Abstract:Aiming to obtain a martensite-free microstructure of Ti–Zr alloys with a combination of enhanced deformability and improved mechanical properties for dental application, two high Zr-containing Ti-based alloys were prepared with commercially pure titanium as a control. The effects of Zr addition on the deformation mechanism, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. After thermo-mechanical processing and cold deformation, samples were characterized using Vickers microhardness, tensile tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD and TEM examinations revealed that the increasing Zr addition suppressed the deformation twining and favored the deformation-induced face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, the corresponding reason was discussed. There is a competition between the deformation twin and FCC phase. The two types of FCC phase were simultaneously found with orientation relationships (ORs) of Basal-type: <11–20>HCP//<110>FCC and {0001}HCP//{111}FCC and Prismatic-type: <0001>HCP//<001>FCC and {10-10}HCP//{110}FCC. This phase transformation enhanced the deformability during processing. As the Zr addition increased, the microhardness, mechanical strength and plasticity are increased concurrently. The interactions of twins were found to cause brittle fracture of Ti20Zr alloy. Based on the texture analysis, the activated slip systems of FCC phase were determined via calculating the Schmid factor. The FCC phase not only provided additional slip systems but also impeded dislocation slip effectively, improving the strength-plasticity of Ti30Zr alloy. The findings will provide a novel approach associated with the strengthening-toughening mechanism of metallic materials.

Abstract:In this study, two medium Zr-containing Ti-based alloys with commercially pure titanium as control were systematically investigated to assess their potential biomedical application. After samples subjected to TMP and CR, it was found that the Zr addition significantly affected the microstructure, phase constitutions, mechanical properties and cytocompatibility. The microstructural results showed that increasing Zr concentrations resulted in more refined grains. Furthermore, Zr changed the phase constitution: CR Ti–20Zr was formed by the single α-phase while CR Ti–30Zr alloy was formed by the coexistence of α and deformation-induced FCC phases. The P-type FCC phase was dominant and more prone to occur than the B-type one. The mechanical tests demonstrated that the increasing Zr content led to a simultaneous increase in micro-hardness, strength and plasticity of CR samples due to the combined effects of solution strengthening, work hardening and the FCC phase. The SEM fractography indicated that the brittle fracture of CR Ti–20Zr due to deformation twins and ductile fracture of CR Ti–30Zr because of FCC phase. Furthermore, Ti–Zr alloys presented comparable cytocompatibility to the CP-Ti control based on cell viability, proliferation and intracellular O2− content of MSCs. Specifically, alkaline phosphatase activity in BMSCs were significantly higher for grain refined CR Ti–30Zr. Considering all these results, CR Ti–30Zr alloy exhibited the optimal comprehensive performance to be potential dental materials.

Abstract:Atoms of zirconium (Zr) are often known as "first metals of the atomic age". Because of its low cross section for thermal neutron absorption, excellent corrosion resistance, and good mechanical and processing properties, it is extensively used in the nuclear industry. As the properties requirements of materials in chemical, medical and aerospace fields turn out to be higher, the application of Zr alloys in these non-nuclear fields has become more and more widespread due to their excellent properties. In addition to having a high melting point, Zr alloys also have a high specific strength and low thermal expansion coefficient. Therefore, Zr alloys have a very promising application in corrosion-resistant structural materials. This paper mainly introduces the development status of Zr alloys, the design and optimization of Zr alloy compositions, the mechanism of Zr alloy toughening and the prospects of Zr alloy applications in various fields.
Improved Strength and Enhanced Pitting Corrosion Resistance of Al-Mn Alloy with Zr Addition

Abstract:Automotive heat exchanger materials with high strength and excellent corrosion resistance performance are highly required due to the increasing demands of weight reduction and fuel economy. In this work, 0.16 wt% Zr was added into a Al-1.5Mn-0.3Fe-0.6Si-0.5Cu(wt.%) alloy for the improvement of the related performance. The microstructure, mechanical properties and electrochemical properties were investigated. The results indicate that Zr addition can decrease grain size and increase the volume fraction of low angle boundaries (LAGBs) in the alloy. The improved strength derives from finer grain sizes and Al3Zr particle. The enhanced pitting corrosion resistance mainly results from the higher volume fraction of LAGBs and smaller grain sizes. The effect of zirconium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a super-high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy

