Abstract:With the rapid development of electronic devices and digital communication, the problem of overheating emerges due to high integration, high power and high frequency. At present, it is a hot spot to construct three-dimensional thermal conductive carbon networks for heat dissipation of electronic devices. In this paper, the Epoxy/carbon fibers/carbon nanotubes (Epoxy/CFs/CNTs) composite with high thermal conductivity was manufactured by vacuum-assisted filtration and hot press method. The effects of the carbon nanotubes content on the thermal conductivity of composites were investigated. The mutual lapped CNTs and CFs formed a thermal conductive skeleton, which obviously improves the thermal performance of the composites. The results reveal that the in-plane thermal conductivity of the Epoxy/CFs/CNTs-50c composite (17.60 vol% CFs and 8.42 vol% CNTs) reaches 20.55 W/mK, about 108 times of the thermal conductivity of the Epoxy (0.19 W/mK). In addition, Epoxy/CFs/CNTs-50c has favorable thermal management properties and achieved excellent results in LED tests. The Epoxy/CFs/CNTs composites have excellent thermal conductivity and have enormous potential as advanced thermal management materials.
A Numerical Study on the Thermal Conductivity of 3D Woven C/C Composites at High Temperature

Abstract:Experimental data for Carbon/Carbon (C/C) constituent materials are combined with a three dimensional steady state heat transfer finite element analysis to demonstrate the average in-plane and out-of-plane thermal conductivities (TCs) of C/C composites. The finite element analysis is carried out at two distinct length scales: (a) a micro scale comparable with the diameter of carbon fibres and (b) a meso scale comparable with the carbon fibre yarns. Micro-scale model calculate the TCs at the fibre yarn scale in the three orthogonal directions (x, y and z). The output results from the micro-scale model are then incorporated in the meso-scale model to obtain the global TCs of the 3D C/C composite. The simulation results are quite consistent with the theoretical and experimental counterparts reported in references. Based on the numerical approach, TCs of the 3D C/C composite are calculated from 300 to 2500 K. Particular attention is given in elucidating the variations of the TCs with temperature. The multi-scale models provide an efficient approach to predict the TCs of 3D textile materials, which is helpful for the thermodynamic property analysis and structure design of the C/C composites.

Abstract:Thermal conductivity behaviors are one of the most important evaluations of C/SiC composites in the field of thermal protective structures. Represent volume element (RVE) models of microscale, void/matrix, and mesoscale proposed in this work are used to investigate the thermal conductivity behaviors of the C/SiC composites with different preform architectures. The thermal conductivities of 2.5D woven composites (2.5D), 3D woven orthogonal composites (3D), 3D five-directional woven composites (3DFD) and the combination of three structures fabricating by the flexible oriented woven process (FOWP) are comparatively discussed. The periodic temperature boundary conditions are applied to the RVE models to predict the thermal conductivities (TCs). The proposed analytical methods are validated by the values from the experiment and the literature. In addition, the effect of porosity and structure combination sequences on TCs is also taken into consideration. The results show that the 3D woven orthogonal composites have the lowest TCs and the structure combination sequences have little effect on TCs of C/SiC composites. The present work can potentially help to improve the design process and provide a significant reference to select the appropriate preform architectures.

Abstract:Two-dimensional images of C/C 3D orthogonal woven composite were captured by X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT). The μCT data reveal comprehensive meso-geometrical information about the carbon fiber tows, carbon matrix, and void defects etc. The fibers tows are characterized consisting of the cancroids of a tow, the area and aspect ratio of its cross-section. A statistical analysis of the volume fraction and positioning of the void defects in the 3D orthogonal woven architecture is performed based on 2-D micro tomography images. The tabulated statistics are sufficient to generate the virtual specimen, which shares the same statistical characteristics of the C/C composite and the void defects are included. Three-point bending experiment and simulation are carried out and the results show that the finite element model including the void defects gives more accurate results. The finite element model will give some highlights to the numerical simulation approach of the C/C textile composite under thermal, mechanical and oxygen coupled service environment. And the numerical techniques for modelling such kind materials with woven architecture and void defects are recommended.

