Abstract:Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling within the newly discovered organic charge-transfer complexes. A systemic understanding of the origin of organic ferroelectricity and magnetism is provided. Furthermore, based on the recent mechanism of the magnetoelectric coupling effect: spin-ordering-induced electric polarization and ferroelectricity-induced spin alignment, we further present the recent progress in organic charge-transfer multiferroics and metal-organic framework multiferroics. The coexistence of polarization and magnetism at room temperature of organic charge-transfer complexes will be critical for the development of all-organic multiferroics.

Abstract:Multiferroics simultaneously possess two or more primary ferroic orders, such as magnetic, ferroelectric, ferroelastic and ferrotoroidic orders. Cross-coupling among these multi-ferroic orders would result in new properties, such as a magnetoelectric effect that enables controlling magnetism using an electric field or controlling polarization remotely using a magnetic field. Since their discovery in the 1960s, multiferroic materials have constantly attracted attention and, especially since the 2000s, research on multiferroics has grown apace. The observation of room-temperature multiferroicity in BiFeO3 thin films has driven significant research activity in single-phase multiferroics. The observation of the giant magnetoelectric effect (i.e. magnetic-field-induced large polarization change) in multiferroic composite materials has also aroused considerable interest. With advances in film-deposition techniques, multiferroic heterostructures have become a topical subject and there have been remarkable developments in the room-temperature electric-field control of magnetism of heterostructures, which has inspired the development of fascinating magnetoelectric-device concepts. In this Special Topic, several articles review the past and look into the future of multiferroic physics and materials.

Abstract:Multiferroics refers to a new class of multifunctional materials in which the magnetic and electric orders coexist in a single compound and nontrival magneto-electric coupling is in presence.There will be potential applications in practical industry and information device for those multifunctional materials in which there are also very rich fundamental physics implied.In this paper, we review the past progress and current trends in the studies on multiferroic materials.After a short introduction of the history of the multiferroics,we discuss in detail the classification of various multiferroics according to the mechanism that drives the ferroelectricity,where special attention is given to review the most recent advances in the experimental and theoretical aspects of spin-driven multiferroics.Then we systematically address a new type of elementary excitation, electromagnon,emerged in the multiferroics,and provide an overview of the key experimental phenomena and current theoretical understandings.Finally,we summarize the major scientific challenges and outline the perspective views of the field in the near future.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive review of the emerging nanoscale ferroelectric materials used in novel nanoelectronics devices. First, we outline specific physical and electronic properties of ferroelectric materials, then we focus on two main classes of ferroelectrics based on hafnium oxide (HfO2) and 2D materials. The former exhibits unique characteristics, making it the target of subsequent discussions. Their remanent polarization, coercive field, permittivity, nanometric scale thickness (up to 10 nm), and CMOS compatibility distinguish HfO2 compounds from any other existing ferroelectrics. The ever increasing need to integrate nanotechnology with electronics has given rise to the realization of newer conceptual devices and components based on ferroelectric HfO2, such as phase shifters, phased antenna arrays (PAAs), filters, field-effect transistors (FETs,) ferroelectric tunneling junctions (FTJs), memristors/memtransistors (neuromorphic nanoelectronics), and negative capacitance ferroelectric transistors. For each of these applications, we present state-of-the-art solutions that were designed, fabricated, and tested. At the same time, the main drawbacks (especially those related to materials and technological issues) are discussed. This article provides an in-depth overview of present and future challenges in the domain of ferroelectric-based nanoelectronics, with the hope that it will trigger the curiosity of researchers interested in the further advancement of this emerging field of science.

