomness. We say α≤clβ if α is Turing reducible to β with oracle use on x bounded by x+c. Abstract:In this article we call a sequence $(a_n)_n$ of elements of a metric space nearly computably Cauchy if for every strictly increasing computable function $r:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$ the sequence $(d(a_{r(n+1)},a_{r(n)}))_n$ converges computably to $0$. We show that there exists a strictly increasing sequence of rational numbers that is nearly computably Cauchy and unbounded. Then we call a real number $\alpha$ nearly computable if there exists a computable sequence $(a_n)_n$ of rational numbers that converges to $\alpha$ and is nearly computably Cauchy. It is clear that every computable real number is nearly computable, and it follows from a result by Downey and LaForte (2002) that there exists a nearly computable and left-computable number that is not computable. We observe that the set of nearly computable real numbers is a real closed field and closed under computable real functions with open domain, but not closed under arbitrary computable real functions. Among other things we strengthen results by Hoyrup (2017) and by Stephan and Wu (2005) by showing that any nearly computable real number that is not computable is weakly $1$-generic (and, therefore, hyperimmune and not Martin-Löf random) and strongly Kurtz random (and, therefore, not $K$-trivial), and we strengthen a result by Downey and LaForte (2002) by showing that no promptly simple set can be Turing reducible to a nearly computable real number.

Abstract:A matroid $M$ is an ordered pair $(E,I)$, where $E$ is a finite set called the ground set and a collection $I\subset 2^{E}$ called the independent sets which satisfy the conditions: (i) $\emptyset \in I$, (ii) $I'\subset I \in I$ implies $I'\in I$, and (iii) $I_1,I_2 \in I$ and $|I_1| < |I_2|$ implies that there is an $e\in I_2$ such that $I_1\cup \{e\} \in I$. The rank $rank(M)$ of a matroid $M$ is the maximum size of an independent set. We say that a matroid $M=(E,I)$ is representable over the reals if there is a map $\varphi \colon E \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{rank(M)}$ such that $I\in I$ if and only if $\varphi(I)$ forms a linearly independent set. We study the problem of matroid realizability over the reals. Given a matroid $M$, we ask whether there is a set of points in the Euclidean space representing $M$. We show that matroid realizability is $\exists \mathbb R$-complete, already for matroids of rank 3. The complexity class $\exists \mathbb R$ can be defined as the family of algorithmic problems that is polynomial-time is equivalent to determining if a multivariate polynomial with integers coefficients has a real root. Our methods are similar to previous methods from the literature. Yet, the result itself was never pointed out and there is no proof readily available in the language of computer science.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of real rank zero for inclusions of C$^*$-algebras. After showing that our definition has many equivalent characterisations, we offer a complete description of the commutative case. We provide permanence and K-theoretic properties of inclusions of real rank zero and prove that a large class of full infinite inclusions have real rank zero.

Abstract:We establish an equivalence between two important random ensembles of linear codes: random linear codes (RLCs) and random Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. Specifically, we show that these models exhibit identical behavior with respect to key combinatorial properties, such as list-decodability and list-recoverability, when the alphabet size is sufficiently large. We introduce monotone-decreasing local coordinate-wise linear (LCL) properties, a new class of properties designed for studying the large alphabet regime. This class encompasses list-decodability, list-recoverability, and their average-weight variants. We develop a framework to analyze these properties and prove a threshold theorem for RLCs. Specifically, we identify a threshold rate $ R_P $ for any LCL property $P$, where RLCs are likely to satisfy $P$ when $ R < R_P $ and unlikely to do so when $ R > R_P $. We extend this threshold theorem to random RS codes and prove that they share the same threshold $ R_P $, thereby establishing the equivalence between the two ensembles and enabling unified analysis of list-recoverability and related properties. Applying our framework, we compute the threshold rate for list-decodability, proving that both random RS codes and RLCs achieve the generalized Singleton bound. This recovers recent results of Alrabiah, Guruswami, and Li (2023) via elementary methods. Additionally, we provide an upper bound on the list-recoverability threshold and conjecture that this bound is tight. Our approach suggests a plausible pathway for proving this conjecture and thus pinpointing the list-recoverability parameters of both models.

Abstract:It is argued that realism and true randomness are fully compatible. Realistic true random events are acts of pure creation that obey strict laws, but do not necessarily satisfy Kolmogorov's axioms of probabilities. Realistic true randomness is some sort of nondeterministic force, or propensity of physical systems to manifest such and such properties under such and such conditions. Realistic random events reflect preexisting properties, as required by realism, simply the reflection is not deterministic; still, the preexisting properties determine the propensities of the different possible events. It is argued that deterministic extensions of quantum physics are necessarily incompatible with special relativity. Hence, from today's violations of Bell's inequalities one can conclude that all future physics theories will display true randomness as does quantum physics. It is argued that accepting true randomness and realism leads to new questions with interesting answers, allowing one 1) to study nonlocality in configurations with many independent sources and 2) to bound how much free will is needed for a proper violation of Bell's inequality.
