Abstract:Refractory high-entropy alloys, which involve the mixing of four or more refractory metal elements in an equiatomic or near-equiatomic ratio, hold significant potential for various applications in high-temperature materials fields. This is mainly due to their stable phase structure and excellent high-temperature properties. While considerable interest has been in these alloys, most of them have been developed using melting casting technology. However, powder metallurgy has emerged as a promising alternative for further advancement in this field. It has the potential to expand the application areas and enhance the properties of these alloys. This article introduces to various techniques for fabricating pre-alloyed refractory high-entropy powders and their densification. Additionally, it reviews the methods for regulating the microstructure and properties of powder metallurgy refractory high-entropy alloys.

Abstract:In the past decade, multi-principal element high-entropy alloys (referred to as high-entropy alloys, HEAs) are an emerging alloy material, which has been developed rapidly and has become a research hotspot in the field of metal materials. It breaks the alloy design concept of one or two principal elements in traditional alloys. It is composed of five or more principal elements, and the atomic percentage (at.%) of each element is greater than 5% but not more than 35%. The high-entropy effect caused by the increase of alloy principal elements makes the crystals easy form body-centered cubic or face-centered cubic structures, and may be accompanied by intergranular compounds and nanocrystals, to achieve solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and dispersion strengthening. The optimized design of alloy composition can make HEAs exhibit much better than traditional alloys such as high-strength steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, and nickel-based superalloy in terms of high strength, high hardness, high-temperature oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance. At present, refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) containing high-melting refractory metal elements have excellent room temperature and high-temperature properties, and their potential high-temperature application value has attracted widespread attention in the high-temperature field. This article reviews the research status and preparation methods of RHEAs and analyzes the microstructure in each system and then summarizes the various properties of RHEAs, including high strength, wear resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, etc., and the common property tuning methods of RHEAs are explained, and the existing main strengthening and toughening mechanisms of RHEAs are revealed. This knowledge will help the on-demand design of RHEAs, which is a crucial trend in future development. Finally, the development and application prospects of RHEAs are prospected to guide future research.

Abstract:In the quest of new materials that can withstand severe irradiation and mechanical extremes for advanced applications (e.g. fission reactors, fusion devices, space applications, etc), design, prediction and control of advanced materials beyond current material designs become a paramount goal. Here, though a combined experimental and simulation methodology, the design of a new nanocrystalline refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) system is established. Compositions of this alloy, assessed under extreme environments and in situ electron-microscopy, revealed both high mechanical strength and thermal stability, grain refinement under heavy ion irradiation and outstanding irradiation resistance to dual-beam irradiation and helium implantation, marked by remarkable resistance to defect generation, growth and coalescence. The experimental and modeling results, which demonstrated notable agreement, can be applied to design and rapidly assess other alloys subjected to extreme environmental conditions.

Abstract:Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) have emerged as frontier materials for high-temperature structural applications due to their exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and in-depth summary of the latest research progress in the field of RHEAs. By systematically analyzing 253 publications since 2022, this review presents a panoramic overview of the current research status in the field of RHEAs, covering aspects from alloy design, microstructure, processing techniques, mechanical behavior, to physicochemical properties. Key strengthening and toughening mechanisms, such as solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and grain boundary strengthening, are extensively analyzed. The high-temperature mechanical performance, oxidation resistance, and adaptability of RHEAs in extreme environments including corrosion and irradiation, are critically reviewed, and the potential application value of these research findings in aerospace, nuclear energy, biomedical, and other fields is discussed. Simultaneously, the multidisciplinary characteristics of RHEAs research has revealed the trend of the field evolving from fundamental research to practical applications. Furthermore, with the aid of advanced characterization techniques and computational methods, the review elucidates the controlling effects of chemical short-range order, defect structures, and other factors on the performance evolution of RHEAs, highlighting the importance of multi-principal element synergistic effects. Based on summarizing the key scientific issues and technological bottlenecks faced by RHEAs, the article provides a forward-looking perspective on future research directions, emphasizing development strategies that integrate computation and experiments, and accelerate the transformation of fundamental research into engineering applications, thus providing insights and guidance for developing a new generation of high-performance RHEAs.

Abstract:Refractory high entropy alloys have broad application prospects due to their excellent comprehensive properties in high temperature environments, and they have been widely implemented in many complex working conditions. According to the latest research reports, the preparation technology of bulk and coating refractory high entropy alloys are summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of each preparation technology are analyzed. In addition, the properties of refractory high entropy alloys, such as mechanical properties, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and radiation resistance are reviewed. The existing scientific problems of refractory high entropy alloys, at present, are put forward, which provide reference for the development and application of refractory high entropy alloys in the future, especially for plasma-facing materials in nuclear fusion reactors.

