Abstract:Nb-Ti-Al alloys have attracted much attention as a potential candidate for high-temperature structural applications beyond the scope of Ni-based superalloys. Previously, Nb-Ti-Al alloys were prepared by arc-melting or hot-pressing. In this study, laser forming of the Nb-23Ti-15Al alloy is explored, and the microstructure and mechanical behaviors are systematically investigated. The results indicate that the nearly defectless Nb-Ti-Al alloy with fine dendrites could be obtained through laser forming. Three phases, β, δ and Ti(O,C), present in the alloy, and the β/δ matrix displays a columnar microstructure. Moreover, the Ti(O,C) phase, a solid-solution of TiO or TiC, appears in the alloy. Ti(O,C) is formed due to the introduction of the O and C from the elemental powder, which has a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure and a moderate lattice parameter between that of TiO and TiC. Two morphologies of Ti(O,C), large cobblestone-like particles and small dispersive particles, are observed in the alloy. Forbidden reflections of δ phase occur due to double diffraction and slight superlattice reflections of β phase arise. Furthermore, refined β/δ phases and dispersed small Ti(O,C) result in higher microhardness and fracture toughness. In brief, our results indicate that laser forming is a potential method for manufacturing Nb-Ti-Al alloys with prominent properties.
Selective Laser Melting of Crack-Free Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb Alloy: Improved Manufacturability by Powder Surface Modification Using Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Intermetallic gamma-TiAl based alloys have been developed for high-temperature lightweight applications in aerospace and automotive industries. However, their fabrication via selective laser melting (SLM) remains a great challenge due to the severe cracking issue and unsatisfied mechanical properties. In this study, we present a novel manufacturing strategy to significantly improve the printability of a Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb (Ti-4822, at.%) alloy for SLM by powder surface modification. Specially, graphene oxide (GO) sheets were decorated onto the metallic powder surface via the electrostatic adsorption process. Results indicated that crack-free samples could be fabricated by adding 0.1-0.5 wt.% GO during SLM experiments. The microstructure as affected by GO addition was characterized by backscatter electron imaging and electron backscatter diffraction, showing that the dual-phase (alpha(2) + gamma) cellular structure was refined at both grain and sub-grain scales. Further characterization by a three-dimensional focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy tomography demonstrated the increased volume fraction of gamma phase and the reduced porosity with GO addition. Finally, the surface strength of as-fabricated Ti-4822 was evaluated by microhardness test, demonstrating a maximal enhancement of 21.9% when modified using 0.3 wt.% GO. We envision that the proposed manufacturing strategy has provided new perspectives for the design and production of high-performance gamma-TiAl based alloys via SLM.

Abstract:A biomedical Ti15Mo (wt%) alloy possessing a proper combination of high strength and ductility was prepared using selective laser melting. The yield strength of the as-built specimen reached 728±34 MPa, which was 85% higher than that of the solution heat-treated sample; the elongation reached 37±6% without distinct ductility loss. The initial dislocations, grain texture, finer grains, and ω precipitates were demonstrated to be critical in achieving the proper combination of strength and ductility.

Abstract:This study focuses on exploring the application of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology in the preparation of titanium‐based nanocomposite materials. By introducing 0.5 wt.% graphene oxide (GO) and 7.0% nano molybdenum (Mo) powder, an attempt is made to improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of titanium alloy materials. The experimental results indicate that the microstructure of the titanium‐based nanocomposite material undergoes significant crystal refinement and phase transition behavior, suggesting a positive role of introducing nano‐reinforcing phases in crystal structure regulation. Simultaneously, the introduction of GO significantly improves the thermal conductivity of the material, contributing to more uniform energy transfer and temperature distribution, thereby optimizing the process control of laser melting. In terms of mechanical performance, through microhardness and tensile performance tests, the microhardness of TC4‐0.5GO‐7Mo increases by approximately 30.8% compared to pure TC4. This strengthening effect is primarily attributed to the uniform distribution of GO and Mo powder in the matrix, effectively hindering lattice slip and dislocation movement, enhancing the hardness and tensile properties of the material. Through a comprehensive analysis of microstructure and mechanical properties, not only is the mapping relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of titanium‐based nanocomposite materials clarified, but the strengthening mechanism is also revealed. Abstract:Graphene is an attractive reinforcement in enhancing performances of titanium matrix composites (TMCs). However, the fabrication of graphene reinforced TMCs components is challenging to conventional manufacturing technologies. Selective laser melting (SLM) shows great potential in fabrication of TMCs components. In this study, SLM was employed to fabricate graphene reinforced TMCs, and the effects of ball milling time on properties of composite powder and resultant SLM formability were investigated. The morphologies, chemical composition, flowability and phase constitute of composite powder were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Hall flowmeter and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The structure of graphene in composite powder was assessed by Raman spectroscopy. The formability of SLM scanning-track using different composite powder was also studied. The results showed that the composite powder, milled for 5 h, possessed good sphericity, good flowability and well-dispersion of graphene. Finally, the SLM-processed graphene reinforced TMCs, using the optimized composite powder, exhibited higher microhardness of 432.03 HV0.2, higher tensile strength of 1276 MPa and lower coefficient of friction of 0.3453 than that of the SLM-processed TC4, revealing the great improvement in mechanical performance of the SLM-processed TMCs by adding graphene.

