Abstract:Two series of ZSM-5 catalysts with hierarchical porosity were hydrothermally synthesized by adding two types of organosilane reagents (OSA) into the medial synthesis system. The effects of the types and addition amounts of OSA on the pore characteristics, crystallinity, morphology and acidity of the ZSM-5 zeolites were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, N2-adsorption, 27Al MAS NMR and NH3-TPD. Mesopores were generated by introducing appropriate amounts of OSA. In addition, the catalytic performance of the hierarchical ZSM-5s were investigated for the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose. The increase in the mesoporosity leads to a reduced amount of coke. However, the highest yield of aromatics was obtained for the mesoporous sample with the greatest microporosity. Thus, the right balance between meso- and microporosity is critical for achieving high aromatic yields. In addition, the distribution of aromatic products is directly related to the microporosity.
Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose in a Microreactor System Using Hierarchical Zsm-5 Zeolites Treated with Various Alkalis

Abstract:Hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by desilication using NaOH, Na2CO3 and TPAOH with different concentrations under the same treatment conditions. Their structures and acidities were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N-2 adsorption and desorption (N-2-BET) and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). The catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose to produce aromatics over the hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts prepared using different alkali treatments was investigated. The alkali treatment by Na2CO3 (0.4 similar to 0.8 M) was much milder than treatment by NaOH, which allowed the desilication process to be highly controllable, resulting in an increase of both the amount and strength of the strong acid sites, and the formation of hierarchical structures combining micro- and mesoporosity. The organic hydroxide TPAOH did not change the pore structure of ZSM-5, but it greatly increased the relative crystallinity. The CFP of cellulose with HZSM-5 produced 35.5% liquid aromatic hydrocarbons and 32.7% coke. The yield of aromatics increased after Na2CO3 treatment but decreased after NaOH treatment. In addition, the yield of coke showed the opposite trend. The highest aromatic yield (38.2%) and lowest coke yield were obtained in the CFP of cellulose with the desilicated zeolite treated with 0.6 M Na2CO3. The increased acidity in hierarchical ZSM-5 treated with Na2CO3 increased the selectivity of highly valuable aromatics, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, and decreased the selectivity of large aromatics. TPAOH-treated HZSM-5 showed a slightly increased yield of aromatics due to the repair effect of TPAOH, but this treatment did not form a mesoporous structure.

Abstract:Hierarchical HZSM-5 were obtained by alkali treatment of commercial HZSM-5 zeolites (SiO2/Al2O3 radios of 25,38 and 50)using NaOH solutions of different concentrations (0.2—1.0mol/L)and exchanged with NH4Cl. The catalytic performance of the obtained hierarchical HZSM-5 in fast catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose was studied. The catalysts were characterized by N2-BET,XRD,TEM and NH3-TPD. The XRD patterns showed that the desilicated ZSM-5 structure was still maintained. The results of N2-BET and TEM image indicated that the mesopores were created after alkali treatment indicating the formation of hierarchical structure. The NH3-TPD results showed that the acidity increased first and then decreased as the alkali concentration increased. The Py-GCMS was used to test the catalytic activity of fast pyrolysis of cellulose. The yields of aromatic over Z25,Z38,and Z50 were 33.5％,35.6％ and 32.2％,respectively,and increased to 37.1％,38.5％ and 34.0％ after treated with 0.4mol/L NaOH solution. The coke yield also decreased to 29.1％,25.8％ and 29.8％ respectively after alkali treatment. The results indicated that controlled desilication of zeolite could increase the conversion of cellulose to aromatic hydrocarbons and inhibited the formation of coke.

Abstract:The synthesis of highly selective catalysts for the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass into valuable aromatics remains a challenge. This report describes the synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 catalysts by the NaOH desilication of conventional HZSM-5 for the CFP of rice straw to aromatics in a Tandem mu-reactor system coupled directly to a GC/MS equipped with FID and TCD. Catalysts were treated with a mild HCl wash and metal loading to increase the catalytic activity and reduce the deactivation. The effects of acidity, mesoporosity and incorporation of metals on the production of aromatics were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption and desorption (N-2-BET) and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 (NH3-TPD). The highest total acidity, especially the strong acidity, of the hierarchical ZSM-5 treated by 0.2 and 0.4 NaOH followed by HCl washing (AHZ-0.2 and AHZ-0.4) gave the highest yields of aromatics. Suitable mesopores introduced by alkali treatment enhanced mass transfer of reactants, increasing the yield of aromatics. Finally, the loading of a suitable amount of Ni and Cu produced more aromatics than standard HZSM-5 due to the improved decarboxylation/decarbonylation reactions leading to higher yields of olefins.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared by a hard template method (pre-crystallization and dry gel) using sucrose to obtain suitable mesopores for the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose to produce aromatics. As the sucrose added decrease, the mesopore surface area and mesopore volume of the zeolites decreased while the micropore surface area and micropore volume increased. The mesoporous structure introduced by sucrose promoted the CFP of cellulose to aromatics by increasing the mass transfer of molecules. The highest aromatic yield of 37.0% was obtained over the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites prepared by the pre-crystallization method with sucrose*12/SiO2 = 0.15.

