Abstract:Two series of ZSM-5 catalysts with hierarchical porosity were hydrothermally synthesized by adding two types of organosilane reagents (OSA) into the medial synthesis system. The effects of the types and addition amounts of OSA on the pore characteristics, crystallinity, morphology and acidity of the ZSM-5 zeolites were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, N2-adsorption, 27Al MAS NMR and NH3-TPD. Mesopores were generated by introducing appropriate amounts of OSA. In addition, the catalytic performance of the hierarchical ZSM-5s were investigated for the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose. The increase in the mesoporosity leads to a reduced amount of coke. However, the highest yield of aromatics was obtained for the mesoporous sample with the greatest microporosity. Thus, the right balance between meso- and microporosity is critical for achieving high aromatic yields. In addition, the distribution of aromatic products is directly related to the microporosity.

Abstract:ZSM-5 with hierarchical pore structure was synthesized by a simple two-step hydrothermal crystallization from silica fume without using any organic ammonium templates. The synthesized ZSM-5 were oval shaped particles with a particle size about 2.0 μm and weak acid-dominated with proper Brønsted (B) and Lewis (L) acid sites. The ZSM-5 was used for catalytic co-cracking of n-octane and guaiacol, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and alkali lignin (AL) to enhance the production of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene(BTEX). The most significant synergistic effect occurred at n-octane/guaiacol at 1:1 and LDPE/AL at 1:3, under the condition, the achieved BTEX selectivity were 24% and 33%(mass) higher than the calculated values (weighted average). The highest BTEX selectivity reached 88.5%, which was 3.7% and 54.2% higher than those from individual cracking LDPE and AL. The synthesized ZSM-5 exhibited superior catalytic performance compared to the commercial ZSM-5, indicating potential application prospect.

Abstract:Core–shell composite ZSM-5@MCM-41 was synthesized by a two-step process, in which both self-assembly crystallization and Stöber method were applied. The tunable mesoporous shells with thickness of 25 to 145 nm were obtained by adjusting the mass ratio of TEOS/ZSM-5 from 1.0 to 2.0. Higher mesopore volume was observed with thicker shells, in which microporous structures were well-maintained. To explore the effect of shell thickness on the reaction, the n -heptane catalytic cracking was chosen as the model reaction. The catalytic performance of ZSM-5@MCM-41 was obviously enhanced by introducing MCM-41 shell, comparing with ZSM-5 zeolite alone. The passivation of external surface acid sites of core ZSM-5 largely inhibited the undesirable bimolecular reaction of light olefins. Meanwhile the increased MCM-41 shell thickness provided much less diffusion resistance. The above effects jointly improved n -heptane conversion and light olefin selectivity. It is confirmed in this work that suitable acid sites distribution and enhanced diffusion by applying hierarchical structure is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity of ZSM-5 in n -heptane cracking.
Preparation of sodium silicate/red mud-based ZSM-5 with glucose as a second template for catalytic cracking of waste plastics into useful chemicals

Abstract:ZSM-5 was economically synthesized with red mud (RM) and industrial sodium silicate (ISS) in a tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr)–glucose dual-template system. The roles of glucose, Fe and Ca in RM on the formation of ZSM-5 were investigated. The catalytic performances of the resultant ZSM-5 were tested by cracking waste plastics. It was found that the formation of ZSM-5 was attributed to a synergistic effect between TPABr and glucose. The addition of glucose decreased the pH value in the crystallization solution and thus promoted the crystallization effect. Glucose acted as a hard template to generate mesopores. Fe atoms were partly distributed in the framework and partly adsorbed in the pores of ZSM-5, and helped to generate more Lewis acid sites. Ca atoms were mainly adsorbed in the pores of ZSM-5, and showed an inhibitory effect on the formation of zeolites. The synthesized ZSM-5 showed a weakly acidic and mesoporous structure and achieved an enhanced effect on producing gaseous products (gas yield: 85.3%), especially light olefins (C 2–4 ) (selectivity: 77.1%) from cracking of low density polyethylene at 500 °C. The long-term cracking experiment showed that the synthesized ZSM-5 is superior in converting waste plastics to light olefins (ethylene and propene) than the commercial ZSM-5.