Abstract:Recently, a new super-high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy with Zr bearing was developed in BIAM(Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials, China). In this paper, the effect of microalloying element Zr on the precipitation, microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy was investigated. It is found that the influence of Zr on the precipitation is remarkable and the strength of the alloy increases with the content of zirconium. The elongation reaches to a peak and the strength has a sharp increase accordingly when the content of Zr is 0.06%(mass fraction). Using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), the fracture behavior was studied. The result shows that the fracture mechanism of the alloy is converted from intergranular brittle to transgranular ductile model with the change of the content of zirconium. Finally, the optimum content of Zr in the alloy was proposed.

Abstract:This work investigates the nanotribological and corrosion performances of a Zr56Co28Al16 alloy in its crystalline and amorphous configuration. The corrosion and tribological performances of the investigated alloy are excellent regardless of the structure. In both amorphous and crystalline cases, the alloy surface is covered by a Zr-rich mixed oxide layer, extending the adhesive friction domain and suppressing abrasive wear. Moreover, the native mixed oxide offers durable protection against corrosion in aqueous NaCl or HCl solutions.

Abstract:An advanced fluorination technique has been developed for improving the electrochemical, performances of Zr-based AB(2) alloys. During the procedure, alloys were ball milled in a complex fluoride solution. It was found that the electrode of the treated alloy exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. Its activation property and high-rate discharge capability were found to be satisfactory compared with the conventional AB(5)-based electrodes. The electrode demonstrated a significant decrease of the reaction resistance measured by an impedance spectrometric method. The F-treated alloy was found to give a larger specific surface area and to form a highly Ni-covered surface. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effect of Zr addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of cast Nb–22Ti–16Si–xZr (x=0–4) alloys was investigated. The results show that the Zr addition leads to coarseness of primary Nbss phase promotes formation and coarseness of Nbss and γ(Nb)5Si3 lamellar eutectic structure. In addition, the Zr addition increases the hardness of Nbss and (Nb)3Si phases. The yield strength at room temperature of the alloys improves with increasing Zr content. The fracture strain reaches a peak value in 3at.% Zr content, and then drops with the increase of Zr content. The high temperature strength decreases first and reaches a minimal value in 3at.% Zr content, and then increases again. These variations are attributed to the microstructure and composition changes of the alloys with increasing Zr content.

Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical proprieties of AlCoCrFeNiZrx high-entropy alloy at different Zrcontent was studied through XRD, SEM, DSC and room temperature compression experiment test etc. Results show that: with the increase of Zr content, BCC phase relative increase, Laves phase relative decrease. Thermal analysis show that alloys spinodal decomposition phase transition point at about 1152 degrees C. In a certain range, with Zr content increasing their yield strength is increased. However, with Zr content increasing their fracture strength is decreased. Alloys are typical quasi cleavage fracture.

Abstract:Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy, as an important lightweight structural material in the aerospace field, has ushered in a broader application space and proposed higher performance requirements. This paper presents the experimental investigation of the effect of Zr content on the microstructure refinement and performance improvement of cast Al-5.8Zn-2.3Mg-1.7Cu alloy, aiming to optimize the additional amount of Zr, refine the alloy grains, and improve the microstructure uniformity and mechanical properties. The chemical component, phase, and microstructure were observed by inductively coupled plasma, X-ray diffraction, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope; the hardness and mechanical properties were measured by Brinell hardness tester and tensile testing machine. The addition of different contents of Zr into the alloy can form fine dispersed or primary coarse Al3Zr phase, which has a significant effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy. The results indicate that the addition of 0.05 wt% Zr does not significantly improve the grain refinement and mechanical properties, but the Brinell hardness reaches the maximum. As the Zr content rises, the grain refinement effect becomes more obvious, while the mechanical properties first increase and then decrease. The addition amount reaches 0.20 wt%, the second dendrite arm spacing is the smallest, the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation at room temperature reach the maximum of 296.74 MPa, 249.41 MPa and 8.26%, respectively. When the amount of Zr added exceeds 0.20 wt%, the existence of coarse and brittle primary Al3Zr phase reduces the mechanical properties, and the fracture morphology changes from ductile to brittle intergranular fracture.

