Abstract:Novel “CoCuNb” ternary catalysts with bimodal nanosized particle structure, in the absence of a generic support material, were designed and successfully tested in higher alcohol production via CO hydrogenation. The selectivities to primary alcohols with an optimized C2–C5 slate usually exceeded the 50 wt % level, and the combined selectivities to 1-alcohols/1-alkenes reached up to ∼73 wt % for CO conversions ranging between ∼5% and nearly 20%. The bimodal nanosized particle distribution, achieved through oxalate coprecipitation, contained Co–Cu particles with sizes ranging from 25 to 40 nm. Smaller particles between 4 and 8 nm were identified as Nb oxides and played the role of a structural dispersant (“spacer”) and promoter of 1-alcohol/1-olefin production. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed NbO x to contain major amounts of species with Nb in the 4+ oxidation state.

Abstract:Higher alcohols synthesis (HAS) from syngas (CO and H2) is highly desirable but remains suppressed by low CO conversion and alcohols selectivity. Herein, a solvent-free solid–liquid method was proposed to fabricate the ordered mesoporous NiMg mixed metal oxides, which served as support to confine the growth of MoS2 for HAS. Ordered mesoporous confinement can regulate the Mo-Ni interaction to significantly enhance specific surface area and dispersion of MoS2 slabs with low stacking, proper size, and dominant double-layer MoS2 stacking (~32%). As a result, the KMoS/Ni2Mg1-O exhibits excellent performance of total alcohol selectivity (56.1%), CO conversion (9.9%), and significantly improved turnover frequency (11.3 h−1) and space–time yield (STY, 50.9 mg g-1h−1) of C2+ alcohols. This work proposed a promising route to enhance CO conversion and higher alcohols selectivity in selective CO hydrogenation by confinement effect with ordered mesoporous oxides to modulate KMoS and NiMoS active sites.

Abstract:Designing and tailoring the fine structure of bimetallic nanoparticles is an essential and effective way to boost the catalytic properties. Herein, two types of Ni-Co alloys are generated on SiO2 including non-homogeneous or homogeneous form for CO methanation. The formation of homogeneous Ni-Co alloy originates from the strong interaction between Ni and Co and a small amount of CoO. Compared with non-homogeneous alloy, the homogeneous Ni-Co alloy exhibits superior CO conversion and CH4 selectivity below 380 °C, and is stable for 100 h long-term test at 400 °C in CO methanation. The electron enrichment of Ni and Co of homogeneous alloy contributes to CO dissociation, hydrogen spillover, and CO2 adsorption, which facilitates CH4 formation and the removal of deposited carbon species. This work provides a new clue for fabricating bimetallic catalysts and revealing the relationship between the fine structure of Ni-Co alloy and their catalytic performances.

Abstract:The acidity/alkalinity and structural properties of NiMgAl trimetallic oxides (MMOs) can be effectively modulated by the alkaline-etching process with various etching times, which are further used as a support to prepare KMoS-based catalysts through the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-encapsulated Mo-precursor strategy. The enriched surface anion groups in alkaline-etched MMO affect the textural properties, metal-support interaction, and sulfidation degree of the as-synthesized KMoS-based catalysts. As a result, KMoS-based catalysts using alkaline-etched MMO as supports effectively enhance the reducibility and dispersion of Mo species, which exert a positive influence on higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) performance in CO hydrogenation. A proper balance between acidity/alkalinity and structural properties in K, Mo/MMO- x catalysts can significantly enhance the alcohol selectivity in HAS from 55 to 65% (carbon selectivity). The formation of C2+ alcohols can be boosted by adol condensation with optimal acidic/basic properties via suppressing the acidity and increasing the amount of basic sites. The alkaline-etching process also significantly improves the space time yield of C2+ alcohols over unit mass of molybdenum.

