Abstract:For long-term and safe operation of the reactor, nuclear fuel is modified by doping with various homogeneous compounds and heterogeneous inclusions. Such modified fuel has demonstrated satisfactory performance when irradiated at elevated temperatures and high burnup. However, the issues of radiation safety when handling modified fuel remain less studied. Elements of low and medium atomic mass are often targets for (α, n) reactions, so their use as alloying additives, as well as the use of α-emitting additives, can complicate the radiation situation at the stages of the nuclear fuel cycle. In this work, the neutron components of the radiation characteristics of UO 2 with Gd 2 O 3 and AmO 2 additives were analyzed. Americium has been investigated as a possible alternative to gadolinium. In fuel containing AmO 2 , the neutron yield is higher compared to Am-free fuel and is formed mainly by (α, n) reactions in AmO 2 in fresh fuel and spontaneous fission of 244 Cm nuclides in spent fuel. The research was carried out with the aim of developing procedures and regulations for handling new fuel during its manufacture and after irradiation in the reactor. This work contributes to the study of the neutronic and radiation characteristics of Am-containing fuel, which has the potential for use in modern reactors. Calculations were performed using verified computational codes SOURCES-4C and WIMS-D5B.

Abstract:This article describes the preparation of 99 Mo isotope using the direct nuclear reaction 98 Mo(n,γ) 99 Mo by neutrons of the WWR-K reactor using molybdenum (VI) oxide of natural and enriched composition, according to the isotope 98 Mo (98.66%) as a target. The possibility of using enriched 98 Mo oxide to produce 99 Mo was considered. The estimation of the maximum specific activity of 99 Mo was obtained in a comparative manner under the same irradiation conditions at the reactor.

Abstract:Protactinium-231 has an attractive potential to reduce the initial excess-reactivity and to be effectively converted to the fissile nuclide 233U through 232U. Thus 231Pa serves as the burnable fertile material helping to achieve a long-life core. However the natural abundance of 231Pa is negligible. Therefore the production of 231Pa has been studied in a fusion blanket with a ThO2 zone which is irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons to cause the (n 2n) reaction in 232Th at a neutron wall load of 1MW/m2. The mass balance of 231Pa shows that the one fusion reactor with approximately 1.1 GWth and 1951t of ThO2 supports the one pebble bed-type gas cooled reactor with approximately 1 GWth and 10-year lifetime (700 GWD/t). It is also shown that the attractive fertile nuclide 231Pa is produced with a fissile nuclide 233U and a small fraction of 232U which enhances the proliferation resistance for the fissile product 233U due to the generation of high decay heat and strong gamma rays. In the present study the isotopic fraction of 232U is increased to over 2.4% by controlling the neutron spectrum in the ThO2 zone. As a result the fissile nuclide 233U could be always protected by 232U throughout the thorium fuel cycle based on 231 Pa.

Analysis of lutetium-177 production at the WWR-K research reactor

Abstract:Production of lutetium-177 using direct nuclear reaction 176Lu(n,γ)177Lu by WWR-K reactor neutrons on enriched LuCl3 (up to 82% of 176Lu) is described. Calculations were performed by MCNP6 transport code. Two different irradiation positions of the WWR-K research reactor were considered. Estimates of the maximum specific activity of the luthetium-177 are obtained for the reactor irradiation positions located: (a) in the reactor core centre, (b) in the core periphery. In these positions, thermal neutron flux is two times different. Experimental data was shown that k-factor is 1.5 for considered irradiation positions. The study shows that for the position located in the core center, the estimated maximum specific activity of lutetium-177 is 819 GBq/mg, is to be achieved after 15 days of irradiation. For the position located in the core periphery, specific activity of lutetium-177 is 561 GBq/mg, is to be achieved after 20 days of irradiation. Ratio of Lu-177m to Lu-177 specific activity is not more than 0.025 for both irradiation positions.

Abstract:The central problems of using ceramic nuclear fuel fabricated from uranium dioxide enriched in uranium-235 are low thermal conductivity, high disposal costs, and limited natural reserves of uranium-235. A potential direction for the further development of nuclear power in Russia is the use of mixed uranium-plutonium dispersion fuel consisting of fissile materials (uranium and plutonium dioxides) uniformly distributed in a matrix of metal oxides, which have a high thermal conductivity and a low neutron absorption cross section. The methods used to obtain complex oxide compositions (sol-gel, separate preparation, mechanical mixing, and others) are multi-stage, do not provide a uniform distribution of phases, and are characterized by high energy and labor costs. This article proposes a plasma-chemical method of synthesizing nanosized complex oxide compositions in an air-plasma flow from dispersed water-organic nitrate solutions, which provides a significant reduction in energy consumption, a uniform distribution of phases, and the required phase composition.

