Abstract:In this work, the development of production of long-lived isomer {sup 178m2}Hf has been presented and the characteristics of relevant pathways have also been addressed. Considering the design parameters and operational status of reactors and accelerators, the possible approachs for {sup 178m2}Hf isomer production has been put forword in research programe. Through calculating the basic parameters of prodution of {sup 178m2}Hf isomer from two kinds of nuclear reactions {sup 176}Yb ({alpha}, 2n) and {sup 179}Hf (n, 2n), and camparing the advantages and disadvantages of these two production methods, an approriate scheme of producing 10{sup 13} {sup 178}m{sup 2}Hf nuclei has been designed. Abstract:This article describes the preparation of 99 Mo isotope using the direct nuclear reaction 98 Mo(n,γ) 99 Mo by neutrons of the WWR-K reactor using molybdenum (VI) oxide of natural and enriched composition, according to the isotope 98 Mo (98.66%) as a target. The possibility of using enriched 98 Mo oxide to produce 99 Mo was considered. The estimation of the maximum specific activity of 99 Mo was obtained in a comparative manner under the same irradiation conditions at the reactor.

Abstract:Rhenium-186 was produced from the reaction induced by 16 MeV deuterons on isotopically enriched 186W metal powder target. Following its separation from 187W, 183Ta and the bulk of target materials 186W through an acid alumina column, the 186Re was converted to HNO3 solution through an anion exchange column, or to ammonia solution by extracting with N-235-dimethylbenzene, and finally the no-carrier-added 186Re saline solution was obtained. The radionuclidic purity of 186Re was >99.9% and the isotopic impurities were mainly 183Re (5.0 × 10−3%) and 184gRe (4.6 × 10−2%). The experimental thick-target yield of 186Re was determined to be approximately 529 μCi/μA h and the overall chemical recovery yield was >80%.

Abstract:Abstract In a systematic study of light charged particle induced nuclear reactions we investigated the excitation functions of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on natural lutetium targets. Experimental excitation functions up to 50 MeV on high purity nat Lu were determined using the standard stacked foil activation technique. High resolution off-line gamma-ray spectrometry was applied to assess the activity of each foil. From the measured activity direct and/or cumulative elemental cross-section data for production of 171,172,173,175 Hf, 171,172,173,174g,176m,177m,177g Lu and 169 Yb radioisotopes were determined. The experimental data were compared to results of the TALYS theoretical code taken from the TENDL databases and results of our calculations using the ALICE-IPPE-D and the EMPIRE-D codes. No earlier experimental data were found in the literature. Thick target yields for the investigated radionuclides were calculated from the measured excitation functions.

Abstract:Excitation functions were measured for the formation of 181Re, 132Re, 182gRe, 183Re, 184mRe, 184gRe and 186Re in proton-induced reactions on natural tungsten in the energy range of 7.5-22.5 MeV. The excitation function for 186W(p,n)186Re reaction has been obtained with maximum cross section value of 41.6 ± 6.2 mb at the proton energy of 9.2 MeV. 186Re was produced from the reaction induced by 16 MeV protons on isotopically enriched 186W metal powder target. Following the separation from 187W, 183Ta and the bulk of target material 186W through an acid alumina column, 186Re was concentrated and purified by an anion exchange column, and finally the no-carrier-added 186Re saline solution was achieved. The radionuclidic purity of 186Re was > 99.2%. The experimental thick-target yield of 186Re was determined to be approximately 50 μCi/μAh, in good agreement with that estimated from the excitation function. © by Oldenbourg Wissenschaftsverlag, München.

Abstract:The production method of no-carrier added Lutetium-177 ( 177 Lu) was developed from a neutron-activated natural ytterbium (Yb) using column chromatography separation method. Dowex W50 X8 resin and a combination of alpha-hydroxyisobutyric acid (α-HIBA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) were used as column filler and eluent, respectively. HCl increased the desorption and separation between 177 Lu and Yb at a concentration of 0.25 M, while the optimal α-HIBA concentration was 0.15 M, resulting in 177 Lu yield of 81.19 % and low impurities ( 175 Yb: 9.28 %, and 169 Yb: 2.09 %). Nevertheless, further study using an enriched 176 Yb target is essential to significantly increase the specific activity of 177 Lu.