Abstract:In this paper, Ti-47Al-2Cr-4Nb-0.3W alloys with trace multilayer graphene addition were fabricated by spark plasma sintering to enhance both mechanical properties and tribological property simultaneously. With the addition of multilayer graphene, bending strength, compressive strength and tribological property of TiAl alloys are all improved. When graphene content increases from zero to 0.8 at.%, the mean grain size decreases from 14.8 ± 1.4 μm to 8.2 ± 0.8 μm. The bending strength reaches almost 1000 MPa and the fracture strength increases to 2347 ± 12 MPa, an increase of 15% compared with TiAl alloy. The friction coefficient also decreases from about 0.6 to 0.4, a decrease by 1/3 compared with TiAl alloy. The reasons for the improved mechanical properties and tribological property are the in-situ reaction plate-shape Ti2AlC phase, fine needle-like Ti3AlC phase as well as fine and homogeneous microstructure. The wear mechanism changes from abrasive wear to abrasive wear plus adhesive wear with the increased graphene content.

Abstract:To realize near net-shaping of hard-to-process intermetallics is an often challenging but critical issue to their wider industrial applications. In this work, we report that an intermetallic Ti-22Al-25Nb has been successfully fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The as-printed samples show a high room-temperature ultimate tensile strength ~1090 MPa and excellent ductility ~22.7%; both values are higher than most conventionally fabricated Ti-22Al-25Nb intermetallic. We clarify the mechanical performance achieved by detailed microstructure analysis, including dislocation analysis and phase constitution analysis. High-density dislocation networks significantly contribute to the strength and ductility, which are further enhanced by the favorable phase constitution, including the nano-scale O phase precipitates within the disordered β phase and disappearance of the brittle α2 phase in the microstructure. Phase evolution during SLM has also been clarified using in situ heating, high-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Scheil simulation, particularly regarding the O phase's formation. It is demonstrated that O phase is formed by shearing primary cubic B2 phase along (110)[111] direction into an orthorhombic structure under high residual stress. Furthermore, a demonstrative part of turbine blade has been fabricated to highlight the importance of SLM in fabricating critical structural part like the hard-to-process intermetallics.
The Martensitic Transformation and Mechanical Properties of Ti6Al4V Prepared Via Selective Laser Melting

Abstract:This article investigated the microstructure of Ti6Al4V that was fabricated via selective laser melting; specifically, the mechanism of martensitic transformation and relationship among parent β phase, martensite (α’) and newly generated β phase that formed in the present experiments were elucidated. The primary X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and tensile test were combined to discuss the relationship between α’, β phase and mechanical properties. The average width of each coarse β columnar grain is 80–160 μm, which is in agreement with the width of a laser scanning track. The result revealed a further relationship between β columnar grain and laser scanning track. Additionally, the high dislocation density, stacking faults and the typical ( 10 1 ¯ 1 ) twinning were identified in the as-built sample. The twinning was filled with many dislocation lines that exhibited apparent slip systems of climbing and cross-slip. Moreover, the α + β phase with fine dislocation lines and residual twinning were observed in the stress relieving sample. Furthermore, both as-built and stress-relieved samples had a better homogeneous density and finer grains in the center area than in the edge area, displaying good mechanical properties by Feature-Scan. The α’ phase resulted in the improvement of tensile strength and hardness and decrease of plasticity, while the newly generated β phase resulted in a decrease of strength and enhancement of plasticity. The poor plasticity was ascribed to the different print mode, remained support structures and large thermal stresses.

