Abstract:Temperature stress is the main problem faced by ultra-long concrete structure, how to accurately simulate the structural temperature effect and take effective measures to control the crack generation is the key to deal with this kind of problem. Based on the finite element analysis and practical engineering application of ultra-long concrete structures, the calculation method of structural temperature difference and the determination principle of key parameters were proposed, and a new method of crack-control was also introduced. The analysis shows that the finite element modeling can reveal temperature variation effect effectively and reasonably. The proposing floor elevation zone can weaken the impact of temperature stress, and avoid ultra-long concrete structure cracking.

Abstract:Frost damage is an important issue for service life evaluation of concrete structures in cold regions. In fact, the frost action can have both strengthening and damaging effects on the mechanical properties of concrete material, depending on several environmental and material factors, and this complexity makes the damage evaluation more difficult in the real environment. This paper aims to develop a unified model through a micro‐mesoscale approach, which can quantitatively estimate and distinguish the strengthening/damaging effects by frost action. At microscale, the model takes into account the prestressed condition by internal pore pressures, as well as the change of effective elastic properties when ice forms in micropores. At mesoscale, the mechanical contribution of ice and liquid inside mesocracks is considered. Finally, the static mechanical behaviors of concrete under different situations are simulated based on a two‐dimensional discrete model rigid body spring method. The simulated results can clearly distinguish and separate each strengthening and damaging effect. The microice may enlarge the strengths by 50–110% while the mesocracks may reduce the strength by 40–80%, the effect of ice in mesocracks is also discussed. The final apparent performance depends on which strengthening/damaging effect is more dominant and is mainly controlled by the entrained air amount. Previous experiments are also used to verify the proposed model, and they are found in a good agreement.

Abstract:The present study concerns the quantification of the environmental factors influencing the durability of concrete structures under on-site frost environments, including the number of freeze-thaw cycles, average freezing rate and time proportional coefficient of water saturation in concrete. A statistical method is put forward to get the on-site freeze-thaw cycles by using the average annual number of negative-temperature days as an index. In addition, a practical formula is obtained to predict the natural freeze-thaw cycles accordingly. Then, a conceptual approach considering the time proportion of concrete in saturated condition is proposed for general atmospheric environment. According to the average freezing rate in the freezing and thawing, the proportional coefficient of concrete damage in different freeze-thaw environments is obtained. Based on the aforementioned factors, relationship between different freeze-thaw environmental conditions is established. As an example, procedure of predicting the equivalent number of laboratory freeze-thaw cycles from on-site freeze-thaw cycles is given. Thus, the relationship between on-site environment and indoor experiment is established.

Abstract:The effects of minimum temperature and salt solution on frost resistance property of normal performance concrete(NPC)with different water cement ratio are analyzed through the measuring of mass loss and dynamic elastic modulus loss of the specimen.Three different environments are considered in the freezing-thawing test,the standard pure water environment,the 5% sodium chloride solution environment and the -10 ℃ freez- ing environment.The results show that the temperature amplitude has a significant effect on the anti-frost property.The damage increases as the temperature goes down,and in the meantime the water cement ratio has a greater influence on the performance of specimen.During the -10 ℃ freezing environment,there is scarcely scaling phenomenon,but in the 5% sodium chloride solution environment,both the dynamic elastic modu- lus and mass of the specimen decrease rapidly.

Abstract:Frost damage is a common durability problem for concrete structures in cold and wet regions, and in many cases, the frost damage is coupled with fatigue loadings such as the traffic loads on bridge decks or pavements. In this paper, to investigate the basic fatigue behavior of concrete materials affected by frost damage, a mesoscale approach based on Rigid Body Spring Method (RBSM) has been developed, of which the concrete material can be divided into three parts: mortar, coarse aggregate and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between them. First, the cyclic constitutive laws are developed at normal and shear directions for mortar and ITZ, and verified with the existing experimental data in compression and tension fatigue. Then, several levels of frost damage are introduced by different numbers of freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs), and finally, the static tests and fatigue tests are conducted using the frost damaged concrete. The simulation results on the static strength and fatigue life show a good agreement with experimental data, and found that as the frost damage level (irreversible plastic deformation) increases, not only the static strength, but also the fatigue life at each stress level will decrease. The S-N curves of frost damaged concrete still follow a linear relationship but with bigger slopes, and the frost damaged concrete will become more ductile under fatigue loadings.

