Abstract:The paper is a personal perspective on the design of metallic ultra-high temperature materials (UHTMs). Specifically, the alloy design “landscape” of metallic UHTMs was considered from the viewpoint of the alloy design methodology NICE. The concepts of synergy, entanglement and self-regulation and their significance for alloy design/development were discussed. The risks, ecological challenges and material-environment interactions associated with the development of metallic UHTMs were highlighted. The “landscape” showed that beneath the complexities of alloy design lies an elegant and powerful unity of specific parameters that link logically and that progress can be made by recognising those interrelationships between parameters that generate interesting, diverse, and complex alloys.

Abstract:Refractory metals and their carbides possess extraordinary properties when subjected to high temperatures and extreme environments. Consequently, they can act as key material systems for advancing many sectors, including space, energy and defence. However, it has been difficult to process these materials using the conventional routes of manufacturing. Additive manufacturing (AM) has shown a lot of potential to overcome the challenges and develop new material systems with tailored properties. This review provides a fundamental understanding of the challenges in the processing of refractory metals and their carbides, including microcracking, formation of brittle oxide phases and high ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT). We also highlight some of the novel approaches that have been taken to improve the processability of these challenging material systems using AM. These include in-situ reactive printing, ultrasonic vibration, laser beam shaping, multi-laser deposition and substrate pre-heating with a focus on microstructural changes to improve the properties of printed parts.

For example, alloys based on iron aluminides have good anti-corrosion properties and oxidation resistance due to formation of aluminum oxide, as well as low cost. Iron aluminides belong to a class of especially light promising structural materials and are used in mechanical engineering, metallurgy and electrical engineering.

Abstract:This Special Issue highlights the last decade's progress regarding new nanostructured materials. In this regard, the development of nanoscale syntheses and innovative characterization tools that resulted in the tailored design of nanostructured materials with versatile abilities in many applications were investigated. Various types of engineered nanostructures, usually metal nanoparticles or nanoporous metal oxides, have been synthesized for various applications. This Special Issue covers the state-of-the-art of advanced nanoparticles in many disciplines (chemistry, pharmacy, nanomedicine, agriculture, catalysis, and environmental science). The crystallite sizes depended on the annealing temperature and type of doping ion. A combination of rigid and soft particles could simultaneously enhance both the tensile properties and the fracture toughness, which could not be achieved by the single-phase particles independently. The surface charge and in vitro corrosion resistance are key parameters characterizing biomaterials in the interaction of the implant with the biological environment. Solar energy in the presence of a photocatalyst can be effectively converted into electricity/fuel, break down chemical and microbial pollutants, and help water purification. The saturation magnetization, remanent magnetizations, coercivity, and anisotropy were found to depend on the doping ion, annealing temperature, and particle size. The efficiency of the photocatalysis reaction depends on several factors, including light absorption capacity/light intensity, the type of photocatalyst used, the concentration of a photocatalyst and contaminant particles, the pH of the reaction medium, etc. The variety of color pigments and coloring properties of the targeted application in the ceramic industry was also of interest.

Abstract:In the quest of new materials that can withstand severe irradiation and mechanical extremes for advanced applications (e.g. fission reactors, fusion devices, space applications, etc), design, prediction and control of advanced materials beyond current material designs become a paramount goal. Here, though a combined experimental and simulation methodology, the design of a new nanocrystalline refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) system is established. Compositions of this alloy, assessed under extreme environments and in situ electron-microscopy, revealed both high mechanical strength and thermal stability, grain refinement under heavy ion irradiation and outstanding irradiation resistance to dual-beam irradiation and helium implantation, marked by remarkable resistance to defect generation, growth and coalescence. The experimental and modeling results, which demonstrated notable agreement, can be applied to design and rapidly assess other alloys subjected to extreme environmental conditions.

Abstract:The ten articles [1–10] included in this Special Issue on “Liquid Metals” do not intend to comprehensively cover this extensive field, but, rather, to highlight recent discoveries that have greatly broadened the scope of technological applications of these materials. Improvements in understanding the physics of liquid metals are, to a large extent, due to the powerful theoretical tools in the hands of scientists, either semi-empirical [1,5,6] or ab initio (molecular dynamics, see [7]). Surface tension and wetting at metal/ceramic interfaces is an everlasting field of fundamental research with important technological implications. The review of [2] is broad enough, as the work carried out at Grenoble covers almost all interesting matters in the field. Some issues of interest in geophysics and astrophysics are discussed in [3]. The recently discovered liquid–liquid transition in several metals is dealt with in [4]. The fifth contribution [5] discusses the role of icosahedral superclusters in crystallization. In [6], thermodynamic calculations are carried out to identify the regions of the ternary phase diagram of Al-Cu-Y, where the formation of amorphous alloys is most probable. Experimental data and ab initio calculations are presented in [7] to show that an optimal microstructure is obtained if Mg is added to the Al-Si melt before than the modifier AlP alloy. Shock-induced melting of metals by means of laser driven compression is discussed in [8]. With respect to recent discoveries, one of the most outstanding developments is that of gallium alloys that are liquid at room temperature [9], and that, due to the oxide layer that readily cover their surface, maintain some “stiffness”. This has opened the possibility of 3D printing with liquid metals. The last article in this Special Issue [10] describes nano-liquid metals, a suspension of liquid metal and its alloy containing nanometer-sized particles. A room-temperature nano-liquid metal and its alloys were first introduced in the area of cooling high heat flux devices, which now is a commercial reality. However, their applications are not only in chip cooling, and can also be extended to waste heat recovery, kinetic energy harvesting, thermal interface material, etc. This is mainly due to properties such as low melting point, high thermal and electrical conductivity, as well as other additional physical or chemical properties.