Abstract:In-plane and out-of-plane coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) are important parameters for thermodynamic analysis of Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composite. In this study, CTEs of a high performance 3D orthogonal woven C/C composite at high temperature are studied by multi-scale mechanical modeling using the finite element method. Two representative volume element (RVE) models at different length scales are used to evaluate the CTEs of the C/C material. Micro-scale model predicts the CTEs at the fibre tow scale in the three orthogonal directions (x, y and z). The output results from the micro-scale model are then incorporated in the meso-scale model to obtain the in-plane and out-of-plane CTEs of the 3D C/C composite. The modeling results have good agreement with the experimental results reported in references. Based on the numerical approach, global CTEs of the 3D C/C composite are calculated from 300 to 2500 K, and their temperature dependences are discussed. The current applied multi-scale models provide an efficient approach to predict the CTEs of 3D textile materials, which will give some highlights for thermodynamic analysis and structures design of the C/C composite. Abstract:Coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) are an essential design criterion of the three-dimensional carbon fiber reinforced SiC matrix composites (3D C/SiC). Representative volume element (RVE) models of microscale, void/matrix, and mesoscale developed in this work were used to investigate the CTEs of these composites. A coupled temp-displacement steady-state analysis step was created for assessing the thermal expansions behaviors of the composites by applying periodic displacement and temperature boundary conditions. Three RVE models of cuboid, hexagonal and fiber random distribution were respectively established to comparatively study the influence of fiber package pattern on the CTEs at microscale. Similarly, the effects of different void size, locations, and shapes on the CTEs of the matrix are comparatively analyzed by the void/matrix models. The prediction results at mesoscale corresponded closely to the experimental results. The effect of the porosities on the CTEs was studied by the void/matrix RVE models. The voids were effective in lowering the CTE of the 3D C/SiC composites. Furthermore, the effect of fiber volume fractions on the CTE were also taken into consideration. Equal in-plane and out-of-plane CTEs were realized by selecting appropriate fiber volume fractions for the different directions. The multiscale models developed in this work can be used to predict the thermal expansion behaviors of other complex structure composites.

Abstract:A quantitative analysis method for the transverse thermal conductivity (TC) of carbon fiber is developed, which consists of three steps including TC and morphology characterization of unidirectional composite laminate, fiber contour extraction, and finite element inverse analysis. Two different pitch-based carbon fibers with folded-radial and onion-skin microstructure are characterized, and the influences of fiber volume fraction and microstructure on the heat conduction of their composites are investigated. The equivalent transverse TCs of TC-HC-800 and PCF-1 carbon fibers are measured to be 9.27 and 2.87 W m-1 K-1, respectively. The through-thickness TC of unidirectional composite exhibits rapid growth with the increase in fiber volume fraction. The finite element analysis reveals that more continuous heat conduction paths are formed with the increase in fiber volume fraction. Benefited from the bigger graphitization degree, larger cross-sectional area, and bigger aspect ratio, TC-HC-800 unidirectional composite shows higher through-thickness TC than PCF-1 composite at the same fiber volume fraction.

Abstract:Journal of Industrial Textiles, Volume 54, Issue , January-December 2024. To expand the application of C/C composites in the field of 5G satellite, this paper explores the influence of different preform structures on the mechanical properties, EMI shielding properties, and thermal conductivity of C/C composites. Three common 3D fabric preform structures with different weaving parameters are designed. The pore evolution process of different samples was analyzed by image recognition processing method and pore partition method. The findings indicate that the 3D Fine weave pierced structure leads to higher graphitization degree. 3D orthogonal woven structure results in a higher compression strength of up to 240 MPa. Furthermore, the molding method of 3D orthogonal woven structure exhibits superior EMI SE and thermal conductivity. The EMI shielding mode of C/C composites is the coexistence of absorption and reflection. And excellent texture and a high fiber volume fraction are beneficial to improve thermal conductivity. In conclusion, 3D orthogonal woven structure is more suitable for producing C/C composites with high strength, superior EMI shielding, and enhanced thermal conductivity compared to 3D Fine weave pierced structure. This study reveals a new control method of high-performance materials for 5G satellites.

Abstract:Three-dimensional woven structures have garnered significant interest due to their enhanced mechanical properties and structural integrity. This study delves into a detailed analysis of progressive damage failure in multi-structured, flexible-oriented three-dimensional woven composites (FO3DWC), with a specific focus on the effects of voids. Employing the flexible-oriented three-dimensional woven process (FO3DWP), four distinct structures were fabricated and subjected to uniaxial tensile tests. The study integrates an progressive damage failure model coupled with a random element selection method to investigate the effects of void defects on mechanical properties. The results show that significant variations occur in the strength of the L45135 structure due to the void defects, with a maximum decrease of up to 4.37% when the porosity is 5%. This research provides a quantitative understanding of how voids impact the mechanical performance of FO3DWC, offering valuable guidance for material design and application in various engineering fields.