Abstract:Two series of supported Co-based catalysts were prepared using a facile co-impregnation method. The catalysts were examined in a fixed bed for their ability to selectively convert syngas into higher alcohols. Co–Cu and Co–CeO2 −x sites have an excellent synergistic effect, which could terminate the growth of the carbon chain effectively for the synthesis of alcohols. Furthermore, the Co–CeO2 −x site is more beneficial for the synthesis of higher alcohols than the Cu–Co centre. The selectivity for the formation of ethanol and C1–C3 alcohols achieved using the 10Co5Ce/carbon nanotubes catalyst were 29.7% and 89.5%, respectively. In addition, the separation of the Co and CeO2 −x sites weakens the synergistic effect, and thus, causes the formation of long chain hydrocarbons. The structure–performance correlation studies suggest that the geometric structure of the catalyst likely plays an important role in determining the formation of the Co–CeO2 −x site, which influences the selectivity towards higher alcohols and higher aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts with unique geometric and electronic structure exhibit high performance compared to that of monometallic counterparts in the ethanol steam reforming (ESR). Herein, NiCo bimetals supported on CeO 2 doped MgAl 2 O 4 (NiCo/CeMgAl) with different ratio of Ni/Co were prepared for ESR. The synergies between Ni and Co in catalytic activities and ability to anti-coking were focused. The results demonstrate Co atoms trend to segregate toward the surface and are oxidized synchronously, forming the Ni-CoO hybrid surface. The reduced Ni particles are beneficial to maintain a stable catalytic activity for the C-C bonds scission, and the CoO particles formed by segregation and irreversible oxidation of Co 0 are more conducive to activation of H 2 O, the resulting OH promotes the transformation of CH x species, which significantly reduces the selectivity of CH 4 and prevents the formation of filamentous carbon. Controlling Co content and maintaining a stable M/M δ+ are critical to balance the C-C bond scission reaction and the CH 3 * conversion reaction on the NiCo bimetallic catalysts. The optimal catalyst 9Ni1Co/CeMgAl shows the ethanol conversion of 93.9 % at TOS of 100 h, and the average rate of coke formation is 0.50 mg c ·g cat -1 ·h −1 .

Abstract:The tandem hydroformylation‐hydrogenation of alkenes to corresponding alcohol is a one‐pot two‐step reaction. The objective of the present work was to design an efficient and stable heterogeneous catalyst for this transformation. To this end, a series of novel heterogeneous graphitic carbon nitride (g‐CN) supported bimetallic Rh‐Co nanoparticle catalysts (Rh‐Co/g‐CN) were prepared and subsequently evaluated on their catalytic performance for this one‐pot two‐step reaction. The lamellar structure makes Rh and Co nanoparticles with the diameters of <1 nm and 20 nm, respectively, homogeneously deposited on the surface of g‐CN layers, principally contributed to the remarkable conversion of styrene (99.9%) and chemoselectivity for alcohol (87.8%). More importantly, Co nanoparticles are found to play an important role in the improvement of the chemoselectivity for alcohol. The presence of Co can be facilely reduced in‐situ into the catalytic active species [HCo(CO)y], enhanced the hydrogenation of aldehydes to the desired alcohols. Besides the detailed investigation of the catalytic properties of Rh‐Co/g‐CN under different reaction conditions, the reuse of Rh‐Co/g‐CN was conducted for five times and no evident decrease in the activity and chemoselectivity was observed. Therefore, we expect that this work could offer an initial insight into g‐CN‐based heterogeneous catalyst on the tandem hydroformylation‐hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Highly stable SiO2-coated multiple CuFe nanoparticles (CuFe@SiO2) were prepared by combining a facile thermal decomposition and the reverse microemulsion method. In the test of CO hydrogenation for higher alcohols synthesis (HAS), it was found that the prepared CuFe@SiO2 catalyst showed higher CO conversion, C2+OH selectivity and a superior stability than those of CuFe catalyst with time on stream. This could be related to the space confined effect of the core–shell structure that inhibited the sintering and phase separation of the Cu–χ-Fe5C2 phase, known as the dual active sites for alcohols formation, which inherently improved the catalytic performance of the sample. Furthermore, the correlation between the catalytic performance and the structural evolution was also discussed.Graphical AbstractThe CuFe@SiO2 catalysts maintained the Cu–χ-Fe5C2 dual active sites without sintering and phase separation, and thus showed the higher and superior stable C2+OH selectivity.

Abstract:Ni–Co catalysts supported on MgAl 2 O 4 –CeO 2 were prepared by the sol–gel method. The solids were calcined under a reducing atmosphere to obtain Ni and/or Co active sites. The influence of the cobalt content (1, 3 and 5% w/w) was studied on bimetallic catalysts containing 8% w/w of Ni. The catalysts were characterized by TG, FTIR, S BET , AAS, XRD, TPR, TEM, EELS, EFTEM, TPO and SEM. XRD patterns of the reduced samples did not reveal the presence of Ni nor Co, nor the possible formation of a metallic alloy, which suggests that metallic crystallite sizes are smaller than the detection limit of the technique (5 nm). The catalysts were evaluated in the ethanol steam reforming reaction at 650 °C for 7 h. The results showed that the catalytic activity and the H 2 selectivity are favored in bimetallic catalysts. The main reaction products were H 2 , CO 2 , CO and, to a lesser amount, CH 4 , being the hydrogen selectivity being greater than 80%. The best behavior in terms of the activity, stability and tolerance to carbon deposition was observed in Co 3 Ni/MC system. These results suggest the existence of an optimal Co/Ni ratio in the sample whit 3 wt% Co and 8 wt% Ni.

