Abstract:A kind of K–Co–Mo catalyst with large surface area, small particle size and homogenous components distribution was prepared by sol–gel method using citric acid as complexant, and characterized by XRD, BET, HR-TEM, EXAFS and TPD techniques. The activity for mixed alcohol synthesis from syngas on the catalysts was investigated. During the preparation, a gelation process was adopted to prevent the components from precipitating during the solvent extraction and keep the homogeneity and small particle size of final products. Heat-treated the dried gel in argon, the decomposition of critic acid partly reduced the sample and decreases the particle sizes remarkably. The synthesized K–Co–Mo catalyst exhibited excellent performance for mixed alcohol synthesis from CO hydrogenation, which may be due to its large surface area and small particle size creating more active sites. Beside it, the homogeneity of various components was also helpful to enhance the synergistic effect of Co promoters. The high selectivity to the C2+OH was due to the large amount of SH species adsorbed on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:A kind of K–Co–Mo/C catalyst with homogenous components distribution and small particle size was prepared by sol–gel method with citric acid as complexant. Its structure and catalytic performance for mixed alcohol synthesis were investigated. By heat treating the dried gel in argon, the decomposition of citric acid resulted in the formations of amorphous carbon and low-valence MoO 2 species. The incorporation of potassium and cobalt increased significantly the alcohol synthesis activity, especially improved the C 2+ OH selectivity. The optimal atomic composition of catalyst was: 0.10 K: 0.50 Co: 1.0 Mo. Comparing with the similar catalysts reported in literatures, the sol–gel derived K–Co–Mo catalyst showed better performance, especially much higher C 2+ OH selectivity for mixed alcohol synthesis. A 150 h reaction test indicated that the catalyst had good stability during the entire experimental period. It suggested that the homogenous components distribution and small particle size enhanced the synergistic effect of promoters and created more active species, leading to a high catalytic performance. The formation of MoO 2 species was also favorable to improve the catalytic activity because the low-valence Mo 4+ was known to be more active in CO hydrogenation.
Catalytic Properties and Structure of the K-Co-Mo Catalysts Prepared by Sol-Gel Method for Mixed Alcohol Synthesis — Effect of K Content

Abstract:A kind of Co\|Mo complex oxide has been successfully prepared by the sol\|gel method with citric acid as complexant, which has been promoted with different K loadings by impregnating method and then sulfided. The activity over the sulfided samples for the synthesis of mixed alcohols from CO hydrogenation was investigated in the conditions of p=\{5.0 MPa,\} T=310 ℃ and GHSV=4 800 h -1 . The results show that the optimum K content is K/Mo (atomic ratio) =0.4, on which the space\|time\|yield and the selectivity toward mixed alcohols are obviously higher than the published results. The structures of the oxidic and sulfided samples were characterized by XRD and LRS. The results from XRD show that Co\|Mo complex oxide exists as the CoMoO 4 phase. While K 2CO 3 is added, the CoMoO 4 phase is destroyed and some K\|Mo\|O species are formed. After sulfidation, Co species exist as Co 9S 8 and Mo as MoS 2 crystallites. Potassium promoter can stabilize the sulfided states, but excessive potassium covers the active sites on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:A series of activated-carbon-supported K-Co-Mo catalysts (K-Co-Mo/AC) were prepared by using a solgel method combined with incipient wetness impregnation. The catalyst structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their catalytic performance toward synthesis of higher alcohols from syngas was investigated. The large surface area and pore volume of the support facilitated the distribution of metal particles and high dispersion of metals. At low Mo loading, the Mo atoms on the activated carbon surface were mainly tetrahedrally coordinated Mo6+ species. With an increase in the Mo loading, the coordination environment of the surface Mo atoms gradually transformed from tetrahedrally coordinated Mo6+ to octahedrally coordinated Mo4+, indicating that an increase in the Mo loading promoted the reduction of Mo6+ species to Mo4+ species. After reduction, it was observed that a type of a lower state Mo delta+ (1 < delta < 4) species was present on the surface, which is suggested to be responsible for alcohol synthesis. Compared to the unsupported catalyst, K-Co-Mo/AC exhibited a significantly higher activity for alcohol formation. In particular, the C2+ alcohol content increased significantly. This can be attributed to the fact that the supported catalysts have a high active surface area, and the mesoporous structure is suggested to prolong the residence time of intermediates to form alcohols in the pores to some extent, thus promoting the formation of higher alcohols. Under the conditions of a Mo/AC weight ratio of 40% and a reduction temperature of 798 K, the K-Co-Mo/AC catalyst exhibited the highest activity for alcohol formation, which may be attributed to the high content of Mo delta+ (1 < delta < 4) species on the surface.