Abstract:Electrical measurements are promising for evaluation of frost damage of concrete, but the index is still controversial. In this paper, to propose an efficient index, various electrical characteristics were examined to correlate them with the mechanical property degradation of meso-scale mortar samples due to combined effects of sodium chloride and freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). While the electrical responses of specimens were measured during FTCs, the mechanical properties were obtained from three-point bending tests after FTCs. Typical microstructural change after the damage was also analyzed by using a water absorption test. The results showed that no clear degradation tendency was observed for electrical resistivity at the lowest temperature, the activation energy or the freezing/thawing point change with the FTCs. The reduction in electrical resistivity at reference temperature has a consistent tendency with that of elastic modulus and flexural strength, thus can be an efficient index for quantitative frost damage evaluation. The change due to salt-frost damage is mainly due to the increase of connectivity rather than porosity.

Abstract:In the pursuit of sustainable construction practices, the utilization of recycled concrete has emerged as a pivotal strategy, distinguished by its commitment to resource conservation and environmental stewardship. Nevertheless, the inherent micro-porosity and micro-cracking within the old mortar of recycled concrete may lead to weak bonding performance at the interfacial transition zone, culminating in diminished strength, reduced density, and elevated water absorption rates compared to conventional concrete, which critically impairs its performance in cold climates subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. Consequently, this paper provides a structured examination of the frost resistance properties of recycled concrete subjected to freeze-thaw cycling. Initially, the study delineates the mechanisms of frost-induced damage in recycled concrete by synthesizing the degradation pathways observed in both conventional and recycled concrete during freeze-thaw exposure. Subsequently, a detailed analysis is conducted to identify the pivotal factors affecting frost resistance, encompassing the proportion and moisture affinity of recycled aggregates, the addition of silica fume and fly ash, the water-to-cement ratio, and the degree of water saturation. In the final segment, the study compiles and reviews the strategies for bolstering the frost resistance of recycled concrete, including the incorporation of air-entraining admixtures, fiber reinforcement, and aggregate modification approaches. The objective of this research is to offer a thorough comprehension of recycled concrete, with a concentration on the mechanisms of frost damage, the critical determinants of frost resistance, and interventions to augment its resilience against freezing conditions. On this basis, the present paper, in conjunction with the characteristics and current research status of recycled concrete, proposes recommendations for the application of recycled concrete in cold regions. This review is anticipated to facilitate researchers in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the freeze-thaw characteristics of recycled concrete and the measures to enhance its frost resistance. Furthermore, it aims to assist engineering and technical personnel in selecting appropriate treatment methods to improve the frost resistance of recycled concrete in cold regions, thereby promoting the practical engineering application of recycled concrete in such areas.

Abstract:This paper is a meta-analysis of recent domestic and foreign research on freezing-thawing effects on concrete durability. The main theories on the mechanisms of freeze-thaw damage to concrete are introduced: the hydrostatic pressure theory, the osmotic pressure theory, the critical water saturation degree theory, the dual mechanism theory, and the micro-ice-crystal lens model theory. The influence laws of freezing-thawing on the mechanical properties of concrete are summarized, and countermeasures to improve concrete durability in freezing-thawing circumstances are presented. This work provides valuable references for future engineering constructions in cold regions.

Abstract:Freeze–thaw damage significantly contributes to the degradation of concrete structures. A critical precondition for concrete to experience frost damage is reaching its critical saturation level. This study conducted freeze–thaw experiments on concrete specimens under both open and sealed moisture conditions to elucidate the mechanisms of freeze–thaw damage and the pivotal role of moisture. The research assessed concrete’s water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and compressive strength under restricted water conditions to study damage accumulation patterns. The findings indicate that implementing water limitation measures during freeze–thaw cycles can regulate concrete’s water absorption rate, reduce the loss of ultrasonic pulse velocity, and minimize strength degradation, with an observed strength increase of up to 36.22%. Consequently, these measures protect concrete materials from severe frost damage. Furthermore, a predictive model for concrete freeze–thaw deterioration was established based on regression analysis and relative dynamic modulus theory, confirming the critical role of water limitation in extending the service life of concrete structures in cold regions.

Abstract:Existing concrete in cold or coastal regions is attacked by chloride penetration under freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). The combined deterioration process accelerate the damage evolution of concrete and reduces the service life of concrete structures. This paper presents a mesoscopic numerical model, which is 2-D and 3-phases, to investigate the mechanism of chloride diffusion under FTCs in a quantitative manner. Unlike most of existing models, the present model considers the FTCs-induced damage affected chloride diffusion by adopting a time-dependent variable of porosity, which can not only reflect how freeze-thaw action affects the concrete pore structure, but also couple the freeze-thaw process together with the chloride diffusion process at time scale. The reliability of the proposed model is validated against a third-party experiment. Based on the obtained concentration distribution profiles, a series of significant influencing factors, i.e., w/c ratio, ITZ effects, external chloride concentration, aggregate volume fraction and inner temperature are clarified. A grey relational analysis is further conducted to rank the correlative degrees of influencing factors on diffusivity of chloride under FTCs. The findings of this study can bring insights to the preparation technique of concrete in cold or coastal regions as well as the durability prediction on existing concrete structures suffering chloride attack and freeze-thaw action.