Abstract:Owing to superior comprehensive performance than conventional superalloys at high temperature, refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) is becoming a promising candidate for the next generation high-temperature material. Herein, contemporary aspects of corresponding development of RHEAs are reviewed to discuss various factors affecting the organization structure and service performance. It mainly covers alloying system and strengthening mechanism, the preparation method, plastic deformation and the related mechanism, as well as microstructure control by heat treatment. Firstly, the alloy systems and strengthening mechanism are introduced. This is followed by different preparation methods and the comparison of strengths and shortcomings based on different RHEAs. Then, hot deformation behavior and plastic deformation under different loadings are analyzed. Based on this, the influence of heat treatment on microstructures prior to and after the deformation is further summarized. Finally, some important research areas to be carried out in future are pointed out. This review will give a deep understanding of the effects of different factors on the service performance and provide scientific guide in designing RHEAs with improved performance.

Abstract:In order to deal with the sensitive damage failure of heavy equipment in severe service environment for a long time, it is urgent to develop new engineering materials with outstanding performance. High-entropy metallic glasses (denoted as HE-MGs) is a new type of structural and functional material that has attracted much attention from scholars in recent years. With the special composition design concept, it takes into account the structural advantages of traditional amorphous alloys and the excellent comprehensive performance of high-entropy alloys. Although HE-MGs has been barely 10 years old, its related research and exploration have made considerable headway. In view of the above-mentioned facts, the related concepts and evolution process were recapitulated. Herein, the factors affecting the phase stabilities of high entropy alloys and the rules of phase selection were summarized. In the meantime, the existing HE-MGs composition patterns and main characteristics and properties were concluded. The latest research progress on the room-temperature mechanical properties, serrated flow behavior, friction and wear properties as well as thermal stability were summarized. In the end, the research trend and application prospect of HE-MGs were put forward.

Abstract:Owing to their exceptional properties, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and high-entropy materials have emerged as promising research areas and shown diverse applications. Here, the recent advances in the field are comprehensively reviewed, organized into five sections. The first section introduces the background of HEAs, covering their definition, significance, application prospects, basic properties, design principles, and microstructure. The subsequent section focuses on cutting-edge high-entropy structural materials, highlighting developments such as nanostructured alloys, grain boundary engineering, eutectic systems, cryogenic alloys, thin films, micro-nano-lattice structures, additive manufacturing, high entropy metallic glasses, nano-precipitate strengthened alloys, composition modulation, alloy fibers, and refractory systems. In the following section, the emphasis shifts to functional materials, exploring HEAs as catalysts, magneto-caloric materials, corrosion-resistant alloys, radiation-resistant alloys, hydrogen storage systems, and materials for biomedicine. Additionally, the review encompasses functional high-entropy materials outside the realm of alloys, including thermoelectric, quantum dots, nanooxide catalysts, energy storage materials, negative thermal expansion ceramics, and high-entropy wave absorption materials. The paper concludes with an outlook, discussing future directions and potential growth areas in the field. Through this comprehensive review, researchers, engineers, and scientists may gain valuable insights into the recent progress and opportunities for further exploration in the exciting domains of high-entropy alloys and functional materials. Abstract:High entropy alloys are one of the most exciting developments conceived in the materials science field in the last years. These novel advanced engineering alloys exhibit a unique set of properties, which include, among others, good mechanical performance under severe conditions in a wide temperature range and high microstructural stability over long time periods. Owing to the remarkable properties of these alloys, they can become expedite solutions for multiple structural and functional applications. Nevertheless, like any other key engineering alloy, their capacity to be welded, and thus become a permanent feature of a component or structure, is a fundamental issue that needs to be addressed to further expand these alloys’ potential applications. In fact, welding of high entropy alloys has attracted some interest recently. Therefore, it is important to compile the available knowledge on the current state of the art on this topic in order to establish a starting point for the further development of these alloys. In this article, an effort is made to acquire a comprehensive knowledge on the overall progress on welding of different high entropy alloy systems through a systematic review of both fusion-based and solid-state welding techniques. From the current literature review, it can be perceived that welding of high entropy alloys is currently gaining more interest. Several high entropy alloy systems have already been successfully welded. However, most research works focus on the well-known CoCrFeMnNi. For this specific system, both fusion and solid-state welding have been used, with no significant degradation of the joints’ mechanical properties. Among the different welding techniques already employed, laser welding is predominant, potentially due to the small size of its heat source. Overall, welding of high entropy alloys is still in its infancy, though good perspectives are foreseen for the use of welded joints based on these materials in structural applications.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted a great deal of interest over the last 14 years. One reason for this level of interest is related to these alloys breaking the alloying principles that have been applied for many centuries. Thus, HEAs usually possess a single phase (contrary to expectations according to the composition of the alloy) and exhibit a high level of performance in different properties related to many developing areas in industry. Despite this significant interest, most HEAs have been developed via ingot metallurgy. More recently, powder metallurgy (PM) has appeared as an interesting alternative for further developing this family of alloys to possibly widen the field of nanostructures in HEAs and improve some capabilities of these alloys. In this paper, PM methods applied to HEAs are reviewed, and some possible ways to develop the use of powders as raw materials are introduced.