Abstract:The structures of sulfided Co–Mo–K/C catalysts were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser Raman spectra (LRS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Activities for alcohol synthesis via CO hydrogenation were used to characterize the catalytic performance of these catalysts. On the activated carbon support, molybdenum is mainly present as MoS2 species which shrinks with the cobalt loading, while cobalt is mainly present in the form of “Co–Mo–S” phase at the low Co loading and partly in a Co9S8-like structure at higher Co loading. The catalysts exhibit outstanding performance for higher alcohol synthesis due to the addition of the promotion of cobalt. The activity for alcohol formation is optimized at a Co/Mo atomic ratio of 0.5. Co species operate as a synergistic system, rather than independently from the MoS2 phase.

Abstract:A series of Mn-doped K-Co-Mo catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method. The catalyst structure was well characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 physisorption, NH3 temperature programmed adsorption, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The catalytic performance for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas was measured. It was found that the Mn-doped catalysts exhibited a much higher activity as compared to the unpromoted catalyst, and in particular the C2+ alcohol selectivity increased significantly. The distribution of alcohol products deviated from the Anderson-Schulz-Flory law. The portion of methanol in total alcohol was suppressed remarkably and the ethanol became the predominant product. Characterization results indicated that the incorporation of Mn enhanced the interaction of Co and Mo and thus led to the formation of Co-Mo-O species, which was regarded as the active site for the alcohol synthesis. Secondly, the presence of Mn reduced the amount of strong acid sites significantly and meanwhile promoted the formation of weak acid sites, which had a positive effect on the synthesis of alcohol. Furthermore, it was found that the incorporation of Mn can enhance the adsorption of linear- and bridge-type CO significantly, which contributed to the formation of alcohol and growth of carbon chain and thus increased the selectivity to C2+OH.

Abstract:A series of Mo-Co-K sulfide catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation, and their catalytic performance in CO2 hydrogenation to C2+ alcohols and other products was studied. The catalysts with K/Mo molar ratio of 0.3-1.2 and Co/Mo Molar ratio of 1.0 showed relatively high CO2 conversions and high selectivities to total alcohols and C2+ alcohols. Under optimal reaction conditions (320 degrees C, 12.0 MPa, and 3000 ml/(g h)), the CO2 total conversion and CO2 conversion free of CO reached 28.8% and 12.6%, respectively, over Mo1Co1K0.8 sulfide, and the corresponding selectivities to alcohols and C2+ alcohols (free of CO) are 81.8% and 10.9%, respectively. The catalytic performance can be modified by the addition of SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, or activated carbon to Mot Col Km sulfide during the synthesis. The physicochemical properties of the modified catalysts were characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, XPS, CO2-TPD, and H-2-TPD. In particular, the activated carbon-modified catalyst has a stronger interaction between Mo and Co, more Mo4+ content on catalyst surface, and appropriate ability for adsorbing CO2 and H-2, which may be beneficial for achieving high selectivity to C2+ alcohols. Abstract:The nanosheets structured K–Co–MoS2 catalyst was prepared through a one-step hydrothermal synthesis combined with the wetness impregnation. The fresh catalyst has a high dispersion of Co–Mo–S active phase and no Co9S8 is found. The pure H2 activated catalyst shows a higher intrinsic activity, especially the C2+OH selectivity for the higher alcohol synthesis compared to the one activated by 5% H2/N2 atmosphere. The reason is attributed to that the pure H2 activation more effectively suppresses the formation of Co9S8 and stabilizes the Co–Mo–S active phase during the reaction due to the formation of SH species.

Abstract:Activated carbon-supported Mo-Co-K sulfide catalysts, prepared by stepwise impregnation, were used in the synthesis of higher alcohols via CO2 hydrogenation. The catalysts with varying Mo contents and defined K/Mo and Co/Mo molar ratios exhibited relatively high CO2 conversions and high selectivity to total alcohols and C2+ alcohols. Moreover, the influence of calcination conditions on the sulfidation states and catalytic performance was studied. The surface sulfur runoff of the supported catalysts can be effectively suppressed by online calcination. As a result, the selectivity to total alcohols and C2+ alcohols can be improved.

Abstract:Improving the C2+ alcohols selectivity is the most difficult challenge in higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) from syngas. Herein, three effective strategies were combined to develop a Mo-based catalyst for HAS. The sol-gel method produced a highly homogeneous distribution of components, which ensured intimate and sufficient contact between different active sites. The incorporation of Mn oxide enhanced the interaction between Co and Mo and thus promoted the growth of the alcohol chain. More importantly, the reduction degrees of Co and Mo can be tuned precisely. The prepared Mn/K/Co/Mo catalysts show unusual activity for HAS.