Abstract:Once ice forms in highly saturated concrete material, internal tensile stress will be generated and causes damage to the material, which is a serious problem for concrete structures in cold and wet regions. On one hand, each component (porous body, ice and liquid) should satisfy the compatibility of stress and strain, which has been discussed by the poromechanical theories. On the other hand, if some empty voids exist, the hydraulic pressure will release when liquid water escapes from the expanded area according to Darcy's law. Recent closed freeze-thaw tests on the saturated mortar showed a consistent tendency: as the number of freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) increases, the deformation changes from the expansion to the contraction. In order to make clear the physical and mechanical changes during this process, a more comprehensive hydraulic model is developed, which combines both the mechanisms mentioned above. The estimated strain behavior by this model is in a good agreement with experimental measurements, and also, it has good potential and is more flexible to be applied to different cases such as different saturation degrees and cooling rates. The permeability change can be also considered in this model as a reflection of frost damage level.

Abstract:The structural performance under freezing and thawing environment shows severe deterioration, which has drawn large attention recently. Usually the deterioration owing to frost damage could attribute to two parts: the degradation of concrete mechanical properties and the degradation of bond properties between concrete and rebars. In this paper, a systematic study was accomplished and a mull-scale structural evaluation methodology was proposed. The macroscale degradations of both concrete and bond properties were simulated and modeled using a mesoscale discrete analytical approach - Rigid Body Spring Method. The proposed constitutive relationships for damaged concrete and bond properties were adopted in Finite Element Method to conduct structural analysis with considering the temperature history during the freezing-thawing process. Finally, experiment was conducted to verify the stated mull-scale methodology where satisfactory agreements were found between the experiment and FEM analysis.

Abstract:With the introduction of green building, solid waste utilization has become a key research focus in civil engineering. Recycled concrete technology plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of the concrete industry. However, its durability in cold regions remains a pressing challenge for engineers. This paper reviews domestic and international studies to summarize the performance and degradation mechanisms of recycled concrete under freeze-thaw cycles, focusing on four factors: recycled aggregate proportion, freeze-thaw cycle conditions, water-to-cement ratio, and admixtures. Evaluation systems for frost resistance of recycled concrete are also summarized. Finally, improvement measures for enhancing the frost resistance of recycled concrete are proposed, providing a theoretical basis for further research and engineering applications in this field.

Abstract:The durability of concrete on the action of two damage factors of freeze-thaw cycle and preloading compressive stress was investigated.37 concrete prisms with 13 groups were applied on four different preloading compressive stress levels by specially designed equipments.The compressive ultimate strength of concrete reduced more quickly on the mutual action of two damage factors.The higher of the preloading compressive stress was,the more quickly it reduced.The tensility of the concrete and the peak strain reduced on the action of compressive stress.

Abstract:The durability of concrete on the action of two damage factors of freeze-thaw cycles and preloading compressive stress was investigated. 15 concrete prisms with 3 groups were applied on four different preloading compressive stress levels by specially designed equipments. The damage of concrete on the mutual action of two damage factors is more quickly than the simply superimposition of damage on individual action of two factors. The higher of the preloading compressive stress was, the more quickly of the damage is. Weight loss rate is not apparent on the action of compressive stress.

Abstract:Due to inappropriate protective measures during construction, building structures in cold regions can easily suffer from frost heaving damage during the wintering period. Such damage is relatively invisible and can hardly be detected. According to the actual engineering conditions, this paper comprehensively analyzes the destructional form of each building element at low temperatures as well as discusses the methods to detect and evaluate damage of buildings at low temperatures. The author finds that: Under low-temperature environment, punching failure often occurs between the foundation slab and bearing platform and the anchor connection between the pile and bearing platform can easily become ineffective.

Abstract:Based on the simulative analysis software-FZFX3D,two different conditions: the concrete surface is to be covered with or without curing insulation material immediately after the placement are calculated by taken a model dam,of which the concrete construction begins during winter,as the actual case.The temperature distribution,heat flux and temperature rise of the whole dam body on a specific elevation are analyzed,and then an optimal time to begin the concrete surface protection for the curing during winter is proposed herein as well.
