Abstract:In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the gradient coils are used to encode the spatial positions of protons by varying the magnetic field linearly across the imaging subject. With the latest development of MRI technique and new clinical and research applications, the gradient coil system requires increasingly innovative designs. In this paper, four unconventional gradient coil designs are reviewed: (1) local gradient coils; (2) new coil configurations with reduced peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS); (3) dedicated structures designed for hybrid systems (combining MRI with other medical devices); and (4) the full 3D coil designs. For the first type, the development of local gradient coils (mainly head coils) is discussed chronologically and divided into three stages: the "golden" stage in the 1990s, the "wane" stage in the 2000s, and the "revival" stage in the 2010s. For the second type, various designs for the reduction of PNS problems have been described, including local and whole-body gradient coil systems. For the third design, a dedicated gradient coil design for multi-modality combination is illustrated with an MRI-LINAC system. Finally, gradient systems with non-layered coil structure are described in the fourth design type. We hope that this review on unconventional gradient coil designs will be useful for the new development of MRI technology and emerging medical applications.

Abstract:Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently experienced a renaissance that is largely attributable to the numerous technological advancements made in MRI, including optimized pulse sequences, parallel receive and compressed sensing, improved calibrations and reconstruction algorithms, and the adoption of machine learning for image postprocessing. This new attention on low-field MRI originates from a lack of accessibility to traditional MRI and the need for affordable imaging. Low-field MRI provides a viable option due to its lack of reliance on radio-frequency shielding rooms, expensive liquid helium, and cryogen quench pipes. Moreover, its relatively small size and weight allow for easy and affordable installation in most settings. Rather than replacing conventional MRI, low-field MRI will provide new opportunities for imaging both in developing and developed countries. This article discusses the history of low-field MRI, low-field MRI hardware and software, current devices on the market, advantages and disadvantages, and low-field MRI's global potential. Abstract:Portable low-cost MRI systems have the potential to enable point-of-care and timely MRI diagnosis, and to make this imaging modality available to routine scans and to underdeveloped areas. With simplicity, no maintenance, no power consumption, and low cost, permanent magnets or arrays are attractive to use as a source of magnetic field to realize portability and low cost for a scanners. However, when taking the Fourier imaging approach and using linear gradient fields, homogeneous fields are required, thus either a bulky magnet is needed, or the imaging volume is too small to image an organ if the magnet is scaled down. Recently, with the progress on image reconstruction based on non-linear gradient field, field patterns without spatial-linearity can be used as spatial encoding magnetic fields to encode MRI signals for imaging. As a result, the requirements for the homogeneity of the field can be relaxed, which allows permanent magnets(arrays) with reduced sizes, reduced weight to image bigger volumes covering organs such as a head. It offers chances to construct a truly portable low-cost MRI scanner. For this exciting potential application, permanent magnets(arrays) have attracted increased attention. A magnet(array) is strongly associated with the imaging volume, reconstruction methods, and RF excitation and coils, etc. through field patterns and homogeneity. This paper offers a review on permanent magnets(arrays) of different kinds, especially those can be used for spatial encoding towards the development of portable and low-cost MRI systems. It is aimed to familiarize the readers with relevant knowledge, literature, and the latest updates of the development on permanent magnets for MRI. Perspectives on and challenges of using permanent magnets to supply a patterned magnetic field, without spatial-linearity nor high homogeneity, for reconstruction in a portable setup are discussed.

