Abstract:This work presents a novel approach to achieve homogeneous single slab excitation under severe RF field inhomogeneity in ultra high field MRI. Based on the recently developed parallel transmission technology, an optimized 3D tailored RF (TRF) pulse has been proposed to upgrade the excitation performance. The pulse is designed with a dedicatedly chosen trajectory that is tailored according to the highly responsible-for-desired-pattern k-space area. An iterative RF pulse design method is employed to ensure the excitation accuracy. Test simulations show that the proposed scheme optimally upgrades the excitation, and more importantly, reduces the required peak RF energy, which further upgrades the safety of clinical applications.

Abstract:Volume selective excitation has a variety of uses in clinical magnetic resonance imaging, but can suffer from insufficient excitation accuracy and impractically long pulse duration in ultra-high field applications. Based on recently-developed parallel transmission techniques, an optimized 3D tailored radio-frequency RF (TRF) pulse, designed with a novel 3D adaptive trajectory, is proposed to improve and accelerate volume selective excitation. The trajectory is designed to be regular-shaped and adaptively stretched according to the size of a 3D k-space "trajectory container." The container is designed to hold most of the RF energy deposition responsible for the desired pattern in the excitation k-space in the use of the blurring patterns caused by the multichannel sensitivity maps. The proposed method can also be used to reduce both global and peak RF energy required during excitation. The feasibility of this method is confirmed by simulations of ultra-high field cases.

Abstract:In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the gradient coils are used to encode the spatial positions of protons by varying the magnetic field linearly across the imaging subject. With the latest development of MRI technique and new clinical and research applications, the gradient coil system requires increasingly innovative designs. In this paper, four unconventional gradient coil designs are reviewed: (1) local gradient coils; (2) new coil configurations with reduced peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS); (3) dedicated structures designed for hybrid systems (combining MRI with other medical devices); and (4) the full 3D coil designs. For the first type, the development of local gradient coils (mainly head coils) is discussed chronologically and divided into three stages: the "golden" stage in the 1990s, the "wane" stage in the 2000s, and the "revival" stage in the 2010s. For the second type, various designs for the reduction of PNS problems have been described, including local and whole-body gradient coil systems. For the third design, a dedicated gradient coil design for multi-modality combination is illustrated with an MRI-LINAC system. Finally, gradient systems with non-layered coil structure are described in the fourth design type. We hope that this review on unconventional gradient coil designs will be useful for the new development of MRI technology and emerging medical applications.
Three-dimensional Simultaneous Brain Mapping of T1, T2, T2*and Magnetic Susceptibility with MR Multitasking

Abstract:Purpose To develop a new technique that enables simultaneous quantification of whole-brain T-1, T-2, T2*, as well as susceptibility and synthesis of six contrast-weighted images in a single 9.1-minute scan. Methods The technique uses hybrid T-2-prepared inversion-recovery pulse modules and multi-echo gradient-echo readouts to collect k-space data with various T1, T2, and T2* weightings. The underlying image is represented as a six-dimensional low-rank tensor consisting of three spatial dimensions and three temporal dimensions corresponding to T-1 recovery, T-2 decay, and multi-echo behaviors, respectively. Multiparametric maps were fitted from reconstructed image series. The proposed method was validated on phantoms and healthy volunteers, by comparing quantitative measurements against corresponding reference methods. The feasibility of generating six contrast-weighted images was also examined. Results High quality, co-registered T-1, T-2, and T2* susceptibility maps were generated that closely resembled the reference maps. Phantom measurements showed substantial consistency (R-2 > 0.98) with the reference measurements. Despite the significant differences of T-1 (p < .001), T-2 (p = .002), and T2* (p = 0.008) between our method and the references for in vivo studies, excellent agreement was achieved with all intraclass correlation coefficients greater than 0.75. No significant difference was found for susceptibility (p = .900). The framework is also capable of synthesizing six contrast-weighted images. Conclusion The MR Multitasking-based 3D brain mapping of T-1, T-2, T2*, and susceptibility agrees well with the reference and is a promising technique for multicontrast and quantitative imaging.