Abstract:This paper reviews a current trend and recent progress in research on phase stability, atomic structures, mechanical and functional properties of high-entropy alloys. The survey is carried out based partly on the special issue published in April, 2020, in Materials Transactions (Vol. 61, No. 4). Research on high-entropy alloys has spread worldwide since the year of 2004, as many of them exhibit attractive properties for structural and functional applications, which have never been achieved in conventional alloys. Significant progress has been made in recent years in our understanding of high-entropy alloys in terms of processing, characterization, modeling and simulation, and so on. Some of them are briefly described in this paper.

Abstract:There is increasing interest in both relating the mechanical behavior of high-entropy alloys to their microstructural evolution and in their development for various applications. A special two-day international workshop on the above topic was held in Guiyang, China, in December 2014. The workshop gathered scientists and engineers to exchange information on recent progress in high-entropy alloys, to discuss the scientific issues and challenges to foster international collaborations, and to identify future directions. In this paper, a summary of this workshop is presented, including aspects of definition/terminology, phase formation, microstructure and phase stability, strengthening mechanisms, and high-temperature properties. Future research directions are also outlined.

Abstract:Over the past few years, there has been a notable surge in research interest surrounding High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) owing to their exceptional properties. Unlike conventional alloys, HEAs consist of five or more principal elements, which offer endless possibilities for developing new alloy systems. HEAs exhibit a high concentration of mixing elements, resulting in high disorderliness of the atomic structure within the material, known as high entropy. This unique nature provides HEAs with desirable properties, including excellent mechanical and physical properties at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for high-temperature applications like cryogenic engines and gas turbines. Moreover, HEAs have shown remarkable corrosion resistance, positioning them as viable options for applications in demanding environments such as marine settings, oil and gas pipelines, and chemical processing plants. This comprehensive review paper analyses recent studies on various HEAs, including their microstructure, hardness, compressive strength, magnetic and electrical properties, corrosion resistance, wear behaviour, and different applications. The anticipated findings of this paper are a milestone for future investigations on the production and analysis of HEAs. The discoveries hold great value for researchers, designers, and manufacturers working in this field, as they offer valuable knowledge regarding the characteristics and possible uses of HEAs. Consequently, these findings lay the groundwork for further exploration in this promising field of materials science.

This review succinctly outlines the theoretical foundations of HEAs, including the entropy of the alloy and its thermodynamic stability, following a discussion of design principles and first-principles calculations that are crucial for alloy optimization, we provide a comprehensive review of various preparation techniques, such as mechanical alloying, magnetron sputtering, vacuum smelting, and additive manufacturing, emphasizing their influence on the properties of HEAs. The paper meticulously examines the core effects of these alloys—high entropy, lattice distortion, slow diffusion, and cocktail effects—which contribute to their unique attributes. Development of Oxidation Resistant Refractory High Entropy Alloys for High Temperature Applications: Recent Results and Development Strategy

Abstract:Refractory High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) can be considered as promising materials for high temperature applications because of their high melting point and outstanding high temperature strength. The microstructure of the equimolar alloy Nb-Mo-Cr-Ti-Al consists of a disordered body centered cubic (BCC) phase and a small amount of the Laves phase, while the equimolar alloy Ta-Mo-Cr-Ti-Al exhibits the ordered B2 and several Laves phases in addition to the BCC phase. The experimental studies reveal that these alloys possess a beneficial combination of high temperature strength and corrosion protectiveness. The compressive yield stress of the alloy Nb-Mo-Cr-Ti-Al and Ta-Mo-Cr-Ti-Al at 1200 °C is determined to 100 MPa and 200 MPa, respectively. The oxidation resistance of the alloy Ta-Mo-Cr-Ti-Al in the temperature range between 900 and 1100 °C is comparable to that of multi-phase Ni-based alloys. The main drawback of both alloys is their low ductility at room temperature. Strategies for the future alloy development are discussed.