Abstract:Activated carbon-supported Mo-Co-K sulfide catalysts, prepared by stepwise impregnation, were used in the synthesis of higher alcohols via CO2 hydrogenation. The catalysts with varying Mo contents and defined K/Mo and Co/Mo molar ratios exhibited relatively high CO2 conversions and high selectivity to total alcohols and C2+ alcohols. Moreover, the influence of calcination conditions on the sulfidation states and catalytic performance was studied. The surface sulfur runoff of the supported catalysts can be effectively suppressed by online calcination. As a result, the selectivity to total alcohols and C2+ alcohols can be improved.

Abstract:A series of Mn-doped K-Co-Mo catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method. The catalyst structure was well characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 physisorption, NH3 temperature programmed adsorption, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The catalytic performance for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas was measured. It was found that the Mn-doped catalysts exhibited a much higher activity as compared to the unpromoted catalyst, and in particular the C2+ alcohol selectivity increased significantly. The distribution of alcohol products deviated from the Anderson-Schulz-Flory law. The portion of methanol in total alcohol was suppressed remarkably and the ethanol became the predominant product. Characterization results indicated that the incorporation of Mn enhanced the interaction of Co and Mo and thus led to the formation of Co-Mo-O species, which was regarded as the active site for the alcohol synthesis. Secondly, the presence of Mn reduced the amount of strong acid sites significantly and meanwhile promoted the formation of weak acid sites, which had a positive effect on the synthesis of alcohol. Furthermore, it was found that the incorporation of Mn can enhance the adsorption of linear- and bridge-type CO significantly, which contributed to the formation of alcohol and growth of carbon chain and thus increased the selectivity to C2+OH.

Abstract:Utilization of nonprecious transition metals for high alcohols synthesis is of a great importance in heterogeneous catalysis. We synthesized successfully cobalt metal-carbide (Co–Co2C) catalysts, which present remarkable activity and selectivity for high alpha-alcohols via the Fischer–Tropsch reaction. The formation of the stable cobalt carbide and the Co–Co2C interface are found to be essential for the observed reactivity. Density functional theory calculations show that Co2C is highly efficient for CO nondissociative adsorption, behaving as noble-metal-like, whereas the Co metal is highly active for CO dissociative adsorption and the subsequent carbon-chain growth. The interface between the cobalt metal and its carbide phase, as well as the dual sites available at the interface for facile CO insertion to hydrocarbon, could be used to rationalize the design of the nonprecious transition metal catalysts for the oxygenates in syngas conversion.

Abstract:Ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets derived from layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor (1-3 cationic-layers) were successfully synthesized by aqueous miscible organic solvent treatment (AMOST) strategy and performed for ethanol and higher alcohols production via CO hydrogenation. The ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets (CuCo-LDH-aw) demonstrated a comparatively higher total alcohols (ROH) selectivity of 47.6%, and the molar fraction of ethanol reached up to 37.5% among the total alcohols. As revealed by XRD, HRTEM, SEM, BET and AFM characterizations, the uniform dispersion of CuCo NPs was observed over the ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets. Moreover, the optimum ultrathin CuCoAl nanosheets exhibited a higher ratio of Cu + /(Cu 0 +Cu + ), which exerted a positive role on non-dissociative CO * insertion CH x intermediates. More significantly, XPS and in situ CO-DRIFT techniques uncovered the formation of CH x intermediates derived from bridge CO dissociation on the metallic Co species and the formate hydrodeoxygenation route, which involved CO * and surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) reaction. Consequently, it was concluded that the triply synergistic effect of Cu + , Co and surface hydroxyl groups (-OH) species contributed to the improvement in ethanol selectivity via CO hydrogenation.