Abstract:Abstract The paper aims at studying specific peculiarities in isotope composition of thorium blanket under irradiation by fusion neutron source (FNS) in hybrid thermonuclear reactor (HTR). High-energy (14 MeV) component of neutron spectrum in thorium HTR blanket results in production of non-traditional fissile mixture including not only 233 U, but also 231 Pa 232 U and 234 U. Extraction of such non-traditional fuel from spent Th-blanket and its utilization in traditional nuclear power reactors could increase fuel burn-up and strengthen regime of nuclear non-proliferation. The detailed investigations of these positive effects require high-precision neutron-physical analyses of thorium HTR blanket. The results obtained in these investigations are presented in the paper. The following results were obtained: the chosen model of HTR allowed us to form high-energy neutron spectrum in Th-blanket with significant fraction of 14 MeV neutrons; it was evaluated that threshold (n,2n) and (n,3n)-reactions are able to produce significant amounts of non-traditional target isotopes 231 Pa and 232 U; it was shown that accumulation of non-traditional target isotopes weakened substantially in depth of Th-blanket. So, it seems reasonable to seek for optimal thickness of Th-blanket and, thus, to find optimal loading of natural thorium.
Study of Minor Actinides Transmutation in PWR MOX fuel

Abstract:The management of long-lived radionuclides in spent fuel is a key issue to achieve the closed nuclear fuel cycle and the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Partitioning-Transmutation is supposed to be an efficient method to treat the long-lived radionuclides in spent fuel. Some Minor Actinides (MAs) have very long half-lives among the radionuclides in the spent fuel. Accordingly, the study of MAs transmutation is a significant work for the post-processing of spent fuel. In the present work, the transmutations in Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) mixed oxide (MOX) fuel are investigated through the Monte Carlo based code RMC. Two kinds of MAs, $^{237}$Np and five MAs ($^{237}$Np, $^{241}$Am, $^{243}$Am, $^{244}$Cm and $^{245}$Cm) are incorporated homogeneously into the MOX fuel assembly. The transmutation of MAs is simulated with different initial MOX concentrations. The results indicate an overall nice efficiency of transmutation in both initial MOX concentrations, especially for the two kinds of MAs primarily generated in the UOX fuel, $^{237}$Np and $^{241}$Am. In addition, the inclusion of $^{237}$Np in MOX has no large influence for other MAs, while the transmutation efficiency of $^{237}$Np is excellent. The transmutation of MAs in MOX fuel depletion is expected to be a new, efficient nuclear spent fuel management method for the future nuclear power generation.

Abstract:The results have been presented of radiochemical analysis of 8 samples of nuclear fuel irradiated in a VVER-440 reactor. The procedures have been described for the radiochemical separation and analysis of nuclides of uranium, plutonium, americium, curium, neodymium, cesium, cerium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, neptunium using radiochemical and instrumental techniques, including ion exchange chromatography, alpha, gamma, and mass spectrometry. The data on isotopic composition, mass content of nuclides, and fuel burnup, calculated by the method of heavy atoms and by accumulation of burnup monitors 145+146 Nd, 148 Nd, have been reported.
Neutronic examination of the U–Mo accident tolerant fuel for VVER-1200 reactors

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the possibility of employing accident tolerant fuel (ATF) in VVER-1200/V491 assembly without gadolinium-containing fuel rods using the Monte Carlo code Serpent 1.1.7 with ENDF/B-VII cross-section library. The analysis involves assembly design with reflective boundary conditions. To compare the neutronic performances, U–5Mo, U-7.5Mo, U–10Mo, and U–15Mo fuels were chosen in addition to ordinary UO 2 fuel. The concentration of 135 Xe, 149 Sm, fissile and fertile isotopes with burnup, reactivity feedback with fuel temperature variation, and β eff values were calculated. The results indicate that the fuel cycle length increases by 54.27% for U–5Mo, 32.6% for U-7.5Mo, and 13.8% for U–10Mo, while it decreases by 16.4% for U–15Mo fuel. Additionally, the effect of 95 Mo content in natural Mo was investigated by reducing the 95 Mo concentration. According to the results, each proposed fuel's fuel cycle length extended when the depletion ratio of 95 Mo increased. Additionally, the calculations for reactivity feedback guarantee safe operating conditions for all U-xMo fuels.