Abstract:Hierarchical HZSM-5 with tunable acidity, zeolitic crystallinity, and porosity were prepared using different organosilanes and used for the production of aromatics from the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of rice straw. As the chain length of organosilanes changed, the composition of the products including aromatics and coke varied greatly. Additionally, the introduction of ammonium ions into organosilanes led to a lower yield of aromatics and a higher yield of coke. Transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3, N-2 adsorption-desorption (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), and X-ray diffraction were used to explore the influence of the morphological structure, acidity distribution, textural properties, and crystallinity on the CFP of rice straw. The results indicated that the crystallinity, textural properties, and total acidity had a great influence on the synthesis of aromatics.

Abstract:Modified H-type ZSM-5 (HZSM-5) catalysts were prepared using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as mesopore templates to enhance the activity for the catalytic fast pyrolysis of rice straw for aromatics compounds. A certain quantity of CTAB added into the HZSM-5 (HZ) forming hierarchical structure exhibited an improvement in the yield of the aromatics and a decrease in the yield of coke in comparison with that of bare HZ. In contrast, excessive CTAB addition resulted in a decrease in aromatic yield and an increase in coke yield. The effects of crystallinity, textural properties, morphological structure and acidity distribution on the production of aromatic compounds were measured by XRD, BET, TEM and NH3-TPD. The good crystallinity, small amount of mesopore formation and highest total acidity discovered in HZ-0.01 (the mole ratio of CTAB/SiO2 is 0.01) provided the highest aromatic compound yield of 26.8% and the lowest coke yield of 39.2%.

Abstract:The production of aromatic hydrocarbons from cellulose by zeolite-catalyzed fast pyrolysis involves a complex reaction network sensitive to the zeolite structure, crystallinity, elemental composition, porosity, and acidity. The interplay of these parameters under the reaction conditions represents a major roadblock that has hampered significant improvement in catalyst design for over a decade. Here, we studied commercial and laboratory-synthesized ZSM-5 zeolites and combined data from 10 complementary characterization techniques in an attempt to identify parameters common to high-performance catalysts. Crystallinity and framework aluminum site accessibility were found to be critical to achieve high aromatic yields. These findings enabled us to synthesize a ZSM-5 catalyst with enhanced activity, which offers the highest aromatic hydrocarbon yield reported to date.

Abstract:Catalytic re-forming of lignite pyrolysis volatiles to aromatics over zeolites is a promising method for value-added utilization of coal tar. However, to achieve a significant enhancement in both the yields of light aromatics and the catalytic lifetime by adjusting the structure of ZSM-5 zeolite and to understand its catalytic mechanism comprehensively are still great challenges. Herein, a self-assembled hierarchical core–shell with controlled mesopores and acidity as well as an ultrathin nonacidic protective shell was synthesized through a mild hydrothermal method of alkaline treatment with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide or tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH or TEAOH). Both the number and pore size distribution of mesopores can be regulated by adjusting the hydrothermal treatment time. These generated mesopores not only facilitate the mass transfer of reactants and products but also improve the utilization efficiency of the acid site. In addition, the newly fabricated nonacidic shell, which coats on the surface of ZSM-5 as a chain mail, plays a critical role in suppressing the coke formation by passivation of the acid sites on the external surface. In this work, the pore properties and acid distribution of ZSM-5 zeolite can be regulated synchronously through a desilication–recrystallization process. In addition, enhanced yields of light aromatics and catalytic lifetime were obtained simultaneously. [Influence of ZSM-5(38)/Al-MCM-41 Composite Molecular Sieve Catalysts on Pyrolysis of Cellulose].