Abstract:Refractory high-entropy alloys present attractive mechanical properties, i.e., high yield strength and fracture toughness, making them potential candidates for structural applications. Understandings of atomic and electronic interactions are important to reveal the origins for the formation of high-entropy alloys and their structure−dominated mechanical properties, thus enabling the development of a predictive approach for rapidly designing advanced materials. Here, we report the atomic and electronic basis for the valence−electron-concentration-categorized principles and the observed serration behavior in high-entropy alloys and high-entropy metallic glass, including MoNbTaW, MoNbVW, MoTaVW, HfNbTiZr, and Vitreloy-1 MG (Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5). We find that the yield strengths of high-entropy alloys and high-entropy metallic glass are a power-law function of the electron-work function, which is dominated by local atomic arrangements. Further, a reliance on the bonding-charge density provides a groundbreaking insight into the nature of loosely bonded spots in materials. The presence of strongly bonded clusters and weakly bonded glue atoms imply a serrated deformation of high-entropy alloys, resulting in intermittent avalanches of defects movement.

Abstract:Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) with excellent comprehensive mechanical properties at high temperature are a new research focus in the field of materials. In this paper, the compositional design theory and the simulation research based on first-principles of density functional theory (DFT) for RHEAs were introduced. The research status of compositional optimization, doping non-metallic elements and functional phases, and phase structure regulation for RHEAs were summarized. In addition, the process characteristics of smelting, powder metallurgy, magnetron sputtering and laser cladding were reviewed, and the feasibility and difficulties of preparing RHEAs by extreme high-speed laser cladding (EHLC) were analyzed. Finally, the following suggestions were put forward for the development direction of RHEAs: improving the theory and simulation study of RHEAs composition design, investigating the strengthening effect of doping non-metallic elements and functional phases in RHEAs, paying attention to the synergistic effect between different phase structures, optimizing the process of preparing RHEAs by laser cladding to realize direct forming of parts, and expanding the application of EHLC in preparation of RHEAs coatings.

High-entropy alloy: challenges and prospects

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are presently of great research interest in materials science and engineering. Unlike conventional alloys, which contain one and rarely two base elements, HEAs comprise multiple principal elements, with the possible number of HEA compositions extending considerably more than conventional alloys. With the advent of HEAs, fundamental issues that challenge the proposed theories, models, and methods for conventional alloys also emerge. Here, we provide a critical review of the recent studies aiming to address the fundamental issues related to phase formation in HEAs. In addition, novel properties of HEAs are also discussed, such as their excellent specific strength, superior mechanical performance at high temperatures, exceptional ductility and fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures, superparamagnetism, and superconductivity. Due to their considerable structural and functional potential as well as richness of design, HEAs are promising candidates for new applications, which warrants further studies.

Abstract:Breaking through the design concept of conventional high-temperature alloys, refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) exhibited increasingly alloy systems and excellent performance, which can be potentially used as turbine blades, nuclear materials, kinetic energy penetrators, catalysts for high-temperature service in space, nuclear reactor programs, electronic industries and military fields. Therefore, as novel promising candidates with great application potential beyond superalloys, RHEAs′ research not only has cutting-edge academic value, but also has immeasurable economic benefits and strategic significance. Due to the explosively exponential growth of RHEAs in the years from 2019 to 2022 and based on the review of these newly published literature, the current development has been categorized into composition space extension, fabrication routes, post processing methods, performances, modeling and simulation section, as well as promising future possibilities.

Abstract:The paper is a personal perspective on the design of metallic ultra-high temperature materials (UHTMs). Specifically, the alloy design “landscape” of metallic UHTMs was considered from the viewpoint of the alloy design methodology NICE. The concepts of synergy, entanglement and self-regulation and their significance for alloy design/development were discussed. The risks, ecological challenges and material-environment interactions associated with the development of metallic UHTMs were highlighted. The “landscape” showed that beneath the complexities of alloy design lies an elegant and powerful unity of specific parameters that link logically and that progress can be made by recognising those interrelationships between parameters that generate interesting, diverse, and complex alloys.