Abstract:In order to comprehensively understand the thermal conductive behaviors CFRCs with carbon nanotubes, a novel multiscale semi-analytical model is presented in this work to study the effective thermal conductivities and localized responses. Firstly, an interlayer model is established at the first level including aligned CNTs and embedded polymer matrix. At the second level of the hierarchical structure, a three-phase model is established to simulate representative unit cells of two distinct geometries for fuzzy -fiber reinforced composites (FFRCs). The locally exact homogenization theory (LEHT) is further extended to predict the effective thermal conductivities and localized fields at each level. After guaranteeing the convergence of the proposed approach, the predicted results of fuzzy -fiber reinforced nanocomposites are verified against the available simulations in the literature and finite element method (FEM). The results demonstrate that the longitudinal thermal conductivity is least affected by the CNT coating, while the transverse thermal conductivity is significantly enhanced for the CFRCs. The thermal conductive performance of FFRCs is then demonstrated by varying the CNTs' geometric and thermal parameters. More importantly, from a top-down procedure, the localized heat -flux/ temperature distributions are recovered using the semi-analytical multiscale model, to predict the possible crack initiations starting within the microstructures.

Abstract:A homogenisation scheme is developed to evaluate the thermo-elastic properties of three-dimensional orthogonal woven composites. The coupling effects between thermal and mechanical behaviour in different directions are taken into account. In comparison to some other analytical models, the results obtained with the present scheme are shown to be in better agreement with FEM predictions and experimental data. In addition, effects of cross-sectional geometry of yarns on the thermo-elastic properties of the composites are also analysed.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to manufacture gradient three-dimensional (3D) orthogonal preforms by controlling fiber tension in the flexible oriented 3D woven process (FO3DWP). The method was then adopted to fabricate three groups of gradient and uniform 3D woven preforms in order to conduct fiber volume fraction analysis. The precursors were simultaneously prepared into carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by means of the precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process. The experimental results demonstrated that the outer interlayer distance of the gradient C/C composite was smaller than the inner interlayer distance, leading to the increase of the pore distribution diameter in gradient C/C composites. Thermal conductivity test and ablation properties test were conducted experimentally via oxyacetylene flame and transient hot-wire test, respectively. The out-of-plane thermal and ablation rate of the gradient composites were found to be lower than the ones of uniform composites. Furthermore, both the ablation resistance and the thermal conductivity increased with increasing fiber volume fraction. During the ablation test, carbon fibers in the x- and y-yarn area were shown to be able to protect the matrix and interface from further ablation, compared with the z-yarn area. Those results, successfully demonstrating the thermophysical property improvement, proved great potential of the gradient 3D woven C/C composites in aerospace applications.

Abstract:This paper successfully constructed a high through-thickness thermal conductivity carbon fiber composite with three-dimensional orthogonal woven fabric (3DOWF) by taking advantage of the high conductivity of carbon fiber. The effect of structural parameters and Z-direction bundling yarn (Z-yarn) on thermal conductivity (TC) was investigated, and thermal transport mechanism was analyzed. The results show that the TC in the through-thickness direction of 3DOWFs increase dramatically after adding Z-yarn structure, reaching up to 4.12 W/m/K, which is 116% higher than the laminated sample. A plane heat source was established to record the temperature-time curves of the composites, and results show that the composites with higher TC have faster equilibrium time and higher equilibrium temperature. Infrared thermography demonstrates the difference of thermal response process between 3DOWF and laminated material. To sum up, a large amount of heat energy can be transferred rapidly from hot surface to cold one through these Z-yarn paths in the thermal conductive network of 3DOWF, which has potential application in composite with high thermal conductivity.

Abstract:The in-plane coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) are important parameters of woven ceramic matrix composite (CMC) in the processes of design, manufacture and utilization. In this paper, five-harness satin woven C/C composites with different volume fractions of matrix fabricated by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) method are used for microstructure observation and in-plane CTEs tests. The morphological features and evolution process of defects are studied via analysis of scanning electron microscope (SEM) figures. The improved semi-analytical method and the improved finite element method (FEM) on prediction of the equivalent in-plane CTE of woven CMC considering the effects of defects are established. The improved methods are validated by the results of experiments. Therein the improved semi-analytical method is more efficient in calculation. The improved FEM needs to establish complicated finite element models, but it can reveal the structural details and the deformation mechanism after heating.

Abstract:The effective thermal conductivity enhancement of carbon fiber composites is investigated in this contribution using a three-dimensional numerical method. First a more realistic three-dimensional distribution of fibers dispersed in a matrix phase is reproduced by a developed random generation-growth method to eliminate the overrated inter-fiber contacts by the two-dimensional simulations. The energy transport governing equations are then solved through the three-dimensional structures using a high-efficiency lattice Boltzmann scheme. The resultant predictions agree well with the available experimental data. Compared with the existing theoretical models, the present method does not depend upon empirical parameters which have to be determined case by case, so that it is useful for design and optimization for new materials, beyond prediction and analysis just for existing composites.