Abstract:Purpose We propose and evaluate multiphoton parallel transmission (MP‐pTx) to mitigate flip angle inhomogeneities in high‐field MRI. MP‐pTx is an excitation method that utilizes a single, conventional birdcage coil supplemented with low‐frequency (kHz) irradiation from a multichannel shim array and/or gradient channels. SAR analysis is simplified to that of a conventional birdcage coil, because only the radiofrequency (RF) field from the birdcage coil produces significant SAR. Methods MP‐pTx employs an off‐resonance RF pulse from a conventional birdcage coil supplemented with oscillating z ‐directed fields from a multichannel shim array and/or the gradient coils. We simulate the ability of MP‐pTx to create uniform nonselective brain excitations at 7 T using realistic B1+ and ΔB0 field maps. The RF, shim array, and gradient waveform's amplitudes and phases are optimized using a genetic algorithm followed by sequential quadratic programming. Results A 1 ms MP‐pTx excitation using a 32‐channel shim array with current constrained to less than 50 Amp‐turns reduced the transverse magnetization's normalized root‐mean‐squared error from 29% for a conventional birdcage excitation to 6.6% and was nearly 40% better than a 1 ms birdcage coil 5 kT‐point excitation with optimized kT‐point locations and comparable pulse power. Conclusion The MP‐pTx method resembles conventional pTx in its goals and approach but replaces the parallel RF channels with cheaper, low‐frequency shim channels. The method mitigates high‐field flip angle inhomogeneities to a level better than 3 T CP‐mode and comparable to 7 T pTx while retaining the straightforward SAR characteristics of conventional birdcage excitations, as low‐frequency shim array fields produce negligible SAR.

Abstract:Purpose To develop multiphoton excitation techniques for simultaneous multislice (SMS) imaging and evaluate their performance and specific absorption rate (SAR) benefit. To improve multiphoton SMS reconstruction quality with a novel CAIPIRINHA (controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration) design. Theory and Methods When a conventional single‐slice RF field is applied together with an oscillating gradient field, the two can combine to generate multiphoton excitation at multiple discrete spatial locations. Because the conventional RF is reused at multiple spatial locations, multiphoton excitation offers reduced SAR for SMS applications. CAIPIRINHA shifts are often used to improve parallel‐imaging acceleration. Interestingly, CAIPIRINHA‐type shifts can be obtained for multiphoton SMS by updating the oscillating gradient phase at every phase encode. In this work, both a gradient‐echo and a spin‐echo sequence with multiphoton CAIPIRINHA‐SMS excitation pulses are implemented for in vivo human imaging at 3 T. Results For three slices, multiphoton SMS provides a 51% reduction in SAR compared with conventional superposition SMS, whereas for five slices, SAR is reduced by 66%. Multiphoton SMS outperforms PINS (power independent of number of slices) and MultiPINS in terms of SAR reduction especially when the pulse duration is short, slices are thin, and/or the slice spacing is large. A custom CAIPIRINHA phase‐encoding design for multiphoton SMS significantly improves reconstruction quality. Conclusion Multiphoton SMS excitation can be obtained by combining conventional single‐slice RF pulses with an oscillating gradient and offers significant SAR benefits compared with conventional superposition SMS. A novel CAIPIRINHA design allows higher multiband factors for multiphoton SMS imaging.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has diverse applications in physics, biology, and medicine. Uniform excitation of nuclei spins through circular-polarized transverse magnetic component of electromagnetic field is vital for obtaining unbiased tissue contrasts. However, achieving this in the electrically large human body poses a significant challenge, especially at ultra-high fields (UHF) with increased working frequencies (≥297 MHz). Canonical volume resonators struggle to meet this challenge, while radiative excitation methods like travelling-wave (TW) show promise but often suffer from inadequate excitation efficiency. Here, we introduce a new technique using a subwavelength dielectric waveguide insert that enhances both efficiency and homogeneity at 7 T. Through TE11-to-TM11 mode conversion, power focusing, wave impedance matching, and phase velocity matching, we achieved a 114% improvement in TW efficiency and mitigated the center-brightening effect. This fundamental advancement in TW MRI through effective wave manipulation could promote the electromagnetic design of UHF MRI systems.