Optimization of Deuteron Irradiation of 176Yb for Producing 177Lu of High Specific Activity Exceeding 3000 GBq/mg

Abstract:The irradiation of 176Yb with deuterons offers a promising pathway for the production of the theranostic radionuclide 177Lu. To optimize this process, calculations integrating deuteron transport, isotope production, and decay have been performed. In pure 176Yb, the undesired production of 174g+mLu occurs at higher deuteron energies, corresponding to a distribution slightly shallower than that of 177Lu. Hence, 174g+mLu can be effectively filtered out by employing either a low-energy deuteron beam or stacked foils. The utilization of stacked foils enables the production of 177Lu using a high-energy linear accelerator. Another unwanted isotope, 176mLu, is produced roughly at the same depth as 177Lu, but its concentration can be significantly reduced by selecting an appropriate post-irradiation processing time, owing to its relatively short half-life. The modeling approach extended to the mapping of yields as a function of irradiation time and post-irradiation processing time. An optimized processing time window was identified. The study demonstrates that a high-energy deuteron beam can be employed to produce 177Lu with high specific activity exceeding 3000 GBq/mg. The effect of different purity levels (ranging from 98% to 100%) was also discussed. The impurity levels have a slight impact. The modeling demonstrates the feasibility of obtaining 177Lu with a specific activity > 3000 GBq/mg and radionuclidic purity > 99.5% when using a commercially available 176Yb target of 99.6% purity.

Abstract:Protactinium-231 has an attractive potential to reduce the initial excess-reactivity and to be effectively converted to the fissile nuclide 233U through 232U. Thus 231Pa serves as the burnable fertile material helping to achieve a long-life core. However the natural abundance of 231Pa is negligible. Therefore the production of 231Pa has been studied in a fusion blanket with a ThO2 zone which is irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons to cause the (n 2n) reaction in 232Th at a neutron wall load of 1MW/m2. The mass balance of 231Pa shows that the one fusion reactor with approximately 1.1 GWth and 1951t of ThO2 supports the one pebble bed-type gas cooled reactor with approximately 1 GWth and 10-year lifetime (700 GWD/t). It is also shown that the attractive fertile nuclide 231Pa is produced with a fissile nuclide 233U and a small fraction of 232U which enhances the proliferation resistance for the fissile product 233U due to the generation of high decay heat and strong gamma rays. In the present study the isotopic fraction of 232U is increased to over 2.4% by controlling the neutron spectrum in the ThO2 zone. As a result the fissile nuclide 233U could be always protected by 232U throughout the thorium fuel cycle based on 231 Pa.

Abstract:The results of neutron-physical and thermophysical calculations of different designs of capsules with lithium ceramics under irradiation in the WWR-K reactor are presented. The main conditions for irradiation of lithium ceramics in the WWR-K reactor core are described. Two types of reactor experiments with lithium ceramics have been shown to be possible: high-temperature irradiation with in-situ registration of tritium release and low-temperature irradiation with post-reactor experiments on sample degassing. When lithium ceramics are irradiated in the standard capsule, the temperature of the samples does not exceed 60°C, but when irradiated in the experimental device, the temperature of the samples can be raised to 800°C. The dependence of the temperature of the samples in the irradiation capsule of the experimental device on the reactor power is given. Estimates are given for the tritium yield in lithium ceramics (separately for 6Li(n,α)T and 7Li(n,αn)T nuclear reactions) for different neutron flux densities. The rate of tritium generation in the peripheral irradiation channel of the WWR-K will be ~2 105 s-1. The reactivity effect from loading a sample capsule into the core of the WWR-K will be minus 0.05 βeff for the standard capsule and minus 0.3 βeff for the experimental device.
Cross sections for 14 MeV neutron interaction with lutetium isotopes and their theoretical excitation functions

Abstract:The reaction cross-sections for the 175Lu(n,p)175Yb, 175Lu(n,α)172Tm, 176Lu(n,α)173Tm, 175Lu(n,2n)174mLu, and 175Lu(n,2n)174gLu reactions at the 13.57, 14.03 14.62 and 14.86 MeV neutron energies were measured by using an activation technique. The theoretical excitation functions of these reactions were calculated by using the Talys-1.95 code. The experimentally obtained reaction cross-section data were analyzed and compared with the literature experimental data, and the evaluated data of five major evaluated nuclear data libraries of IAEA, as well as with the theoretical values based on Talys-1.95. The present data at some neutron energies agree with some of the literature data, and with theoretical values based on Talys-1.95. The consistency of the theoretical curves of excitation functions based on Talys-1.95 with the present and literature data is better than that of the evaluation curves of excitation functions for the 175Lu(n,p)175Yb, 175Lu(n,α)172 Tm, and 176Lu(n,α)173Tm reactions. This work will be helpful to give new evaluated reaction cross-section data on the fusion reactor material lutetium to improve the quality of the neutron-induced reaction cross section data libraries, and advance the related application research.