Abstract:The high solidification rate of selective laser melting (SLM) induced a non-equilibrium microstructure in as-fabricated Ti-alloys. In this investigation, a metastable β Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-1Zr alloy was successfully fabricated by SLM on a preheated substrate at 700°C. The effects of preheating temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-fabricated specimens were systematically studied. The phase identification and electron microscopic results demonstrated that the 700°C preheating temperature enabled the transformation of metastable β structure into an α+β structure with massive amounts of nano-sized α precipitates. Consequently, the SLM-fabricated specimen after preheating process possessed higher ultimate tensile strength and hardness at 1440 MPa and 8.24 GPa, respectively. This work showed an alternative for SLM to tackle non-equilibrium microstructure and to increase the strength of metastable Ti-alloys by introducing high temperature preheating.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:To increase the processability and plasticity of the selective laser melting (SLM) fabricated Al–Mn–Mg–Er–Zr alloys, a novel TiB 2 -modified Al–Mn–Mg–Er–Zr alloy with a mixture of Al–Mn–Mg–Er–Zr and nano-TiB 2 powders was fabricated by SLM. The processability, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the alloy were systematically investigated by density measurement, microstructure characterization, and mechanical properties testing. The alloys fabricated at 250 W displayed higher relative densities due to a uniformly smooth top surface and appropriate laser energy input. The maximum relative density value of the alloy reached (99.7 ± 0.1)%, demonstrating good processability. The alloy exhibited a duplex grain microstructure consisting of columnar regions primarily and equiaxed regions with TiB 2 , Al 6 Mn, and Al 3 Er phases distributed along the grain boundaries. After directly aging treatment at a high temperature of 400°C, the strength of the SLM-fabricated TiB 2 /Al–Mn–Mg–Er–Zr alloy increased due to the precipitation of the secondary Al 6 Mn phases. The maximum yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the aging alloy were measured to be (374 ± 1) and (512 ± 13) MPa, respectively. The SLM-fabricated TiB 2 /Al–Mn–Mg–Er–Zr alloy demonstrates exceptional strength and thermal stability due to the synergistic effects of the inhibition of grain growth, the incorporation of TiB 2 nanoparticles, and the precipitation of secondary Al 6 Mn nanoparticles.

Abstract:A biomedical Ti15Mo (wt%) alloy with a relative density of 99.9% was successfully fabricated using selective laser melting. Characterization of its microstructure revealed that it possessed a β phase with embedded nanometer-sized isothermal ω precipitates, accompanied by a large number of dislocations. The formation of isothermal ω precipitates was ascribed to the effect of in-situ heat treatment, and resulting to a superior strength of the as-built Ti15Mo. The existence of isothermal ω precipitates triggered a dislocation slip instead of {332}<113> twins, and the interaction between gliding dislocations with ω precipitates significantly enhanced the yield strength of as-built Ti15Mo to 1000–1200 MPa, which is significantly higher than that of solution-treated Ti15Mo with about 400–700 MPa. The grain size, amount of isothermal ω precipitates increased with decreasing scanning speed, but the number of defects was just opposite. The defects, as potential sites for crack initiation, had a significant influence on the elongation but a negligible influence on the yield strength of the as-built Ti15Mo alloy.

Abstract:The in-situ nanoscale TiC particles reinforced Ti6Al4V composites was prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) from the mixture of Ti6Al4V alloy powders and graphene powders, the microstructure and interface bonding of the composites were studied. The composites were mainly composed of α, α' martensite and α+β structures. More TiC were formed in the overlapping regions than that in the molten pool, the solidification rate in overlapping regions was slow, which was beneficial to TiC nucleation and growth. The TiC and Ti matrix displayed following orientation relationships: axis [0 0 1]β-Ti∥[-1 -1 1]TiC∥[0 -1 1 0 ]α-Ti, lattice plane (2 2 2)TiC //(0 0 0 2)α-Ti, lattice plane (1 1 1)TiC//(0 0 0 2)α-Ti, lattice plane (1 1 1)TiC//(1 0 -1 0)α-Ti. The TiC and Ti matrix have a small degree (6.2%) of mismatch between (1 1 1)TiC and (0 0 0 2)α-Ti, and the semi-coherent interface was occurred. TiC preferentially nucleated and grew up along its (1 1 1) plane. The situ synthesized TiC was added into the Ti6Al4V alloy, refined the grains, and increased the microhardness of the alloy. The microhardness of the composites was 13.6% higher than that of Ti6Al4V alloy. The TiC effectively pinned the dislocations and grain boundaries were responsible for the enhanced mechanical properties of the composites.