Methods: A discretized Halbach permanent magnet array with a clear bore diameter of 27 cm was designed for operation at 50 mT. Custom built gradient coils, radiofrequency coil, gradient amplifiers and radiofrequency amplifier were integrated and tested on both phantoms and in vivo. Results: Phantom results showed that the gradient non-linearity in the y- and z-directions was less than 5% over a 15 cm field-of-view and did not need correcting. For the x-direction, it was significantly greater, but could be partially corrected in post-processing. Three dimensional In vivo scans of the brain of a healthy volunteer using a turbo-spin echo sequence were acquired at a spatial resolution of 4x4x4 mm in a time of ~2 mins. T1-weighted and T2-weighted scans showed a good degree of tissue contrast. In addition, in vivo scans of the knee of a healthy volunteer were acquired at a spatial resolution of ~3x2x2 mm within a twelve minutes to show the applicability of the system to extremity imaging. Conclusion: This work has shown that it is possible to construct a low-field MRI unit with hardware components costing less than 10000 euros, which is able to acquire human images in vivo within a reasonable data acquisition time. The system has a high degree of portability with magnet weight ~75 kg, gradient and RF amplifiers each 15 kg, gradient coils 10 kg and spectrometer 5 kg.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging is a key diagnostic tool in modern healthcare, yet it can be cost-prohibitive given the high installation, maintenance and operation costs of the machinery. There are approximately seven scanners per million inhabitants and over 90% are concentrated in high-income countries. We describe an ultra-low-field brain MRI scanner that operates using a standard AC power outlet and is low cost to build. Using a permanent 0.055 Tesla Samarium-cobalt magnet and deep learning for cancellation of electromagnetic interference, it requires neither magnetic nor radiofrequency shielding cages. The scanner is compact, mobile, and acoustically quiet during scanning. We implement four standard clinical neuroimaging protocols (T1- and T2-weighted, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery like, and diffusion-weighted imaging) on this system, and demonstrate preliminary feasibility in diagnosing brain tumor and stroke. Such technology has the potential to meet clinical needs at point of care or in low and middle income countries.
An Exploration of Parallel Imaging System for Very-low Field (50mT) MRI Scanner

Abstract:Reducing the scanning time of very-low field (VLF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, commonly employed for stroke diagnosis, can enhance patient comfort and operational efficiency. The conventional parallel imaging (PI) technique for high-field MRI should be tailored to apply here, considering the differences in the direction of the main magnetic field and the presence of noise. A VLF-specific PI algorithm and phased-array coil are proposed, marking the first application of PI in VLF MRI. Reconstruction quality is enhanced by denoising undersampled k-space data using a linear-prediction based Kalman filter. Subsequently, the denoised k-space data are nonlinearly mapped from the original space onto a high-dimensional feature space, utilizing a polynomial feature mapping defined nonlinear frame. Frame parameters are calculated using auto-calibration signals (ACS) from the center k-space, and missing phase-encoding lines in the original space are estimated using acquired lines in the feature space. An 8-channel phased-array coil, designed for a vertical main magnetic field, is decoupled using geometric overlap and a low input impedance (LII) preamplifier. Healthy volunteer head imaging experiments using the proposed PI technique exhibit the lowest mean-squared-error (MSE) value and the highest peak-signal-to-noise (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM) values compared to two widely used PI methods. The proposed PI technique enables the VLF MRI scanner to achieve similar image quality and a 72.5% improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to fully sampled images while requiring less than 50% of the scan time. We present a PI technique tailored for VLF MRI scanner for the first time, along with potential research direction to achieve greater reduction factor.

Abstract:Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of diverse health conditions has experienced growing popularity over other imaging modalities like ultrasound and Computer Tomography. Initially, proof-of-concept and earlier MRI systems were based on resistive and permanent magnet technology. However, superconducting magnets have long held monopoly of the market for MRI systems with their high-field (HF) strength capability, although they present high construction, installation, and siting requirements. Such stringent prerequisites restrict their availability and use in low-middle income countries. Resistive coil-based magnet, albeit low-field (LF) in capacity, represent a plausible boost for the availability and use of MRI systems in resource constrained settings. These systems are characterized by low costs coupled with substantial image quality for diagnosis of some conditions such as hydrocephalus common is such regions. However, the nature of resistive coils causes them to heat up during operation, thus necessitating a dedicated cooling system to improve image quality and enhance system longevity. This paper explores a range of cooling methods as have been applied to resistive magnets, citing their pros and cons and areas for improvement.

Abstract:<p>We present a fast field-cycling NMR relaxometer with added magnetic resonance imaging capabilities. The instrument operates at a maximum proton Larmor frequency of 5 MHz for a sample volume of 35 mL. The magnetic field homogeneity across the sample is 1400 ppm. The main field is generated with a notch-coil electromagnet of own design, fed with a current whose stability is 220 ppm. We show that images of reasonable quality can still be produced under such conditions. The machine is being designed for concept testing of the involved instrumentation and specific contrast agents aimed for field-cycling magnetic resonance imaging applications. The general performance of the prototype was tested through localized relaxometry experiments, <em>T<sub>1</sub></em>-dispersion weighted images, temperature maps and <em>T<sub>1</sub></em>-weighted images at different magnetic field intensities. We introduce the concept of positive and negative contrast depending on the use of pre-polarized or non-polarized sequences. The system is being improved for pre-clinical studies in small animals.</p>