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical property of Al–0.30Zr, Al–0.30Zr–0.08Y and Al–0.30Zr–0.16Y (wt%) alloys were investigated. Minor addition of Y refines the grain size and forms the eutectic Al3Y phase particles within grains and at grain boundaries in as-cast Al–Zr–Y alloys. The increase of Y additions results in larger amount and particle size of Al3Y in Al–Zr–Y. The decomposition of solid solution leads to a high number density of secondary L12-structured Al3(Zr,Y) precipitates within dendritic regions in Al–Zr–Y during isothermal aging at 450°C. The precipitate-free regions in grains and adjacent to grain boundaries in Al–Zr–Y alloys are narrower than that in Al–Zr. The mechanical property of Al–Zr alloys gets improved with increasing Y-content. The Al–0.30Zr–0.08Y alloys show improved recrystallization resistance compared with Al–0.30Zr. However, excess Y-addition, e.g. 0.16%, is detrimental to the recrystallization resistance of Al–Zr alloys due to the particle simulate nucleation (PSN) induced by micron-sized Al3Y phase.
Influence of Zr Microalloying on the Microstructure and Room-/High-Temperature Mechanical Properties of an Al–Cu–Mn–Fe Alloy

Abstract:Here, 0.3 wt.%Zr was introduced in an Al-4 wt.%Cu-0.5 wt.%Mn-0.1 wt.%Fe alloy to investigate its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy. The microstructures of both as-cast and T6-treated Al–Cu–Mn–Fe (ACMF) and Al–Cu–Mn–Fe–Zr (ACMFZ) alloys were analyzed. The intermetallic compounds formed through the casting procedure include Al2Cu and Al7Cu2Fe, and the Al2Cu phase dissolves into the matrix and re-precipitates as θ′ phase during the T6 process. The introduction of Zr results in the precipitation of L12-Al3Zr nanometric precipitates after T6, while the θ′ precipitates in ACMFZ alloy are much finer than those in ACMF alloy. The L12-Al3Zr precipitates were found coherently located with θ′, which was assumed beneficial for stabilizing the θ′ precipitates during the high-temperature tensile process. The tensile properties of ACMF and ACMFZ alloys at room temperature and elevated temperatures (200, 300, and 400 °C) were tested. Especially, the yield strength of ACMFZ alloys can reach 128 MPa and 65 MPa at 300 °C and 400 °C, respectively, which are 31% and 33% higher than those of ACMF alloys. The strengthening mechanisms of grain size, L12-Al3Zr, and θ′ precipitates on the tensile properties were discussed. This work may be referred to for designing Al–Cu alloys for application in high-temperature fields.

Abstract:The rare earth scandium (Sc) as a microalloying element has attracted an increasing interest in aluminum alloys for achieving excellent mechanical properties. Combining with zirconium, high strength and low price Al–Sc alloys are expected. The effects of Sc and Zr on the grain refinement, recrystallization resistance and precipitation hardening were investigated in new type of Al–Zn–Mg–Sc–Zr alloys by rolling, annealing and aging processes. Scandium addition into the Al–Zn–Mg alloys can efficiently refine the grain size and increase recrystallization resistance, especially together with zirconium addition. The maximum value of the yield-to-tensile strength (627MPa/667MPa) was obtained with 0.2Sc/0.4Zr ratio of the alloy after solution-aging treatment. The additional strengthening of the alloys is attributed to the grain refinement and the precipitation-strengthening effect of Al3Sc, Al3Zr or Al3(Sc, Zr) in the proper ratio of Sc/Zr during aging.

Abstract:The effects of Zr addition on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of extruded Al-Cu-Li-Mn alloy were investigated during heat treatment processing. The recrystallization and grain growth were profoundly inhibited in solid solution-treated (SST) Al-Cu-Li-Mn-Zr alloy (Zr-containing), and massive substructures were retained, which were attributed to the higher Zener pinning pressure provided by Al 3 Zr dispersoids. But, complete recrystallization and considerable grain growth occurred in SST Al-Cu-Li-Mn alloy (Zr-free). Besides, the deformation textures containing Brass and S components were predominant in Zr-containing alloy, which contributed to a higher average Talyor factor ( M ) value. The higher strength behavior in SST Zr-containing alloy mainly originated from the extra Al 3 Zr dispersoids apart from the higher M value and dislocation density. The higher dislocation density and Al 3 Zr dispersoids in Zr-containing alloy promoted the precipitation of T1 phases and narrowed the width of precipitate-free zones (PFZs). Compared with Zr-free alloy, the enhanced combination of good strength and ductility shown in T6-aged Zr-containing alloy was mostly due to the higher T1 phase density and M value, higher dislocation density, and extra Al 3 Zr dispersoids.

