Abstract:The adsorption equilibria of nitrous oxide (N2O) on three commercial activated carbons were systematically investigated by means of a volumetric method at pressures up to 101 kPa and temperatures ranging from (195 to 323) K. The multiple-process adsorption equilibrium model appropriately describes the equilibrium data over the whole range of the applied conditions. The estimated total adsorption capacity of N2O is higher for activated carbon which possesses a higher pore volume determined by N-2 adsorption at 77 K. The thermodynamic properties such as the adsorption equilibrium constant and enthalpy associated with adsorption were derived to characterize interactions between adsorbate and adsorbent.

Abstract:An original activated carbon prepared from walnut peel, which was activated by zinc chloride, was modified with ammonium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide in order to contrast the adsorption property of the three different activated carbons. The experiment used a static adsorption test for p-nitrophenol. The effects of parameters such as initial concentration, contact time and pH value on amount adsorbed and removal are discussed in depth. The thermodynamic data of adsorption were analyzed by Freundlich and Langmuir models. The kinetic data of adsorption were measured by the pseudo-first-order kinetics and the pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The results indicated that the alkalized carbon samples derived from walnut peel had a better performance than the original activated carbon treated with zinc chloride. It was found that adsorption equilibrium time was 6 h. The maximum removal rate of activated carbon treated with zinc chloride for p-nitrophenol was 87.3% at pH 3,whereas the maximum removal rate of the two modified activated carbon materials was found to be 90.8% (alkalized with ammonium hydroxide) and 92.0% (alkalized with sodium hydroxide) at the same pH. The adsorption data of the zinc chloride activated carbon were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. The two alkalized activated carbon samples were fitted well to the Freundlich model. The pseudo-second-order dynamics equation provided better explanation of the adsorption dynamics data of the three activated carbons than the pseudo-first-order dynamics equation.

Abstract:The removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous solution is challenging to environmental technologists. Agricultural waste is apparently the most attractive materials in removing PAHs because of its abundance, renewability, and economic advantage. The adsorption of PAHs (e.g., naphthalene) onto walnut shell (WNS) and its fatty acid (e.g., capric acid, lauric acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid)-modified equivalent were investigated in this work to develop low-cost biosorbents for hydrophobic organic compounds. Compared with other modified sorbents, oleic acid graftted walnut shell (OWNS) showed the maximum partition coefficient (4330 ± 8.8 L kg(-1)) because of its lowest polarity and highest aromaticity. The adsorption capacity (7210 μg g(-1)) of OWNS at the temperature of 298 K was observed for an initial naphthalene concentration of 25 mg L(-1) with contact time of 40 h, sorbent dosage of 1 g L(-1), and in neutral condition. Furthermore, the regeneration capability of OWNS implied that it was a promising biosorbent for naphthalene removal.

Abstract:Competitive adsorption between nonpolar organic compounds and polar ionic organic compounds (IOCs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is essential for application of CNTs as superior sorbents and for environmental risk assessment of both CNTs and organic contaminants. It was observed in this study that adsorption of neutral and dissociated species of polar 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and 4-chloroaniline (PCAN) on a multiwalled CNT sample (MWCNT15) can be suppressed by nonpolar naphthalene. Naphthalene adsorption can also be suppressed by neutral DCP/PCAN, but not dissociated DCP/PCAN. Moreover, competition of naphthalene decreased the adsorption affinity of neutral DCP/PCAN, but not their adsorption capacity because of the formation of solute bilayer on MWCNT15. For dissociated DCP/PCAN, naphthalene not only decreased their adsorption affinity but also their adsorption capacity because no solute bilayer was formed. Neutral DCP/PCAN also decreased the adsorption affinity and adsorption capacity of naphthalene. These observations indicate that competitive adsorption of naphthalene with DCP/PCAN depends on the dissociation of DCP/PCAN, as interpreted by (i) the different sites on CNTs for adsorption of organic chemicals (i.e., naphthalene, and the neutral and dissociated species of DCP/PCAN), (ii) the interactions between organic chemicals, and (iii) the interactions of organic chemicals with CNT surface.

