Abstract:The ascending chain condition on principal ideals (ACCP) is almost always complementary to atomicity within integral domains: in fact, Cohn initially stated that these two conditions were equivalent. This assertion has been shown to be false, however most counterexamples require technical algebraic constructions. In 2017, Gotti conjectured that for every $q$ in the set $S := ((0, 1) \cap \mathbb{Q}) \setminus {\mathbb{N}}^{-1}_{> 1}$, atomicity ascends from the exponentially cyclic Puiseux monoid $M_q$ to its monoid algebra over the field of rationals. If this conjecture were true, it would provide an extremely wide class of atomic domains of Krull dimension one not satisfying the ACCP, and so would be perhaps the simplest possible such examples. Bu et al. recently proved that the monoid algebra $\mathbb{Q} \left[M_{3/4} \right]$ is atomic, marking the first progress towards settling this conjecture. We strengthen this result and prove that $\mathbb{Q}[M_q]$ is atomic for all $q \in S$ having an odd denominator.

One-dimensional monoid algebras and ascending chains of principal ideals

Abstract:An integral domain $R$ is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit of $R$ factors into irreducibles, while $R$ satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal ideals if every ascending chain of principal ideals of $R$ stabilizes. It is well known and not hard to verify that if an integral domain satisfies the ACCP, then it must be atomic. The converse does not hold in general, but examples are hard to come by and most of them are the result of crafty and technical constructions. Sporadic constructions of such atomic domains have appeared in the literature in the last five decades, including the first example of a finite-dimensional atomic monoid algebra not satisfying the ACCP recently constructed by the second and third authors. Here we construct the first known one-dimensional monoid algebras satisfying the almost ACCP but not the ACCP (the almost ACCP is a notion weaker than the ACCP but still stronger than atomicity). Although the two constructions we provide here are rather technical, the corresponding monoid algebras are perhaps the most elementary known examples of atomic domains not satisfying the ACCP.

Abstract:Factoring ideals in integral domains is a central topic in multiplicative ideal theory. In the present paper we study monoids of ideals and consider factorizations of ideals into multiplicatively irreducible ideals. The focus is on the monoid of nonzero divisorial ideals and on the monoid of $v$-invertible divisorial ideals in weakly Krull Mori domains. Under suitable algebraic finiteness conditions we establish arithmetical finiteness results, in particular for the monotone catenary degree and for the structure of sets of lengths and of their unions.

Abstract:If a finitely generated monoid M is defined by a finite number of degree-preserving relations, then it has linear growth if and only if it can be decomposed into a finite disjoint union of subsets (which we call "sandwiches") of the form $a<w>b$, where $a,b,w$ are elements of $M$ and $<w>$ denotes the monogenic semigroup generated by $w$. Moreover, the decomposition can be chosen in such a way that the sandwiches are either singletons or "free" ones (meaning that all elements $a w^n b$ in each sandwich are pairwise different). So, the minimal number of free sandwiches in such a decomposition is a numerical invariant of a homogeneous (and conjecturally, non-homogeneous) finitely presented monoid of linear growth.

Realization of monoids with countable sum

Abstract:For every infinite cardinal number $\kappa$, $\kappa$-monoids and their realization have recently been introduced and studied by Nazemian and Smertnig. A $\kappa$-monoid $H$ has a realization to a ring $R$ if there exists an element $x \in H$ such that $H$ is $\aleph_1 ^{-}$-braided over $\text{add}(\aleph_0 x)$, and $\text{add}(\aleph_0 x)$, as $\aleph_0$-monoid, has a realization to $R$. Furthermore, $H$ has a realization to hereditary rings if there exists an element $x \in H$ such that $H$ is braided over $\text{add}(x)$. These prompt an investigation into when $\aleph_0$-monoids have realizations. In this paper, we discuss the realization of $\aleph_0$-monoids and provide a complete characterization for the realization of two-generated ones in hereditary Von Neumann regular rings.

Small monoids generating varieties with uncountably many subvarieties

Abstract:An algebra that generates a variety with uncountably many subvarieties is said to be of type $2^{\aleph_0}$. We show that the Rees quotient monoid $M(aabb)$ of order ten is of type $2^{\aleph_0}$, thereby affirmatively answering a recent question of Glasson. As a corollary, we exhibit a new example of type $2^{\aleph_0}$ monoid of order six, which turns out to be minimal and the first of its kind that is finitely based.

On Bernstein algebras satisfying chain conditions II

Abstract:Following a previous work with Boudi, we continue to investigate Bernstein algebras satisfying chain conditions. First, it is shown that a Bernstein algebra $(A, \omega)$ with ascending or descending chain condition on subalgebras is finite-dimensional. We also prove that $A$ is Nœtherian (Artinian) if and only if its barideal $N=\ker(\omega)$ is. Next, as a generalization of Jordan and nuclear Bernstein algebras, we study whether a Nœtherian (Artinian) Bernstein algebra $A$ with a locally nilpotent barideal $N$ is finite-dimensional. The response is affirmative in the Nœtherian case, unlike in the Artinian case. This question is closely related to a result by Zhevlakov on general locally nilpotent nonassociative algebras that are Nœtherian, for which we give a new proof. In particular, we derive that a commutative nilalgebra of nilindex 3 which is Nœtherian or Artinian is finite-dimensional. Finally, we improve and extend some results of Micali and Ouattara to the Nœtherian and Artinian cases.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to study the possible monoids appearing as the associated monoids of the initial algebra of a finitely generated homogeneous $\Bbbk$-subalgebra of a polynomial ring $\Bbbk[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. Clearly, any affine monoid can be realized since the initial algebra of the affine monoid $\Bbbk$-algebra is itself. On the other hand, the initial algebra of a finitely generated homogeneous $\Bbbk$-algebra is not necessarily finitely generated. In this paper, we provide a new family of non-finitely generated monoids which can be realized as the initial algebras of finitely generated homogeneous $\Bbbk$-algebras. Moreover, we also provide an example of a non-finitely generated monoid which cannot be realized as the initial algebra of any finitely generated homogeneous $\Bbbk$-algebra.