Abstract:Minimizing the catalyst cost is critical to achieving long-term economic feasibility for obtaining bio-chemicals directly from biomass. In the present study, low cost ZSM-5 was synthesized via hydrothermal crystallization of the activated aluminosilicate gel without adding any organic ammonium templates and additional seed crystals. The activation process promoted the depolymerization of the silica-alumina species and the formation of active pasty gel containing nucleation precursors, consequently accelerating the subsequent crystallization reaction. The addition of eucalyptus sawdust (ES) in the synthesis process increased the BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area and acidity of the resultant zeolites. The ES-mediated ZSM-5 (AGZ-10) achieved a higher benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) carbon yield (18.9 %) from co-cracking of ES and waste plastics (WP) (ES/WP mass ratio at 1:1) at 500 °C and exhibited better synergistic effect and anti-coking ability compared to the commercial ZSM-5. The results provide an efficient synthetic strategy to produce low-cost zeolites, and a promising technique to effectively utilize biomass and plastic wastes.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolites with hierarchical porosity have been an increasing attention due to their improvement in diffusion limitation issue. This work here reports that hierarchical porous ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using fumed silica and as-synthesized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as dual-silica source for the first time with the aid of silicate-1 seed. The effects of the amounts of silicate-1 seed and as-synthesized MSNs on crystallinity, morphology, mesoporous structure and acidity of the prepared ZSM-5 zeolites were systematically investigated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption and NH 3 -TPD techniques. The results showed that mesopores can be incorporated by introducing an appropriate amount of as-synthesized MSNs which also promote the crystallization of aluminosilicate at the same time. Moreover, the mesoporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolites can be flexibly regulated within a certain range via varying the dosage of as-synthesized MSNs. The obtained optimal sample Z-0.02ã0.2 with high crystallinity and bi-modal mesopores centered at 2.1ô nm and 3.4ô nm exhibits significantly improved catalytic performance in LDPE cracking on a TG apparatus, compared with the conventional mono-modal microporous ZSM-5 zeolite. This approach constitutes a simple and low-cost pathway to synthesize ZSM-5 zeolites with controllable hierarchical porous architecture and might facilitate their industrial application.

Abstract:The catalytic pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene over hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite was studied to improve liquid oil quality in a facile reactor for the first time. The HZZ was successfully synthesized by using green and inexpensive nanocrystalline cellulose as a mesoporous template. Nanocrystalline cellulose played a disturbing role in the crystallization process of hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite, which facilitated the formation of ordered surface morphology and excellent porous structure. Compared with conventional HZSM-5, hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite can significantly improve the bio-oil yield. The relative content of cycloalkanes increased while the relative content of aromatics decreased. The 94.4 area.% of jet fuel range hydrocarbons with 51.8 area.% cycloalkanes and 25.0 area.% of aromatics can be obtained. Hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite with a low Si/Al ratio had high acidity favors high liquid yield and aromatic hydrocarbon selectivity. The current work contributes to the green synthesis of Hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite while providing a novel catalyst for value-added fuels production from waste plastics pyrolysis.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of cellulose is of scientific significance and a great challenge for both fundamental and industrial studies. Herein, we synthesized MesoZSM-5 zeolites by using nanocrystalline cellulose as a template for the first time, and reported the exciting performance of the corresponding non-noble metal catalysts (Ni/MesoZSM-5) for efficient conversion of cellulose to hexitols. By modulating the ratio of the template to precursor, MesoZSM-5 supports were produced with tunable pore structure and acidic sites. With the cooperation of active Ni sites and acidic sites of MesoZSM-5, hexitols were obtained with a high yield of around 60% in the direct conversion of commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The corresponding correlation between the structural characteristics and catalytic performance was established. This work provides a new approach for efficient utilization of cellulose, as well as gives rise to a sustainable templating method for the synthesis of mesoporous zeolites.

Abstract:Nanoscale ZSM-5 zeolites (NZSM-5) having different crystal sizes and Si/tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) molar ratios were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. These materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and N 2 adsorption–desorption. The results showed that each zeolite was highly crystalline regardless of the Si/TPAOH ratio and that the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas were in the range of 329−392 m 2 /g. The random aggregation of these nanoparticles resulted in the formation of numerous intergranular mesopores. These NZSM-5 zeolites were applied to the catalytic cracking of oleic acid to prepare light olefins and light aromatics using a laboratory-scale fixed bed reactor. The zeolite having a Si/TPAOH ratio of 10/5 showed the best catalytic activity and provided light olefins yield of 55% and selectivity of BTX in liquid phase products of 18%, respectively, at 500 °C. The small crystal size and abundant intergranular mesopores in this specimen resulted in shorter diffusion paths and an increase in the external specific surface area that both inhibited coke deposition and ensured accessible acid sites.

Abstract:Hierarchical macro/microporous ZSM-5 zeolite (defined as ZSM-5(MM)) was successfully synthesized by using silica spheres as silica source. The effects of template, sodium ions, hydroxyl ions, aluminum and water contents as well as crystallization temperature on the morphology and pore structure of ZSM-5 were investigated in detail. The formation mechanism was studied by XRD, SEM, N2 sorption, ICP-AES, XPS, 27Al MAS NMR and 29Si MAS NMR, confirming that the silica spheres during synthesis process were served as not only silica nutrients to accelerate the generation of crystal nucleus, but also morphology guiding agents that induce the formation of macro/microporous structure followed by quasi solid hydrogel transformation mechanism. The prepared ZSM-5(MM) zeolite exhibited much longer catalytic lifetime and higher light olefins selectivity in the methanol to olefins (MTO) than those of the conventional microporous sample. This is because the hierarchical macro/microporous structure can effectively improve the diffusion of feedstocks and products, suppressing the rapid coke deposition. Meanwhile, the contribution of alkene cycle in MTO is enhanced and it produces more propene and butene.