Abstract:Effectively implementing safeguards in fuel reprocessing and fuel fabrication plants requires the extensive use of state-of-the-art instrumentation for accurate material characterization. The ability to rapidly and continuously determine the material balance in a large facility is essential to control and reduce the risk of diversion. Multiple detection technologies are implemented that provide the necessary Continuity of Knowledge (CoK) and inventory control required for effective safeguards. In a Pu/U-oxide (MOX) fuel processing facility, much of the detection technology is based on moderated 3He neutron detectors. Recent concerns with respect to the possible lack of sufficient quantities of 3He has resulted in the interest in developing alternative detection technologies for current and future needs and applications. To address this situation, we have begun a series of experiments at a MOX fuel fabrication facility to determine the performance and suitability of liquid scintillator neutron detectors. MOX fuel in the form of reactor fuel assembly fuel rods and large volume MOX powder containers typically found in such production facilities were measured. In addition, high-purity Germanium (HPGe) and cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors will be included to determine their respective performance characteristics in a large and complex fuel production environment. The results of these experiments will be used for consideration in the development and deployment of new safeguards systems in large, complex facilities such as the Japan Mixed-Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (J-MOX) or the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant (RRP). This paper will present and discuss the results of the first series of experiments, conducted at PPFF (Plutonium Fuel Development Center Plutonium Fuel Facility) of JAEA, as well as describe the next steps in this process.

Abstract:Principle and test experience of the Oxide Pyro-Process being developed at Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (RIAR, Russia) to process Fast Breeder Reactors spent MOX fuels were reviewed. Attention was paid to the thermodynamics and kinetics of fundamental chemical reactions and to the electrochemical properties of elements included in spent MOX fuel in the molten salts. Published data of actinides, fission products, and components of cladding or other structural materials were evaluated by means of comparison and analysis.

Abstract:The design of fast reactors burning MOX fuels requires accurate capture and fission cross sections. For the particular case of neutron capture on 242Pu, the NEA recommends that an accuracy of 8-12% should be achieved in the fast energy region (2 keV-500 keV) compared to their estimation of 35% for the current uncertainty. Integral irradiation experiments suggest that the evaluated cross section of the JEFF-3.1 library overestimates the 242Pu(n,{\gamma}) cross section by 14% in the range between 1 keV and 1 MeV. In addition, the last measurement at LANSCE reported a systematic reduction of 20-30% in the 1-40 keV range relative to the evaluated libraries and previous data sets. In the present work this cross section has been determined up to 600 keV in order to solve the mentioned discrepancies. A 242Pu target of 95(4) mg enriched to 99.959% was irradiated at the n TOF-EAR1 facility at CERN. The capture cross section of 242Pu has been obtained between 1 and 600 keV with a systematic uncertainty (dominated by background subtraction) between 8 and 12%, reducing the current uncertainties of 35% and achieving the accuracy requested by the NEA in a large energy range. The shape of the cross section has been analyzed in terms of average resonance parameters using the FITACS code as implemented in SAMMY, yielding results compatible with our recent analysis of the resolved resonance <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://region.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> results are in good agreement with the data of Wisshak and Käppeler and on average 10-14% below JEFF-3.2 from 1 to 250 keV, which helps to achieve consistency between integral experiments and cross section data. At higher energies our results show a reasonable agreement within uncertainties with both ENDF/B-VII.1 and JEFF-3.2. Our results indicate that the last experiment from DANCE underestimates the capture cross section of 242Pu by as much as 40% above a few keV.

Evaluation of neutronic parameters for RITM-200 reactor unit considering (238U+235U)O2, (232Th+235U)O2 and (232Th+233U)O2 dispersed fuel using MCU-PTR