Abstract:Various materials have been developed to capture volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to mitigate air pollution. However, sorbent materials with excellent resistance to water are rare. Here, several Fe/N-doped activated carbons (ACs) have been prepared to capture VOCs in humid environments. The ACs were analyzed by various characterization techniques, such as BET, SEM, XPS, XRD, FTIR, and Raman. The results showed that Fe/N doping resulted in the specific surface area of the ACs increasing by 500 to 1000 m 2 g −1 , the average pore size increasing to approximately 2 nm, improved mesoporous structure, higher graphitization, lower hydrophilicity, and polarity. The VOCs adsorption performance of the ACs was evaluated by static and dynamic adsorption experiments. The uptake of toluene and ethyl acetate by ACs was enhanced to 224 mg g −1 and 135 mg g −1 , respectively. And ACs were able to maintain 70 to 80% VOCs adsorption capacity for VOCs at 80% relative humidity. Furthermore, the microscopic mechanisms were investigated by the grand canonical Monte Carlo method (GCMC). The highly graphitized structure and the N functional groups favored the VOC adsorption process and discouraged the adsorption of water vapor. This work affirmed the dominance of Fe/N-doped carbon, which will contribute to the evolution of water-resistant VOCs adsorbent materials.

Abstract:Typical organic pollutants from coal-combustion flue gas such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) need to be effectively controlled. This work synthesized a series of nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NHPCs) by one-step activation with various proportions of cellulose, (NH4)(2)C2O4 and KHCO3/NaHCO3. The NHPCs have a high specific surface area and pore volume up to 2816 m(2)/g and 1.413 cm(3)/g as well as a hierarchical porous structure with micro-meso-macropores distribution. The dynamic adsorption tests of toluene at 600 ppm showed that NHPCs have a high adsorption capacity up to 585 mg/g (NHPC(K)131), this was about 3 times more than that of AC (208 mg/g), and is a better absorbent compared to many other carbon adsorbents. The porous characteristics and toluene adsorption properties of NHPCs improved along with the fluctuation of the proportions of raw materials and active agents. The micropore size of the material is the main factor that affecting the toluene adsorption capacity. The analysis of toluene dynamic adsorption breakthrough curves revealed that NHPCs had great toluene adsorption kinetics with high adsorption rate constants and short mass transfer zone. The excellent toluene adsorption kinetics of NHPCs can be attributed to the hierarchical porous structure. The abundant 2-10 nm mesopores and macropores of NHPCs act as mass transfer channels for toluene molecules. The XPS analysis showed that the NHPCs have nitrogen doping up to 6.71% (NHPC(Na)161) and they effectively promote toluene adsorption. The nitrogen doping mechanism can be attributed to the reactions between cellulose pyrolysis substances and NH3 which decomposed from (NH4)(2)C2O4. Moreover, the pore forming reactivity of KHCO3 is better than that of NaHCO3 in the NHPCs activation process. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Modelling and Prediction of Toluene Adsorption Saturation Basing on Characteristic Values of Activated Carbons

Abstract:Herein, the association between the dynamic adsorption capacity of toluene and several important characteristic values on activated carbon (AC) samples was investigated by multidimensional linear regression. Among the characteristic values, the carbon tetrachloride (CTC) adsorption value has demonstrated relatively stronger correlation with the toluene adsorption capacity on AC samples with diverse sources and forms, particularly in exposure to high-concentration toluene. Notably, the relevance of the toluene adsorption capacity to the CTC value could also be extended to a series of other porous adsorbents, which proved the wide applicability of CTC value in characterizing the adsorption behaviors. Based on these results, a mathematical and visual model was then established to predict the toluene adsorption saturation under different conditions (inlet concentration, adsorption time, initial CTC value, etc.) on diverse AC samples, of which the accuracy has later been verified by experimental data. As such, a fast and accurate estimation of the adsorption behaviors over AC samples, and possibly other porous adsorbents, was realized.
Experimental Study and Thermodynamic Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Adsorption onto Activated Carbons Prepared from Biowaste Raw Materials