Abstract:A three-dimensional helix geometry unit cell is established to simulate the complex spatial configuration of 3D braided composites. Initially, different types of yarn factors, such as yarn path, cross-sectional shape, properties, and braid direction, are explained. Then, the multiphase finite element method is used to develop a new theoretical calculation procedure based on the unit cell for predicting the impacts of environmental temperature on the thermophysical properties of 3D four-direction carbon/epoxy braided composites. The changing rule and distribution characteristics of the thermophysical properties for 3D four-direction carbon/epoxy braided composites are obtained at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 200 °C. The influences of environmental temperature on the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and the coefficients of thermal conduction (CTC) are evaluated, by which some important conclusions are drawn. A comparison is conducted between theoretical and experimental results, revealing that variations in temperature exert a notable influence on the thermophysical characteristics of 3D four-directional carbon/epoxy braided composites. The theoretical calculation procedure is an effective tool for the mechanical property analysis of composite materials with complex geometries.

Abstract:For high performance 3D orthogonal textile Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composites, a key issue is the manufacturing defects, such as micro-cracks and voids. Defects can be substantial perturbations of the ideal architecture of the materials which trigger the failure mechanisms and compromise strength. This study presents comprehensive investigations, including experimental mechanical tests, micron-resolution computed tomography (μCT) detection and finite element modeling of the defects in the C/C composite. Virtual C/C specimens with void defects were constructed based on μCT data and a new progressive damage model for the composite was proposed. According to the numerical approach, effects of voids on mechanical performance of the C/C composite were investigated. Failure predictions of the C/C virtual specimens under different void fraction and location were presented. Numerical simulation results showed that voids in fiber yarns had the greatest influences on performance of the C/C composite, especially on tensile strength.
Characteristics of interfaces in 3D fine weave carbon/carbon composites

Abstract:Statistical analysis of in-situ fiber bundle failure was carried out for 3D C/C composites processed by different technologies. An in-situ interfacial strength testing instrument was used to determine the fiber/matrix bond properties of C/C composites. A micromechanical model for the study of stress and strain fields along fiber/matrix interfaces was introduced and a method for description of the interface properties through debonding force and mechanical properties of fibers, matrices and composites was provided. The analytic results provide an optimal design for C/C composites. High temperature processing decreases the fiber bundle strength up to about 20%. A comparison of different interfaces reveals that fiber bundles in the z-direction have the strongest bounding and the best interface structure.

Abstract:This paper describes a new numerical approach for modeling the microscopic and macroscopic thermal behaviors of cement composites filled with multiple natural fibers coated with thin homogeneous interphase layers. The coated fibers are assumed to have regular or non-regular distributions in the cementitious matrix. In the present method, special n-sided interphase/fiber elements are developed with special two-phase fundamental solution kernels analytically satisfying the heat transfer equations in the fiber and interphase constituents and the continuum conditions between them to entirely discretize each coated fiber, in despite of the thickness of interphase layer. As a result, the number of nodes and computing costs can be significantly reduced. For such elements, all integrals involved are evaluated along the element boundary such that any polygonal elements with n sides can be constructed. Simultaneously, it's allowed for accurate calculation of the thermal fields anywhere within material phases including the matrix, fibers and interphases. Numerical experiments are conducted to study the interaction of multiple coated fibers and evaluate the effective thermal conductivities of the composites. Comparisons with numerical benchmark results from the conventional finite element method are made to demonstrate the property of the presented special n-sided interphase/fiber elements.

Abstract:The anisotropic micro-structure of fiber will lead to the macroscopic anisotropic properties of fiber reinforced composites in both heat transfer and mechanical strength. However, few experimental studies have be made on the anisotropic heat transfer properties of fiber reinforced composites. In this study, the anisotropic thermal conductivities of two-dimensional (2D) plain woven and twill woven carbon-fiber/epoxy composites are measured at different temperature with the one-dimensional (1D) steady-state method, transient plane source (TPS) method and transient hot wire method, respectively. The out-of-plane thermal conductivity and in-plane thermal conductivity at the temperature ranging from -45 ℃ to 160 ℃ are obtained and comparisons are made among the three methods. The results show that all the three methods can be used to measure the anisotropic thermal conductivity of fiber/epoxy woven composites. Both the out-of-plane thermal conductivity and in-plane thermal conductivity of carbon-fiber/epoxy woven composites increase with temperature, and the in-plane thermal conductivity is approximately four times as high as the out-of-plane thermal conductivity for the plain woven composites. Compared with the results of 1D steady-state method, the max deviations of TPS method and hot wire method are 18.1% and 17.1%, respectively. The sources of error that leading to the deviations are also discussed.