Abstract:Simulation tools have become an integral tool in the analysis of neutronic parameters of reactor units. These simulation tools are built to solve the neutron transport equation. In this article, the MCU-PTR simulation tool is used in the evaluation of the possibility of achieving extra-long fuel lifetime in the RITM-200 reactor unit with consideration to the fuel composition. The three dispersed fuel compositions (238U+235U)O2, (232Th+235U)O2 and (232Th+233U)O2 are simulated at varying fuel element diameter of 4.9 mm to 8.9 mm with 1 mm interval. From the simulation, the dependence of reactivity margin on the fuel burnup of the three dispersed fuels were established. The dependence of the effective multiplication factor (keff) on the reactor operation time for the three dispersed fuel composition were also determined. From the results, it can be deduced that transition of the fuel from (238U + 235U)O2 to (232Th + 235U)O2 results in a 12% increase in the fuel burnup and no change in fuel campaign. While the transition from (238U + 235U)O2 to (232Th + 233U)O2 leads to a 32.4% increase in the fuel campaign and 45.6% increase in the fuel burnup. It has also been shown that the optimal fuel element diameter is 7.9 mm for (232Th + 233U)O2 dispersed fuel. At this diameter, it is possible to increase the duration of the fuel campaign by 85.3% and achieve a fuel burnup of 51.9% in comparison to the design fuel diameter of 6.9 mm for (238U + 235U)O2 dispersed fuel.

Abstract:A series of simulated experiments were conducted at the fast critical assembly (FCA) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to simulate a light water reactor core with a tight lattice cell containing highly enriched mixed-oxide fuel with a fissile plutonium (Pu) ratio >15%. The prediction accuracy of the neutron computation codes and nuclear data libraries in a wide range of neutron spectra was evaluated by constructing three experimental configurations of the FCA-XXII-1 assembly with different void fractions (45%, 65%, and 95%) of the moderator material (foamed polystyrene). The hydrogen-to–nuclear fuel atomic ratio was systematically varied from 0.1 to 0.8. In a previous paper, we reported the criticality and reactivity worths measured in these experiments. This technical note provides the experimental results for the central reaction rate ratios and fission distributions as follows. The fission rate ratios of uranium (U) ( 238 U) and 239 Pu relative to 235 U were measured at the core centers using three calibrated fission chambers, and the 238 U capture reaction rate ratio relative to 235 U fission was measured using depleted U foils. The reaction rate distributions were also obtained by traversing four micro fission chambers of highly enriched U, natural U, Pu, and neptunium through each core region in the radial and axial directions. The experimental analyses were performed using detailed models of the Monte Carlo code MVP3 with the Japanese evaluated nuclear data library of JENDL-4.0. Most calculation results agreed well with the experiments, whereas those for the fission rate ratio of 239 Pu to 235 U were underestimated by up to 6% with the softening neutron spectrum.

Abstract:Abstract Neutronic and burnup assessment of an LWR based SMR core with Transuranic Fuel (TRU) was carried out and compared with UO2 fuel and mixed oxide fuel (MOX) for different core composition and configurations. Eight different cores were modeled by changing the fuel composition and loading pattern of four different fuel assemblies namely UO2, MOX, TRU, and annular UO2 fuel and simulated in open-source Monte-Carlo code OpenMC. The radial neutron flux distribution and maximum to average flux ratio were studied. The lowest flux ratio was found in Annular-2 models whereas TRU models showed the highest value. The effect of enrichment, fuel burnup, moderator to fuel ratio, and soluble boron concentration on effective multiplication factor (k_eff) was investigated. Burnup analysis of fissionable materials and neutron poison was performed. Burnup dependent fission rate of U-235, Pu-239, and Pu-241 was also studied. The composition of spent fuel at EOC was investigated and lower minor actinides (MAs) production was observed for TRU models. This analysis would help to determine the effectiveness and feasibility of these potential core configurations and to predict their neutronic behavior.
Computational Optimization of 133mXe Production in the Washington State University TRIGA Reactor

Abstract:Here we present a new method of irradiating 132 Xe capsules with neutrons to produce 133m Xe gas standards that are used for radiation detector calibration at radioxenon measurement laboratories in support of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). This method is designed to maximize the production of 133m Xe compared to 133 Xe, both of which are competing products from the 132 Xe(n, g) reaction. The 133m Xe is produced at a much higher fraction for high-energy neutron absorptions in 132 Xe (~50% for fast neutrons versus ~11% for thermal neutrons). We performed "spectral tuning" of the Washington State University (WSU) TRIGA reactor neutron spectrum inside the 132 Xe ampules to maximize the number of fast neutrons and minimize the number of thermal neutrons available for 132 Xe absorption. Spectral tuning analysis, done with Monte Carlo simulations, provided valuable insights into a future final design for a 132 Xe irradiation capsule. With no spectral tuning, the fractional yield of 133m Xe in the WSU reactor was ~11.7%. By surrounding the 132 Xe capsule with a 0.5-cm-thick layer of tungsten and a 2.83-cm layer of europium (III) oxide and placing it in the reactor's cadmium rotator tube next to the fuel elements, the fractional yield of 133m Xe can be increased to 24.6%, a 111% increase in yield. Thus, by improving the fractional yield of 133m Xe through spectral tuning, the CTBT will have better quality gas standards to use for radioxenon detector calibration to assist in the CTBT's mission.