Abstract:Nutshells are regarded as cost-effective and abundant raw materials for producing activated carbons (ACs) for CO2 capture, storage, and utilization. The effects of carbonization temperature and thermochemical KOH activation conditions on the porous structure as a BET surface, micropore volume, micropore width, and pore size distribution of ACs prepared from walnut (WNS) and hazelnut (HNS) shells were investigated. As a result, one-step carbonization at 900/800 °C and thermochemical KOH activation with a char/KOH mass ratio of 1:2/1:3 were found to be optimal for preparing ACs from WNS/HNS: WNS-AC-3 and HNS-AC-2, respectively. The textural properties of the WNS/HNS chars and ACs were characterized by low-temperature nitrogen vapor adsorption, XRD, and SEM methods. Dubinin’s theory of volume filling of micropores was used to evaluate the microporosity parameters and to calculate the CO2 adsorption equilibrium over the sub- and supercritical temperatures from 216.4 to 393 K at a pressure up to 10 MPa. The CO2 capture capacities of WNS- and HNS-derived adsorbents reached 5.9/4.1 and 5.4/3.9 mmol/g at 273/293 K under 0.1 MPa pressure, respectively. A discrepancy between the total and delivery volumetric adsorption capacities of the adsorbents was attributed to the strong binding of CO2 molecules with the adsorption sites, which were mainly narrow micropores with a high adsorption potential. The high initial differential heats of CO2 adsorption onto ACs of ~32 kJ/mol confirmed this proposal. The behaviors of thermodynamic functions (enthalpy and entropy) of the adsorption systems were attributed to changes in the state of adsorbed CO2 molecules determined by a balance between attractive and repulsive CO2–CO2 and CO2–AC interactions during the adsorption process. Thus, the chosen route for preparing ACs from the nutshells made it possible to prepare efficient carbon adsorbents with a relatively high CO2 adsorption performance due to a substantial volume of micropores with a size in the range of 0.6–0.7 nm.

Abstract:A high-surface-area carbon (KC-1) was prepared from waste polystyrene-based ion exchange resin by KOH activation and used for naphthalene adsorption. The carbon exhibited a good hydrophobic nature with developed porous structure, favoring the adsorption of organic compounds. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and total pore volume of KC-1 were 3442.2 and 1.68 cm3/g, respectively, which can be compared with those of KOH-activated carbons prepared from other precursors. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption of naphthalene onto KC-1. The equilibrium data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Polanyi-Manes isotherms and agreed with the Polanyi-Manes Model. The adsorption of naphthalene depended greatly on the porosity of the carbon, and the dispersive interactions between naphthalene and carbon could be relatively weak. The pH variation in aqueous solution had little effect on the adsorption process. The equilibrium time for 0.04 g/L of carbon dose was around 5 hr. Different models were used to evaluate the kinetic data and the pseudo second-order model was suitable to describe the kinetic process of naphthalene adsorption onto KC-1. Regeneration of spent carbon could be carried out effectively by alcohol treatment. The results indicated that KC-1 was a promising adsorbent for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The control of low-concentration VOCs in coal-fired flue gas is one of the research hotspots at present. In this work, K2CO3 and K2CO3-KCl were employed to activate the agricultural wastes (pistachio nut shell) to prepare activated carbon (AC), named PSAC-1 and PSAC-2, respectively. By testing the adsorption performance of the prepared AC and commercial activated carbon (CAC) for the five target VOCs, it was observed that the adsorption capacity of PSAC-2 was the best compared to the other two. Particularly, the adsorption capacity of PSAC-2 (225 mg·g-1) for phenol was 3.8 times that of CAC (59 mg·g-1). In addition, the pseudo-first-order model, pseudo-second-order model, and Elovich model all fitted the adsorption process well, which indicated that both physical adsorption and chemical adsorption existed simultaneously, in which physical adsorption played a dominant role and chemical adsorption played a minor role. Weber-Morris kinetic model was used to illustrate the rate-controlling mechanism; the results confirmed that the stage of external membrane mass transfer was the control stage of adsorption rate. The results of this study can provide some references for the commercial production of biomass-derived AC and the removal of VOCs in coal-fired flue gas.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In this study, activated carbon (AC) was prepared from municipal sludge with peanut shell as the carbon additive and the ferric chloride as activator. Then the properties of AC activated by ferric chloride (FAC) and non-activated (NAC) were analyzed. Main results show that FAC has extremely higher BET surface area (781.5 m(2)/g) and pore volume (0.859 m(3)/g) than NAC, which implies that ferric chloride can effectively promote the formation of developed pore structures of AC. Moreover, the obtained ACs were used as adsorbent to remove phenol in aqueous solution. Results indicate that FAC and NAC have a higher adsorption capacity in the range pH of 7-9 and 1 g/L is the most suitable dosage of AC, considering of the removal rate and adsorption capacity. The adsorption kinetic data and adsorption isotherm data are well described by the pseudo-second order model and Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity is 109.58 mg/g (1 g/L, pH 8.0, 298K). In summary, it is an effective method to prepare AC from sludge and a small amount of peanut shell by using ferric chloride as activator and to remove phenol. This provides a potential option for sludge resource recovery.
Effect of Pore Structure on CO2 Adsorption Performance for ZnCl2/FeCl3/H2O(g) Co-Activated Walnut Shell-Based Biochar

