Abstract:Abstract Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) widely occurs in concrete, resulting in durability problem and premature loss in serviceability of infrastructures all over the world. Understanding of the properties of ASR products, especially at micro scale level, helps mitigation of deterioration in concrete structures. In this study, the nano-scale structure and mechanical properties of the ASR products under dry and saturated conditions are investigated. The scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer with X-ray (SEM-EDS) and atomic force microscope (AFM), as well as the nanoindentation are applied to the ASR products. The experimental observation indicates the effect of water on the micromorphology and nano-scale mechanical properties of ASR products. Water makes contribution to the transformation of ASR products from solid to viscous gels and the decrease in the Young’s modulus and hardness of ASR products. The testing results reveal the correlation between nano-scale structure and mechanical properties and improve the understanding of the micromechanical behavior of ASR products.

Abstract:A systematic investigation is being performed to understand the combined size, loading rate and thermal effects on the responses of nanostructures such as nanofilms and nanowires. This paper summarizes what has been found so far, and presents the recent molecular dynamics simulations of the mechanical behaviors of single crystal fcc nanowires and nanofilms under different temperatures and extremely high strain rates. Based on the model‐based simulation results, the mechanism of the nanostructural responses will be explored and future research tasks will be discussed.

Abstract:A composite coating containing nanosized ceramic powders was fabricated by a supersonic arc-spraying procedure using corresponding cored wires.The microstructure and high temperature erosion property of the coating were studied by characterizations with optical microscope,microhardness,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy,with special attentions paid to the effect of the subsequent annealing treatment.The results show that the skin and the cored powders melted and fused to form homogeneous solid solutions during the arc-spraying procedure using the cored wires.The achieved coating shows homogeneous hardness.The subsequent annealing of the coating reduced defects and residual stress,decomposed the metastable phases and at the same time improved the crystallinity of corresponding phases in the coating,which in turn improved its hardness.The high-temperature erosion resistance of the coatings after the subsequent annealing improved significantly.

Abstract:In this computational study, the nanoscale mechanical properties of C-S-H composite materials under different temperatures are evaluated with molecular dynamics (MD). The effects of different proportions of crystals, levels of porosity, and degrees of temperature on the nanoscale mechanical properties of the C-S-H composites are investigated. The initial computational models are built up based on tobermorite and jennite crystals, and the geometries of the models are then optimized before performing MD simulations at 25 degrees C, 80 degrees C, and 200-1500 degrees C with the interval of 100 degrees C, respectively. The resulting mechanical properties of the composites are evaluated under different conditions. The self-consistent (SC), Mori-Tanaka (MT), and Voigt methods are used to understand the effects of crystal proportions and porosities on the mechanical properties of the C-S-H composites at three representative temperatures. It is found that both the bulk and shear moduli of the C-S-H composites are decreased with the increasing temperature. Regarding the influence of porosity, a specific proportional relationship is obtained based on the results with the SC, MT, and Voigt methods. The reported findings provide a better insight into the thermomechanical response of the C-S-H composites. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