Abstract:Purpose To develop a small‐tip multidimensional RF pulse design procedure that incorporates linear time‐invariant gradient imperfections and concomitant field effects. This could be particularly important for contemporary low‐field MRI systems with high‐performance gradients. Theory and Methods We developed an extension of the small‐tip excitation k‐space formalism, where concomitant fields were approximated as a Bloch‐Siegert shift in the rotating frame. This was evaluated using realistic simulations of 2D selective excitation at various field strengths (0.2T, 0.55T, 1.5T, 3T, and 7T) with single and parallel transmit. Simulated excitation profiles from the original and extended k‐space formalisms were compared. Experimental validations were performed at 0.55T with a single‐channel transmit. Results The extended formalism provides improved 2D excitation profiles in all scenarios simulated, compared against the original formalism. The proposed method corrects the concomitant field effects on 2D selective excitations for B0 > 0.2T when the magnitude of the B0 is far larger than that of nonrotating concomitant fields. Simulation and phantom experiments at 0.55T match well for both original and proposed methods, with the proposed method providing sharper and more accurate excitation profiles at off‐isocenter distances up to 15 cm. The impact of the proposed method is greatest in scenarios where concomitant fields are substantial, such as low field strengths and off‐isocenter. Conclusion Concomitant fields can be modeled as a Bloch‐Siegert shift in the rotating frame during multidimensional RF pulse design, resulting in improved excitation profiles with sharp edges. This is important to consider for off‐isocenter excitations and imaging at low field strengths with strong gradients.

Abstract:Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a radiation-free vessel- and target-imaging modality that can sensitively detect nanoparticles. A static magnetic gradient field, referred to as a selection field, is required in MPI to provide a field-free region (FFR) for spatial encoding. The image resolution of MPI is closely related to the size of the FFR, which is determined by the selection field gradient amplitude. Because of the limitations of existing gradient coil hardware, the image resolution of MPI cannot satisfy the clinical requirements of human in vivo imaging. Pulsed excitation has been confirmed to improve the image resolution of MPI by breaking down the 'relaxation wall.' This work proposes the use of a pulsed waveform magnetic gradient from magnetic resonance imaging to further improve the image resolution of MPI. Through alignment of the gradient direction along the field-free line (FFL), each location on the FFL is able to have a unique excitation field strength that generates a specific relaxation-induced decay signal. Through excitation of nanoparticles on the FFL with many gradient profiles, a high-resolution, one-dimensional (1D) image can be reconstructed on the FFL. For larger magnetic nanoparticles, simulation results revealed that a pulsed excitation field with a greater flat portion generates a 1D bar pattern phantom image with a higher correlation and spatial resolution. With parallel FFL and gradient coil movements, high-resolution, two-dimensional (2D) Shepp–Logan phantom and brain vessel maps were reconstructed through repetition of the spatially resolved measurement of magnetic nanoparticles on the FFL.

Clinical applications of the kT-points method to homogenise spin excitation in 3T MRI