The high activity of the catalyst reduced at 773 K may be attributed to the, high content of Mo delta+ (1<delta<4) species on the surface, which was regarded as the active site for the adsorption of nondissociative CO and responsible for the alcohol formation.
Ordered mesoporous NiMg bimetal oxides confined KMoS catalyst for selective CO hydrogenation into higher alcohols

Abstract:Higher alcohols synthesis (HAS) from syngas (CO and H2) is highly desirable but remains suppressed by low CO conversion and alcohols selectivity. Herein, a solvent-free solid–liquid method was proposed to fabricate the ordered mesoporous NiMg mixed metal oxides, which served as support to confine the growth of MoS2 for HAS. Ordered mesoporous confinement can regulate the Mo-Ni interaction to significantly enhance specific surface area and dispersion of MoS2 slabs with low stacking, proper size, and dominant double-layer MoS2 stacking (~32%). As a result, the KMoS/Ni2Mg1-O exhibits excellent performance of total alcohol selectivity (56.1%), CO conversion (9.9%), and significantly improved turnover frequency (11.3 h−1) and space–time yield (STY, 50.9 mg g-1h−1) of C2+ alcohols. This work proposed a promising route to enhance CO conversion and higher alcohols selectivity in selective CO hydrogenation by confinement effect with ordered mesoporous oxides to modulate KMoS and NiMoS active sites.

Abstract:The K–Co–Mo/C catalysts with different molar ratios of Co/Mo and reduction temperatures were prepared by a sol–gel method and characterized by the means of XRD, H2-TPR, XPS and in situ DRIFTS. The addition of moderate amount of cobalt can promote the reduction of Mo species to Moδ+ species. With increasing the Co content, the CO adsorption strength on Moδ+ species increased and was up to the maximum when Co/Mo=0.5. Further increasing the Co content led to the decrease of surface Moδ+ species because that the formation of CoMoO3 inhibited the further reduction of Mo4+ species. Increasing the reduction temperature resulted in the decrease of the surface cobalt content significantly. The CO adsorption strength on Moδ+ species reached a maximum at 773K. Higher reduction temperature caused the decrease of CO adsorption strength because of the sintering of catalyst. It suggested that the surface Moδ+ species is responsible for the alcohol synthesis. The high activity of the K–Co–Mo/C catalysts with Co/Mo ratio of 0.5 for alcohol synthesis should be attributed to its high Moδ+ content on the surface.
Influence of Co Modified Mn/Cu/MgO Catalyst on the Synthesis of Mixed Alcohols from Syngas

Abstract:Co modified Mn/Cu/MgO catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and were characterized by means of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption technique, X-ray diffraction(XRD), CO temperature-programmed desorption(CO-TPD), H2temperature-programmed reduce(H2-TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The catalyst performance on the synthesis of mixed alcohols from syngas were investigated. The results indicated that Co2Mg and MnCo2O4 phase was formed, which facilitated the dispersion of the Cu, Mn and Mg species after adding the element of Co to Mn/Cu/MgO catalyst. Compared with the catalyst without Co, when the molar ratio of Co to Cu was 0.3, the selectivity ratio of C2+OH to C1OH and the space time yield of C2+OH increased from 0.31 to 3.12 and 9.07 g/(kg·h) to 28.83 g/(kg·h), respectively.The addition of promoter Co remarkably promoted the carbon insertion ability, which improved the selectivity of C2+OH in this reaction, and the catalyst showed high stability.

Abstract:Activated carbon supported Mo-based catalysts were prepared and reduced under different activation atmospheres, including pure H-2, syngas (H-2/CO=2/1), and pure CO. The catalysts structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption fine structure, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The catalytic performance for the higher alcohol synthesis from syngas was tested. The pure H-2 treatment showed a high reduction capacity. The presence of a large amount of metallic Co-0 and low valence state Mo phi+ (0<phi<2) on the surface suggested a super activity for the CO dissociation and hydrogenation, which promoted hydrocarbons formation and reduced the alcohol selectivity. In contrast, the pure CO-reduced catalyst had a low reduction degree. The Mo and Co species at the catalyst mainly existed in the form of Mo4+ and Co2+. The syngas-reduced catalyst showed the highest activity and selectivity for the higher alcohols synthesis. We suggest that the syngas treatment had an appropriate reduction capacity that is between those of pure H-2 and pure CO and led to the coexistence of multivalent Co species as well as the enrichment of Mo delta+ On the catalyst's surface. The synergistic effects between these active species provided a better cooperativity and equilibrium between the CO dissociation, hydrogenation and CO insertion and thus contributed beneficially to the formation of higher alcohols.
