Abstract:Non-renormalizable Newton maps are rigid. More precisely, we prove that their Julia sets carry no invariant line fields and that a topological conjugacy between them is equivalent to a quasiconformal conjugacy.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a rational map with a Cantor Julia set carries no invariant line field on its Julia set. It follows that a structurally stable rational map with a Cantor Julia set is hyperbolic.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a family of rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles and show that every rational map whose Julia set is a Cantor set of circles must be topologically conjugate to one map in this family on their corresponding Julia sets. In particular, we give the specific expressions of some rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, but they are not topologically conjugate to any McMullen maps on their Julia sets. Moreover, some non-hyperbolic rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles are also constructed.

Abstract:In this article, we study the topology and bifurcations of the moduli space M-3 of cubic Newton maps. It's a subspace of the moduli space of cubic rational maps, carrying the Riemann orbifold structure ((C)over-bar, (2, 3, infinity)).We prove two results: The boundary of the unique unbounded hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc and the boundaries of all other hyperbolic components are Jordan curves; The Head's angle map is surjective and monotone. The fibers of this map are characterized completely. The first result is a moduli space analogue of the first author's dynamical regularity theorem [37]. The second result confirms a conjecture of Tan Lei. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Inc.
Rigidity of J-rotational rational maps and critical quasicircle maps

Abstract:We present a number of rigidity results concerning holomorphic dynamical systems admitting rotation quasicircles. Firstly, we show the absence of line fields on the Julia set of any rational map that is geometrically finite away from a number of rotation quasicircles with bounded type rotation number. As an application, we prove combinatorial rigidity associated to the problem of degeneration of Herman rings of the simplest configuration. Secondly, we extend a result of de Faria and de Melo on the $C^{1+\alpha}$ rigidity of critical circle maps with bounded type rotation number to a larger class of dynamical objects, namely critical quasicircle maps. Unlike critical circle maps, critical quasicircle maps may have imbalanced inner and outer criticalities. As a consequence, we prove dynamical universality and exponential convergence of renormalization towards a horseshoe attractor.

Abstract:In this paper we prove existence of matings between a large class of renormalizable cubic polynomials with one fixed critical point and another cubic polynomial having two fixed critical points. The resulting mating is a Newton map. Our result is the first part towards a conjecture by Tan Lei, stating that all (cubic) Newton maps can be described as matings or captures.

Abstract:The dynamical classification of rational maps is a central concern of holomorphic dynamics. Much progress has been made, especially on the classification of polynomials and some approachable one-parameter families of rational maps; the goal of finding a classification of general rational maps is so far elusive. Newton maps (rational maps that arise when applying Newton's method to a polynomial) form a most natural family to be studied from the dynamical perspective. Using Thurston's characterization and rigidity theorem, a complete combinatorial classification of postcritically finite Newton maps is given in terms of a finite connected graph satisfying certain explicit conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of Newton maps for arbitrary polynomials. Let $p$ be an arbitrary polynomial with at least three distinct roots, and $f$ be its Newton map. It is shown that the boundary $\partial B$ of any immediate root basin $B$ of $f$ is locally connected. Moreover, $\partial B$ is a Jordan curve if and only if ${\rm deg}(f|_B)=2$. This implies that the boundaries of all components of root basins, for all polynomials' Newton maps, from the viewpoint of topology, are tame.

Abstract:Conformal submersions are generalizations of Riemannian submersions where the differential of the submersion map is a conformal isometry when restricted to the horizontal distribution. Riemannian submersions have been instrumental in the construction of new Riemannian metrics from existing ones. Therefore, being generalizations of Riemannian submersions, conformal submersions are potential tools for constructing new examples of (special) Riemannian manifolds. A conformal submersion is said to be rigid if it reduces to a Riemannian submersion up to homothety. In this paper, we study curvature conditions that force conformal submersions to be rigid. Moreover, under suitable circumstances, using these rigidity criteria for conformal submersions, we conclude the rigidity of certain quasi-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:We show that there exist contact isotopies of the standard contact sphere whose time-1 maps do not have any translated points which are optimally close to the identity in the Shelukhin-Hofer distance. This proves the sharpness of a theorem of Shelukhin on the existence of translated points for contact isotopies of Liouville fillable contact manifolds with small enough Shelukhin-Hofer norm.

Abstract:We discuss questions by Mostow \cite{Mo1}, Bers \cite{B} and Krushkal \cite{Kr1, Kr2} about uniqueness of a conformal or spherical CR structure on the sphere at infinity $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ of symmetric rank one space $H_\mathbb{F}^n$ over division algebra $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}\,,\mathbb{C}\,,\mathbb{H}\,,\text{or}\,\, \mathbb{O} $ compatible with the action of a discrete group $G\subset\operatorname{Isom}H_\mathbb{F}^n$. Introducing a nilpotent Sierpiński carpet with a positive Lebesgue measure in the nilpotent geometry in $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n\setminus\{\infty\}$ and its stretching, we construct a non-rigid discrete $\mathbb{F}$-hyperbolic groups $G\subset\operatorname{Isom}H_\mathbb{F}^n$ whose non-trivial deformations are induced by $G$-equivariant homeomorphisms of the space. Here we consider two situations: either the limit set $\Lambda(G)$ is the whole sphere at infinity $\partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ or restrictions of such non-trivial deformations to components of the discontinuity set $\Omega(G)\subset \partial H_\mathbb{F}^n$ are given by restrictions of $\mathbb{F}$-hyperbolic isometries. In both cases the demonstrated non-rigidity is related to non-ergodic dynamics of the discrete group action on the limit set which could be the whole sphere at infinity.

Abstract:Chaotic hyperbolic dynamical systems enjoy a surprising degree of rigidity, a fact which is well known in the mathematics community but perhaps less so in theoretical physics circles. Low-dimensional hyperbolic systems are either conjugate to linear automorphisms, that is, dynamically equivalent to the Arnold cat map and its variants, or their hyperbolic structure is not smooth. We illustrate this dichotomy using a family of analytic maps, for which we show by means of numerical simulations that the corresponding hyperbolic structure is not smooth, thereby providing an example for a global mechanism which produces non-smooth phase space structures in an otherwise smooth dynamical system.

Abstract:In this note we prove three rigidity results for Einstein manifolds with bounded covering geometry. (1) An almost flat manifold $(M,g)$ must be flat if it is Einstein, i.e. $\operatorname{Ric}_g=\lambda g$ for some real number $\lambda$. (2) A compact Einstein manifolds with a non-vanishing and almost maximal volume entropy is hyperbolic. (3) A compact Einstein manifold admitting a uniform local rewinding almost maximal volume is isometric to a space form.