Abstract:This work aims to study the influence of laser power on the microstructural evolution of novel Ti–6Zr–5Fe alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructural evolutions of all top surfaces in SLM Ti–6Zr–5Fe alloy samples fabricated from 80 W to 140 W were investigated in depth. The microstructure in SLM Ti–6Zr–5Fe alloy includes α phase and β phase, the size of the β phase and α phase increases with the increase of laser power due to the decrease of cooling rate. Meanwhile, the melt pool overlapping width increases with the increase of melt pool width due to the increase of laser power. The increase of melt pool overlapping causes the re-heating or re-melting of SLM Ti–6Zr–5Fe alloy. Moreover, as the laser power increases from 80 W to 140 W, the change of the melt pool greatly influenced the size, morphology, crystallographic orientation of the β phase, and their distributions. The increase of laser power causes adequate precipitation of the α phase, which improves the microhardness from 466 HV to 533 HV. The laser power can effectively regulate and control the microstructure and microhardness of SLM Ti alloys.

Abstract:A TiB2/AlMgScZr composite was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with direct powder mixing. The microstructure and mechanical properties of SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr composites were investigated. Nearly fully dense and crack-free SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr parts were obtained. The results showed that TiB2 formed a coherent relationship with the matrix and was swallowed by the solid–liquid interface as a nucleation point to refine grains during the SLM process. In addition, some TiB2 particles did not form a coherent relationship with the matrix, moving the solid–liquid interface at the grain boundary, which reduced the recrystallization fraction and refined the grains significantly. TiB2 also promoted the precipitation of Al3Sc and Al3Zr phases and increased the volume fraction of the Al3Sc and Al3Zr phases during the SLM process. The SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr composites showed a very high ultimate tensile strength of ∼483 MPa and excellent ductility of ∼15.8%, which are higher than those of wrought Al alloys. The solid solubility of the Mg element slightly increased in the SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgScZr composites because of the high heating and cooling rate during the SLM process. The high heating and cooling rate caused discontinuous strain and Portevin–Le Chatelier effect and weakened the strengthening effect of TiB2 in SLM-fabricated TiB2/AlMgSc composites.

Abstract:In this study, LaB6-reinforced Ti6Al4V was successfully fabricated by the selective laser melting (SLM) process. TiB and La2O3 with particle-like shapes formed uniformly after the in-situ reaction of LaB6 and Ti6Al4V. The sizes of the TiB and La2O3 particles were around 1 µm and 200 nm, respectively. Due to a combined strengthening effect of the micrometer-scale and nanoscale reinforcements, the mechanical properties of the LaB6/Ti6Al4V samples were enhanced significantly. However, the effect was highly related to the SLM parameters. As the laser power increased, the TiB changed from particle to needle-like shape and La2O3 tended to aggregate and grow into a larger size. Besides, the martensite α-Ti also became coarser, which was disadvantageous to the mechanical performance. The desired inner structure can be obtained by adjusting the processing parameters of the SLM. The best mechanical performance of the SLM LaB6/Ti6Al4V samples was achieved at the laser power of 260 W and the scanning speed of 500 mm/s. The maximum tensile strength and Vickers hardness were 1337.1 MPa and 477.62 HV, respectively, which outperformed the other counterparts significantly. Thus, the results suggest that the in-situ reaction of LaB6 and Ti6Al4V can improve the mechanical properties of the Ti6Al4V alloys effectively.