Abstract:Ferroelectric nanomaterials and nanostructures such as nanowires, nanotubes and nanorings, have received considerable attention due to their novel size-dependent properties and important applications in the miniaturization of ferroelectric-based electronic devices. In recent years advances have been made both in fabrication and (electrical and structural) characterization of ferroelectric nanomaterials and nanostructures, and also in modeling of the resulting properties. An overview of the state of art in ferroelectric nanomaterials and nanostructures is presented. First, we review the fabrication of high-quality ferroelectric nanomaterials and nanostructures by a variety of techniques. The second deals with nanoscale probing the ferroelectric properties of nanomaterials and nanostructures. The third summarizes the recently developed four theories particularly related to nanotubes,nanowires and nanodots, to deeply understand the novel phenomena such as toroidal ordering of polarization and the polarization vortices in ferroelectric nanostructures from the first-principles computational approach. Finally we describe the enormous progresses made in microstructural characterization of ferroelectric nanomaterials and nanostructures, and some fundamental physics questions regarding both toroidal ordering in ferroelectric nanostructures and attempts on experimental searching for such domain structures in FIB-milled ferroelectric nanostructures cut from single ferroelectric crystals, are also discussed.

Abstract:The primary focus of this special issue is on the physics of coupling between magnetic and electric subsystems in multiferroics, recent developments in materials synthesis, theory and experiments on magneto-electric phenomena and applications [1, 2]. Although both single phase [1, 2] and composites have been discussed in this special issue [5–10], particular focus is on ferromagnetic-ferroelectric composites due their strong magneto-electric (ME) interactions and their excellent potential for a variety of devices applications [11–19]. The published articles in the special issue covered advances in materials synthesis, investigations of ME phenomena, theory, and applications. Articles on single phase multiferroics include the report by Peng et al, on iron-based materials with ‘improper ferroelectricity’ that is attributed to a variety of causes including magnetism driven, geometric or charge ordering [3]. Strong ME coupling has been reported in Sr and Ni substituted Y-type hexagonal with conical spin ordering [4]. Articles on composite multiferroics in the special issue deal with advances in efforts to enhance the strength of ME interactions [5–7]. Although it is possible to achieve very strong ME coupling with excitation fields applied at resonance modes of composite structures, avenues for realizing strong coupling at low frequencies is addressed in the report by Ou-Yang et al [5]. Reports on strong low-frequency ME coupling in bilayers of several lead-based ferroelectrics and nickel ferrite [6], and in multilayers of barium titanate and Gd-substituted BiFeO3 are also noteworthy [7]. Most studies on ME effects in composites are restricted to excitations field amplitudes that are low enough so that nonlinear ME effects are not present. Fetisov et al reported on nonlinear ME effects under high amplitude ac magnetic fields [8]. Their findings will have implications in the use of composites for magnetic sensors and high frequency devices. Recent developments in the synthesis of layered nanocompsites [9] and results of modeling that predicts strong ME interactions in core–shell nanofibers of ferroelectrics and hexagonal ferrites [10] are significant contributions to this special issue. Articles on applications of magneto-electric materials include voltage/electric field control of magnetism [11, 12], ferroelectric domain switching in ME heterojunctions [13], sensor technologies [14, 15], memory devices [16], magnetocaloric effect based devices [17], and applications in energy harvesting, dual electric and magnetic field controlled high frequency devices, and novel gyrators capable of current-to-voltage conversion [1, 18, 19] are included. Ghidini et al report on control of magnetic state of Ni-microdots on barium titanate by both ferroelectric domain switching and piezoelectric deformation [11]. Artificial spin ice (ASI) systems are single domain structures arranged in lattice geometries that would behave like a collection of magnetic monopoles. Modeling on strain mediated voltage control of ASI is discussed in [12]. Magnetic sensors made of composites of Metglas and lanthanum niobate [14] and a sensor of DC magnetic field based on the converse ME effects in AlN-ferromagnetic alloys [15] are discussed. There are two review articles on the applications of ME composites [18, 19]. The contribution by Chu and coauthors is on the multilayered ME composites and their low frequency ME coupling for a variety of applications [18]. A comprehensive review of ME phenomena, materials, and applications is provided in the contrib ution by Leung et al, with particular emphasis on very recent efforts on ME gyrators, a new circuit element that are capable of direct conversion of current to a voltage. They detail the development of the gyrators from infancy to converters with power conversion efficiency of greater than 90%. We appreciate the authors for their contributions and are hopeful that the scientific and the engineering communities will benefit from the special issue. Abstract:Multiferroics represent a class of advanced materials for promising applications and stand at the forefront of modern science for the special feature possessing both charge polar and magnetic order. Previous studies indicate that the family of RECrO 3 (RE = rare earth) compounds is likely another rare candidate system holding both ferroelectricity and magnetism. However, many issues remain unsolved, casting hot disputes about whether RECrO 3 is multiferroic or not. For example, an incompatibility exists between reported structural models and observed ferroelectric behaviors, and it is not easy to determine the spin canting degree. To address these questions, one key step is to grow single crystals because they can provide more reliable information than other forms of matter do. In this review, the parent and doped ferroelectric YCrO 3 compounds are comprehensively reviewed based on scientific and patent literatures from 1954 to 2022. The materials syntheses with different methods, including poly-, nano-, and single-crystalline samples and thin films, are summarized. The structural, magnetic, ferroelectric and dielectric, optical, and chemical-pressure (on Y and Cr sites by doping) dependent chemical and physical properties and the corresponding phase diagrams, are discussed. Diverse (potential) applications, including anti-corrosion, magnetohydrodynamic electrode, catalyst, negative-temperature-coefficient thermistor, magnetic refrigeration, protective coating, and solid oxide fuel cell, are present. To conclude, we summarize general results, reached consensuses, and existing controversies of the past nearly 69 years of intensive studies and highlight future research opportunities and emerging challenges to address existing issues.