Abstract:A simple strategy for synthesizing mesoporous zeolite ZSM-5 via gel conversion was successfully developed with polyethyleneglycol as mesopore directing agent. It is revealed that the gel obtained after 9-15 h evaporation of solvents could be transferred into mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite after treatment at 160 degrees C for 24 h. However, pure ZSM-5 zeolite or mesoporous silica was achieved with too short or too long evaporation periods. The results indicate that the gelation process through solvent evaporation controls the hierarchical structure formation kinetically, which not only provides an appropriate amount of water for zeolite crystallization, but also prevents the phase-separation between zeolite and amorphous phases. Due to the introduction of the mesoporosity of several tens of nanometers in size, this hierarchical micro/mesostructured zeolite exhibits enhanced catalytic activities in the large molecules involved reactions, including aldol condensation of benzaldehyde with n-butyl alcohol and Pechmann reaction of resorcinol with ethylacetoacetate.

Abstract:The textural properties of zeolite catalysts have great influence on the aromatics production during co-cracking of phenolic bio-oil and hydrogen donors, such as ethanol. Through a generalized hydrothermal treatment mediated by ammonia, a series of micron or nano-ZSM-5 with different mesostructure distributions could be easily obtained. The major products of co-cracking with ethanol were analyzed in detail along with structural parameters and acidity properties of the corresponding catalysts. Nanoparticle sizes can effectively increase the cracking performance, especially promoting methoxyl removal. By introducing mesopores into ZSM-5, the co-cracking performance was altered significantly and no longer had good correlation with the concentration of acid sites. The topological shape and position of mesopores had a bigger effect, and the ordered mesopores on the outer surface along with internal mesopores with wide openings were more favorable than hollow mesopores inside with narrow openings. This tendency towards mesopore morphology can be quantified by several structural parameters. Between three kinds of mesostructure distribution, the core-shell ZSM-5 showed optimal performance with the highest BTEX yield and deoxygenation efficiency, due to its improved diffusion of reactants and intermediates. This result can provide reference for the forthcoming design of microporous-mesoporous composite zeolites with more highly ordered mesoporosity for the severe coke deposition reaction.

Abstract:Uniform mesoporous zeolite ZSM-5 crystals have been successfully fabricated through a simple hydrothermal synthetic method by utilizing ammonium-modified chitosan and tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as the meso- and microscale template, respectively. It was revealed that mesopores with diameters of 5-20 nm coexisted with microporous network within mesoporous ZSM-5 crystals. Ammonium-modified chitosan was demonstrated to serve as a mesoporogen, self-assembling with the zeolite precursor through strong static interactions. As expected, the prepared mesoporous ZSM-5 exhibited greatly enhanced catalytic activities compared with conventional ZSM-5 and Al-MCM-41 in reactions involving bulky molecules, such as the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of 2-hydroxyacetophenone with benzaldehyde and the esterification reaction of dodecanoic acid and 2-ethylhexanol.

Abstract:In the traditional hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites, the solvent of water is necessary for crystallization, so large amount of wastewater containing NaOH and organic pollutants could be inevitably produced. The solvent-free route is considered to remarkably enhance the synthesis efficiency and reduce the energy and pollutants in large scale production of zeolites, but the zeolites obtained usually consist of micrometer sized single crystals which only possess micropores and long diffusion pathway for molecules. In this study, a novel solvent-free synthesis system made of solid raw materials of anhydrous silica and aluminum sources, organic template and Na2CO3 center dot 10H(2)O, was demonstrated to synthesize ZSM-5 zeolite particles composed of nanocrystals of about 10-40 nm in size. The obtained ZSM-5 particles possess high crystallinity and surface area, and well-developed mesoporosity (5.2 nm) and excellent catalytic activity in polymer cracking, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which is the main source of white pollution. Facile Synthesis of Nanosheet-Stacked Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolite for Efficient Catalytic Cracking of n-Octane to Produce Light Olefins