Abstract:High field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often used in clinical practice, for the high signal-to-noise ratio it offers.However, at high field, the radiofrequency (RF) wavelength used for imaging is shorter, which can induce loss of signal and contrast when it is close to or shorter than the dimensions of the irradiated objects. At 3T, RF wavelength is about 30 cm in human tissues,and such artefacts are frequently observed in the abdomen, as well as in the thighs or in the breasts. This is certainly one of the main reasons why high field MRI has failed to establish itself as the gold standard in hospital, where 1.5T scanners are more frequent.Recent 3T scanners usually come with a two-RF-channel parallel transmission setup: in principle, each channel can transmit completely independent waveforms. However, this technology is not exploited fully in practice, as only the static RF shimming is implemented: a single waveform is used, with adjusted amplitude and phase on each channel. This allows to create interference patterns, calculated to counteract transmission inhomogeneities measured beforehand in the patient (RF and possibly static field).This method works best when many channels are available, but shows its limits when good homogeneity is expected over a large field of view. The kT-points method, developed at CEA-NeuroSpin for brain imaging at ultra-high field (7T) relies on a succession of short rectangular RF pulses interleaved with static gradient “blips” to modulate magnetisation at will, thus producing homogeneous excitation in spite of an imperfect RF field. Those composite pulses are even more effective as they can take advantage of parallel transmission (eight channels at 7T). In this thesis, the kT-points technique is applied at 3T. The objective is to demonstrate its usefulness and its compatibility with a clinical routine workflow. First, several changes made to the kT-points pulse design algorithm and to static field mapping in order to adapt them to body imaging (liver, breasts) are described. Indeed, the presence of lungs and fat add further constraints compared to the brain. Then, several clinical studies are detailed. The first one regards T₂-weighted breast MRI on a single-channel scanner. It shows that in that case the default transmit mode is satisfactory,and only slightly improved by kT-points. A second study focuses on T₁-weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging of the liver,with two transmit channels. Static RF shimming and kT-points were compared on a large cohort. For some “difficult” patients,acquisitions were quantitatively and qualitatively better with kTpoints,which therefore offer a more uniform diagnostic quality among the population. Finally, a novel method is proposed:SmartPulse. It is based on the universal pulse concept, developed in NeuroSpin for brain imaging, whose principle is to design pulses (e.g. kT-points) for a given application, that homogenise excitation in the whole population, and not only for one subject.Thus, there is no more need for cumbersome mapping and inline pulse design. SmartPulse extends the range of universal pulses to body imaging, by adequately clustering the population, designing different pulses for each cluster, and applying a machine learning classifier to assign the most appropriate pulse to any new subject.Proof of concept was undertaken in abdominal imaging, whereinter-subject variability is considerable. We hope this thesis will give a new outlook on RF inhomogeneity handling in routine 3T MRI, and in the long run will help making body imaging moreaccessible at high and ultra-high field.

Here we have used a search algorithm to produce inversion pulses tailored to take into account the heterogeneity of the RF transmit field at 7 T. This created a slice selective inversion pulse that worked well (good slice profile and uniform inversion) over the range of RF amplitudes typically obtained in the head at 7 T while still maintaining an experimentally achievable pulse length and pulse amplitude in the brain at 7 T. The pulses used were based on the frequency offset correction inversion technique, as well as time dilation of functions, but the RF amplitude, frequency sweep, and gradient functions were all generated using a genetic algorithm with an evaluation function that took into account both the desired inversion profile and the transmit field inhomogeneity.

Abstract:Purpose To propose a novel method for parallel‐transmission (pTx) spatial‐spectral pulse design and demonstrate its utility for robust uniform water‐selective excitation (water excitation) across the entire brain. Theory and Methods Our design problem is formulated as a magnitude‐least‐squares minimization with joint RF and k‐space optimization under explicit specific‐absorption‐rate constraints. For improved robustness against off‐resonance effects, the spectral component of the excitation target is prescribed to have a water passband and a fat stopband. A two‐step algorithm was devised to solve our design problem, with Step 1 aiming to solve a reduced problem to find a sensible start point for Step 2 to solve the original problem. The efficacy of our pulse design was evaluated in simulation, phantom, and human experiments using the commercial Nova head coil. Universal pulses were also designed based on a 10‐subject training data set to demonstrate the utility of our method for plug‐and‐play pTx. Results For kT‐points and spiral nonselective parameterizations, our design method outperformed the pTx interleaved binomial approach, reducing RMS error by up to about 35% for water excitation and about 97% for fat suppression (over a 200‐Hz bandwidth) while decreasing local specific absorption rate by about 30%. Both our subject‐specific and universal pulses improved water excitation, restoring signal loss in the cerebellum while suppressing fat signal even in regions of large susceptibility‐induced off‐resonances. Conclusion Demonstrated useful for 4D (3D spatial, one‐dimensional spectral) pTx spatial‐spectral pulse design, our proposed method provides an effective solution for robust volumetric uniform water excitation, holding a promise to many ultrahigh‐field applications.