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has proven excellent performance in dental imaging, especially for temporomandibular joint (TMJ), teeth, and periodontal apparatus. However, the high price and strict installation environment of the conventional high-field MRI has prevented its widespread use in dental clinics or developing regions. The introduction of low-cost and portable MRI scanners will help increase the easy accessibility of MRI examination and reduce the patients’ waiting time. This work introduces a low-cost portable 50 mT MRI scanner for dental imaging. First, the overall structure including permanent magnets, gradient coils, and radio-frequency (RF) coils is introduced. The cooling system is removed because the static field is maintained by the permanent magnets. The system stands 90 cm wide, 110 cm high and weighs 600 kg, which makes it possible to install in an average-sized room. Then, the design processes of specialized RF receiving coils for TMJ, teeth are illustrated. In order to improve patient comfort, an intraoral wireless coil for boosting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) inside the oral cavity is proposed. Furthermore, the T1-weighted images of TMJ and teeth are given to show the dental imaging performance of the proposed device.
B0-Shimming Methodology for Affordable and Compact Low-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Magnets

Abstract:Low-field (B 0 < 0.2 T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is emerging as a low cost, point-of-care alternative to provide access to diagnostic imaging technology even in resource scarce environments. MRI magnets can be constructed based on permanent neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets in discretized arrangements, leading to substantially lower mass and costs. A challenge with these designs is, however, a good B 0 field homogeneity, which is needed to produce high quality images free of distortions. In this work, we describe an iterative approach to build a low-field MR magnet based on a B 0 -shimming methodology using genetic algorithms. The methodology is tested by constructing a small bore (inner bore diameter = 130 mm) desktop MR magnet (<15 kg) at a field strength of B 0 = 0.1 T and a target volume of 4 cm in diameter. The configuration consists of a base magnet and shim inserts, which can be placed iteratively without modifying the base magnet assembly and without changing the inner dimensions of the bore or the outer dimensions of the MR magnet. Applying the shims, B 0 field inhomogeneity could be reduced by a factor 8 from 5,448 to 682 ppm in the target central slice of the magnet. Further improvements of these results can be achieved in a second or third iteration, using more sensitive magnetic field probes (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance based magnetic field measurements). The presented methodology is scalable to bigger magnet designs. The MR magnet can be reproduced with off-the-shelf components and a 3D printer and no special tools are needed for construction. All design files and code to reproduce the results will be made available as open source hardware.

Abstract:A review of non-traditional approaches and emerging trends in superconducting magnets for MRI is presented. Novel technologies and concepts have arisen in response to new clinical imaging needs, changes in market cost structure, and the realities of newly developing markets. Among key trends are an increasing emphasis on patient comfort and the need for 'greener' magnets with reduced helium usage. The paper starts with a brief overview of the well-optimized conventional MR magnet technology that presently firmly occupies the dominant position in the imaging market up to 9.4 T. Non-traditional magnet geometries, with an emphasis on openness, are reviewed. The prospects of MgB2 and high-temperature superconductors for MRI applications are discussed. In many cases the introduction of novel technologies into a cost-conscious commercial market will be stimulated by growing needs for advanced customized procedures, and specialty scanners such as orthopedic or head imagers can lead the way due to the intrinsic advantages in their design. A review of ultrahigh-field MR is presented, including the largest 11.7 T Iseult magnet. Advanced cryogenics approaches with an emphasis on low-volume helium systems, including hermetically sealed self-contained cryostats requiring no user intervention, as well as future non-traditional non-helium cryogenics, are presented.

Abstract:Parallel imaging (PI) is one of the most promising recent advances in MRI technology and has, similar to the introduction of multidetector helical scanning in CT, revolutionized MR imaging. The speed of all conventional MRI methods has been limited by either gradient strength or their switching times. The basic idea in PI is to use some of the spatial information contained in the individual elements of a radiofrequency (RF) receiver coil array to increase imaging speed. These PI techniques are removing some of the previous limitations in speed of MRI scanners and set the basis for accelerated image formation. Initially, PI was motivated by the wish to accelerate image acquisition without reducing the spatial resolution of the image. However, depending on the application, it turned out that PI harbors several other advantages. Among those is the possibility for higher spatial resolution, shorter breath-holds or multiple averaging to diminish motion artifacts, reduced image blurring and geometric distortions, better temporal resolution, and means for navigator correction. This overview focuses on technical aspects, clinical applications, and ongoing research in different areas of the human body. The critical review demonstrates PI's great versatility as well as the current trends to use this unique technique in the majority of clinical scan protocols.
Joint Non-Linear MRI Inversion with Diffusion Priors