Abstract:Pyrolysis of cellulose with different catalysts has been conducted in a fixed-bed reactor. Micro-mesoporous composite molecular sieves of ZSM-5(38)/A1-MCM-41 with different Si/A1 ratios were prepared under hydrothermal conditions. With powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), the catalyst samples were characterized. GC-MS was used to analyze the bio-oil composition. The effects of catalysts on the pyrolysis product yields were investigated and the results were compared with the results of experiments performed without catalyst under the same pyrolitic conditions. The presence of the catalysts decreased the liquid yield, while increased the moisture content. The major improvement in the quality of bio-oil with the use of catalysts was the increase of DL-2,3-Butanediol. ZSM-5(38)/A1-MCM-41(20) favored the formation of phenol and 2-methoxy-phenol. In addition, these catalysts were all benefit for the generation of small molecular compounds. Also, it was found that ZSM-5(38) was better for the production of C4-C5 compounds. And micro-mesoporous composite molecular sieves mainly promoted the production of C6-C8 compounds.

Abstract:<p>Light aromatics could be produced by catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of lignite over HZSM-5 with shape selectivity and accessible active sites. However, the catalytic reactivity in the center crystal has not been fully exploited. In this work, the different hollow hierarchical porosity-tunable ZSM-5 were synthesized using polyethylene glycol as a soft template by a steam-assisted crystallization process. Compared with commercial HZSM-5, the synthesized HZSM-5 exhibited higher selectivity for alkylbenzene (toluene and m/p-xylene) with the yield of 9.91 mg/g (7.31 mg/g over commercial HZSM-5). The hollow HZSM-5 with pore-size fine-tuning were favorable to control the tiny different intermediates for shape-selective of benzene and alkylbenzene in CFP. In addition, the unmodified synthetic hollow catalysts also kept highly stability after seven cycle experiments due to the enhancement of molecules diffusion in crystal center, especially the alkylbenzene yield was sustained at approximately 7.38 mg/g during cycle experiments. The work provides a great prospect to promote the formation of alkyl aromatics in CFP.</p>

Abstract:Cellulose is one of the main components of terrestrial biomass. In this study, a zeolite catalyst (ZSM-5) was used to catalyze the pyrolysis of cellulose. The components produced during pyrolysis were tested by Py-GC/MS, and the pyrolysis mechanism was analyzed by density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that furans and sugars were the primary pyrolysis products. After catalytic pyrolysis, the furfural content was significantly lower than that of non-catalytic pyrolysis. However, the yield of aromatic hydrocarbons increased significantly, especially benzene, which increased from almost zero to 13.04%. DFT further explored the specific reaction pathway of catalytic pyrolysis. It was found that under the catalysis of ZSM-5, the catalyst directly participated in most cellulose pyrolysis reactions. Also, the electrophilicity of acid sites in the reaction system played an important role. Therefore, the catalysis of the molecular sieve can significantly reduce the energy barrier of each path. In generating aromatic hydrocarbons, the decarbonylation reaction and dehydration reaction of furfural can be completely catalyzed, thereby increasing the reaction rate of generating aromatic hydrocarbons. Some deoxygenation steps occurred during the reaction, which made the catalytic pyrolysis reaction easier to develop, and improved the bio-oil quality.

Abstract:Biomass presents significant potential as an alternative template agent for assisting zeolites in developing new pore structure during recrystallization to enhance their catalytic performance. In this study, a new hierarchical HZSM-5 was synthesized through the in-situ reassembly of alkali-treated HZSM-5 with chitosan as an assisting agent. The impact of chitosan dosage on the catalytic performance of the hierarchical HZSM-5, as well as the influences of temperature, catalyst dosage, and corn stover (CS) to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) mass ratio on the content and selectivity of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) during the catalytic co-pyrolysis process, were thoroughly investigated. The results indicated that chitosan exhibited great potential as a template in the reassembly of hierarchical HZSM-5 during NaOH treatment, promoting the formation of weak acid sites and micro-mesoporous structures. Compared to the parent HZSM-5, the chitosan-assistant reassembled hierarchical HZSM-5 significantly enhanced the production of MAHs and inhibited the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The highest carbon yield of MAHs reached 36.9 % at 550 °C with a chitosan dosage of 15 %. Furthermore, the chitosan-modified HZSM-5 notably enhanced the synergistic production of MAHs by 38.2 %, while preventing the formation of PAHs and coke. This study contributes insights into the sustainable synthesis of hierarchical HZSM-5 for improved production of high-value products in the co-pyrolysis of biomass and waste plastics.