Abstract:The WWR-K is 6-MW(thermal) light-water, tank-type reactor with thermal neutron spectrum. It is the exclusive multipurpose research reactor in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The WWR-K is owned by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The coolant is desalted water. The moderator and the reflector are desalted water and beryllium. The reactor operates on uranium dioxide that is enriched to 19.7% by 235U. The reactor is equipped with irradiation channels with the following characteristics: the thermal neutron flux density in the core center comprises 2 · 1014 cm−2s−1, whereas the fast neutron flux density (En > 0.1 MeV) comprises ~8 · 1013 cm−2s−1; in the core periphery, fluxes of the thermal and fast neutrons comprise, respectively, ~8 · 1013 and ~6 · 1012 cm−2s−1. The regular irradiation cycle length is 21 days. The annual number of cycles is ten.Since WWR-K reactor startup, the studies of various prospective reactor materials and fuels have been carried out in its core. Since 2000, activities on in-reactor tests of fusion reactor materials have been performed at the WWR-K reactor, such as experiments on tritium release out of lithium ceramics. Tests forced development and fabrication of an installation for in-reactor studies of tritium release from various candidate materials of fusion reactor blankets in the inert gas environment of an ampoule with specimens under study. Also, a technique has been developed for assessment of the time of tritium retention in materials under irradiation.In 2018, the WWR-K reactor facility was upgraded for studies of fusion reactor materials under irradiation, which makes it possible to carry out experiments on irradiation of specimens at vacuum conditions.This work presents the experimental facility description and block circuit along with its general technical capacities as applied to the expected studies of tritium release of fusion reactor materials at the WWR-K reactor. The developed irradiation ampoule device is presented schematically as well. Also, the obtained results of the neutron-physical, thermophysical, and vacuum calculations for the in-reactor experiment on irradiation of fusion reactor blanket materials are given.

Abstract:Nowadays, the WWR-K research reactor is operated with low-enriched uranium fuel and a beryllium neutron reflector. Irradiation positions located in the core make it possible to irradiate objects no larger than 50 mm in size. In the reactor tank, behind the beryllium reflector, there are irradiation positions with a diameter of 200 mm, but in them, in comparison with irradiation positions in the core, the neutron intensity is lower. This motivated us to carry out computational studies on the generation of a large diameter neutron trap in the center of the WWR-K reactor core. The paper presents the results of neutron-physical calculations on the generation of a neutron trap in the center of the WWR-K reactor core. The generation of a large diameter neutron trap in the core of the WWR-K reactor will make it possible to carry out radiation tests of large objects. For this, it is necessary to change the layout of the core. The influence of the transformation of the core on the experimental characteristics of the WWR-K reactor is shown.

Abstract:The increase in demand for irradiation activities in the WWR-K reactor dictates the need to increase the number of irradiation positions in the core. Several core designs were considered by simulation with using MCNP6 code. As a result, core consisting of 22 FAs of the 1st type and 4 FAs of the 2nd type was chosen. An analysis of the calculation results showed that the new design of the core improves the experimental characteristics of the reactor and, at the same time, ensures nuclear safety. In particular, the number of irradiation positions in the fuel area increases from 3 to 5, in the new core design. The maximum thermal neutron flux increases to 2.1x10 14 cm -2 s −1 . This paper presents the results of neutron analysis of the new WWR-K reactor core design in comparison with the existing.

Activation cross sections of proton induced nuclear reactions on tungsten: Special regard to the formation of 186 Re

Abstract:Cross-sections for the production of 181,182m,g,183,184g,186g Re radioisotopes from proton bombardment of natural tungsten have been measured using the stacked foil activation technique for proton energies up to 14.7 MeV. The results were analyzed and compared with the reported experimental data, and the theoretical excitation functions as calculated by the EMPIRE 3.2.3 and TALYS 1.9 codes. Several attempts have been made to reproduce the experimental excitation functions by different EMPIRE input parameters, and a reasonable agreement was attained. While measuring the activity of radionuclide 181 Re, the intensity of the emitted 360-keV γ-photon was estimated at around 10%, about half of the value reported in various databases. The integral yield of the investigated radioisotopes has been calculated, and a particular interest in the 186g Re therapeutic radionuclide was discussed.

Determination of irradiated reactor uranium in soil samples in Belarus using 236U as irradiated uranium tracer.

Abstract:This work presents experimental results on the distribution of irradiated reactor uranium from fallout after the accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in comparison to natural uranium distribution in different soil types. Oxidation processes and vertical migration of irradiated uranium in soils typical of the 30 km relocation area around Chernobyl NPP were studied using 236U as the tracer for irradiated reactor uranium and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry as the analytical method for uranium isotope ratio measurements. Measurements of natural uranium yielded significant variations of its concentration in upper soil layers from 2 x 10(-7) g g(-1) to 3.4 x 10(-6) g g(-1). Concentrations of irradiated uranium in the upper 0-10 cm soil layers at the investigated sampling sites varied from 5 x 10(-12) g g(-1) to 2 x 10(-6) g g(-1) depending on the distance from Chernobyl NPP. In the majority of investigated soil profiles 78% to 97% of irradiated "Chernobyl" uranium is still contained in the upper 0-10 cm soil layers. The physical and chemical characteristics of the soil do not have any significant influence on processes of fuel particle destruction. Results obtained using carbonate leaching of 236U confirmed that more than 60% of irradiated "Chernobyl" uranium is still in a tetravalent form, ie. it is included in the fuel matrix (non-oxidized fuel UO2). The average value of the destruction rate of fuel particles determined for the Western radioactive trace (k = 0.030 +/- 0.005 yr(-1)) and for the Northern radioactive trace (k = 0.035 + 0.009 yr(-1)) coincide within experimental errors. Use of leaching of fission products in comparison to leaching of uranium for study of the destruction rate of fuel particles yielded poor coincidence due to the fact that use of fission products does not take into account differences in the chemical properties of fission products and fuel matrix (uranium).

