Abstract:In this study, effects of the extrusion temperature and extrusion ratio on the microstructure, precipitates and mechanical properties in Mg-7.5Gd-1.5Y-0.4Zr-0.5Ag (wt.%) alloy were studied by utilizing electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Results show that an unusual C-texture component with parallel to the extrusion direction originates from preferential grain growth during static recrystallization. The sample (E420-9), extruded at a temperature of 420 °C and an extrusion ratio of 9, exhibits the highest strength due to texture strengthening, bimodal structure and precipitate strengthening. In this sample, the existing substructure can effectively hinder dislocation gliding and twinning. After peak aging at 225 °C, precipitate chains are present and coexist with a number of disperse β′ precipitates, which further improves the strength of the sample E420-9 and maintains the better ductility. Therefore, this paper provides new insight for preparing high performance Mg alloys by combining multiple strengthening mechanisms.