Abstract:ZSM-5 with hierarchical pore structure was synthesized by a simple two-step hydrothermal crystallization from silica fume without using any organic ammonium templates. The synthesized ZSM-5 were oval shaped particles with a particle size about 2.0 μm and weak acid-dominated with proper Brønsted (B) and Lewis (L) acid sites. The ZSM-5 was used for catalytic co-cracking of n-octane and guaiacol, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and alkali lignin (AL) to enhance the production of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene(BTEX). The most significant synergistic effect occurred at n-octane/guaiacol at 1:1 and LDPE/AL at 1:3, under the condition, the achieved BTEX selectivity were 24% and 33%(mass) higher than the calculated values (weighted average). The highest BTEX selectivity reached 88.5%, which was 3.7% and 54.2% higher than those from individual cracking LDPE and AL. The synthesized ZSM-5 exhibited superior catalytic performance compared to the commercial ZSM-5, indicating potential application prospect.

Abstract:The development of an effective strategy for synthesizing two-dimensional MFI zeolites has attracted more and more attention. By varying the molar ratio of C18-6-6Br2/TEA from 2.5/0 to 2.5/40, the morphologies and textural properties of the resultant HZ5-2.5/x catalysts were finely modulated. By increasing x from 5 to 40, the morphology of the HZ5-2.5/x changed from unilamellar assembly with narrow a–c plane to intertwined nanosheets with wide a–c plane and multilamellar nanosheets with house-of-cards morphology. The thickness of these nanosheets was almost 8–10 nm. In addition, selectivity to light olefins reached 70.7% for the HZ5-2.5/10 catalyst, which was 6.6% higher than that for CZSM-5 (64.1%). Furthermore, the MFI zeolite nanosheets exhibited better anticoking stability within the 60 h reaction time compared to conventional ZSM-5 zeolite, which could be attributed to the short diffusion path and hierarchical porosity. This work will provide valuable insights into the rational design of novel zeolite catalysts for the efficient cracking of hydrocarbons.

Abstract:ZSM-5 is an important class of acid catalyst for producing bio-oil rich in petrochemicals; however, continuous efforts are required to improve the conversion efficiency of the biomass-derived oxygenates with large molecular sizes. The mesoporous ZSM-5 (N-ZSM-5) was prepared in a post-treatment method with nanocellulose as a green template in this study to induce additional surface and porous features. The post-treatment promoted the mesoporous properties in N-ZSM-5, which effectively converted lignocellulosic biomass to deoxygenated aromatic products in catalytic pyrolysis. Moreover, compared to the conventional or alkali-treated mesoporous ZSM-5, higher selectivity of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) was attained in catalytic pyrolysis of lignin while mitigating the coke accumulation. The product distribution was evaluated using the response surface methodology with reaction temperature (°C) and catalyst loading (g/g feedstock). The compositions of upgraded volatile products measured MAHs (~46.55 area%) and monophenols (~98.09 area%) depending on the process conditions.

Abstract:Cellulolytic enzyme lignin could be utilized to produce aromatic-rich bio-oil in the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) process, in which strong-acidic ZSM-5 is often used as the catalyst. The introduction of mesopores into conventional ZSM-5 catalysts can improve the diffusion of heavy components and thus enable the modulation of pyrolysis products. To investigate the effect of mesoporous structure parameters on the diffusion of heavy phenols and the regulation of pyrolysis products by different types of pore structures, three different mesoporous ZSM-5 were prepared (core-shell, hierarchical, composites), with textural properties being compared in detail. The structural parameters were adopted to analyze the relationship between mesopores distribution and catalytic performance, revealing the significant effect of equivalent mesopore size. Among the prepared catalysts, a micro-mesostructured composite zeolite (ZMA) with internal hierarchical pores and ununiform mesolayer shell had a suitable mesostructure, of which the interconnected meso-channels improved the accessibility of inner acidic sites. Also, it was optimum to balance aromatic yield (above 7.5 wt%) and the product distribution (MAHs/PAHs approaching 6), revealing that its moderate equivalent pore size maintained a certain shape-selectivity to suppress PAHs formation. It was further shown that the applicable catalyst to lignin ratio (C/L) ranges differed with various mesostructures, as ZMA and hierarchical samples were suitable for higher and lower ratios, respectively.