Abstract:BackgroundAccelerator-driven subcritical systems (ADS) are among the most promising options for next-generation nuclear power systems. Various radionuclides are produced during the process of protons bombarding the target in the ADS, and the cross-sections of various long-lived radionuclides have not been accurately measured. These long-lived nuclides are related to ADS radioactive waste treatment, therefore, accurate evaluation of long-lived radionuclides generated in ADS spallation targets is a key topic in applied research.PurposeThis study aims to determinate production cross-sections of natPb(p,x)207Bi and natPb(p,x)194Hg reactions according to measurement data, and compare them with existing experimental and theoretical results.MethodsThe proton activation method was employed to effectively estimate the cross section of long-lived nuclides produced by the interaction between protons and spallation target materials. Four proton-irradiated natural lead samples were irradiated with protons at energies of 40 MeV, 70 MeV, 100 MeV, and 400 MeV for 90 min, 75 min, 40 min, and 25 min, respectively. After cooling for approximately 20 a, the samples were measured using an ultralow background gamma spectrometer GeTHU in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), and the GeTHU detection efficiency was calculated using the Simulation and Analysis for Germanium Experiments (SAGE) simulation framework. Combined with the irradiation parameters of the samples, the total production cross-sections of the two nuclides were calculated using a cross-section calculation formula. Experimental results are evaluated and compared with those of existing studies.ResultsThe production cross-sections of natPb(p,x)207Bi reaction in the natural lead samples irradiated by protons with four different energies (40 MeV, 70 MeV, 100 MeV and 400 MeV) are calculated as (40.70±3.59) mb, (19.31±1.43) mb, (13.15±0.96) mb, and (2.90±0.22) mb, respectively. The calculated production cross-section of natPb(p,x)194Hg reaction in the natural lead sample irradiated by protons with an energy of 400 MeV is (57.07±7.83) mb. Based on the same samples, the measurement results of cross-section remain consistent within the error range. The cross-sections of natPb(p, x)207Bi are closer to TENDL's evaluated cross-sections. The cross-section of natPb(p, x)194Hg is consistent with the theoretical expectation of INCL++/ABLA. In addition, different sources that contribute to the total uncertainty of both reactions are explained in detail.ConclusionsThe production cross-sections of natPb(p,x)207Bi and natPb(p,x)194Hg reactions measured herein were calculated independently and showed good agreement with existing results. These results demonstrate that GeTHU is capable of measuring low-activity and long-lived radionuclides in the CJPL. Finally, the results of this study also provide the latest experimental evidence for the evaluation of radioactive waste in ADS.

Abstract:Re-186 and Re-188 are regarded as the best radionuclides used for radiotherapy and radioimmumotherapy. We are attempting to prepare Re-186 and Re-188 with high specific activity by the Szilard-Chalmers effect. A series of rhenium complexes were synthesized and then irradiated with thermal neutrons (neutron flux: 10(12) n/sec/cm(2)) for 1 hour. The recoiled radioactive rhenium atoms were separated from the target by stripping the dichloromethane solution of irradiated rhenium compound with an aqueous solution. Various aqueous stripping agents were tested. In the case of ReN(S2CNEt2)(2), an enrichment factor of 210 and a chemical yield of 36% were achieved. The product was in pure perrhenate form with specific activity of 0.72 GBq/mg Re (19.5 mCi/mg Re).

Abstract:The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double-vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. This titanium has been measured with activities of 238Ue  < 1.6 mBq/kg, 238Ul  < 0.09 mBq/kg, 232The=0.28±0.03 mBq/kg, 232Thl=0.25±0.02 mBq/kg, 40K  < 0.54 mBq/kg, and 60Co  < 0.02 mBq/kg (68% CL). Such low intrinsic activities, which are some of the lowest ever reported for titanium, enable its use for future dark matter and other rare event searches. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to assess the expected background contribution from the LZ cryostat with this radioactivity. In 1,000 days of WIMP search exposure of a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, the cryostat will contribute only a mean background of 0.160 ± 0.001(stat) ± 0.030(sys) counts.