Abstract:Pretransient characterization was performed for the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel pellets from the SPA-2/-2B Operational Reliability Testing collaboration between Japan and the United States. Continued collaboration under the Advanced Reactor Experiments for Sodium Fast Reactor Fuels project will investigate the transient performance of these rods in the Transient Reactor Test facility at Idaho National Laboratory in the MOXTOP-THOR experiment. The results will fill a gap in existing transient performance data for MOX as these rods have a peak burnup of 14.3 at. % (~134.4 GWd/t) in the EBR-II. Fuel pellet properties were gathered from available resources and their irradiation and decay history evaluated. Further reactor physics calculations were performed to support the experiment design, reactor operations, and safety analyses necessary to enable the programmatic success of this effort. Of the three irradiated fuel pins, two will undergo transient testing, and all three will undergo post-irradiation examination. The methodology development and analysis activities utilized in this paper enable current experiment design work and provide the pathway through which measured data of this type can be further evaluated.

Abstract:Abstract The introduction of MOX fuel in modern nuclear fuel cycles has posed attention in all leading nuclear countries. However, the introduction of plutonium in the fuel loading in light water reactors has neutron-physical limitations. Improve the consumption of plutonium in MOX fuels is one of the important issues that have to be studied to decrease the risk of proliferation resistance. The impact of varying neutron spectrum on the discharged plutonium was studied through the variation of the fuel pellets diameter in a VVER type MOX fuel assembly without changing the lattice pitch. Neutronic calculations were performed using: MCU, Serpent, and GETERA codes. It was shown that the neutron spectrum plays a dominant role in the consumption and production of nuclides. Also, the usage of assemblies with high moderator to fuel volume ratio burned higher amounts of fissile plutonium in comparison with assemblies with low moderator to fuel volume ratio.
1 IAEA-CN-245-405 THE BN-800 CORE WITH MOX FUEL

Abstract:The initial BN-800 reactor core (so called hybrid c ore) is mainly composed of fuel subassemblies (FSAs) with enriched uranium oxide fuel and include s the limited quantity (16%) of MOX FSAs fabricated at experimental production facilities of MAYAK Product ion Association and JSC “SSC RIAR”. The full MOX fuel core will be formed as a result o f step-by-step replacement (three refuelings) of hy brid core FSAs by MOX FSAs fabricated at the Mining and Chemi cal Combine. To flatten power distribution, three t ypes of FSAs with the different plutonium content (enri chment) in the fuel are used in the core. A techniq ue to adjust plutonium enrichment depending on the fuel isotope composition makes it possible to fabricate MOX fuel based on plutonium with a wide range of its isotope compo siti n and to retain core operation parameters with in e design limits. To reduce the sodium void reactivity effect, the FS A design has an upper sodium plenum and the upper a bsorber shield of natural boron carbide. In the BN-800 core, the ChS-68 steel is used for fu el pin claddings the same as for standard fuel pins in BN-600. The operability of fuel pins with cladding of ChS-6 8 steel is ensured up to the damage dose of ~ 90 dp a, which as applied to BN-800 corresponds to the average fue l burnup of 66 MWd/kg.

Abstract:Measurements of the reaction rate distribution were carried out using two kinds of Plate Micro Fission Chamber(PMFC). The first is a depleted uranium chamber and the second an enriched uranium chamber. The material in the depleted uranium chamber is strictly the same as the material in the uranium assembly. With the equation solution to conduct the isotope contribution correction, the fission rate of 238U and 235U were obtained from the fission rate of depleted uranium and enriched uranium. And then, the fission count of 238U and 235U in an individual uranium shell was obtained. In this work, MCNP5 and continuous energy cross sections ENDF/BV.0 were used for the analysis of fission rate distribution and fission count. The calculated results were compared with the experimental ones. The calculation of fission rate of DU and EU were found to agree with the measured ones within 10% except at the positions in polyethylene region and the two positions near the outer surface. Beacause the fission chamber was not considered in the calculation of the fission counts of 238U and 235U, the calculated results did not agree well with the experimental ones.