Abstract:Ball-milled Ti/TiC composite particles (TiC nanoparticles assembled on Ti microparticles) were designed, prepared, and mixed with Al-Si-Mg powder to fabricate an Al-Si-Mg-Ti alloy with TiC nanoparticles (Al-Si-Mg-Ti/TiC) by selective laser melting (SLM). Microstructure features, solidification behavior, and mechanical properties were investigated, and the relationship among them was established. The SLM-manufactured Al-Si-Mg-Ti/TiC material exhibited fine equiaxed-shaped α(Al) grains with nanoscale Si4Ti5 phases and Mg segregation along the grain boundaries. This structure benefited from heterogeneous nucleation as well as the grain growth restriction capabilities of TiC nanoparticles on α(Al), fast diffusion of Ti in the superheated Al liquid, and high chemical activity of Ti to Si during solidification. Furthermore, Ti enrichment in some local areas of the high-temperature pool and the consequently intense Marangoni convection improved the wettability between TiC nanoparticles and liquid Al without the interfacial reaction. Consequently, the SLM-manufactured Al-Si-Mg-Ti/TiC showed a high ultimate tensile strength of up to 562 ± 7 MPa and an elongation of up to 8.8% ± 1.3% before fracture. These increased mechanical properties are attributed to the combined effect of grain refinement and Orowan and load-bearing strengthening mechanisms.

Abstract:In this work, a near-beta Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe titanium alloy was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM), and the microstructure evolution together with the mechanical properties was studied. The as-fabricated alloy showed columnar β grains spreading over multiple layers and paralleling to the building direction. The distinct microstructure of as-fabricated alloy was composed of near-β (more than 98.1 %) with a submicron cellular structure. Different SLM processing parameters such as hatch spacing could affect the microstructure of as-fabricated alloy, which could thus further significantly affect the mechanical properties of as-fabricated alloy. In addition, the as-fabricated alloy with the distinct microstructure exhibits yield strength of 818 MPa combined with elongation of more than 19 %, which shows that SLM is a potential technology for manufacturing near-beta titanium components.

Effect of Overlapping Remelting on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Selective Laser‐Melted Ti‐6Al‐4V Alloy

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) is a common technology of additive manufacturing in which the factors determining the final performance are laser power, scanning speed, powder thickness, energy density, to name a few. Herein, the mechanical properties and microstructures of Ti‐6Al‐4 V alloy prints, prepared by SLM technology under different overlapping remelting areas and energy densities, are systematically investigated. The results indicate that with the overlapping remelting area and energy densities increasing, the maximum pore diameter and the number of relatively large pore decrease, and the thickness of the prior‐β lamellae and the number of the nano‐β phase precipitated increase, which plays a significant role in the mechanical properties. Concretely, the mechanical performances of the as‐built Ti‐6Al‐4 V alloys are enhanced due to the decrease of large pores. Moreover, the β phase precipitated and the thick β lamellae can dramatically improve the strength and plasticity, respectively. When the overlapping ratio and volume energy density reach up to 20% and 44.05 J mm−3, respectively, the comprehensive mechanical properties under the synergistic effect of pores and microstructures stand out. The decrease of the maximum pore diameter and the number of large pore, along with the increase of the number of β phase precipitated can significantly enhance the strength. The increase of the lamellae thickness simultaneously improves the plasticity and reduces the strength. Therefore, when the overlapping ratio approaches 20%, the comprehensive mechanical properties are better.

Abstract:The phase composition, dislocation density and crystallographic texture associated with the mechanical properties of Ti–15Mo alloys fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with various scanning strategies have been systematically studied in this work. The weak α′ phases were formed in the samples besides the β phases regardless of what types of scanning strategies were used owing to the oxygen residue in the powders and the gaps of powders. The texture of Ti–15Mo alloy can be altered with different scanning strategies: When the scanning rotation angles are changed from 0° to 90°, the texture orientation is transformed from to . The rotation between the layers can break the columnar grains into fine grains and the grain size are 0.83 μm (0°-sample I), 0.49 μm (45°-sample II), 0.61 μm (90°-sample IIII) and 0.55 μm (chessboard-sample IV), respectively. The tensile strength of the samples I, II, III and IV are 867.5 ± 4.7 MPa, 898.6 ± 7.3 MPa, 839.8 ± 5.1 MPa and 1001.1 ± 10.9 MPa, respectively. The contributions of the high strength to the Ti–15Mo alloy fabricated by SLM are stemmed from the comprehensive results of the phase composition, grain size, density dislocation and crystallographic texture.