Abstract:Walnut shell is a very potential biochar precursor because of its wide source, low cost, and easy structure modification. In this paper, the co-activation method of FeCl3, ZnCl2 and H2O(g) was adopted to prepare walnut shell-based biochar with high microporosity and the effect of pore structure on CO2 adsorption performance at different temperatures was investigated. The prepared biochar had a larger specific surface area (2647.8 m2 g−1), satisfactory micropore area (2008.7 m2 g−1) and high total pore volume (2.58 cm3 g−1). At 273 K and 298 K, its CO2 adsorption capacity was 4.79 mmol g−1 and 3.20 mmol g−1, respectively. Particularly, CO2 adsorbed uptake on biochar was strongly sensitive to their narrow micropore volume, instead of the total specific surface area, total pore volume, and micropore specific surface area. The optimal pore size beneficial for CO2 adsorption was 0.33–0.82 nm at 273 K, but the optimal pore size was 0.33–0.39 nm at 298 K. It provides theoretical guidance for future material preparation and selection, and FeCl3, ZnCl2 and H2O(g) may be effective biochar activators.

Abstract:In this work, biomass wastes (chestnut shells, walnut shells and macadamia nut shells) were used as raw materials, and a series of activated carbons (ACs) with high micropore percentage were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization and chemical activation methods, and their dynamic CO2 adsorption capacity was systematically studied. Then the effect of activation conditions and adsorption conditions were all investigated, and the hydrothermal conditions were evaluated in detail. In particular, the relationship between the CO2 uptake and textural properties such as micropore percentage and pore structure was discussed. The results show that the desired AC derived from walnut shells show superior CO2 uptake up to 2.24 mmol g−1 under the dynamic condition, which is comparable with the literature reported. It is also found that the micropore percentage has an important influence on the application of AC for CO2 capture. Both carbonization and activation conditions have significant impact on the CO2 uptake of AC. In addition, to control the CO2 inlet flow rate is essential to obtain a better adsorption effect. This work will give an effective guide to the fabrication of biomass derived AC, particular in preparation of AC based CO2 adsorbents.

Abstract:In order to treat dyes in the wastewater of the printing industry and to reutilize walnut shell (WS) waste generate economic benefits, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ) pretreatment technology was developed to prepare porous biochar as a precursor for adsorption material. Orthogonal experiments were conducted at the temperatures of 200, 300, and 400 ℃ with durations of 20, 40, and 60 min, and a control group was set up using N 2 pretreatment. Then, KOH activation was employed to prepare biochar adsorption material. The biochars were analyzed and characterized using TGA, BET, SEM, FT-IR, and XRD, and the liquid and gas phase products of the pretreatment process were analyzed semi-quantitatively and quantitatively using GC–MS and gas chromatography. Methylene blue (MB) dye was selected as an indicator to measure the adsorption capacity of biochar, and adsorption kinetics were analyzed based on the data. The results indicate that pretreatment with SC-CO 2 effectively enhanced the performance and yield of the activated carbon. The highest specific surface area increased by 18%, and the maximum adsorption of MB increased by 23% compared to the N 2 control group. The yield increased by 8–262% and the specific surface area increased by 50–192% compared to the direct activation of walnut shell (WS). During the pretreatment processes for the preparation of biochar adsorption material with the best specific surface area, phenol-enriched bio-oil was produced as a by-product which has economic value. Abstract:We prepared activated carbon with high specific surface area from walnut shells by chemical activation with KOH and microwave heating. To optimize the preparation process, we applied the response surface methodology technique. We then investigated the influences of microwave power, activation time, and KOH/C weight ratio on the yield and iodine adsorption capacity of the activated carbon. The results revealed that the optimum conditions were: microwave power 700 W, activation time 20 min, and KOH/C weight ratio 4, corresponding to a yield of 40 % and an iodine number of 2558 mg/g. The pore structure parameters of the activated carbon, i.e., Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, total pore volume, and average pore diameter, were estimated to be 3923 m2/g, 2.778 ml/g, and 2.32 nm, respectively, under optimum conditions. The activated carbon and char were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. FTIR showed that the chemical groups of the activated carbon had changed, and SEM revealed that the activated carbon had lots of small, irregular pores on its surface. The inner structure of the activated carbon under the optimum preparation conditions is viewed by the TEM.

