What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the thermoelectric performance of p - type PbSe materials by alloying CdTe. Specifically, the researchers hope to synergistically improve the electrical and thermal transport properties by enhancing the Seebeck coefficient and reducing the electronic thermal conductivity, and ultimately achieve a significant increase in the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT value). This can not only optimize the efficiency of p - type PbSe materials in thermoelectric conversion applications, but also provide new ideas and methods for the performance improvement of other thermoelectric systems. The key points mentioned in the paper include: - **Material selection**: p - type PbSe was selected as the base material and alloyed by adding different proportions of CdTe. - **Objective**: By changing the band structure and carrier scattering mechanism of the material, simultaneously increase the Seebeck coefficient and reduce the electronic thermal conductivity, in order to increase the ZT value. - **Experimental method**: The samples were prepared by melting and sintering methods, and the crystal structure and thermoelectric properties of the materials were characterized in detail by means of X - ray diffraction (XRD), conductivity measurement, Seebeck coefficient measurement, etc. - **Theoretical calculation**: The band structure and effective mass of the materials were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) to further explain the experimental results. Through these studies, the authors found that CdTe alloying can effectively increase the Seebeck coefficient of p - type PbSe and at the same time reduce the electronic thermal conductivity, so that the ZT value reaches about 1.5 at 860 K, which is 72% higher than that of undoped PbSe. This result provides an important reference for the development of high - efficiency thermoelectric materials.