Abstract:Bimetallic Co-Cu catalysts are widely applied in higher alcohol synthesis (HAS), but the formation of the final active structure has not yet been fully clarified, especially for Co-rich catalysts. We investigated the structural evolution of a Co-Cu catalyst (Co:Cu = 2) from the hydrotalcite precursor containing additional Al3+ and Zn2+ to the final active state after 80 h under reaction conditions at 280 °C and 60 bar. The reconstruction of the bimetallic Co-Cu nanoparticles obtained by H2 reduction was induced by the feed gas consisting of an equimolar H2 and CO syngas mixture resulting in fast phase separation and sintering of metallic Cu0 and Co0 in the first 2 h time on stream (TOS) and a continuous carbidization of Co0 forming Co2C and its sintering until steady state was reached after 40 h TOS. An intergrowth of metallic Cu0 nanoparticles with Co2C nanoparticles was observed to occur under reaction conditions. The high selectivity to oxygenates amounting to 41% compared with 29% to hydrocarbons is ascribed to the multi-functional Co2C/Cu0 interface enabling dissociative CO adsorption, hydrogenation and CO insertion. The formation of hydrogenated carbon species (CxHy) originating from dissociative CO chemisorption is assumed to be favored by hydrogen spillover from Cu0 to Co2C. The adsorption sites for molecular CO provided by both Cu0 and Co2C facilitate its insertion into the CxHy intermediates thus leading to a higher selectivity to alcohols following the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of CO2 into valuable ethanol proceeds by the coupling of appropriate C-1 intermediates to form C-2-oxygenates. Matching the different C-1 intermediates is crucial for this process but is difficult to control. We found that incorporation of nickel species into the cobalt catalyst could boost the formation of relatively stable *CHx intermediate from CO2 hydrogenation, which significantly avoids an occurrence of methanation. The *CHx species subsequently insert into the *HCOO, another intermediate that is easily formed, to produce C-2-oxygenates. Following this pathway, the optimized catalyst, Co0.52Ni0.48AlOx, gives the ethanol yield at 15.8 mmol g(cat)(-1) with selectivity at 85.7% in the CO2 hydrogenation at 200 degrees C for 12 h, which even outperforms those of noble metal catalysts.

In order to address this challenge, a series of Co-Ni bimetal doped ordered mesoporous Al2O3 materials have been designed and fabricated via the one-pot evaporation induced self-assembly strategy and employed as the catalysts for CO2 methanation. It is found that the large specific surface areas (up to 260.0 m(2/)g), big pore volumes (up to 0.59 cm(3)/g), and narrow pore size distributions of these catalysts have been successfully retained after 700 degrees C calcination. The Co and Ni species are homogenously distributed among the Al2O3 matrix due to the unique advantage of the one-pot synthesis strategy. The strong interaction between metal and mesoporous framework have been formed and the severely thermal sintering of the metallic Co-Ni active centers can be successfully inhibited during the processes of catalyst reduction and 50 h CO2 methanation reaction. More importantly, the synergistic effect between Co and Ni can greatly enhance the low-temperature catalytic activity by coordinating the activation of H-2 and CO2, prominently decreasing the activation energy toward CO2 methanation. As a result, their low-temperature activities are evidently promoted. Furthermore, the effect of the Co/(Co + Ni) molar percentage ratio on the catalytic property has been also systematically investigated over these catalysts. It is found that only the catalyst with appropriate ratio (20.0%) behaves the optimum catalytic performances. Therefore, the current Co-Ni based ordered mesoporous materials promise potential catalysts for CO2 methanation. (C) 2018 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Carbon Nanotube-Supported Copper-Cobalt Catalyst for the Production of Higher Carbon Number Alcohols Through Carbon Monoxide Hydrogenation

Abstract:A series of carbon nanotube (CNTs)-supported copper-cobalt catalysts were prepared and investigated in a slurry reactor for their ability to selectively convert syngas into higher carbon number alcohols. The 7.5Cu7.5Co/CNTs catalyst achieved superior selectivity towards the formation of ethanol (30.1%) and C(2+)alcohols (57.7%), while the 10Co5Cu/CNTs catalyst exhibited the largest alcohol space-time yield (372.9 mg g(cat)(-1) h(-1)). However, the pure Cu (15Cu/CNTs) catalyst displayed negligible activity. Cobalt reduction was enhanced in the presence of copper. In addition to the Cu-0-Co-0 center, Co-0-Co2+ also presented dual active sites for higher alcohols synthesis, the Co2+ site could terminate carbon chain growth to produce alcohols. The ratio of Cu/Co considerably influences the metal particle properties-synergistically effecting the active species.