Abstract:A hierarchical micro-nano porous carbon material (MNC) was prepared using expanded graphite (EG), sucrose, and phosphoric acid as raw materials, followed by sucrose-phosphoric acid solution impregnation, solidification, carbonization and activation. Nitrogen adsorption and mercury porosimetry show that mixed nanopores and micropores coexist in MNC with a high specific surface area of 1978 m2·g−1 and a total pore volume of 0.99 cm3·g−1. In addition, the MNC is found to consist of EG and activated carbon with the latter deposited on the interior and the exterior surfaces of the EG pores. The thickness of the activated carbon layer is calculated to be about one hundred nanometers and is further confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission election microscope (TEM). A maximum static phenol adsorption of 241.2 mg·g−1 was obtained by using MNC, slightly higher than that of 220.4 mg·g−1 by using commercial activated carbon (CAC). The phenol adsorption kinetics were investigated and the data fitted well to a pseudo-second-order model. Also, an intra-particle diffusion mechanism was proposed. Furthermore, it is found that the dynamic adsorption capacity of MNC is nearly three times that of CAC. The results suggest that the MNC is a more efficient adsorbent than CAC for the removal of phenol from aqueous solution.
Selective Adsorption of Naphthalene in Aqueous Solution on Mesoporous Carbon Functionalized by Task-Specific Ionic Liquid

Abstract:As a large group of persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) commonly coexist with chlorinated organic compounds in industrial wastewater. Preferential adsorption of PAHs from wastewater and final effluent is essential in pretreatment processes. In this study, a novel nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) with high surface area (2130 m(2)/g) and bimodal pore size distribution (similar to 2 and similar to 9.4 nm) was synthesized via a solvent evaporation induced self-assembly process using task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) as the nitrogen source. The selective adsorption of naphthalene (NAP) with pentachlorophenol (PCP) on NMC in aqueous solution was investigated compared with conventional ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC). Kinetic studies revealed that the NAP adsorption process achieved equilibrium within 5 min and followed a pseudo-second-order rate equation. The adsorption capacity of NMC for NAP was 3.2 mmol/g, which was about 13 times that for PCP at pH 10 in a bi-solute system. The equilibrium adsorption of NAP onto NMC in single- and bi-solute system could be well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. The higher adsorption capacity and selectivity of NMC for NAP compared with OMC was ascribed to its unique bimodal pore system and pi-pi dispersive interactions. Our research also provided a new methodology for the synthesis of N-doped mesoporous carbon materials based on TSILs.
Adsorption and desorption of gaseous naphthalene on carbonaceous sorbents: Insights into advantageous pore sizes and morphologies

Abstract:<p>Capturing and recovering naphthalene as a profitable chemical from hot flue gas are of significance in terms of environmental protection with economic benefits, for which the adsorption technology using high-performance sorbents provides the key step for success in practical applications. Carbonaceous materials with hydrophobic natures have been shown to render high affinities with non-polar naphthalene, but remain challenging due to difficulties in tackling the trade-off between adsorption and desorption. This work reports a systematic investigation with deeper insights into adsorption equilibria, kinetics and regenerabilities of gaseous naphthalene on typical carbonaceous sorbents originated from different texture properties, including ordered mesoporous carbons (CMK-3, CMK-5 and FDU-15), carbon nanotubes (SWCNT and MWCNT) and a coconut-shell-based activated carbon (AC). The adsorption isotherm and breakthrough curves at wide feed concentration ranges and temperature programmed desorption curves for each sorbent were obtained along with series of theoretical model fitting. FDU-15 and CMK-5 were demonstrated as superior sorbents with high maximum adsorption capacities (1.13 and 1.735 mmol/g) and low desorption activation energy (62.66 and 72.68 kJ/mol), respectively exhibiting advantages of the 3-dimensional diffusion-controlled desorption upon a hexagonal pore arrangement and the efficient adsorption upon a reasonable mesopore-micropore hierarchical structure, in contrast to poor kinetics on pure microporosity (AC) and 1-dimensional topologies (CNTs). Deeper insights into the morphology-affinity relationship revealed advantageous naphthalene transport behaviors over 3-dimensional ordered mesoporosities with appropriate coexisting microporosities and narrower primary size (2–5 nm) or diverse forms of mesopore, which contribute toward reaching comprehensive balances of sorption performances.</p>
