Abstract:This study evaluates the response of scrap tire rubber pads (STRP) made of used automobile tires as seismic shock absorbers. STRP’s are highly effective in low-rise buildings, even in high seismic risk zones, and affordable for developing countries. In this research, the four-story regular buildings of one type and irregularly shaped buildings such as plan irregularity (H shape, square core type, and plus type) and vertical geometry irregularity (two types) of fixed and STRP base were analyzed using the SAP 2000 software package. The technique of Nonlinear Modal Time History Analysis is applied for the analysis. This technique furnishes genuine and accurate results in a shorter duration. For instance, the STRP’s are designed as per UBC-97 design principles suitable for Indian conditions. The three selected real-time history records are checked for convergence using SeismoMatch software for IS:1893–2016 conditions. Most significantly, the matching is achieved for all the soil conditions as per IS code. The dynamic properties of the buildings such as base shear, acceleration, story displacement, story drift, story drift ratio, and hysteresis loops were determined and discussed. The analysis reveals that in the case of plan irregularity type, the square-core type has better base shear and acceleration reduction, regardless, the energy absorption capacity is quite lesser compared to all the buildings. Furthermore, the vertical irregularity type buildings’ drift reduction is fair to all the buildings. Therefore, the analysis reports that the response (dynamic behavior) of regular-shaped buildings is superior to irregularly shaped buildings with STRP as the base isolator.