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a potent diagnostic tool, but suffers from long examination times. To accelerate the process, modern MRI machines typically utilize multiple coils that acquire sub-sampled data in parallel. Data-driven reconstruction approaches, in particular diffusion models, recently achieved remarkable success in reconstructing these data, but typically rely on estimating the coil sensitivities in an off-line step. This suffers from potential movement and misalignment artifacts and limits the application to Cartesian sampling trajectories. To obviate the need for off-line sensitivity estimation, we propose to jointly estimate the sensitivity maps with the image. In particular, we utilize a diffusion model -- trained on magnitude images only -- to generate high-fidelity images while imposing spatial smoothness of the sensitivity maps in the reverse diffusion. The proposed approach demonstrates consistent qualitative and quantitative performance across different sub-sampling patterns. In addition, experiments indicate a good fit of the estimated coil sensitivities.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic structures, particularly the anti-eddy plate, in a bi-planar permanent-magnet-type low-field (0.05 T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scanner can distort the gradient field in the target region. This study aims to provide a new gradient coil design method that reduces ferromagnetic influences on gradient field linearity. Thus, a simplified model of electromagnetic (EM) structures of the permanent-magnet-type MRI scanners was established. By using precise analytical proof, the anti-eddy plate was reduced to a homogeneous magnetic plate. The overall effects of the EM structures, which can be represented by bi-planar magnetic plates, were evaluated. In sequence, the image magnetic dipole was first introduced to show the effects of anti-eddy plates were added to the conventional equivalent magnetic dipole (EMD) approach. A novel equivalent image magnetic dipole (EIMD) method was proposed to build the gradient coil pattern. The effect of ferromagnetic materials was predicted throughout the gradient coil design phase using the proposed method, and a high-linear gradient field was generated under real working conditions. The computational and experimental results showed that the gradient coil was linear when ferromagnetic structures were present. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by comparing T1-weighted images of the conventional method to those of the proposed method. The proposed method reduced image distortion caused by nearby EM structures in bi-planar permanent-magnet-type low-field MRI systems and provided an effective and concise solution for gradient coil designs.

The gradient insert induces a rapidly oscillating gradient field in the phase-encode direction, which enables nonlinear encoding when combined with a Cartesian readout from the linear whole-body gradients. Data from a 2D gradient echo sequence were reconstructed using a point spread function (PSF) framework. Accelerated scans were also simulated via retrospective undersampling (R = 1 to R = 8) to determine the effectiveness of the PSF-framework for accelerated imaging. Results: Using a nonlinear gradient field switched at 20 kHz and the PSF-framework resulted in images of comparable quality to images from conventional Cartesian linear encoding. At increased acceleration factors (R ≤ 8), the PSF-framework outperformed linear SENSE reconstructions by improved controlling of aliasing artifacts. Conclusion: Using the PSF-framework, images of comparable quality to conventional SENSE reconstructions are possible via combining traditional linear and ultrasonic oscillating nonlinear encoding fields. Using nonlinear gradient fields relaxes the demand for strictly linear gradient fields, enabling much higher slew rates with a reduced risk of peripheral nerve stimulation or cardiac stimulation, which could aid in extension to ultrasonic whole-body MRI. The lack of aliasing artifacts also highlights the potential of accelerated imaging using the PSF-framework.

Abstract:The goal is to develop new architectures for computed tomography (CT) which are at an ultra-low-cost for developing countries, especially in rural areas. The proposed general scheme is inspired by the recently developed compressive sensing and interior tomography techniques, where the data acquisition system targets a region of interest (ROI) to acquire limited and truncated data. Similar to linear tomosynthesis, the source and detector are translated in opposite directions but in contrast to conventional tomosynthesis, our proposal is for either ROI reconstruction with one or more localized linear scans or global reconstruction by combining multiple ROI reconstructions. In other words, the popular slip ring is replaced by a translation based setup, and the instrumentation cost is reduced by a relaxation of the imaging speed requirement. The various translational scanning modes are theoretically analyzed, and the scanning parameters are optimized. The numerical simulation results from different numbers of linear scans confirm the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and suggest two preferred low-end systems for horizontal and vertical patient positions respectively. Ultra-low-cost x-ray CT is feasible with our proposed combination of linear scanning, compressive sensing, and interior tomography. The proposed architecture can be tailored into permanent, movable, or reconfigurable systems as desirable. Advanced image registration and spectral imaging features can be included as well.