Abstract:In this study, amorphous/nanocrystalline TiAlCrNbZr x (x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, 1) multi-component alloy films have been successfully prepared on the surface of 316L stainless steel using direct current magnetron sputtering technique. The composition, microstructure, corrosion and mechanical properties , especially the effect of Zr content and structure on the properties, are discussed in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data revealed the presence of nanocrystalline phases among the amorphous phase. The results showed that the amorphous phase can effectively mitigate corrosion, while the nanocrystals can improve the mechanical properties and adhesion of the films as the Zr content increased. The lattice distortion caused by the incorporation of large atomic Zr contributed to a significant change in the film structure. TiAlCrNbZr films with the most nanocrystals showed better plastic deformation ability, while TiAlCrNbZr0.3 has a suitable amorphous/nanocrystal ratio, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-0.35Fe alloys with a series of different zirconium (Zr) additions from 0.1 to 0.4% are investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and tensile testing. The as-cast structure of the alloys varies with the Zr content. When the content of Zr is 0.1%, Zr dissolves into the aluminum (Al) matrix completely and iron (Fe) concentrates along the boundary in a network of eutectic Al3Fe. With the increase in Zr content to 0.2% and above, nanoscale Al3Zr particles appear in the alloy. With the Zr content increasing from 0.1 to 0.4%, the grain size of the Al matrix decreases from 73 to 23 μm. The morphology of the eutectic Al3Fe phase changes from short rod-like to an agglomerated structure consisting of finer and shorter rod-like shapes. The tensile and yield strengths increase while the total elongation decreases with increasing Zr content. The strengthening mechanism of the alloy can be attributed to the combination of fine-grain, solution and second-phase strengthening.

Abstract:The influence of Cr addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of Zr-based alloys corresponding to Zr-C-Cr system was investigated. In the alloy without Cr, the second-phase ZrC particles show the dispersed distribution in the alpha Zr matrix. The alloys with Cr addition contain alpha Zr, carbide ZrC and intermetallic alpha ZrCr2 phases. The microstructural observation indicates that ZrC particles present mainly the dispersed distribution in the alpha Zr matrix, and alpha ZrCr2 phases present the dispersed and network distribution. The Cr-added alloys exhibit the dispersed and network hybrid second-phases distribution, and show significant increase of hardness and strength compared with pure Zr and single ZrC dispersed alloy. The hardness and compressive strength of Zr-based alloys increase with the Cr content increasing. The microstructural formation and strengthening mechanism of Cr-added Zr-based alloys are also discussed in details. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effects of zirconium addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg97Y2Zn1 alloy were investigated. The microstructure of as-cast Mg97Y2Zn1 alloy is refined by the addition of zirconium. During the extrusion, the initial nucleation sites of the alloy are mainly original grain boundaries and secondary phase. The addition of zirconium could stimulate the DRX process because more grain boundaries are formed, which increases the dynamic recrystallization rate. Both the strength and elongation of the alloy are increased by the addition of zirconium.

Abstract:Effects of Zr addition on the microstructure, mechanical and electrochemical properties of Al-Mn-Si-Zn alloy were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations reveal that, in as-annealled state, the precipitates in the Zr-containing alloy are finer and more dispersive than those in the Zr-free alloy. Whereas, in simulated brazing state, a weaker precipitation is found in the Zr-containing alloy. Tensile testing results indicate that, with Zr additon, comprehensive mechanical properties of the as-annealed alloys could be significantly improved but weakened for the simulated brazing alloy. Electrochemical testing results reveal that, with Zr addition, the corrosion resistance of the as-annealed alloy decreases. However, after the simulated brazing treatment, such a negative effect of Zr element on the corrosion behavior of the alloy could be negligible.