Abstract:Purpose This work proposes a "hybrid" RF pulse design method for parallel transmit (pTx) systems to simultaneously control flip angle and root‐mean‐squared B1+ (B1rms ). These pulses are generally only designed for flip angle, however, this can lead to uncontrolled B1rms , which then leads to variable magnetization transfer (MT) effects. We demonstrate the hybrid design approach for quantitative imaging where both flip angle and B1rms are important. Theory and Methods A dual cost function optimization is performed containing the normalized mean squared errors of the flip angle and B1rms distributions weighted by a parameter λ . Simulations were conducted to study the behavior of both properties when simultaneously optimizing them. In vivo experiments on a 7T MRI system with an 8‐channel pTx head coil were carried out to study the effect of the hybrid design approach on variable flip angle R1 (= 1/T1) mapping. Results Simulations showed that both flip angle and B1rms can be homogenized simultaneously without detriment to either when compared to an individual optimization. By homogenizing flip angle and B1rms , R1 maps were more uniform (coefficient of variation 6.6% vs. 13.0%) compared to those acquired with pulses that only homogenized flip angle. Conclusion The proposed hybrid design homogenizes on‐resonance MT effects while homogenizing the flip angle distribution, with only a small detriment in the latter compared to a pulse that just homogenizes flip angle. This improved R1 mapping by controlling incidental MT effects, yielding more uniform R1 maps.

Abstract:It has been reported that combining ultrahigh field (UHF) with 3D imaging is beneficial for high-resolution imaging. Nevertheless, image quality may suffer from increased magnetic field inhomogeneity. Thus, we combined radiofrequency (RF) parallel transmission (pTx) with 3D simultaneous multi-slab (SMSlab) acquisition at 7T to get improved transmit field and optimal SNR efficiency concurrently. By simulation, it was proved that by using a 3-spoke RF pulses we could get 25% more uniform excitation magnitude than 2-spoke pulses (with almost the same RF peak power and identical pulse duration).

Abstract:As an important nonlinear optical imaging method, multiphoton excitation has demonstrated its wide application in biomedical imaging. Although shorter pulse can induce a higher nonlinear effect, most applications are still restricted in 100 fs region due to the existence of high-order dispersion. Through the compensation of high-order dispersion with multiphoton intrapulse interference, we successfully introduce 10 fs pulse into multiphoton biomedical imaging. We find that a deeper penetration and a correct excitation of multiple dyes can be obtained with this method.
Joint design of large-tip-angle parallel RF pulses and blipped gradient trajectories

Abstract:Purpose: To design multichannel large-tip-angle kT-points and spokes radiofrequency (RF) pulses and gradient waveforms for transmit field inhomogeneity compensation in high field magnetic resonance imaging. Theory and methods: An algorithm to design RF subpulse weights and gradient blip areas is proposed to minimize a magnitude least-squares cost function that measures the difference between realized and desired state parameters in the spin domain, and penalizes integrated RF power. The minimization problem is solved iteratively with interleaved target phase updates, RF subpulse weights updates using the conjugate gradient method with optimal control-based derivatives, and gradient blip area updates using the conjugate gradient method. Two-channel parallel transmit simulations and experiments were conducted in phantoms and human subjects at 7 T to demonstrate the method and compare it to small-tip-angle-designed pulses and circularly polarized excitations. Results: The proposed algorithm designed more homogeneous and accurate 180° inversion and refocusing pulses than other methods. It also designed large-tip-angle pulses on multiple frequency bands with independent and joint phase relaxation. Pulses designed by the method improved specificity and contrast-to-noise ratio in a finger-tapping spin echo blood oxygen level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging study, compared with circularly polarized mode refocusing. Conclusion: A joint RF and gradient waveform design algorithm was proposed and validated to improve large-tip-angle inversion and refocusing at ultrahigh field.

Abstract:Simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acceleration technique that utilizes multi-band radio-frequency pulses to simultaneously excite and encode multiple slices. Currently, SMS has been widely studied and applied in the MRI examination to reduce acquisition time, which can significantly improve the examination efficiency and patient throughput. Moreover, SMS technique can improve spatial resolution, which is of great value in disease diagnosis, treatment response monitoring, and prognosis prediction. This review will briefly introduce the technical principles of SMS, and summarize its current clinical applications. More importantly, we will discuss the recent technical progress and future research direction of SMS, hoping to highlight the clinical value and scientific potential of this technique.

Abstract:Larsen's syndrome is characterised by multiple joint dislocations, flat face and talipes equinovarus. There is an autosomal dominant form and also a more severe autosomal recessive form. Several types of polycystic kidney disease have been reported in children. In this report we present an infant with a severe form of Larsen's syndrome (thought to be lethal Larsen‐like), infantile‐type polycystic kidney disease, biliary dysgenesis and osteosclerosis.