Abstract:The development of an effective strategy for synthesizing two-dimensional MFI zeolites has attracted more and more attention. Herein, nanosheet-stacked hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite was obtained by a seed-assisted hydrothermal synthesis route using a small amount of [C18H37-N+(CH3)2-C6H12-N+(CH3)2-C6H12]Br2 (C18-6-6Br2) as a zeolite structure-directing agent and triethylamine (TEA) as a zeolite growth modifier. By varying the molar ratio of C18-6-6Br2/TEA from 2.5/0 to 2.5/40, the morphologies and textural properties of the resultant HZ5-2.5/x catalysts were finely modulated. By increasing x from 5 to 40, the morphology of the HZ5-2.5/x changed from unilamellar assembly with narrow a–c plane to intertwined nanosheets with wide a–c plane and multilamellar nanosheets with house-of-cards morphology. The thickness of these nanosheets was almost 8–10 nm. In addition, selectivity to light olefins reached 70.7% for the HZ5-2.5/10 catalyst, which was 6.6% higher than that for CZSM-5 (64.1%). Furthermore, the MFI zeolite nanosheets exhibited better anticoking stability within the 60 h reaction time compared to conventional ZSM-5 zeolite, which could be attributed to the short diffusion path and hierarchical porosity. This work will provide valuable insights into the rational design of novel zeolite catalysts for the efficient cracking of hydrocarbons.

Abstract:A series of ZSM-5 zeolites with tunable mesoporosity were synthesized by a facile ultrasound-assisted method. XRD, FT-IR and NH3-TPD results exhibited that as-synthesized ZSM-5 kept the MFI structure as well as the original acidity. Traced by TEM techniques, the crystallization process, especially the state of initial amorphous gel, was found notably affected by the ultrasound treatment by breaking the weak bonds, which led to formation of mesopores in crystals. The ZSM-5 catalysts with abundant mesoprores inhibited coking significantly and showed high catalytic stability for methanol to propylene reaction. The Z5-us-60 catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic stability for > 600 h at a high WHSV of 4.0 h(-1).
Tuning the morphology and textural properties of ZSM-5 additive for co-cracking of waste plastics with vacuum gas oil to light olefins

Abstract:Typical cracking catalysts, called equilibrium catalyst (E-Cat) are ultra-stable Y (USY) zeolite often used with 15% commercial ZSM-5 zeolite additive (ZSM-5(COM)) to boost olefin yield. In this study, similar additive zeolites with different pore sizes and acidic character were synthesized by rapid ageing of precursor solution and used in the co-cracking of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and heavy vacuum gas oil (HVGO). Three ZSM-5 zeolites additives with Si/Al ratio 25 (ZSM-5(25)), 50 (ZSM-5(50)) and 75 (ZSM-5(75)) were synthesized and combined with E-Cat to form E-Cat/ZSM-5(25), E-Cat/ZSM-5(50) and E-Cat/ZSM-5(75) respectively. The E-Cat/ZSM-5(50) has slightly better endothermic conversion (cracking) of a mixture of dissolved LDPE and HVGO into H2, C1 to C4 gases and C2-C4 light olefins (total conversion of E-Cat 80.0%, E-Cat/ZSM-5(COM) 75.0% and E-Cat/ZSM-5(50) 83.7% respectively), with different gas, liquid and coke distributions. The E-Cat/ZSM-5(75) has 81% conversion, and highest yield of light olefins (38.4%). Structural (surface area, pore size) and chemical (acid sites) characteristics of the synthetized ZSM-5(75) zeolite explain the observed higher light olefin selectivity by different and competing catalytic routes. The ZSM-5(75) has demonstrated to be a good zeolite additive for converting dissolved plastic in HVGO into light olefins.

Abstract:The effect of the basic (NaOH) and/or acid (citric acid and EDTA-2Na) treatment of ZSM-5 zeolite has been studied comparing the structural and acidic features and their catalytic performance in n-heptane cracking. The properties of the catalysts have been elucidated using XRD, N2 low-temperature sorption, 27Al and 29Si NMR, pyridine adsorbed FTIR, NH3–TPD, SEM and TEM analysis. The results showed that the degree of desilication and dealumination of ZSM-5 zeolites was greatly dependent on the agents. NaOH obviously created new mesopores on parent ZSM-5 zeolites by desilication. Citric acid contributed to the removal of nonframework Al species, causing the increase of micropore surface area. EDTA-2Na promoted desilication and simultaneously converted part of removed framework Al species into nonframework Al species. The treatment of ZSM-5 combined with those three agents was very effective to obtain a hierarchical structure with partial breakdown of the crystallites and high acid amounts of both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites. Catalytic tests showed that the post-treated ZSM-5 catalysts had higher activity and stability than parent ZSM-5 catalyst at the same reaction temperature. The synergetic effect of Brönsted acid and Lewis acid of ZSM-5 catalyst (Z5-ACE) probably facilitated n-heptane conversion, while more clean micropore and newly created mesopores facilitated the slight increase of olefin selectivity and suppressing the formation of coke deposition in its inherent micropores to some extent.