Abstract:The left and right diameters of a monoid are topological invariants defined in terms of suprema of lengths of derivation sequences with respect to finite generating sets for the universal left or right congruences. We compute these parameters for the endomorphism monoid $End(C)$ of a chain $C$. Specifically, if $C$ is infinite then the left diameter of $End(C)$ is 2, while the right diameter is either 2 or 3, with the latter equal to 2 precisely when $C$ is a quotient of $C{\setminus}\{z\}$ for some endpoint $z$. If $C$ is finite then so is $End(C),$ in which case the left and right diameters are 1 (if $C$ is non-trivial) or 0.

Topological finiteness properties of monoids. Part 2: special monoids, one-relator monoids, amalgamated free products, and HNN extensions

Abstract:We show how topological methods developed in a previous article can be applied to prove new results about topological and homological finiteness properties of monoids. A monoid presentation is called special if the right-hand side of each relation is equal to $1$. We prove results which relate the finiteness properties of a monoid defined by a special presentation with those of its group of units. Specifically we show that the monoid inherits the finiteness properties $F_n$ and $FP_n$ from its group of units. We also obtain results which relate the geometric and cohomological dimensions of such a monoid to those of its group of units. We apply these results to prove a Lyndon's Identity Theorem for one-relator monoids of the form $\langle A \mid r=1 \rangle$. In particular we show that all such monoids are of type $F_{\infty}$ (and $FP_{\infty}$), and that when $r$ is not a proper power, then the monoid has geometric and cohomological dimension at most $2$. The first of these results resolves an important case of a question of Kobayashi from 2000 on homological finiteness properties of one-relator monoids. We also show how our topological approach can be used to prove results about the closure properties of various homological and topological finiteness properties for amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions of monoids. To prove these results we introduce new methods for constructing equivariant classifying spaces for monoids, as well as developing a Bass-Serre theory for free constructions of monoids.

On the ascent of atomicity to monoid algebras

Abstract:A commutative cancellative monoid is atomic if every non-invertible element factors into irreducibles (also called atoms), while an integral domain is atomic if its multiplicative monoid is atomic. Back in the eighties, Gilmer posed the question of whether the fact that a torsion-free monoid $M$ and an integral domain $R$ are both atomic implies that the monoid algebra $R[M]$ of $M$ over $R$ is also atomic. In general this is not true, and the first negative answer to this question was given by Roitman in 1993: he constructed an atomic integral domain whose polynomial extension is not atomic. More recently, Coykendall and the first author constructed finite-rank torsion-free atomic monoids whose monoid algebras over certain finite fields are not atomic. Still, the ascent of atomicity from finite-rank torsion-free monoids to their corresponding monoid algebras over fields of characteristic zero is an open problem. Coykendall and the first author also constructed an infinite-rank torsion-free atomic monoid whose monoid algebras (over any integral domain) are not atomic. As the primary result of this paper, we construct a rank-one torsion-free atomic monoid whose monoid algebras (over any integral domain) are not atomic. To do so, we introduce and study a methodological construction inside the class of rank-one torsion-free monoids that we call lifting, which consists in embedding a given monoid into another monoid that is often more tractable from the arithmetic viewpoint. For instance, the embedding in the lifting construction preserves the ascending chain condition on principal ideals and the existence of maximal common divisors.

Higher Dimensional Chain Conditions

Abstract:We investigate higher dimensional chain conditions, where the largeness notion is given by Fubini products of a given ideal. From strong saturation properties of an ideal, we derive abstractly versions of higher dimensional $\Delta$-system lemma, which imply many posets, including any finite support iteration of $\sigma$-centered posets and measure algebras, satisfy the higher dimensional chain conditions. We then show that if a poset satisfies a strengthening of the $\sigma$-finite chain condition by Horn and Tarski, then it satisfies higher dimensional chain conditions. As an application, we derive Ramsey-theoretic consequences, namely various partition hypotheses as studied by Bannister, Bergfalk, Moore and Todorcevic, from the existence of ideals satisfying strong chain conditions.

Abstract:Let S ⊂ N 0 be a numerical monoid and let , resp. , denote the power monoid, resp. the restricted power monoid, of S , that is the set of all finite nonempty subsets of S , resp. the set of all finite nonempty subsets of S containing 0, with set addition as operation. The arithmetic of power monoids received some attention in recent literature. We complement these investigations by studying algebraic properties of power monoids, such as their prime spectrum. Moreover, we show that almost all elements of are irreducible (i.e., they are not proper sumsets).

Abstract:Recent investigations on the catenary degrees of numerical monoids have demonstrated that this invariant is a powerful tool in understanding the factorization theory of this class of monoids. Although useful, the catenary degree is largely not sensitive to the lengths of factorizations of an element. In this paper, we study the monotone catenary degree of numerical monoids, which is a variant of catenary degree that requires chains run through factorization lengths monotonically. In general, the monotone catenary is greater than or equal to the catenary degree. We begin by providing an important class of monoids (arithmetical numerical monoids) for which monotone catenary degree is equal to the catenary degree. Conversely, we provide several classes of embedding dimension 3 numerical monoids where monotone catenary degree is strictly greater. We conclude by showing that this difference can grow arbitrarily large.