Abstract:Multiferroics exhibit intriguing physical properties and in turn promise new device applications — as a result of the coupling between their order parameters. In this review article, we introduce photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) as a powerful tool to study multiferroicity with the capability of probing the charge, spin and orbital states of a material simultaneously with nanoscale spatial resolution and element sensitivity. Several systematical studies of ferroelectricity, antiferromagnetism, and multiferroicity using PEEM are discussed. In the end, we outline several challenges remaining in multiferroic research, and how PEEM can be employed as an important characterization tool providing critical information to understand the emergent phenomena in multiferroics.

Abstract:Multiferroic magnetoelectric (ME) materials can not only consist of ferroelectric, magnetic or ferroelastic orders, but also novel effects produced by the coupling interaction between multi-order parameters. This kind of functional materials exhibit significant potential applications in the fields of novel multifunctional magnetic-electric devices, spintronics devices, and high performance information storage and processing, etc. Besides, multiferroic has become a hot topic due to its rich connotation in condensed matter physics concerning charge, spin, orbital, and lattice. In this paper, we review the history and the progress in the recent development of multiferroic compounds and composites, with the attention focused on the discussion of the key scientific challenges and the prospects of the future directions.

Abstract:Heterostructures, such as van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, provide a versatile platform for engineering the physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, spanning electronics, mechanics, optics, as well as electron-phonon couplings. Furthermore, vdW heterostructures, which are composed of metal/semiconductor or semiconductor/semiconductor combinations, not only maintain the unique properties of their individual constituents but also exhibit tunable physical and chemical properties that can be externally adjusted through strain, heat, and electric fields. These externally tunable properties offer significant advances in the fields of solid-state devices and renewable energy applications. Additionally, 2D material-based heterostructures, such as those composed of 0D clusters or quantum dots, as well as 1D nanotubes/wires in combination with 2D materials, also show immense potential for advancing next-generation nanodevices. The vast design space of vdW heterostructures enables their versatile applications spanning numerous fields, such as light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, photocatalysis, solar cells, photodetectors, and so on. In the Special Issue of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, entitled "Two-dimensional Materials-based Heterostructures for Next-generation Nanodevices", we have gathered a comprehensive collection of 14 articles, presenting the latest achievements in the fields of designing novel 2D materials and 2D heterostructures. Below, we have briefly condensed the essential research findings from these studies.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials, or materials that simultaneously possess two or more ferroic order parameters, have returned to the forefront of materials research. Driven by the desire to achieve new functionalities—such as electrical control of ferromagnetism at room temperature—researchers have undertaken a concerted effort to identify and understand the complexities of multiferroic materials. The ability to create high quality thin film multiferroics stands as one of the single most important landmarks in this flurry of research activity. In this review we discuss the basics of multiferroics including the important order parameters and magnetoelectric coupling in materials. We then discuss in detail the growth of single phase, horizontal multilayer, and vertical heterostructure multiferroics. The review ends with a look to the future and how multiferroics can be used to create new functionalities in materials.
